Executive Principal’s Report - Richard Usher

Success doesn’t just happen. At Cav Rd we look to learning growth for every student year on year. As a bare minimum, expectant of one year’s growth for one year’s instruction, our school strives to value add looking for 1% improvement each year. It may not sound much, but incrementally over a young person’s schooling it adds up, where it can make the difference between a D and a C, a C and a B and a B to an A, ticking off that VET competency or just that little bit better ATAR score. In all those measures we continue to see growth and improvement towards realizing their potential.
The challenge is to maintain that growth when achieving such high numbers. Term 1 student results show the average pass rates across the school in both junior and senior at or near to 98% in every key learning area and many subjects report pass rates of 99% and 100 % with consistent patterns of about 80% or more, of achieving A’s and B’s across all subjects in their programs of study.
Celebrate the gains and not the wins. Every student is different. There is no base line except for the one that identifies their starting point and teaching and learning that effectively results in learning growth translating into next incremental shift to achievement. The gift in all of this is the personal satisfaction, esteem and motivation that young people acquire, putting effort and mind to stretching to meet and in many cases surpass their achievement aspirations.
Feedback is a gift, with a great number of parents and carers attending the first face to face parent teacher interviews for the year. This is a two-way process. What is great to see are the genuine learning partnerships that have been created and forged and that teachers value these opportunities to know their learners just that much better, share student progress to date and exchange information that can be used that ultimately translates into that 1 per cent and optimal achievement.

Extra-Curricular Activities at Cav Rd
At Cavendish Road State High School, we believe that a well-rounded education extends beyond the classroom. Extra-curricular activities provide students with opportunities to develop essential life skills, build lasting friendships, and discover new passions. Whether it's sport, music, drama, debating, leadership programs, or community service, these activities enrich the school experience and students in many ways.
Involvement in extra-curricular activities fosters resilience, responsibility, and time management and supports personal growth and development. Students learn how to balance commitments, work towards goals, and develop confidence in their abilities. Programs like the Duke of Edinburgh, Arts on the Green, and leadership roles such as international ambassador help shape well-rounded individuals who are better prepared for future challenges.
Participation in clubs and competitions has been linked to improved academic performance. Engaging in structured programs encourages discipline and focus, often translating to better study habits and classroom engagement. Students at Cavendish Road SHS have access to clubs such as the Academy of Ideas, Drama and Dance clubs, as well as competitions like ICAS, all of which support their academic growth.
Joining a club or team fosters connections with like-minded peers and strengthens school spirit. These shared experiences create a sense of belonging, reducing stress and enhancing overall well-being. With clubs such as PRIDE (LGBTQAI+), Drama Club, and Guitar Club, as well as large-scale events like Arts on the Green and the School Musical, there is something for everyone.
Employers and universities look for well-rounded individuals with experiences beyond academics. Leadership roles, teamwork, and community involvement demonstrate initiative and commitment, making students more competitive in job applications and tertiary admissions. Programs like the Griffith Business Program, Study tours, and the International Challenge Trip provide valuable experiences that set students apart.
We encourage all students to get involved, try something new, and make the most of the opportunities available. Whether it’s joining a sports academy, learning an instrument, or participating in the Reconciliation Week Parade, the benefits of extra-curricular participation extend far beyond the school gates.
For more information on the activities available at Cavendish Road State High School, please visit our school website or speak to one of our staff members.
Guidance Officer Week 2025 (28 April to 9 May) is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the valuable contribution Guidance Officers make to our school communities. Their role is diverse and deeply impactful, supporting students in all aspects of their development and wellbeing. This includes providing expert guidance and counselling in areas such as education, personal growth, social connections, career planning, mental health, and future pathways.
Here are five key points about the role and importance of Guidance Officers in Queensland state secondary schools:
Student Wellbeing and Mental Health Support | Guidance Officers play a critical role in supporting students’ emotional, social, and psychological wellbeing through counselling, early intervention, and referral to external services when needed. |
Career and Pathway Planning | They assist students in making informed decisions about future education, training, and employment pathways, including subject selection, QTAC applications, and vocational options. |
Academic Support and Intervention | Guidance Officers help identify students experiencing academic difficulties and collaborate with teachers, parents, and support staff to implement targeted strategies and support plans. |
Crisis Response and Risk Assessment | They are trained to assess and manage risks related to student safety and protection, including self-harm, family issues, or exposure to trauma, often acting as the first point of contact in critical situations. |
Collaboration and Case Management | Guidance Officers work closely with school leadership, teachers, families, and external agencies to support students through case management and contribute to a safe, inclusive, and supportive school environment. |
If you wish to see a Guidance Officer at Cav Rd, please reach out to them at the email address below.

Introducing Ms Felicity Symko – Deputy Principal Year 11 and 12

Hello Cav Rd community,
I’m excited to introduce myself as the new Deputy Principal for Years 11 and 12. It’s a privilege to join a school with such a strong reputation for academic excellence, student leadership, and a genuine sense of community.
I’m passionate about supporting senior students to reach their full potential — not just in their academic journey, but also in their personal growth and readiness for life beyond school. My leadership philosophy is grounded in collaboration, clarity, and care. I believe that by building strong relationships, setting high expectations, and working together as a team, we can create an environment where every student feels known, valued, and empowered to thrive.
I’m really looking forward to getting to know the students, connecting with families, and working alongside the dedicated team here at Cavendish Road State High School. Please don’t hesitate to stop and say hello — I’m always happy for a chat.
Felicity Symko – Deputy Principal Year 11 & 12
Head of Student Services – Year 11 & 12

Mr Leonard Lai
It’s been a busy and meaningful term for our senior students, filled with opportunities to grow, connect, and reflect.
For our Year 11s, the Personal Development Program (PDP) has been a real journey. The Year 11 Camp at Maroon Outdoor Education Centre was a standout. Students challenged themselves physically and mentally, formed deeper friendships, and took real pride in pushing beyond their comfort zones. Whether it was hiking in the rain, sharing stories around the campfire, or stepping up as quiet leaders in their groups, resilience and teamwork were on full display. It’s safe to say the camp was the highlight of the year so far for many.
Back at school, students who weren’t on camp took part in a range of engaging Life Skills workshops—learning how to buy and finance a car, budget and maintain basic household items, pick up carpentry skills for around the home, and earn their Senior First Aid and CPR certificates. These sessions gave students real-world knowledge and sparked great conversations about the future.
Meanwhile, other students were out in the community completing Work Experience placements as part of PDP Week. From retail stores to worksites and local businesses, students explored different career pathways and returned with new skills, confidence, and in some cases, exciting offers for future work.
A huge thank you to our Industry Liaison Officer, Jodie Anderson, for the incredible work she put into organising these opportunities. Her dedication and attention to detail ensured that our students had a meaningful, well-supported experience—both on campus and out in the community.

A special moment this term was our Mother’s Day Breakfast, where we welcomed our Year 12 students and their mothers or female guardians to share a lovely morning together. It was a wonderful chance to pause and celebrate the incredible women who have helped shape and support our students. The atmosphere was warm and full of heartfelt moments.
Our Senior Leaders also proudly represented Cav at the Holland Park RSL ANZAC Day Dawn Service, showing great respect and commitment despite the wet and gloomy conditions. Their presence and involvement truly captured the spirit of community and remembrance.
As we continue through the term, I’m incredibly proud of how our senior students are showing up—for themselves, their futures, and each other. Thank you for your continued support in helping them thrive.

Guidance Corner
In the Guidance Space we get a lot of questions about technology use and how much is too much. In today’s digital age, it’s no surprise that phones and video games are a big part of our kids’ lives. It can often seem like teenagers are using technology and the internet for a large part of the day. It’s hard to know where the line falls between safe, rewarding use and overuse of technology (Reach out, 2025)

What is Technology overuse?
Technology overuse is when screen use becomes compulsive meaning your child feels unable to cut back, even when it interferes with sleep, school, or relationships. It often comes with mood swings, irritability when not playing, and neglect of other activities. For most young people technology is beneficial and when used correctly it can be a useful resource for study, connection and for exploring their interests, careers and goals. However, if not regulated then it can become a concern for parent/caregiver, teachers, and medical professionals (EDUCAR, 2024).
For some young people technology use is a distraction from the other more difficult situations in their lives, be that school, relationships, and/or conflict. The more they use it as a distraction the harder it is to deal with the external issues. The use of technology also triggers the brains reward systems, which makes young people want to use technology more, thus distract more and the cycle continues.
How Much is Too Much?
Experts generally recommend no more than 1–2 hours of recreational screen time per day for school-aged children (Reach Out, 2025). Technology use becomes a problem when it regularly disrupts sleep, homework, or social time—or when your child seems withdrawn, anxious, or obsessed with being online.
While there are many positives to technology such as: listening to music, using self-care apps and programs, completing schoolwork, and engaging in interests there are also a number of problematic issues that can arise if technology use starts to take over (All, S. 2018)
Warning Signs to Watch For:
- Drop in grades or school engagement
- Trouble sleeping or staying up late to play
- Skipping meals or social events to be online
- Only socialising online and find in person social interactions difficult.
- Strong emotional reactions when asked to unplug
- Loss of interest in non-digital hobbies – They find it hard to talk or think about much else.
Why It Matters
Excessive technology use can impact mental health, attention span, academic success, and relationships. It can also increase the risk of anxiety, depression, and poor self-esteem.
How Parents Can Help
- Set clear limits on screen time and stick to them.
- Create screen-free zones at meals and bedtime.
- Model healthy habits by limiting your own screen use.
- Encourage offline activities like sports, clubs, or family outings.
- Talk to your child about how they’re feeling and what they enjoy online—and listen.
- Seek professional help if your child’s screen use feels out of control or is affecting their well-being.
Balancing screen time isn’t easy, but with structure, support, and open communication, you can help your child build healthy digital habits that will serve them for life.

Year 11 Work Experience and Life Skills programs
Term 2, Week 2 was an opportunity for Year 11 students to experience their world through the Leadership Camp, Work Experience program or the Life Skills (How to be an Adult 101) program.
Over a hundred students completed five days of work experience this year. They had the opportunity to work in a wide variety of industry areas. Education Queensland promotes these opportunities as students gain a better understanding of how classroom learning is applied in the workplace, develop a better understanding of the work environment and what employers expect of their workers, explore possible career options including non-gender stereotyped occupations, grow in confidence, maturity and self-reliance, develop increased motivation to continue study and/or undertake further training.
The feedback shows that, even if the experience was not what they expected from the workplace or industry, they were more aware of opportunities and enjoyed learning in new environments.
Chan J completed his week at SAS Laboratories. He said, “I wanted to see what kind of work environment it would be, working with other people, even though it is not directly related to the branch of science I want to do which is Physics. I was given very precise responsibilities working with scientific machinery. I would definitely recommend work experience to others.”
Cavendish Road SHS would like to thank all of our employers for hosting our students.
60 students participated in the Life Skills program with ADAPT Education. The program included job preparation, constructing walls, changing car tyres, first aid and responsible service of alcohol qualifications. The feedback was very positive, learning critical skills and knowledge.
TAFE Applications – 2026
Applications for TAFE in 2026 will be opening soon. Any students interested in applying for TAFE are to see Mrs Anderson in K16 from Week 6 onwards. Students can collect a 2026 TAFE in Schools guide and a pre-application form from K16.
Traineeship/Apprenticeship Opportunities
Students are reminded to check their school emails regularly as there are many opportunities coming our way in various industries that our students are able to apply for.
Certificate II Tourism
Students have been working online. The practical sessions at school are a great opportunity to work in teams and have some fun.

ようこそ! Willkommen! Welcome!
Inaugural Visit by German Sister School KGS Bad Münder
In Week 9 last term, we had the privilege of hosting the inaugural visit from KGS Bad Münder, Cav’s new German Sister School. Fourteen students and two teachers were warmly welcomed by our Cav families and staff, with the Honorary German Consul, Dr Michael Rosemann, extending a special greeting before they immersed themselves in a week of Australian school life. Our German visitors felt incredibly welcomed and thoroughly enjoyed their experience. Students participated in daily classes alongside their host siblings, as well as engaging in specialised Maths and Art lessons generously facilitated by the respective faculties. The week also featured memorable excursions, including a bushwalk at Whites Hill Reserve and a unique visit to the Summer Land Camel Farm—giving our guests a true taste of Queensland life and culture.
Sister school exchanges like this are invaluable, fostering cultural understanding, global connections, and meaningful learning experiences for our students. Of course, such an initiative is only possible with the dedication and teamwork of many.
We extend our sincere thanks to the staff, students and families of Cav for their invaluable contributions in making this milestone visit a success. Your collective efforts made this visit a truly memorable experience for our students and guests. Thank you for your enthusiasm, dedication, and support in strengthening our international connections.
We look forward to welcoming our Japanese sister school, Omiya Koryo SHS, in Term 3.
51st German Round Table Discussion (RTdS#51) with Minister for Education and Arts
On 18 March, the German Round Table convened for its 51st meeting. We had the honour of welcoming the Minister for Education and Arts, the Hon. John-Paul Langbroek, whose presence added a significant depth to our discussions.
Key topics on the agenda included updates from the Chair, community developments, and insights from the Education Ministry, with a strong focus on language education and the value of learning European languages—particularly German.
Following the meeting, participants were invited to provide feedback to the Department of Education and Arts (DEA) on:
- Opportunities for operational improvement
- Broader issues surrounding language education
- The role of culture, community, and the arts in strengthening language learning
The 51st meeting served as a valuable platform for collaboration, reflection, and forward planning. We look forward to building on these conversations to further support and promote language education across Queensland.

Science
Year 7 Science students are learning biology this term, with classes heading out of the classroom into the ecosystems of the Cav Rd campus. The practical exercises were aimed at exploring the differences between an ‘oval ecosystem’ and a ‘bush ecosystem’ and are linked to Senior Biology studies in Toohey Forest and Whites Hill Reserve.
Quadrats were prepared in advance of the students arriving, with paper specimens randomly added to boost the species diversity. Students recorded both the biotic factors such as flora and fauna species, including weeds and feral species, as well as the abiotic factors such as light, pH and soil moisture.

As you might expect, the oval was lighter and had less soil moisture and a lower species diversity, while the forest had a lower light reading due to the tree cover, had higher soil moisture and a higher species diversity with many sorts of birds, mammals, reptiles and insects recorded.
This practical gave students an introduction to sampling, field work outside the lab, and was an opportunity to notice and discuss the biology in the natural world that you see every day.

Academy of Ideas
Excursion to Griffith Uni
On Tuesday 6 May, 55 Year 8 Academy of Ideas students visited Griffith Uni Nathan campus for a day of science workshops. We learnt about polymers by making slime, investigated how to reduce water pollution through an experiment and had a lecture about vertebrate diversity on Brisbane Green Roofs by a PhD student.

Year 8 Academy of Ideas
Students from the Year 8 Academy of Ideas have been testing Pseudoscience claims which included the claim that chewing gum stays in your stomach for 7 years. Students were also visited by the UQ high school student engagement team who organised two engineering programs: creating prosthetic limbs and investigating which technologies can help us transition from traditional to renewable energy sources. As the Trimester 1 Year 8 AOI program is almost complete, special thanks must go to Cathy Hill Science teacher for her help in providing these opportunities to students. The final class of Year 8 AOI students will start in Trimester 3.

Year 7 Academy of Ideas
Two classes of Year 7 Academy of ideas will start shortly in Trimester 2, with the final class in Trimester 3.

THANKYOU
Thanks so much to the true Cavroadian spirit in the HPE department. The re-scheduled Cross Country tried to test us all, but once again your dedication to the students made it a winner! Around 160 students took on the modified course, running out and back along the concrete paths of Whites Hill. It was fantastic to see their resilience – and it was only made possible by the collective efforts of our amazing team.
Well done Cav! Another proud day for our community.

Senior Netball
Cav Rd’s senior boys and senior girls’ netball teams competed at the inaugural Carina Leagues Club Tigers Netball School Showdown.
The boys finished in second place behind St James. St James had a goal shooter who must have been about 6’10” and almost impossible to defend – a tough ask for Dom S, but he gave it a great crack! Special shout out to Ben S, our goal defence, who was selected by the CLC Tigers team as the player in the boys’ comp who best represented the CLC Tigers values of respect, perseverance, and sportsmanship.
The girls finished in third place, defeating Mabel Park in their bronze medal play-off. All of the students in the girls team have been involved in netball at Cav Rd since Year 7 and continue to demonstrate their commitment to developing their netball skills and proudly representing our school. They are also a great support to our boys team; with lots of the boys still learning the ins and outs of the game, the girls are always on hand at training and on the sideline to help out and offer advice.

Phoebe H umpired our matches. She is an exceptional umpire and a little terrifying with a whistle in her hands, to be honest!
Big thanks to Mrs Harnischfeger who coaches our boys team. We are very lucky to have her netball expertise and positive energy at our netball events!
Mrs Harnischfeger and I were very grateful to be able to give the seniors a chance to represent the school at this competition. The seniors have been training all year before school – once a week for the boys and twice a week for the girls – and they represented the school beautifully yesterday and had a great day of netball. It was very cool to see a lot of parents out at the courts supporting the teams as well, along with some sibling support from Cav Rd alumni, Ethan Vega and Jacob Hills, both valuable members of our Cav Rd boys netball team back in their school days.
Term 2 is the big one for netball events, so plenty more updates to come!

Indigenous Program News
Beyond the Broncos Program
Future Voices Leadership Program – Eloise
Earlier this year, Year 11 and 12 First Nations students were invited to apply for the Brisbane Broncos Future Voices Leadership Program (FVLP). This program is designed to support young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to grow their skills as leaders, aspire to lead in their school and the community, and foster a sense of self-belief that will encourage them to achieve their goals.
With over 150 applicants statewide vying for 20 positions in the program, it was a highly contested process - congratulations to Cav Year 12 student, Eloise H, who was successfully awarded a FVLP position! Eloise attended the official program launch on 21 March, and was fortunate to meet current NRL play Kotoni Staggs.
Throughout the year Eloise will join other FVLP students at various events including NRL Indigenous Leadership Summit, National Reconciliation Week, NAIDOC Week, Principal Forums and a Leadership Camp in Canberra.

Term 1 rewards
Congratulations to students who received a Term 1 Reward for achieving 90% attendance and excellent effort and behaviour! The reward was a Beyond the Broncos backpack featuring official artwork of First Nations artist, Delvene Cockatoo-Collins, created especially for the 2024 NRL Indigenous Round jersey.

ACU Step-Up Program
The Australian Catholic University (ACU) ‘Uni Step-Up Program’ is offered to Year 11 First Nations students wanting to get a head start on university by studying two first-year units while still in senior secondary school. Last year Cav students Eloise H and Jack S were successful in obtaining a position in this Program - Eloise in the Nursing, Midwifery and Paramedicine program, and Jack in the Business program.

Congratulations to Eloise and Jack who recently graduated the Uni Step-Up Program! This was an exceptional achievement given Eloise and Jack completed this program while also managing their ATAR workload.
