Executive Principal’s Report

Engagement with school. Globally in all OECD countries, there has been a “shift” in student attendance rates since Covid. Five years after the pandemic struck, school attendance rates have not recovered to pre-covid figures. At Cav Rd, our attendance rates up to 2019 was at or very near to 95%. Parents and carers may recall the “Everyday counts” campaign of State schools of years past. This year our attendance rate is just below 93%. This is an average. Many students at Cav Rd have higher than that, but quite a few students also with attendance in the 80% - 90%.
The questions I ask parents and carers to ask is: “is my child’s attendance optimal?” “Are they doing as well as they could?”
Our relatively high rates of attendance likely correlate with our excellent academic and other results and the success of our sports academies and music program. Opportunity.
Having a sense of belonging is key and students are likely to attend at higher rates if they have a connection to their school. Our annual student surveys show time and again that students at Cav Rd recognise the opportunities here, the teaching for high expectations and challenge.
It isn’t appropriate these days to “reward” very high attendance. Nor do we “badger”. There are many factors influencing attendance and it is not simply a matter of “will”. Times have changed, work patterns, family, technology and so on.
For most young people there is still no better course to success from school than the continuity of learning by attending school. Every day one is able.
While parents and carers are aware of our attention to same day and a.m. notices of student absence, to prompt and expect meeting school attendance obligations, we also provide significant support and intervention for students missing school due to health, medical and other legitimate reasons.
This year I introduced a new Hub student support to aid young people who may be finding it hard to attend due to the routines, and the demands of those routines, at school.
If you have concerns for your child is missing school that is voluntary, deliberate or due to circumstances such as health or medical barriers, you can contact Mrs Larsen, Deputy Principal or Mrs Hamill, Guidance Officer and Hub co-ordinator.
Milestones and targets. End of semester milestone fast approaches and with two weeks to go to the end of semester one, all students should be in the throes of completing assignments and/or preparing for summative testing.
In recent newsletters I struck this theme of goal setting, putting in the work, seeking and receiving feedback as means to achieving personal best. And that is the point.
While I predict again that there will be many A’s on student report cards this semester on the score board of student achievement, though gratifying and worth celebrating, the real celebration is where a student can see their improvement towards potential and personal best.
Encouragement is not the same as praise. There are two maxims here. The first is, every child does not win a prize. But that doesn’t mean we discount or fail to recognise effort and improvement and keep encouraging. There are more students who do not get an “A” than do. But they work hard and try. Learning is meant to be hard and is most meaningful when new challenge is met. The second maxim is to recognise the dangers in telling a young person how clever they are in response to high achievement, but the work they put in to achieve it, for one day should that "A” not be realized, we have issues of fallen self-esteem and perhaps seeking to “blame” rather than reflect, take feedback and determine to succeed next time.
Measuring success. Parents and carers will see on our school website our strategic and annual plans of our learning priorities that have line of sight to student outcomes. Schools are obliged in their planning to identify measures and metrics such as A to E pass rates etc. We excel and surpass these with Term 1 this year being the “best” results on record, with pass rates at 98-100%. But though great, we have work to do for the 1 to 2 per cent and trust that lofty result continues through to end of semester.
It is year on year incremental improvement we seek for every young person at Cav Rd, and this delivers persistent and remarkable results. Not only the A’s and B’s, but for students who shift, through working hard, determination and the “right” teaching, from the D to a C, a C to a B and so on.
For some students, naturally gifted in learning, either through memory retention of the taught content knowledge, or are capable in critical and creative thinking and/or articulate to express their thoughts and ideas, will come home with a “bag full” of high achievement results. These skills can and are taught, and the “gems” of and the joy in, learning, is where a young person breaks through in their understanding and mastery of concepts demonstrated in their assessment.
Key to student success is our investment in our “Learning@Cav” approach in teaching and learning, clarity in our aspirations of that incremental improvement, and developing our Mutli-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS). Parents and carers will hear more of this in the second half of this year.
Sub-schools. This year, as our school enrolment clipped 2100 students, I was keen not for Cav Rd become “impersonal” as can occur in a very large school. Our school values and our unique “Cavroadian” identity to not be lost. I introduced into our school’s organizational structure 3 “sub-schools”, of junior (Years 7 and 8), middle (Years 9 and 10) and senior school (Years 11 and 12). Each sub-school of about 700 students, and of themselves is a number equal to a standalone primary or smaller secondary school.
This is to better target our operations and student service to the 3 phases of a student’s “journey” through their secondary schooling and ensuring we know each learner, and they not get “lost”. The vertical home group classes work best in smaller schools, and this also changed this year. Our wellbeing (pastoral care) program was re-shaped to provide better delivery of the themes most appropriate to each year level and phase. For example, there are topics and activities appropriate to the age group, Year 7 clearly having different needs than Year 10 or 12.
Heads of Student Services were appointed this year to lead the student services in each sub-school, as were 3 Deputy Principals, one for each sub-school, overseeing student management.
Our work progresses to refine this work and direction that will largely influence the Cav Rd “brand”. While our school is over 70 years old with reputation for excellence above all else, we remain agile and seek ways to improve.
Communicating with your child’s school. The State Government has introduced changes to the Education Act and is currently undertaking its “Red tape reduction” reviews and recommendations.
Parents and carers should note that the “right to disconnect” applies to State school employees including school leaders and teachers. More can be found at this media report link
Further guidelines can be found here at these links
Temporary school leadership changes. I will be on leave until Monday 28 July. Mr Beebe will be Acting Principal during that time.
I wish students every success for Semester One and all families a safe and enjoyable winter break.

Supporting Your Year 10 Student Through Senior Subject Selection Across Term 3, your child will be making important decisions about the pathways and subjects they’ll study in Years 11 and 12. While this can feel daunting, it’s also an exciting opportunity to help them reflect on their interests, strengths, and future aspirations. At Cav Rd, we encourage students to choose subjects based on three key factors: what they enjoy, what they’re good at, and what aligns with any future pathways they’re considering. Striking a balance across these areas gives students the best chance of staying motivated and achieving success throughout their senior years.
A common misconception we hear is that students should choose subjects purely because they “scale well.” It’s true that some subjects can contribute more favourably to an ATAR, but the reality is far more nuanced. A student who is deeply engaged and performs strongly in subjects they enjoy is likely to do better overall than a student who struggles through subjects chosen only for scaling.
It’s also worth remembering that ATAR scores and university prerequisites are not as rigid as they might seem. Many universities offer flexible entry pathways, flexible prerequisites, including bridging courses, folio-based applications and other factors that take a range of circumstances into account. It’s crucial that families look carefully at requirements for any pathway a student may be interested in—whether that be a trade where the choice of Mathematics may matter, or university, where meeting their prerequisites may matter. Either way, it is important to keep in mind that not all courses require high ATARs. In fact, many university pathways are accessible with modest scores.
To support families through this process, we have a number of key events and resources coming up:
- Subject Selection Documentation Available – Monday 14 July
This includes Subject Selection guides, subject prerequisites, VET information, QTAC guides, BYOD for Years 10 – 12 students. These are helpful resources to begin conversations at home. - Careers Expo – Wednesday 6 August (3:30pm to 6:00pm)
A valuable opportunity for students and families to speak with industry representatives, training providers, and tertiary institutions. Detailed information will be emailed to you in due course. - SETP (Student Education and Training Plan) Interviews – Monday 25 August and Tuesday 26 August These individual meetings are a vital part of the subject selection process and help students confirm their pathway decisions with the support of a staff member and parent/carer.
In the lead-up to these events, we encourage students and parents to:
- Explore course prerequisites and pathways via QTAC or university websites.
- Check past ATAR thresholds for courses of interest, noting they change each year.
- Speak with Guidance Officers and Heads of Department for tailored advice.
- Choose subjects that sustain interest and motivation. The final years of school require focus and effort—choosing subjects a student is passionate about makes a real difference.
Finally, please reassure your child that this is not a once-only decision that locks in their future. The world beyond school is full of opportunities and flexible pathways. Helping them make thoughtful, informed choices now is a gift—but so is giving them the confidence to pursue what they love.
As always, we’re here to help. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you need advice or support.

Year 7 Camp
Year 7 camp - what a week it was! Over five days, 330 enthusiastic students and 21 dedicated staff took on a range of exciting activities that tested their courage, collaboration, and creativity.
From the very first day, students embraced the adventure with open minds and a willingness to have a go. A standout moment was the flying fox, where students launched themselves from a tall platform and zipped across a large body of water. It was an exhilarating challenge that pushed them out of their comfort zones and into the air (with plenty of screaming)!
Throughout the week, students also engaged in a variety of team challenges that developed their patience, communication, and leadership skills. One favourite was the raft-building challenge, where groups had to construct a working raft together. For some, their teamwork paid off with a smooth ride onto the lake. For others, a refreshing dip reminded them of the importance of structure and support - literally!
This camp was more than just fun. It was an important opportunity for students to bond, build resilience, and grow together as a year level.
We’d also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our teachers, whose energy and commitment made this experience possible. Attending camp is no small task, but our staff handled every moment, from early starts to late-night check-ins, with smiles, encouragement, and a whole lot of heart.
We are proud of our Year 7 students and incredibly grateful to our school community for making this camp a success.

Thank you to Hively Health for sponsoring Year 7 Camp 2025!

Year 8
This term, some of our Year 8s have been engaging in the Onwards and Upwards leadership development program. Students have been engaging with volunteer mentors in a series of thoughtful and empowering sessions.
This program is designed to help students develop a stronger sense of self, while beginning to shape a vision for their futures. Through guided conversations and reflective activities, students are identifying their personal values, setting meaningful goals, and learning how to make everyday choices that align with who they are and who they hope to become.
We’ve seen students grow in confidence as they begin to understand their own strengths, explore what leadership means to them, and build the mindset needed to step into new challenges. Whether it’s setting goals for school or life beyond it, this program encourages students to think boldly, act with purpose, and live by their values.
We are incredibly proud of our students who have embraced this journey with openness and maturity. A special thank you goes to the dedicated mentors volunteering their time, and to our staff who support and guide this important work.
Together, we’re helping to build not just future leaders, but thoughtful, values-driven individuals ready to make a positive impact.

Careers, Choices & Challenges
As we move through Term 2, the Middle Phase focus has been squarely on careers and subject selections. It’s an exciting and important time for our Year 9 and 10 students as they begin to shape their learning pathways.
This week, we welcomed a guest presenter from the University of Queensland who shared valuable insights into future study and career options. Next week, our Year 10 cohort will hear from the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), continuing to broaden their awareness of post-school opportunities. These sessions, alongside our YLC lessons, are designed to support informed decision-making—whether that’s selecting subjects for Year 10 or preparing for the SETP interviews in Week 7, Term 3.
In addition to academic planning, we’ve also seen some incredible achievements outside the classroom. Several of our Year 10 students have recently completed their Rite of Passage activities. A special mention goes to those who participated in the World’s Greatest Shave—bravely cutting or shaving their hair to raise funds for blood cancer research. Another group of determined students pushed through sore legs and tough terrain to complete the Brisbane Kokoda Challenge, demonstrating resilience, teamwork, and grit.

Well done to all students for embracing the challenges and opportunities this term has brought. Keep showing that Cav Rd spirit!

Mr Leonard Lai
As we pass the halfway mark of Term 2, I want to take a moment to acknowledge just how much is happening across the Senior Phase at Cav Rd. Our students have been stepping up in big ways – whether it’s through leadership, service, celebration, or simply showing up each day with purpose and pride. It’s a busy time, but it’s also incredibly rewarding to see the energy and spirit in our senior students as they continue to shape their final years of high school.

Push-Up Challenge for Mental Health (Led by Students, Fuelled by Purpose)
One of the most exciting initiatives this term has been the launch of the Push-Up Challenge by our 2025 Senior Leadership Team and Student Council. Kicking off on Wednesday 4 June, this challenge isn’t just about the push-ups (although our students are smashing the numbers already!) It’s about raising awareness for mental health and opening up conversations that matter. All donations raised go directly to Lifeline, a service that plays a critical role in supporting Australians in crisis. The student leaders need to be commended for their commitment and compassion. They’re not just leading events; they’re leading with heart. Support our campaign here: https://www.thepushupchallenge.com.au/fundraisers/cavroadshs
Year 12 – 100 Days to Go Celebration
Next week, our Year 12 students will be celebrating a huge milestone, 100 days to go until the end of their high school journey. This special event will take place on Monday of Week 9, and it’s a chance for our seniors to reflect, reconnect, and reignite their focus for the final stretch of 2025. We’ll be marking the occasion with cake, celebration, and a few nostalgic moments. I encourage families to have conversations at home around how your young person is feeling, this is a powerful and emotional time for many.
Year 11 Dinner Dance – A Night to Remember at The Gabba
I’m thrilled to officially announce that the Year 11 Dinner Dance will be held at The Gabba Function Rooms on Tuesday 12 August from 6:00–10:00pm. This will be a fantastic evening of music, dinner, dancing, and celebration. A reward for the hard work our Year 11’s have put in this year. Even more exciting is that a group of students have volunteered to help lead the event planning. From choosing the theme to deciding on special touches and extras, these students are making sure the night reflects their cohort’s energy and personality.
Year 12 Formal – The Big Finale at The Rivershed
The countdown is on for one of the biggest events of the year, our Year 12 Formal, which will be held on Thursday 18 September at the beautiful Rivershed at Howard Smith Wharves. This venue is stunning and overlooks the Brisbane River, a fitting location to celebrate the incredible journey of our Year 12s. Our student-led Formal Committee is working hard behind the scenes to shape a night to remember.

A huge shoutout to our Senior Sport Prefects who are running weekly CavenDish events every Friday at lunchtime. These friendly competitions are a great way for senior students to stay active, socialise, and take a much-needed brain break from their studies. Whether it's endball, dodgeball, or mini games, there's something for everyone! Not only is it fun, but participation also earns house points, so it's a win-win! It’s been fantastic to see students come together, unwind, and build house pride in the process.

- QTAC applications
- Post-school options

A Call to Families – Especially for Year 11

School Captain Report - Seraphie & Henry

As we near the end of Term 2 and approach the halfway point of the school year, there’s been plenty happening around Cav! Our Senior leadership team has been working hard to make 2025 one to remember.

One highlight was the annual Year 12 Mother’s Day Breakfast, held on the Friday of Week 4. Organised by the Captaincy Team, the event was an opportunity to thank the incredible women in each of our lives for all the support, love, and encouragement throughout the years. Year 12 students and their mothers were invited to bake together and bring their goodies along on the day – the turnout was fantastic! With fun games, prizes to be won and a free coffee van generously provided by the P&C, the morning was one to remember. Thank you to everyone who came along and helped make the event so special.

Week 7 saw the return of one of Cav’s most inspiring events – The World’s Greatest Shave. Organised by our amazing Community prefects, the event raised vital funds for the Leukaemia Foundation, supporting Australians living with blood cancer through essential research, support services, and advocacy. Our amazing students and staff raised a massive $16,880 with the event contributing an additional $2000 – and the final total is still growing. We are so proud of everyone who took part, whether by shaving, donating, or simply showing support on the day. A special thank you to our Wellbeing Sponsor, Hively Health, for supporting the event and anyone who helped on the day.
We look forward to the rest of 2025!

Guidance Corner
Two weeks ago, a small group of Wellbeing staff attended a one-day professional development around attendance and belonging in school run by Dr Doug Fisher. This event was very informative and practical, and the team took away important and useful information to better support the Cavendish Road SHS community when it comes to attendance.
Attendance: Why School Attendance Matters – Making Every Day Count
Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, school attendance has declined both globally and here in Queensland. Prior to the pandemic, the average attendance rate for Queensland state schools was approximately 90% (Queensland Education, 2019). By 2024, the figure for all schools had dropped to around 86%, meaning students are now missing an additional three days of school per semester compared to pre-pandemic levels (Queensland Education, 2025). Although attendance is gradually improving, it has yet to return to pre-2020 standards. This highlights the ongoing need for schools, families, and communities to work together in supporting consistent student attendance and engagement.
There are six main reasons why students may be absent from school: academic difficulties, bullying, health-related concerns, socioeconomic challenges, mental health, and family circumstances. Health-related concerns currently account for the most common cause of absence (Fisher, 2025). However, further analysis reveals that academic difficulties—such as pressure from assessments, struggling to understand material, or feeling overwhelmed—are a significant factor contributing to absenteeism. While students may take time off to ‘catch up’ or study, this can increase anxiety and widen learning gaps over time. Research shows that absenteeism negatively impacts student achievement, with a -0.37 effect size on learning outcomes (Fisher, 2025; Hattie, 2008), underscoring the importance of regular attendance for academic success.
The Impact of Missed Learning
Attendance Rate | Days of Learning Missed Per Year |
95% | 9 days |
90% | 18 days |
85% | 27 days |
80% | 36 days |
The Cost of Being Late
Late by | Weekly Lost Learning Time | Equivalent Lost Learning Time Per Year |
10 minutes | 50 minutes | Nearly 1.5 weeks |
20 minutes | 1 hour 40 minutes | Nearly 2.5 weeks |
30 minutes | Half a day | 4 weeks |
1 hour | 1 full day | 8 weeks |
Why Regular Attendance Is Vital
Consistent school attendance ensures students are continuously engaged in learning, helping them build strong academic foundations and achieve better results. It also reduces stress caused by falling behind and needing to catch up. Beyond academics, regular attendance promotes social development, emotional wellbeing, and essential life skills such as time management and resilience. Being at school daily allows students to develop meaningful relationships with teachers and peers, fostering a sense of belonging and support.
The Queensland Department of Education recognises that improving attendance is a shared responsibility. Families play a critical role in setting expectations and helping students understand the importance of attending school every day. Together, schools and families can support young people to succeed academically and prepare for a successful future.
Within our school context
At Cavendish Road State High School, our Wellbeing and Inclusion Teams are actively working to support students in attending school consistently and making the most of their educational experience. One key factor influencing attendance is a student’s sense of belonging. Research shows that students who feel a strong connection to their school are more likely to attend regularly and achieve higher academic results (Smith, Fisher, Frey, Pompei, & Stewart, 2024). A sense of belonging also positively impacts students’ physical, social, and mental health (Raufelder et al., 2012). This sense of belonging is closely linked to the relationships students build at school, with the teacher-student relationship being the most significant driver (Smith et al., 2024).
With the shift this year toward a more coordinated model of student support at Cavendish Road SHS through the implementation of a Multi-Tiered System of Support, we recognise that every staff member plays a vital role in this work. In the classroom, this means ensuring all students feel engaged, supported, and connected. Our support teams work in partnership with teachers to create a consistent, caring approach to both learning and relationships—helping every student thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

The next round of ATAR estimate meetings with Year 12 ATAR eligible students will commence in Term 3. Students are working towards preparing for their IA3 assessment and their external exams, held in Term 4. We will be conducting ‘mock exams’ in Term 3 to prepare students with the skills they will require to manage the external exam process. Details of the arrangements for the ‘Mock exam block’ will be released next term. Students should be frequently checking their MyQCE account:
SET Planning – Year 10
Mr Mitch Baker, Head of Student Services Year 9 & 10, is working with the Year 10 cohort to prepare students for their SET planning which occurs in Term 3. With enough information and experience, students can be confidently on track for success and ready for their future pathways. My message to Year 10s has been to PICK and STICK to the subjects and courses they select. This will mean making informed decisions at SET planning time.
The Careers EXPO at the Brisbane Convention Centre continues this Saturday, and I encourage all Year 10 students and their families to attend.

School-based apprenticeships and traineeships (SATs)
A Queensland school-based apprenticeship or traineeship (SAT) lets high school students start training for a career while still at school.
Students:
- Stay enrolled in school and work part-time (usually one day a week or during school holidays)
- Complete a nationally recognised Certificate II or III qualification
- Get hands-on, paid work experience with a real employer
- Work towards full-time employment or further training after school
SATs combine school, paid work, and training. They are a great way to build skills, gain industry experience, and make a head start on a career while working towards a QCE.
More information about SATs is available at: https://www.qld.gov.au/education/apprenticeships/school-based
Showcasing Our Apprentices

International Homestay
WHAT IS IT LIKE TO BE A HOMESTAY PROVIDER?
From Lucy, Trent & Wei
It’s been wonderful working with the school and helping the students at a very personal level.
The time that we spend with our students, often more than some of our own relatives; we become close and connected. From assisting them with school to building relationships, it can be challenging from time to time; but it makes it all very meaningful.
There are definitely some ‘headache’ moments and mostly there are some moments where we feel a sense of achievement and satisfaction from the students. They make us proud.
The school is the backbone of it all. We couldn’t thank the coordinators enough for their tireless efforts and love that they give so much to each and every student and their homestay family and family overseas.
We have been doing it for over 10 years and we are looking forward to working with the team for many more years to come.

If you would like to know more about being a part of our International Student Program and experiencing incredible global connections, please contact our Homestay Coordinator at pcarl28@eq.edu.au

Geography excursion – Year 9
Year 9 Geographers recently left the four walls of the classroom and ventured to the Beechmont area to visit three farms to collect data for their upcoming Geography report. They visited Limes4U, Providence Farm and Fig Tree Hill farm.
Students got to pat some adorable farm animals and even made their own lime juice, which was very sour. By all accounts the excursion was a great success with some students not wanting to head home after the day!
Thanks so much to our fantastic and dedicated Geography teachers Ms Bose and Ms Williams for making experiences like this possible for our students!

Year 11 Legal Studies Court Excursion Reflection
On Thursday 15 and Friday 16 May, the Year 11 Legal Studies classes visited the Queensland Supreme and District Courts to deepen their understanding of the Australian legal system.
Students had the valuable opportunity to hear from an esteemed judge, who shared insights into the jury empanelment process and discussed various career pathways in the legal profession.
The first-hand experience of viewing the legal system at work allowed us to learn about court etiquette and the layout of the court. We were able to sit in the public gallery for a variety of cases relating to serious offences, including both sentencings and part-trials. This meant we watched as the prosecutors and defence lawyers communicated with the judge to ensure both a fair trial and fair sentence for the defendant, while also protecting the community.
The excursion also helped students understand the real-world application of legal principles studied in class.

A letter from Mr Mannen @ Omiya Koryo High School, Saitama, Japan
In December last year, 15 students and two Japanese language teachers from our school went on a study tour to Japan. Alongside sightseeing in major cities such as Tokyo and Kyoto, our students stayed for about a week at our sister school, Omiya Koryo High School, where they experienced Japanese high school life and everyday family life through a homestay program.
While it is a well-known fact that Omiya Koryo has been our sister school for many years, the records detailing the circumstances of the initial partnership were limited, and there were multiple conflicting accounts. Therefore, we inquired with Omiya Koryo to see if they had any relevant records. Additionally, after contacting the Saitama Prefecture Board of Education, we learned that the sister school relationship between our school and Omiya Koryo spans nearly 40 years. The school exchange began as part of the sister relationship between Queensland and Saitama Prefecture, and we take pride in the fact that our school was the first in our state to establish a sister school exchange with a high school in Saitama Prefecture. With this history in mind, all parties involved are renewed in their commitment to further enriching the sister school exchange between our two schools.
Please see link below to read a message from Mr Mannen of Omiya Koryo High School. He shares a valuable account of the circumstances at the time, conveyed with such vividness that it feels like reading a novel.

Science
Cav Rd was fortunate to secure the Engineers Without Borders (EWB) QUT chapter to come out and deliver two workshops to some of our students. These workshops discussed problems created from a lack of resources in developing countries due to social and economic constraints and students were challenged to explore appropriate, sustainable and cost-effective technological solutions. The ‘Clean water workshop’ utilised students’ scientific knowledge of separating mixtures whilst collaboratively addressing obstacles such as lack of funds or literacy with their assigned country. The winning team had to produce the fastest, cleanest water whilst working with those around them.

The Prosthetic Leg highlighted the medical side of Engineering. Students needed to collaboratively frame to construct a prosthetic leg mechanism assessing material selection and the effectiveness of design.
Our Year 12 Engineering students have begun their IA3 where they are developing an Engineered solution for the drivetrain and wheels of a rover to move successfully on the undulating surface of Mars. This is their last internal assessment for Engineering at Cav.

Academy of Ideas
Year 7 – Trimester 2 Tuesday Sport Program
The Year 7 Academy of Ideas (AOI) students have commenced their Trimester 2 Tuesday sport program, with initial focus being on Humanitarian Engineering. This field of engineering involves using technology to create practical solutions that improve the wellbeing of marginalized or underserved communities. In the first session, students participated in a Floating Houses activity. They explored a region in Cambodia and were challenged to design and build floating structures using limited materials and a set budget. The goal was to simulate real-world engineering constraints faced in flood-prone regions. In the second session, the Engineers Without Borders (EWB) QUT chapter delivered an engaging workshop on Water Filtration, emphasizing the global importance of clean water access. Students gained hands-on experience designing basic filtration systems and learned about the real-world impact of clean water technology.
One additional Year 7 AOI class will begin this program in Trimester 3.

Year 8 – SPARQ-ed Excursion
All Year 8 Academy of Ideas students should now have received invitations for the upcoming 1-Day excursion to SPARQ-ed (Students Performing Advanced Research Queensland Education), held at the Translational Research Institute in Woolloongabba. Students will attend on either 30 July or 31 July, depending on group allocations.
The excursion includes a hands-on Cell Biology workshop, where students will observe the effects of salt concentrations on HeLa cells using light microscopes. They will analyse the results to understand the concept of osmolarity. In the second component, students will explore the structure and function of prokaryotic cells through practical investigation.
Year 7 & 8 AOI Camps
Camp planning is well underway for both Year 7 and Year 8 Academy of Ideas students:
- Year 7 Camp: Hastings Point | 23–24 October
- Year 8 Camp: Numinbah Valley | 30–31 October
Invitations will be distributed soon via QParents.

Metropolitan Finals Series - BASKETBALL
The Year 9 Boys and Girls Basketball teams earned the privilege of representing Cavendish Road SHS at the Met Gala Basketball Day at Cornubia Sports Centre to determine the best school basketball teams in SEQ. The Boys were competitive all day, unfortunately losing the semi-final, doing themselves very proud.
Taking in everything they had learned when they first played and lost to Marsden, the girls regrouped, strategized and pulled off the perfect gameplan. An early lead built off defensive pressure and smart passing leading to early goals from Chloe and Heidi gave the Year 9 girls an unassailable lead. With Marsden forced into a pressured effort to try and come from behind, our girls played the clock brilliantly and not only held on to their lead, but scored the last points of the match to claim a 15-9 lead and the title of the BEST YEAR 9 GIRLS TEAM IN THE DISTRICT AND SURROUNDS!
Proud is an understatement and the way both teams handled the pressure, expectations and excitement of the day can only be applauded.

Cav Shines at Readers Cup!
Our Year 7/8 team did Cav proud at the Brisbane South Readers Cup last Wednesday, coming a thrilling second—just one point off the win! This impressive student-led effort showcased outstanding dedication, teamwork, and a shared love of reading. The Readers Cup is the flagship event of the Children’s Book Council of Australia – Queensland Branch. It’s a state-wide competition where teams of students read a set list of books and then compete in a quiz-style challenge against other schools. This year, the top three teams in our region were all public schools, with the title going to our neighbours at Mount Gravatt SHS—a fantastic result for state education. Huge congratulations to our brilliant team: Liliana, Tabbitha, Isabella, Audrey, and Isabella—you’ve made us proud!

Our Year 9/10 Readers Cup team delivered an absolutely stellar performance at the Brisbane South District Readers Cup competition! Representing Cav with confidence and demonstrating a deep love of reading, the team dominated the scoreboard from the very first round.
By the end of the night, they had stormed ahead of their nearest competitors—Brisbane Boys Grammar and Clairvaux Mackillop College—to claim first place by a massive margin. Their commanding lead secured them a place in the State Finals this September, where they’ll go up against the best teams from across Queensland.
This high-energy, student-led success was a brilliant display of teamwork, commitment, and literary smarts. Readers Cup is a much-loved annual event run by the Children’s Book Council of Australia – Queensland Branch, and we’re thrilled to see our students shine on this statewide stage. Huge congratulations to our champions—Abigail, Zoe, Emily, and Charlotte!
