Executive Principal’s Report

Springtime is the season of festivals, football finals, and transitions that begin for students in each phase of their learning and for Year 12 bridging to post-school plans and aspirations.
Year 10 SET planning is a mammoth effort and worth every moment in its planning and execution. These plans are sign posts to students entering the formal phase of their senior schooling, where working back from current longer-term goals still providing flexibility to tangent paths to “earning or learning” past Year 12.
Every student needs to be on a pathway at Cav Rd to a minimum of achieving their QCE or QCIA, and for those 80% or more of students choosing ATAR pathways to maximise their scores, and students wishing to enter employment either in a trade or other pathway succeed in their ambitions. Cav Rd has an exceptional track record of post-school outcomes.
I thank parents and carers for your close interest and support for this process. The opportunity for students to speak of their personal ambitions and expectations of themselves was quite powerful in that gradual release to them of ownership with optimism.
Year 10 subject selection is taken very seriously, with much advice given and heeded. With the rigour of QCAA requirements making the “right” subject choices for Years 11 and 12 an uninterrupted and continuous program is what we aim for.
Junior school subject selections where electives coming up make available elements of the Australian Curriculum of a broad general education where self-selection in elective subjects allows students opportunity to explore talents and interests and above all where their aptitudes lie that may wish to pursue in senior years.
Sports finals successes again this year in and across our academies featured in this newsletter.
Senior students engaged in mock and block exams will see light at the end of the tunnel with spring holidays approaching and for Year 12 school formal being one of the rites of passage moments being a highlight. I am looking forward to Year 12 Graduation that we celebrate the passage of this cohort to great things.
Engagement and achievement go hand in hand and while we are three quarters through this year, it's still important to keep up optimal attendance at school. To engage is to attend school and authorised off campus learning experiences. Engagement is also about participating, co-operating and doing the work to the best of one’s ability. At Cav we prioritise looking at the next ‘edge’ in student learning and achievement and that every student learns to be accountable and responsible for their own learning and being “present” in both body and mind, appreciative of the teachers and teaching and other opportunities of their school experience.
I wish all families an enjoyable spring break.
Richard Usher BA LLB Dip Teach - Executive Principal

Guidance Corner
There has been a range of updates to the parent resources and resources for young people on the school website to ensure that all links are working and the most current supports are listed for parents to be able to use.
Parenting adolescents can be a challenging time and can mean that new approaches and resources are needed to tackle challenges such as emotional regulation, anxiety as well as challenging behaviours. We strongly recommend that all parents have a look at the online Triple P Parenting course. There are courses for all ages and you can complete them privately in your own time. Parent Line is also available for advice, counselling and to listen to podcasts. Further challenges can be supported by Family and Child Connect with referrals to local organisations that can be found to suit the needs of the family.
The resources for young people provides links to resources to Headspace, Mood Gym, Kids Helpline, Reach Out Australia, Lifeline, Beyond Blue and Bullying No Way. Be sure to have a look and see which resources might benefit your child and discuss it with them.

Holocaust Museum
On 28 August, the Year 10 History prep class along with Ms Bolton-Hall and Ms Signorini ventured into the city to visit the Queensland Holocaust Memorial Museum. Students were met with two tour guides from the museum who were incredibly informative and passionate. Students behaved in an exemplary manner and were complimented by many museum staff who noted their engagement.
Well done Year 10s!

Year 10 Rite of Passage – History tutorials
For part of Terms 2 & 3, one of the Year 10 students Abby T has worked with students from Year 7 & 8 to help with their assignments and any questions they may have had.
This opportunity has provided the chance for the students to gain help from their upper classmates and demonstrates the values of Cav Rd and all the students.
Finally, history tutorials have been a great success with plenty of students turning up every Thursday first break to get help. We hope to have more students attend in the future!
Massive thank you and congratulations to Abby!

Geography – Australian Competition
Year 9 Geographers participated in the Australian Geography Competition in May. Special mention must go to:
Alister C
Samuel C
Luana D
Zac R
For receiving High Distinctions.
Finally, the Humanities Department would like to congratulate one of our students who has managed to achieve within the top 1% in Australia. Well done to Casey S – this is an incredible achievement!

Omiya Koryo Exchange Program 2025
From 6 to 13 August, 19 Japanese students from our sister school of 40 years, Omiya Koryo High School, visited our school. This school exchange takes place every two years, with our visit to Omiya Koryo scheduled for 2026.
On the first day of their stay, a 40th anniversary ceremony, combined with a welcome reception, was held at our school’s PAC to commemorate 40 years of the sister school partnership. Our school was the first in Queensland to establish a sister school relationship with a Japanese school. The ceremony was attended by our principal and numerous staff members, with special guests including Consul Ishikawa and his wife from the Consulate-General of Japan in Brisbane, as well as the Scott Ness family, who represented our school as the very first exchange students to visit Omiya Koryo in 1987.
During the ceremony, a speech from the principal of Omiya Koryo High School was read on their behalf, and the visiting students performed their school anthem. At the conclusion of the ceremony, our principal, Mr Richard Usher, signed two memoranda crafted on washi paper by Omiya Koryo’s art department to mark the 40th anniversary of the partnership. One of the memoranda was taken back to Omiya Koryo.
During their stay, the Omiya Koryo students participated in a range of activities, including learning about Indigenous painting, taking part in physical education classes under the guidance of our senior students, and creating postcards using collage techniques under the instruction of our art department staff. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the staff members who prepared these special learning opportunities for the Japanese students.

Perhaps the most memorable moments for the students came during their homestay experiences with volunteer host families from our school community. Despite having introduced themselves via video chats and email exchanges prior to arrival, the Japanese students were visibly nervous when first meeting their host families. However, by the time they had to say goodbye, there were many tears shed—both in gratitude for the wonderful experiences provided and in sadness at parting with their host families.
On the final day, in the quieter-than-usual Elgar Street due to the EKKA holiday, the Japanese students expressed their gratitude by singing a Japanese anime theme song to their host families, its melody resonating beautifully. We once again extend our deepest gratitude to the host families and our school’s buddy students who prepared such unforgettable and beautiful experiences for them.
For 40 years, this sister school exchange program has provided students from both schools with invaluable life-changing learning opportunities. A link to the student video of the Welcome Ceremony can be found here:
It is our hope that this sister school relationship will continue to thrive and grow in the years to come.
Year 9/10 Obento Day
Last month Year 9 & 10 Japanese students had the pleasure of ordering Obento lunch-boxes from Mazri Kitchen at Underwood. This annual event gives our language learners the opportunity to taste authentic Japanese cuisine while experiencing true high school life through the eating of an Obento (lunchbox). This food would typically be prepared as a daily lunch for students in Japan. Students had the choice of Chicken Katsu (cutlet), Teriyaki Chicken or Beef or Tofu. All students agreed that the Obento were “Oishikatta” or “Umai” (delicious).

Science
This term was a big one for Science, with Science Week in Week 5 standing out as a highlight of the year. This year the theme was “Decoding the Universe - Exploring the Unknown with Nature’s Hidden Language”. Bronwen our lab technician transformed the Science foyer to reflect this theme which added to the atmosphere as students entered L block. The week featured hands-on workshops for both our students and four local primary schools. Students became geneticists extracting DNA from strawberries, virologists diagnosing CAV-virus infections in zoo animals, and engineers designing elastic-band-powered cars in our ‘maker-space’.

Our STEM Leaders and UQ Science Ambassadors kept the energy buzzing with daily science challenges for students. Highlights included a spirited Teacher vs Student Kahoot, where Dr Darben narrowly claimed victory, and a fast-paced “Chase-style” competition on parade with students valiantly attempting, but failing, to outsmart Dr Darben and Dr Bowles. We are already looking forward to Science week 2026.

Head of Student Services - Year 9 & 10

Mitch Baker
Year 9
This term, our Year 9 students have been engaging in career-based activities during YLC to help guide their subject selection process. It is important that both students and parents/carers are well informed about the subjects on offer before selections are made. All relevant information can be found on the Cavendish Road SHS website under the Curriculum tab. We encourage families to explore these resources together to support thoughtful and informed choices.
Year 10
Thank you to all parents and carers who attended the recent Senior Education and Training Plan (SETP) interviews. Your support and involvement play a key role in guiding students through their senior pathway planning. Next week in YLC, students will take the next step by creating their Senior Contract, outlining their goals and commitments as they prepare for their senior years of study.
Good luck to all students for their assessment and I hope they all have a relaxing holiday break and return ready to finish the year strong in Term 4.
Mitch Baker – Head of Student Services Year 9 & 10
Head of Student Services – Year 11 & 12

Leonard Lai
As we move through Term 3, there have been some wonderful celebrations and important milestones for our senior students.
Father’s Day Breakfast
Last week, we were delighted to welcome students and their families to our Father’s Day Breakfast. It was a fantastic community event that brought together students, parents, and staff to celebrate the important role fathers and father figures play in the lives of our young people. Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to making the morning so special.

Year 12 Mock Exams
Our Year 12 students are now undertaking their mock exams, designed to replicate the conditions of the upcoming external assessments. These exams provide a valuable opportunity for students to practise time management, refine their exam strategies, and build confidence for Term 4. We encourage families to support their students during this time by helping them establish good routines around rest, nutrition, and study balance.
Year 11 Block Exams – Week 9
Looking ahead, Year 11 students will begin their block exams on Thursday of Week 9. This will be their first experience of the block exam structure, and an important step as they prepare for the transition into Year 12. Students should ensure they are well-prepared, aware of their timetable, and ready to approach these assessments with focus and commitment.
2026 Student Leadership Team
Finally, we are proud to announce the 2026 Student Leadership Team. Following a comprehensive application, speech, and interview process, our next cohort of student leaders was introduced to the Year 11 cohort this week. These students will step into key roles that uphold our school’s values and traditions, while also shaping the future of Cavendish Road SHS. Congratulations to all successful candidates, we look forward to seeing you lead with integrity, enthusiasm, and commitment to our community.

Leonard Lai – Head of Student Services Year 11 & 12
Academy of Ideas
Puzzle Room

In the past two weeks the Year 9 AOI classes went on an excursion to the Puzzled Escape rooms, where they split off into teams of 6 and competed to escape before the allocated hour was up. We went in confident that we would complete the challenge in no time at all and were surprised to find it was a fun and challenging experience. Across the two classes four out of eight teams escaped, with one team almost breaking the record. I would recommend it to anyone wanting to test their teamwork and logic skills - Year 9 Abigail M.
SPORT@CAV
Touch Football Academy
Over the last number of weeks, we have had two major carnivals. The first of which was Sunshine Coast All Schools, held on 10 August. Cavendish Road sent 9 teams up the coast to the Caboolture Touch Association. The biggest number of teams we have ever sent to a carnival. All teams did a phenomenal job over the long day. Some arriving at 6:30am and not leaving until 7:30pm that night. Our biggest results were the 15 boys and 15 girls taking home the Sunny coast championship. The 15 girls with a tight 3-2 win over PBC and the 15 boys with a 6-4 win over Gympie State High School. Our 3 development teams, girls 13s Black, 15s Black and Open boys Black all put in hard work through their pool games. These teams are just as important to the academy as the A teams. As in future years some of these players will be making the step up and these carnivals help their progression enormously. The Open girls were bumped out in the semis and the open boys went down in the grand final to Chancellor. The day couldn’t be possible without our wonderful coaches, Mr Cross, Mr Gross, Ms Peachey, Mr Glachan and Ms Morgan for arriving at the crack of dawn and staying until the sun went down. You make the experience for us, the students truly special.
On the following weekend, 16 and 17August, we had our 2nd biggest tournament of the year, Brisbane All Schools. The 15 and 13 boys had un unlucky run and didn’t get past pool stage. The Open girls, Open boys and 13 girls all went down in the finals with respectable places. The 15 girls however had yet again another perfect run through the 2 long days. They were crowned Brisbane champions with a 6-5 win over All Hallows. With Mr Glachan away coaching for Metropolitan East at Queensland Schools, it was fantastic to see the amazing teachers once again stepping up to help support and coach the kids. And also to our student managers.
The Academy is now looking forward to our last leadup Carnival on 15 and 16 September, Kings All Schools. Before the main event, Queensland All Schools.

Year 9 Girls Football – Metro Champions!
Bright and early on the morning of Wednesday 3 September, 60 eager players across Years 7-10 boarded the bus at Elgar St en route to a Gala Day of Metro Finals at Oxley F.C.
Among that contingent were the imperious Year 9 Girls Football team. Somewhat of a misnomer given only half of the team are in Year 9, with the rest of our players comprising Year 8s and even one gun Year 7 student, yet here was our group getting ready to contend for the title of the best team in South-East Queensland.
Emails, at 8:30pm the night before and 6:30am the morning of, ruled out a gun striker and our determined goal-keeper (Aryana S and Peytton-Jo V respectively), meaning we were down to just one reserve and no regular goal-keeper, but thar didn’t deter this brilliant bunch.
To say I had little to do is an injustice to the word ‘little’ as this group were so diligent, organised, self-motivated and skilful that my role as clipboard-holder was purely for occupying a space – the way each of these girls handled themselves was exemplary as ambassadors for the school and role models for other students.
Lead flawlessly by Coco L as captain, her Year 9 contingent of Lily Mae C, Lola S, Leighton P, Persia K, Maja H and Ivy F were the perfect influence for the younger ensemble of Anice U, Alyiana L, Jade S, Olive R and Alyssa L.
The girls started their match against Stretton with impetus and drive and never looked like slowing down. Early goals to Maja, Coco, Jade and Persia gave a commanding 4-0 lead that didn’t half-tell the story of the dominance the girls displayed.
Half-time couldn’t come soon enough given the heat, but the perfect reassurance as a coach to hear was that the girls weren’t willing to take it easy, but instead wanted to take it up a notch.
And take it up a notch they did.
Strong second half performances in the entire defensive line paved the success up front, allowing Maja to add another two goals to her tally, Ivy and Lily coming up from deep to score a ‘worldie’ each and Jade to add another to her tally.
Finishing the match as resounding 9-0 winners was just reward for a team that has all the skill to go on to do brilliant things in their footballing journeys and couldn’t have happened to a nicer bunch of humans.

In a landscape of constantly changing levels of sports participation, a result and a day like this is a perfect reminder of how galvanising it is to live these shared experiences with your peers. If you see any of these students around, please congratulate them on a win well-taken and commend them for the way in which they represented so much of what makes Cav Rd great.
Mitchell Evans – Football Coach & Teacher
QLD Senior Schools Cup Volleyball
Congratulations to the Open Girls volleyball team who took out their division of the QLD Schools Cup Volleyball in August. A special thank you to former student Emma Smrcka for her help coaching the girls this year and to all the wonderful parents for their support over the weekend. We are now looking forward to the Australian Schools Cup at the end of the year.

Congratulations to all the girls that competed!

Nepal Training Day

On the pupil-free day, Friday 5 September, while most students enjoyed a well-deserved sleep-in, those preparing for the 2025 Nepal expedition rose early to take part in an overnight training camp at Mt Barney National Park.
Both groups tackled a challenging 15km hike in search of a waterfall. Although the falls remained elusive, the spectacular weather and stunning Mt Barney backdrop made the effort more than worthwhile.
As part of their preparation, students also embraced the responsibility of planning, purchasing, and cooking all meals—not just for themselves, but also for their teachers and the World Challenge staff. Their teamwork and initiative shone through in every aspect of the experience.
Accompanying staff included Mr Kalpakidis, Ms Mitchell, Mr Glachan, and Ms Amos, all of whom were impressed by the students’ positive attitude and collaborative spirit. The camp gave staff great confidence that the upcoming expedition to Nepal will be a great success.
International Homestay

A Little Perk of My Job
One of the small but very special perks of being an International Homestay Coordinator is when I get to share a cup of tea, a plate of dumplings, or even a sweet treat with our incredible homestay families. These moments often remind me of the deeper joy I feel in this role—not just in the food we share, but in the stories, dedication, and love that sit behind it.
Wei is a beautiful example of this. For nearly two years, she has cared for and nurtured two of our senior students. With her warmth, patience, and genuine care, she has created a safe and supportive environment where they could not only grow as students, but also as young people finding their place in the world. Watching their individual growth, their confidence blossom, their resilience strengthen and become global citizens is truly why I do what I do.

The contribution our homestay families make to each student’s journey is immeasurable. They open their homes and hearts, offering guidance, stability, and encouragement during such an important stage of life. These everyday acts of kindness and dedication are the foundation of the success of our program, and the ripple effects last far beyond a student’s time here.
I am beyond grateful to families like Wei’s, and to all of our homestay providers. Together we are not just coordinating accommodation—we are building relationships, fostering growth, and creating lifetime bonds that students will carry with them wherever they go.
From dumplings and homemade cookies to milestones and memories— it’s the heart behind it all that keeps me inspired every single day.

Koala Rescue Brisbane South
Cav Rd P&C held it’s annual trivia night last Saturday with the fancy dress theme of heroes and villain. What most attendees didn’t know was that a real-life rescue was unfolding right outside!
A koala was on the school fence, startled by traffic and unsure where to go. Koala Rescue Brisbane South volunteer managed to contain him and take him to the RSPCA for checking, as he had blood on his nose and we weren’t sure whether he’d been hit by a car.
In honour of the evening, we named him “Trivia” 🐨
Thankfully the vets found just a scuff mark on his nose and he was released on Sunday into Whites Hill Reserve.

📸 Thanks to Brooke and Lisa for their images.
🚨If you need a (koala) hero, please phone (don’t text) Koala Rescue Brisbane South on 0424 807 470.
