Executive Principal’s Report

Semester 1 student results demonstrated a continuing trend predicted at the end of Term 1 where we continue to meet our “1% per annum” rate of improvement in both academic achievement and behaviour and effort ratings.
“Pass” rates (A-C) now sit at 98-99% and similarly for effort and behaviour and our upper levels of achievement are also nudging into the mid 70% range with our goal to further improve in the A band. I would hope that parents and carers who were able to make time for the end of semester parent-teacher interviews saw their child's trajectory of progress continue. Report cards allow only a 5-point scale to be recorded, however there are discriminating differences that teachers can indicate of whether a student progress has moved up within a certain band or been able to achieve at the next level. Small increments matter.
Our teaching and learning approach at Cav looks to this incremental and sustainable approach to student learning that translates in steadily improving results in the assessment measured against syllabus standards.
One of our priorities in our current school plan is the introduction and application of teaching methodology that identifies and responds to differences in individual student learning. This approach is called Multi-Tiered Systems of Support. Put simply, teachers refer to a comprehensive range of learning performance data and curate their lessons to support, address and even accelerate comprehension, understanding and skills development. This is Tier 1. Tier 2 is where specific students have their learning supported in some way to access the curriculum with clarity. Tier 3 is for those students who need differentiated support or adjustments delivered by specialist support staff and our HUB Learning Centre that students can access according to their specific leaning plan. These are not “categories” where students are “placed”, rather they are used as identifiers of learning needs and with the learning goals being that every child has “potential to reach their potential”.
Term 3 hums along and is by far the busiest time of the school year with the number and range of sporting, academic and cultural opportunities and activities being conducted across the school.
In the following pages you will find many reports of events and activities, the most notable is that this year we host and celebrate a 40-year partnership with Omiya Koryo High School in Saitama Prefecture, Japan. Cavendish Road was the first school in Queensland in 1985 to establish such a sister school relationship with the first exchange taking place in 1987. As part of the celebration we were able to connect with the Ness family, whose son Scott was one of the students who took part in the first exchange. Scott returned to Japan after university, following his passion for language and culture to teach. Sadly, Scott fell victim to the Kobe area earthquake in 1995.
It was an honour and privilege to meet the Ness family and re-sign the MOU with Omiya Koryo this week with the Japanese Consul-General attending. Quite a historical moment for both of our schools where friendship and learning of hundreds of young people has been sustained into the 5th decade. Quite an achievement.
Arts on the Green, our bi-annual Arts exposition, was simply brilliant. Praise to the talents of our young people and staff in every strand of the Arts on display, our P&C CRIMS support group and sponsorship that allowed us to take the event to a new level.
SETP Broad Year 10 is coming. Plans are required to be completed to set a compass and intentions for their “compulsory participation phase” of their schooling. Following the success of our Careers Expo held on 7 August, and working in tandem, students are being prepared for, and have already been surveyed of their thinking of senior subjects selections that best suit their SETP pathway. In due course, students will have access to further advice from Guidance Officers, Heads of Department and Senior Schooling (Pathways & Performance) Head of Department to make that transition into senior proper. The goal for every student is to complete their QCE and achieve their pathway post school, whether tertiary and optimal ATAR, vocational, trade, early entry or additional credits study. We have great track record of success, with 96% of school leavers achieving their chosen post school pathway and exceptional ATAR scores leading to tertiary entry.
Lastly, awards. The number of students receiving academic awards each year is increasing as a result of ever improving performance. Parents and carers should acquaint with the criteria for awards below. I expect a record number of high achieving Cavroadians being on stage to receive awards this year

Arts on the Green
Community Spirit Shines Bright at Arts on The Green
Rain or shine, creativity thrives — and Arts on The Green proved just that.
Despite the wet and chilly weather, our Creative Industries signature event, Arts on The Green, drew an enthusiastic crowd who came out in full support of our talented students and staff. From live music and dance performances to vibrant art displays, film viewing/media arts and interactive live performance painting, the event was a spectacular showcase of the diverse creative talents within our school community.
Families huddled under umbrellas, friends shared hot drinks, and guests wandered through displays with smiles and admiration — a true testament to the resilience and passion of both our performers and their supporters. The atmosphere was electric, not just because of the incredible creative work on show, but because of the sense of community and pride that filled the green.
A huge thank you goes to the Creative Industries staff and students, whose dedication and preparation in the months leading up to the event ensured everything ran beautifully, regardless of the weather. Their commitment to excellence and creative expression made Arts on The Green a celebration to remember.

We also thank our sponsor Zoe & Co ReMAX, CRIMS (subcommittee of the P&C), community members, families, and friends who came out in the cold to support our young creatives. Your presence made all the difference.
As we look ahead, Arts on The Green has once again affirmed that creativity is not just an event — it’s a spirit that lives in our people, and it shines brightest when we come together.
Until next time — rain, hail, or sunshine — the arts will always have a place on the green.

Navigating the Digital World
Presentations with Daniel Principe and Emma Tabacara
This week, our Year 9 students were fortunate to take part in two thought-provoking sessions delivered by Daniel Principe and Emma Tabacaru, two passionate educators and youth advocates who are working across Australia to support young people in navigating the complexities of our digital world.
Daniel, and Emma (founder of Pippin Girl), are both committed to challenging the harmful messages perpetuated through online culture, social media, advertising, and pornography. Their presentations addressed some of the most pressing issues impacting today’s teens—including body image, consent, relationships, self-worth, and how young people are being influenced by online content in ways that often go unseen by adults.
While there were certainly some uncomfortable giggles and squirming in seats, students remained engaged and respectful throughout the sessions. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with many students saying how valuable the presentations were—and asking for more opportunities to have open, honest conversations about these difficult but important topics.
Daniel and Emma’s key messages to students included:
- You are not the problem—it's the culture that surrounds you that needs to change.
- You deserve relationships built on respect, mutuality, and real connection.
- You don’t have to accept or conform to harmful gender stereotypes.
- The online world is full of unrealistic and exploitative messages—but you can learn to think critically and push back.
- Your voice matters, and you have the power to shape culture, not just consume it.
Following the student presentations, Daniel delivered a powerful and hopeful presentation for our parent community. With 400 parents and carers in attendance, the evening was a resounding success. Thank you to our P&C for supporting this important event.
Daniel spoke candidly about the digital challenges young people face—highlighting concerns around online pornography, influencer culture, hypersexualised advertising, and the pressures boys and girls experience in forming their identity. But his message was also full of hope—emphasising that when young people are supported with care, strong values, and honest conversations, they can thrive.
Parents left with practical strategies to open up dialogue with their children, including:
- Asking open-ended questions to build trust and communication
- Monitoring digital content
- Reframing conversations around values like kindness, consent, and personal responsibility
We look forward to continuing our partnership with Daniel and Emma in the future as we work together to support our young people in becoming confident, critical, and compassionate citizens in a complex world.

Term 3 Focus – Year 11 and 12 students
I would like to take the opportunity to welcome back our senior students for Term 3. This term is an extremely busy term particularly for our Year 12 students.
The Semester 1 results have now been finalised and we have commenced program changes for those Year 11 students who have not achieved success in some of their subjects in Semester 1. Year 12 students must be mindful that they are achieving a minimum of a passing grade in all subjects this semester to be eligible to receive their QCE (Queensland Certificate of Education) at the completion of Year 12.
Year 12 students who may be at risk of not achieving the required 20 credits for their QCE have been identified. They will complete a one day First Aid course on campus in Week 10 of this term. This provides an additional 2 QCE credits which some students will benefit from attaining.
All Year 12 students will be receiving their second ATAR estimate in the coming weeks. They are about to commence their QTAC applications and will need to be aware of their current estimate.
Mock exams for Year 12 students are occurring in Weeks 9 and 10 of this term. All Year 12 students have been encouraged to treat these exams as they are the ‘actual’ external exam. Teachers will be providing valuable feedback to the students on their progress and will be suggesting what strategies need to be implemented in order that they can achieve sound results in the external exams that they will sit in Term 4.
Year 11 students are strongly recommended to work consistently to achieve success in Unit 2. Students who were recommended to make subject changes as suggested by their class teachers at the end of Unit 1 and did not take up the option will have another opportunity at the end of this term. Students who have received a D result for unit 1 have an unsatisfactory result recorded for QCE. Students who have been unsuccessful in more than 1 subject are now at risk of not achieving their QCE if they do not move out of that particular subject/s. Teachers have contacted the parents of these students.
VET NEWS – Jodie Anderson (Industry Liaison Officer)
TAFE 2026
Students wishing to complete a TAFE course in 2026 should have started the application process by now. If your student intends to complete a TAFE course, they need to take the first step in the application process by talking to Mrs Anderson and the Head of Department Senior Schooling, Ms Karyn Trapp, in K16. As TAFE have already commenced taking school supported applications this term, it is important that students submit their application as soon as possible. To avoid disappointment, it is essential that students enquire at K16 to receive all necessary paperwork. Applications that are not made using the correct procedure will not be approved by the school.
Studying with TAFE usually means a day out of school to attend classes. Therefore, attendance history is an important consideration for the school.
Year 10 students need to complete the expression of interest form to enrol in TAFE and submit to Mrs Anderson in K16 as soon as possible to secure a place in the course.
Students are encouraged to look through the TAFE Handbook (a copy can be found on the wall outside of K16) or speak to one of the K16 staff members if they have any questions about TAFE – courses/advantages of studying at TAFE/associated costs etc.
Year 12 First Aid/CPR course 2025
The First Aid/CPR course the Year 12’s will participate in is on 16 or 17 September 2025. Details in relation to times, venue and other requirements will be emailed to students closer to the course date. Students have received their online learning access for the course, and are required to complete the online learning prior to the practical day. If there are any questions please email Industry Liaison Officer Jodie Anderson – jande708@eq.edu.au
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Robin Martin who acted in my position in Semester 1 whilst I was on a secondment to QCAA. She has done a wonderful job in supporting our senior students during this time.

Omiya Koryo Visits - Our 40-Year-Long Sister School Partnership
From 6 August for one week, 19 students and 2 staff members from Omiya Koryo High School, our sister school for 40 years, will visit our school. 19 students from our Japanese language program will host these Omiya Koryo students, acting as buddies during the day to introduce them to Australian high school life. The visit includes a weekend, allowing Omiya Koryo students to experience life in Australian homes. We have received word that even the shy Japanese students are looking forward to this experience.
On 7 August, a welcome ceremony for the 19 Omiya Koryo students will be held, alongside a special ceremony to commemorate the 40th anniversary of our exchange program. The event will be attended by Mr Ishikawa, the Japanese Consul in Brisbane, as well as the family of Mr Scott Ness, who was the first exchange student to stay at Omiya Koryo in 1987 following the 1986 agreement, and many host families of Cav Rd. Details of the ceremony will be shared in the next school newsletter.
The following photo captures a video chat session held between the two schools to foster connections between buddies prior to the visit. Although students from both schools were shy, this event sparked ongoing video chat exchanges between buddies, further increasing excitement for August 6.

Once again, the Cavendish Road Language Department extends its heartfelt thanks to everyone who has been supporting this sister school exchange program.

Year 11 Economics Excursion
UQ Economics Day was a genuinely eye-opening experience that deepened my interest in how economic theory shapes real-world decisions. I particularly enjoyed the interactive workshops and hearing from passionate lecturers who broke down complex concepts like market efficiency and global trade into accessible ideas. It wasn’t just about numbers — it was about understanding people, choices, and the broader impact of policy. The event also gave me insight into university life at UQ and the diverse career opportunities economics can lead to, which has helped solidify my interest in pursuing it further.

Year 7 Geography - Brisbane City Council Guest Speakers
On Week 1 of this term, the Year 7 Geography students were treated to an educational presentation by two Brisbane City Council volunteers. Nat and Amelia provided an excellent insight into the Hanlon Park - Bur’uda Project in Stones Corner. Before this construction took place, it was a century old drain, with limited shade and wildlife. Now it is a thriving environmentally conscious park for people and animals alike to enjoy. Their presentation covered the environmental, social and economic benefits of the lengthy Norman Creek Project, that the Hanlon Park upgrade was a part of. Throughout the detailed presentation, Nat and Amelia outlined the pros and cons of the project as well as the challenges of a construction of this scale.
It was truly a pleasure to have a unique chance to learn from Nat and Amelia’s experience at the Brisbane City Council and we hope to have more opportunities like this in the future. We are now going to apply what we have learned from them to come up with our own proposal to upgrade C. B. Mott Park in Holland Park for our Geography Assessment.

Year 12 – Ancient History – Guest Speaker - Tyla Cascaes
PHD candidate at the University of Queensland and former Cav Rd student, Tyla Cascaes visited Year 12 Ancient History students on 23 July. She has recently received a citation for outstanding contribution to student learning. Tyla delivered a workshop on Ancient Roman coins which was extremely insightful, especially as our Year 12s prepare for their external assessment on Julius Caesar. It’s great to catch up with former Cavroadians who are excelling in their respective fields, particularly Humanities!
Year 11 – Geography – Excursion
On Thursday 31 July, the Year 11 geography class visited Brunswick St, Fortitude Valley to assess the quality of the public space. Students gathered primary data on the ways humans use and interact with the space, assessing against the criteria of what makes a good space. Students practised conducting transects, measuring temperature, tallying people and sketching maps. It was a fun and engaging, if a bit chilly, day out.

Year 9 Economics and Business Guest Speaker – Talk Money with Ecstra Foundation
The workshop that our Economics and Business class participated in recently was a very interesting and important learning experience that effectively taught us how to protect ourselves from scams and what to do in the case of one. This workshop informed us of the online dangers that consumers face in the economic environment. The activities that we were required to participate in helped us learn how to identify a scam and the red flags that come along with it. It was a fun and fascinating learning experience that provided information and knowledge that will forever improve our understanding of scamming and help us protect the future from these fraudulent practices.

First Nations Program News
NAIDOC Week
NAIDOC Week is an important week for First Nations people as it is a time to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and is an opportunity to recognise the contributions that Indigenous Australians make to our country and our society.

The 2025 NAIDOC theme is ‘The Next Generation: Strength, Vision and Legacy’. This theme celebrates the achievements of the past, and the bright future ahead, empowered by the strength of our young leaders, the vision of our communities, and the legacy of our ancestors.
In the spirit of celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture during NAIDOC Week, we invited Waveney Yasso, First Nations composer and artist, to or NAIDOC assembly on 14 July to perform an original Acknowledgement of Country. Waveney is a proud Yuwi Burra & South Sea Island descendant and is dedicated to preserving language, songlines & history through art.
Thank you to School Elder, Aunty Pat Williams for attending the NAIDOC assembly, and also to students Eloise, Amelia, Qutarn, Charlie, Hugo and Ge’rdakee for participating.
First Nations Leaders Parliament Tour
First Nations Student Leaders – Mya, Amelia, Eloise and Kendall – were invited by local MP Joe Kelly, Member for Greenslopes, to undertake a tailored tour of Parliament on 24 July.
We were greeted at Parliament by Mr Kelly, who co-delivered the tour with Peter Yagmoor, Queensland Parliament’s First Nations Liaison Officer. Students were taken throughout the Old House and into the Legislative Assembly and Chamber, the ‘Halls of Power’, the Premier’s and Speaker’s Halls and the Members Reading Room. The tour focussed on the contribution First Nations members, communities and individuals have made to the Queensland Parliament.

Our sincere thanks to Mr Kelly for inviting our First Nations Leaders to attend. We left with a greater appreciation for the responsibilities of parliamentarians, and look forward to attending again next year!
Kym Ford - First Nations Liaison Officer
Head of Student Services – Year 11 & 12

Term 3 is now in full swing, and our senior students are meeting the moment with focus, maturity, and momentum. Whether students are building momentum in Year 11 or navigating the final stretch of Year 12, this is a crucial and rewarding time in their high school journey. Throughout this year, I’ve spoken with both cohorts about the importance of leaning on their “team”, their teachers, family, peers, and support staff, who are all here to walk beside them, guide them, and help them stay on track. No student should have to do this alone, and knowing when to ask for help is a strength, not a weakness. We’re proud of the way our students are showing up, taking ownership of their learning, embracing leadership opportunities, and supporting each other along the way.
Book Week – Celebrating Adventure (Week 6)
We’re looking forward to celebrating Book Week in Week 6, with this year’s theme: “Reading is an Adventure!” Students and staff are encouraged to get involved in a range of activities celebrating storytelling, imagination, and the power of literature to take us on journeys beyond the classroom. A full schedule of Book Week activities will be released soon, so keep an eye out for opportunities to dress up, join in, and celebrate the joy of reading together.
Year 11 Dinner Dance – Festival of Lights at The Gabba
The Year 11 Dinner Dance will be held in the "Legends" Function Room at The Gabba, with this year’s theme, Festival of Lights, creating a vibrant and elegant atmosphere for one of the most anticipated events on the Year 11 calendar. The evening will feature music, dancing, food, and plenty of photo opportunities, and is a well-earned celebration which recognises the efforts and achievements of our Year 11 students throughout the year so far. A group of student leaders has played a key role in planning the event to ensure it reflects the unique energy, personality, and spirit of their cohort.
Year 12 Formal – A Night to Remember
Preparations are well underway for the Year 12 Formal, which will take place on Thursday 18 September at Rivershed, located in Howard Smith Wharves. With its beautiful riverside location and city backdrop, this iconic venue is the perfect place to celebrate the journey and accomplishments of our senior class. Our student-led committee continues to work behind the scenes to ensure the night is meaningful, inclusive, and unforgettable.
Please note: Attendance at the Formal is subject to students meeting the school’s eligibility requirements, including acceptable levels of engagement, behaviour, attendance, and the payment of outstanding fees. Students who are currently ineligible will be contacted this week and will have the opportunity to meet expectations ahead of the event.
Father’s Day Breakfast – Celebrating Our Senior Dads
We’re excited to announce that our Father’s Day Breakfast will be held on Friday 5September, led by our Senior Student Leaders. This special event is designed for Year 12 students and their families, offering a chance to pause, connect, and celebrate the important role that fathers and father-figures play in our students' lives. More details will be shared with families in the coming weeks.
Pi Day Celebration – Fun with Numbers and Cubes!
Last week, our Senior Student Leaders hosted a fantastic Pi Day celebration in the courtyard during lunch. Students took on the challenge of guessing Pi to as many decimal places (10 and 20!) as possible and competed in Rubik’s cube solving races. It was a fun and quirky way to engage students and build positive connections through student-led activities.
Visuall Photography – Capturing the Moments
We’re excited to have Visuall Photography onboard as our official photographers for both the Year 11 Dinner Dance and Year 12 Formal. From red carpet arrivals to dancefloor highlights, every moment will be captured by Michelle and her talented team. Families can explore their work or make bookings at www.visuall.com.au or contact Michelle directly on 0421 932 262.
Exams and Academic Planning – Weeks 9 and 10
The end of term brings important academic milestones for both year levels:
- Year 11 Block Exams will take place in Weeks 9 and 10
- Year 12 Mock Exams will also be held during Weeks 9 and 10
These exams provide students with the opportunity to consolidate their learning, practise time management under exam conditions, and receive valuable feedback ahead of their final assessments.
QTAC Applications and Pathway Planning
QTAC applications officially open on Monday 5 August. All Year 12 students are strongly encouraged to begin exploring their preferences and options early. Throughout the term, students will also complete a one-on-one pathway interview with a Guidance Officer to support their transition beyond school. These interviews are being prepared for during YLC lessons and provide a supportive space to talk through university, TAFE, apprenticeship, or employment pathways. If your student needs help, our dedicated Pathways & Performance Team, led by Mrs Karyn Trapp in K16, is ready to support every step of the way.
Safer Schoolies Presentation
Our Year 12 cohort also attended a Safer Schoolies presentation in Week 4. This informative and practical session helps students understand how to stay safe, make informed choices, and protect their wellbeing as they prepare for life after school and the upcoming Schoolies period.

Arts on the Green was held on Friday 1 August with CRIMS running the canteen and raffle, and sponsoring performances by the Brisbane Regional Youth Orchestra (BRYO) Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Music Institute (JMI). This was an incredible team effort and I would particularly like to thank our positive and enthusiastic working group who made this event such a pleasure to be associated with: Amanda Frampton, Hayley Berry Grant, Heather Edwards, Janet McKay, Kathy Mitmannsbruber, Meenu Radhakrishnan, Sonia Beattie and Tony Lashmar. Thank you also to our canteen volunteers, raffle book sellers, and delicious goods from home bakers. Someone remarked the canteen felt like a well-oiled machine.
