Career Education at Cav
Over the past few decades, the world of work has dramatically changed and today's students will transition through multiple jobs and careers throughout their lifetime. Cavendish Road State High School's Career Education Programs equip students with the skills to become lifelong learners in order to successfully negotiate their career pathways.
At Cavendish Road State High School we offer comprehensive Career Education Programs to students in all grades. We understand that explicitly taught career education provides students with greater opportunities for future success. Students in Years 7 through to 9 engage in understanding the changing world of work and developing individual interests and aspirations to inform their subject selections. Year 10 students work explicitly on their Senior Education and Training Program (SET P) for senior subject selection, while senior students embrace the opportunity to review their current plans for post year 12 options.
At Cavendish Road, we know that parents play an important role in helping students to make informed career choices and decisions. Parents are vital in guiding young people's career development through guiding their journey and fostering their enthusiasm, optimism and curiosity.
Our guidance officers, Ms Kate Niland and Mr Paul Ross co-ordinate these programs and are very willing to assist students and parents in navigating this exciting journey in young people's lives.
Opportunities for Senior Students
Special thanks to the Senior Schooling Team for their work supporting our students with Mighty Minds, QCS Practice and Numeracy immersion opportunities to ensure our students successfully complete Year 12.
Cav Partners with Suncorp Metway and Financial Basics Foundation
Our recent partnership with these two high profile organisations will ensure our students will receive high quality financial education throughout Years 7-12. Our Business students recently had the great privilege of meeting the CEO of Suncorp Metway to hear about his career and financial advice in this very unstable, current economic market.
Recent and Upcoming Excursions
Our students are fortunate to experience the following as part of their learnings:
- Philosothon and Digital Technology ICAS Competition
- Year 9 South Brisbane Science and Engineering Challenge
- Toohey Forest Excursion
- Year 7 Academic Excellence Program Archaeology Excursion and dig
Code of Conduct
All students should be aware of the Code of Conduct when using public transport to and from school. The following link provides details of this policy

Cav Road Welcomes New Business Services Manager
My name is Radmila Vlaski (better known as Rad) and as of 3/05/16 I am Cavendish Road State High School's new Business Services Manager. I come to you after twenty nine years with the Australian Taxation Office and Administrative/BSM roles at Wynnum Central State School, Darling Point Special School, Balmoral State High School and Wynnum State High School.
I am passionate about children's education and am here to assist the Principal, Associate Principal, Deputy Principals, Heads of Department and teachers in providing opportunities to all students to acquire knowledge and understanding in all aspects of their education. It is also important that we efficiently manage the delivery of services that support the educational management activities of the school i.e. all non-teaching staff, school finances, facilities and assets. I must say that I am looking forward to getting to know students, parents and caregivers. Additionally, I would like to take the opportunity to advise parents and caregivers that I am available to discuss financial arrangements with regards to outstanding school fees and to say I am but just a phone call/email away.

Year 12 Tourism Movie World Excursion
On the 9th May, the Year 12 Tourism class attended an excursion to Movie World. The excursion enabled the students to demonstrate their tourism skills at a 'real world' key tourism destination. At the venue, the students completed a familiarisation exercise where they conducted research and collected data for a key tourist target market. This information will be collated and used for an assessment task which involves developing and presenting a hypothetical market briefing to Queensland Tourism. Movie World is an exceptional example of a key tourism venue that caters for a variety of target markets ranging from domestic tourists with young children to mature aged international tourists. With so much to see and so many rides to try, collecting market data was no easy task. All in all, however, it was a thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining learning experience.

Science and Engineering Challenge Day
The Year 9 Science academy class took part in the Science and Engineering Challenge Day on Tuesday 17th of May. The students worked in small teams to complete a number of challenging engineering design and construction tasks. The students had a great day and came third overall. The students were perfect ambassadors of Cavendish Road High School.

Healthy Eating Project 2016
Currently, the Year 12 Health Education class is researching and developing a strategy to address a perceived need associated with diet within the Cavendish Rd SHS community. "Parents play a significant role in influencing their child's eating habits; children are likely to adapt to the same eating habit as their parents" (EUFIC, 2015). So it is vital that parents set a good example in regards to healthy eating but also physical activity. To assist our class with developing a strategy that meets the needs of the School Community, we were wondering if you could take the time to complete a short response survey at:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/27NZYL2
The survey will assist us in understanding your current knowledge, attitudes and beliefs on healthy eating and physical activity. In the next newsletter we will provide readers with strategies to support heathy eating for their family and children in particular.

Rule of Law Institute Australia Workshop
Our Year 11 and 12 Legal Studies students were recently offered the opportunity to attend two workshops run by Jackie Charles from the Rule of Law Institute. Jackie presented Year 11 students with insightful information on mandatory sentencing and the independence of the judiciary. This information will provide a good foundation for their study of criminal law this term. The Year 12 students attended a workshop on legal research skills. They learnt important research skills that can be transferred to their upcoming independent study in term three.
Year 11 Legal Studies Supreme Court Visit
The Year 11 Legal Studies students visited the District and Supreme Court Complex on 28 April. We were very privileged to be invited to a talk by Justice Horneman-Wren. He presented information on the court system, offences and sentencing. Students were able to ask Justice Horneman-Wren questions relating to their jury system assignment.
Students were then able to view cases and experience firsthand the operation of the Queensland Courts. Arson, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, possession of drugs, grievous bodily harm and armed robbery were some of the offences available to view. Students watched the presentation of evidence, calling and questioning of witnesses and sentencing. Being able to visit the courts brings to life the theory studied in class.
Year 10 Market Day
Market Day will be bigger than ever this year! The Year 10 Business Management students will be running two market events on Monday 30 May and Friday 3 June. Market stalls will be set up on A Parade at first break. Students across all year levels will have the opportunity to purchase mouth-watering homemade goodies made by our Year 10 Business Management students. We can't wait to see all the hard work our students have been putting into their business venture this term. Don't forget to bring your spare change!

German News
In Week 4, all our Year 7s held their first presentation entirely in German and impressed with creative PowerPoints. This is no mean feat as the whole presentation was not only delivered in German but off learnt by heart as well. Gut gemacht! Well done!
On Thursday, 5th May, almost 40 German students in Years 9-12 headed to the Black Forest Restaurant in Highgate Hill for a traditional, authentic German lunch. This coincided nicely with the food unit that our Year 9s are currently studying. The students were greeted and served by Ulrich, who in the end complimented the group for being one of the few schools that could understand his German introduction and impressed him with excellent behaviour, sehr gut! We enjoyed incredibly generous portions of Goulasch, Würste (sausages), Sauerkraut, Ratatouille and Hähnchen (chicken) followed by homemade Apfelstrudel. Here are some photos of our decadent lunch:

Drama News
What a busy month was April! With two in-class workshops and a Shakespeare performance for year 9-12 students, it has been all work and lots of play. Currently students are working towards finishing classroom content and moving into assessment preparation. I wish them luck with this assessment period.
Year 10 Cyber Drama Class Workshops
Students are currently working on their last unit of study for Year 10 drama. Their recent workshop run by the Australian Acting Academy was based on a process drama where one of their classmates had gone missing on camp. Students worked in groups and linked the story with the use of a cyber link created earlier. For first time players the students did a great job and the drama was really successful. This was an interactive drama with teacher and workshop leader also in role, participating in the drama. Students are now well under way with their assessment process drama and I look forward to viewing their video outcomes.
Year 12 Absurd Drama
The Australian Acting Academy also worked with senior drama students on their current assessment preparation 'Absurd' theatre which is a challenging genre for most students. This workshop focused on conventions of drama specifically relating to the genre and helped students understand the specific needs of this dramatic art form. With great concentration and effort, students watched and participated in several activities to reinforce their knowledge, challenge their ideals and demonstrate Absurdist theatre techniques.
In-school Performance
We at CAV RD are celebrating the legacy of William Shakespeare 400 years on, with a live performance by the Australian Playhouse Theatre titled SHAKESPEARE "AS YOU WRITE IT". This was a highly engaging, fast paced, improvisational theatre created and driven by the students. What an amazing live drama experience. The actors were incredibly talented, accepted offers from the students and created the most incredible versions of Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth. The three actors controlled a very witty, clever and fast paced performance that had students laughing, crying and screaming for more! This was truly an outstanding production and I hope it has inspired many of our younger students in Years 9- and 10 to embrace the stories Shakespeare wrote, for they are unique tales of woe.
Drama Club
Drama Club is well under way for term 2 with students working on ACTING FOR TV & and COMMERCIALS in front of a Green Screen! Students should have collected their booklet and be learning their scripts to ensure they are film ready. I look forward to viewing these green screen sessions during the Jazz on the Lawn afternoon in July. If you are interested in joining Drama Club please collect a permission letter from P Block classroom and I am happy to discuss the program with you. Likewise, parents feel free to contact me via my email tryan122@eq.edu.au for any further information.

Artists as Problem Solvers
A requirement of the "Certificate II in Visual Art" is an assessment brief that requires community links that provide students with 'real world' experience. Recently Mrs Brunckhorst's Year 11/12 Certificate Class collaborated with a local primary school to achieve this. Our brief was to help a Year five class create a Mother's Day gift that was creative, able to be made in a regular classroom with parent helpers and deliver it on budget.
The students brainstormed a number of concepts before deciding on producing a printed tile. A template was created and the Year 5 students were asked to draw a floral image for their mum. These designs were then compiled into stunning designs by the Cav Rd art students. From these designs the class created a number of Riso print screens; this way the younger students could easily transfer their images onto a ready-made tile. The tiles were printed in their own classroom, collected, glazed and fired. The quality of the finished product was a direct result of the design work of our art students. Our students received very positive accolades from parents who received these as Mother's Day gifts.
