THE PRINCIPAL'S REPORT
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome to term 3 which has begun with gusto!
The Kokoda Challenge
Congratulations to our teachers and students for their mighty effort in the Kokoda Challenge last weekend. A sincere thank you to our many parents involved in the support crews. Without your invaluable support, our students and teachers would not have experienced such success in this gruelling event through the Gold Coast hinterland.
The Year 11 Camp
Year 11 students and teachers last week braved the freezing temperatures, strong winds and rain at the Maroon Outdoor Education Centre, but regardless of the weather conditions, all reported a most successful experience.
Back in the warmth of the school, a valuable non-camp program was provided which will enable students to achieve credits towards their QCE.
Creative Generation
A big thank you to all teachers and parents who were involved in ensuring the success of our 16 talented students who last weekend participated in Creative Generation - State Schools Onstage.
Bill Turner Cup Football
Congratulations and good luck to all students involved in the Bill Turner Trophy and Cup who recently won their respective area finals and will contest the Queensland finals on 2 and 3 August.
Adopt a Cop
Constable Phil Wenban from the Holland Park Police Station will be joining our team as the school's Adopt a Cop and Police Liaison Officer for our students and families. Constable Phil will attend events, assemblies and meetings at our request. He is passionate about working with young people and enthusiastic to be involved in school events. Whilst Constable Phil will not be attending Cav on any designated day, he will 'drop in' to the school when not rostered on duty and is our 'go to person' for police support.
Attendance Update
Thank you to everyone for a great team effort to ensure our attendance was on target and students maximised their opportunities for learning. The variance column reveals the results of our efforts!

2016 Early School Leavers Survey
The Queensland Government is conducting its annual state-wide survey of students who left school in Years 10, 11 and prior to completing Year 12 during 2015. The Early School Leavers survey is a short, confidential survey that collects information about what young people are doing the year after leaving school. The information from the survey helps our schools to understand the pathways young people follow after leaving school and to plan services to support transitions into study or employment for our students.
Between July and August 2016, our students who left school in Years 10, 11 and prior to completing Year 12 last year, can expect to receive an invitation to complete a web-based survey or a telephone call from the Queensland Government Statistician's Office to complete the survey. Please encourage early school leavers to take part. For more information, visit the link below or telephone toll free on 1800 068 587.

Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Visual Art
The Creative Generation Excellence in Awards recognise and promote excellence in senior visual art education throughout Queensland State and non-state schools. Since 1990, the program has helped raise community awareness of the degree of sophistication in concepts, diversity of technical competence, and the high standard of visual art education in Queensland secondary schools. This award is open to senior art students whose work is of a VHA standard. The program comprise of a digital submission, a regional exhibition showcasing the submitted works and if selected an exhibition of the works at the Gallery of Modern Art.
As we are a part of the Metropolitan region our showcase exhibition will be held at the Brisbane Institute of Art (BIA) in Windsor during the first week-end in September. Congratulations to Iliyana M, Madoka K and James F who have been selected to represent Cav Road the regional showcase.

Year 11 Leadership Camp
During the first week back this term, 151 brave and excited Year 11s set off on the annual Cav Road Year 11 Leadership Camp to the Maroon Dam Outdoor Education Centre, located at the very picturesque Maroon Dam. The students were divided into seven different groups to undertake programs specially designed to accommodate for the specific challenge level desired by each student. The focus of the camp was on leadership, resilience and teamwork. The aim of the camp was twofold. Firstly it enabled the students to challenge themselves and demonstrate their capabilities as a potential leader at Cav Road for 2017. In addition, it was also designed as an opportunity for students to step out of the classroom to meet and engage with students they would not normally interact with at school.
Whist at the camp, the students participated in a wide range of activities. These included camp outs at remote locations such as Mount Maroon, daily hikes, and terrifying activities such as the 'leap of faith' and 'the giant swing'. It was fantastic to see so many students step outside their comfort zone and give everything a go. It was also wonderful to see the students gather together as a team to motivate and support each other through the activities.
At Maroon Dam, Cav Road has a long standing reputation of developing students who really stand out to the staff. This year's cohort was definitely no exception. Every camp teacher provided overwhelmingly positive feedback regarding the way in which the students conducted themselves at the camp. I would like to congratulate and commend each and every student for their exemplary behaviour and conduct. It was an absolute pleasure spending the week with these students.
A heartfelt thank you must go to the staff who selflessly gave up their time and gave 100 percent to ensure that each and every student had the best camp experience possible – Mrs Karfs, Mr Kelly, Ms Nicolls, Ms Coutts, Mr Fulton, Mr Gillingwater, Mr Lambie and Mr Mollee. Without these teachers, such valuable learning opportunities for our students would not be possible. A special mention must go to Ms Gardiner who endlessly and tirelessly goes above and beyond to care for the health and wellbeing of our students. Overall, it was a fantastic week that was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone involved!

Kokoda Challenge 2016
The Kokoda Challenge was held on the weekend of 16-17 July in the Gold Coast Hinterland. This year, Cavendish Road had 50 students and 13 leaders take part in the event. Of our school's 63 participants, 61 completed the challenge they had set themselves, whilst 2 people pushed themselves to their limit until injury or illness forced them to retire from the race. Both Isabel Estay-Banks and Joshua Scanlan from Year 11 competed in the Kokoda Challenge with the Kokoda Youth Foundation (Kokoda kids). They completed the 96km course in over 39 hours and did not finish until 9.45pm on Sunday night. That is a super human effort to be walking for so long.
The school's participation would not be possible without the dedication of our leaders, teachers and parents. As always, for any successful event, there is a huge effort that takes place behind the scenes, from the efforts of the school's administrative staff through to the team support crews who keep everything going while the teams are out on the track. We appreciate these contributions and thank you all for your commitment to our students. We very much appreciate the ongoing support of the school P&C to help with the funding of the shirts.
The Kokoda Challenge is recognised as the toughest endurance course in the country because of the Gold Coast's demanding terrain and steep and never-ending mountains. It is hard to describe the demands that this challenge places upon individuals and teams, but it is certainly a challenge that changes lives for ever.
This year, students and teachers wore yellow ribbons to show support for Doug Henderson, the founder of the Kokoda Youth Foundation who is seriously ill and has his own major challenges at the moment.
As always, the students and teachers from the mighty "Cav Rd" were perfect ambassadors for the school and were an excellent example of the values of the challenge- courage, endurance, mateship, sacrifice.

QUT STEM Camp Success
Congratulations to Yuxin (Christine) Duan and Sergio Garcia Joya, of year 11, who have been accepted into the QUT Vice-Chancellor's STEM camp running in the September holidays. Invitations into the camp are highly competitive and only the highest-achieving students make it into this select group. Yuxin and Sergio will have the opportunity to participate in five days of research, problem solving and orientation to university life, as well as learning from some of Brisbane's best scientists. We look forward to hearing about their research and experiences!

Head of Department Science
Congratulations to Shuichi
Shuichi Matsuda in Year 12 is a Japanese student who is studying here for Year 11 and 12. In April he entered into a very prestigious art competition in Japan – Dengeki Illust Taishu. There were approximately 5,000 entries in the competition. The art submitted needed to be totally new and not seen previously. Shuichi finished his exams at the end of Term 1 and sat and drew the required 5 pieces of art. He submitted them on the closing date of 10 April.
Shuichi won second place and a special award for under 20 year olds. He will be receiving his prize at the Awards Ceremony held in Japan between 10 October and 15 November. He cannot show us a photo of his work until after these dates.
Here is a photo of one piece of his work that is hanging in B21 - the International Office.

Academy of Science - Year 8, 9, 10 Subject Selections
At this time of year, many of our year 8, 9 and 10 students are starting to consider their subject choices for the next year, and I often receive questions about what the Academy of Science is, and how students gain access to it. The Academy of Science currently begins in grade 9 and concludes in grade 12. The table below summarises the key aspects of what is offered at each of these year levels. Year 8 students currently in the Academic Excellence Program (AEP) are not automatically accepted into the Academy of Science class, but must meet the same criteria outlined below.
2017 Year level |
Key features of the course |
9 |
The Academy of Science class completes the same course as the rest of the Year 9 cohort, however, they will accelerate their learning to fit into three terms. Fourth term is then given over to an extended experimental investigation. Criteria: Student results from Year 8 will be reviewed during term 4 and students who are achieving at the top of the cohort in science, and who have high effort and behaviour grades, will be given a letter of invitation to take part in the Year 9 class the following year. If the student decides that they do not wish to take part in the Academy of Science, their place will be offered to someone else. |
10 |
The Academy of Science class completes a senior biology preparation course in semester 1. In semester 2 they commence Year 11 Biology. Students will also go to a two day TRI excursion (biochemistry laboratory). Criteria: As Year 9 into 10 subject selections happen during term 3, student results from semester 1 of Year 9 and term 4 of Year 8 (a biology unit) will be reviewed, and students who are at the top of the cohort in science, and who have high effort and behaviour grades, will be given a letter of invitation to take part in the Year 10 class the following year. Some students will opt not to accept the invitation as they may not be interested in pursuing Biology. In this case, their place will be offered to someone else. |
11 |
Across the course of the year, students in the Academy of Science will complete the remainder of their Year 11 studies whilst concurrently studying Griffith University "Biological Systems" course. Criteria: Only available to students who were in the Year 10 Academy of Science class. As part of our agreement with Griffith University, students must maintain a 'B' minimum to remain in the Academy of Science class. |
12 |
The Academy of Science class returns to the same Year 12 Biology course that the rest of the cohort is doing. Criteria: Only available to students who were in the Year 11 Academy of Science class. |
As is shown above, the Academy class has a clear Biology focus from Year 10-12, while in Year 9 it has a general science focus. The main benefits of being involved in the Academy of Science are:
- The opportunity to complete the Griffith University Biological Systems course, gaining guaranteed entry to relevant Griffith University courses (i.e. many science-based courses), contributing bonus ranks to tertiary entrance rankings, and, for those who do go on to study a relevant course at Griffith University, a one-subject credit towards the completion of the degree.
- Being a part of a class of like-minded, high-achieving, highly motivated science students. This allows class discussions and learning experiences to take place at a higher level, where students can spur one another on.
- Interactions with professional scientists through guest speakers, university contacts and the camp.
Our partnership with Griffith University is also of benefit to students who are not part of the Academy of Science. Our Year 10, 11 and 12 chemistry students have had several excursions to Griffith University Chemistry Laboratories, undertaking a number of experiments, with Year 12 students synthesising Aspirin.
If you have any enquiries about the Academy of Science or about our other science programs, please contact Mr Michael Denner, Head of Department (Science) on 3394 0756 or mdenn37@eq.edu.au.

Year 9 and 10 Movie Event
During the last week of Semester 1, the Year 9 and 10 students celebrated those students who had achieved 95% or greater. Those students who achieved our school target of 95% or above were invited to an opening night screening of Independence Day Resurgence at the Garden City Events Cinema. It was an exciting event that those students who had put the hard work during the first semester of the year could relax and enjoy this extra-curricular event.

G'Day USA 2018
Want to visit America and stay with an American family? On 29 December 2015, 9 Cav Rd students and Miss Masselos left Brisbane for 4 days in Los Angeles. We stayed at the hotel connected to Knott's Berry Farm and also visited Disneyland, Universal Studios and San Diego. We moved on then to Seattle, where we stayed for 10 days with host families. Skiing, sightseeing and attending school classes together with shopping, shopping and more shopping were just some of the activities we did.
New Year's Eve was spent at Disneyland watching the fireworks, seeing the shows and lining up for the rides.
After Seattle we visited San Francisco and saw the sights there including a cruise around the harbour and walking over the Golden Gate Bridge.
The group arrived home in Brisbane on 20 January 2016. It was 20 days of new and interesting events.
If you would like to come on 2017/2018 trip then come to the information evening at Cavendish Road SHS on Wednesday 24 August in the Resource Centre at 7 pm. If you like any additional information then contact Maria Masselos on mmass2@eq.edu.au or 3394 0709.

National Book Week
This year, Cav Rd will be celebrating National Book Week with a variety of activities and events to inspire students and staff and foster their love of reading. Book Week occurs in week 7 this year, from August 22-26. The theme is 'Australia: Story Country'.
Events on offer this year will include a variety of competitions (such as a Spelling Bee), a bookmark design competition, novel knowledge quizzes in Peer Support and teacher costume competition. It also ties in with the Premier's Reading Challenge which started in May for our year 7-9 students who are challenged to read 15 books by the August end date.
We at Cav love to read and learn, but understand that not all students who want to be here at school every day can be. Students across the state, as well as a few of our own on occasion, have found themselves unwell and admitted to hospital. Being the philanthropic bunch we are at Cav, we have decided to help give kids what they crave most – the ability to just be a kid!
We are looking for donations of toys, books, handicrafts, puzzles, board games, DVDs, electronic games, comics, and other fun stuff to help bring some smiles to the children in hospital.
We will set up a donation point at K block staffroom and the resource centre, but students can also deliver these items to their Peer Support teacher in week 6 or 7.
Below are some donation suggestions and some guidelines (as health and hygiene will be an important factor in a hospital!
Great gifts for babies include:
- (easy to clean) rattles, cot mobiles and plastic books.
Kids in hospital really enjoy being occupied with fun things to do:
- board games, puzzles, colouring in, scrapbooking, t-shirt designs, making jewellery and toy models – a welcome distraction from the hospital stuff!
And don't forget there are big kids in hospital too and they love:
- music, books, comics, movies and video games (please check the ratings first, PG rating is as high as we can go).
But it's not always toys that can bring the biggest smiles – sometimes it's simple things like new clothes that can make the most difference, especially when a family has come to hospital in a hurry:
- shirts, shorts, skirts, underwear, socks, shoes, hats – these are a real help to many mums and dads.
Guidelines:
- Please do not wrap your gifts. If you'd like, you can donate toys in a gift bag – or include some wrapping paper and we'll wrap the toys for you. We need to see all gifts before they're given out to the kids to help us know where they will be most loved.
- All games, comics, books, DVDs, etc need to be in new or good condition. Whilst heavily pre-loved items are appreciated, if they aren't in new (or near-new/good) condition they might be more useful being donated to a second hand or charity store. Maintaining good health standards for the children is crucial to their stay in hospital.
- All toys (including craft packs, pens, colouring pencils, crayons, etc.) must be new. Many little patients have trouble fighting infections so only giving them new toys significantly reduces the chance of any bugs getting in; hospital rules.
- Toys must be free of sharp edges or points that could cause injury. Toys for very young children and toddlers need to be free of buttons, pins or other small objects that little fingers could pry off.
- We are not able to give out foodstuffs.
- We are not able to give the kids any political, controversial, religious or offensive items; nor can we give out toy guns or weapons.
- Occasionally we distribute donated gifts to children in regional hospitals, accommodation facilities nearby the children's hospital, and community health centres throughout Queensland. Please let us know if you do not wish your gift to be sent to any of these locations.
More information about Book Week events for 2016 will appear in student notices this term. Keep an ear out!

Football: Bill Turner Shootout
First week back from the holidays and the Bill Turner girls travelled down to Palm Beach to face off in a rather intense match against our academy rivals Palm Beach Currumbin. Our girls created many opportunities, mainly coming from out wide. A lovely corner set piece from Sarah Moreland and Taylah Roncato nearly put us in front early in the first half as well as Lily Steel, making a tremendous save as the ball was shot from a distance. The girls defended immensely for the entire game, stopping the PBC forwards from breaking through down the sidelines and smothering the through balls in the middle of the quaint sized field. This lead to the game entering into 'golden goal' extra time, in which the rules were a drop off, meaning two players had to drop off the field every 2 minutes until it was 5 v 5. It was at this stage the crowds gained in size and nerves were on edge as Anna Margraf's shot was on target in the dying minutes only to be denied by the Palm Beach keeper. Penalties were then called and soon after their 5 shots we were in sudden death. Huddled around at the halfway mark, anticipating the win as the opposition needed to get their 7th penalty to stay in the game. Fortunately for us it nicked the crossbar and went over the top resulting in the girls progressing through to the state finals! A courageous effort, well done girls!

In Touch
Welcome Mr Chris Loth
It is with great pleasure that we welcome Mr Chris Loth to the Cavendish Road Touch Football Program. Mr Loth brings with him a wealth of experience and knowledge, and I know that the boys program will blossom under his tutorage. Some of Chris's current involvement in touch football include:
- Open Men's Southern Storm Premier Coach
- South Queensland Sharks Men's T-League Coach (current National Champions)
- Queensland Schoolboys Manager
- Queensland Men's 30s Coach
- Australian 19 Boys Assistant Coach
Chris has also played Open Men's with the South QLD Sharks, and represented both QLD and Australia at an Over 30s level. Chris and I will be working closely together to strengthen our Academy, we are both very excited about the future.
Schools Touch Cup
A new initiative has been launched by Touch Football Australia (TFA) to celebrate excellence in schools through Touch Football. Teams that have successfully competed at their respective states 'All Schools' competitions are being invited to attend this national competition.
This competition is a national version for all finalists and TFA advises that invitations have been extended to include two teams from each eligible school. Specifically, our Boys' Year 10 team qualified so Cavendish Roads schools' Girls' Year 10 team is now eligible to compete. The competition will run in conjunction with the National Youth Championship (NYC) and Alliance Cup held at Sunshine Coast Stadium, Kawana Waters, from 16-18 September, 2016 (last week of Term 3).
Chris and I are working very hard to make this a great experience for our students. Please expect a letter home shortly which outlines possible options and solutions which will require your feedback.
Junior State Cup
Junior state cup was held during the last weekend of the school holidays at Hervey Bay. Over 60 students from Cav Rd participated in this carnival. I had the pleasure of watching nearly all of these students competing and noticed how such a carnival strengthens every individual immensely. The importance of playing representative touch not only improves skills and game knowledge but develops friendships and more importantly confidence. Congratulations to Luke McLeod (ex- Cavroadian) and Tahlia Zischke for headlining the Fraser Coast Chronicle during the carnival.
I also spent some time watching the Mustangs (Brisbane) 14 year old boys play under the guidance of two very experienced coaches. One of the coaches specifically mentioned Jude Saldanna. He said he was chosen as a winger at trials, but through commitment at training and a willingness to learn and play as a team member, Jude was moved to a strike link spot, a very coveted position in touch. Finance Department
Is your student/s in Year 11 or 12? Did you receive a statement by email for your student/s? The Finance team will be communicating with you on a monthly basis with a statement for your review. If you didn't receive a statement for your student/s in Years 11 and/or 12, please contact the Finance team to update your details and ensure that future correspondence is emailed to you.
As part of the ongoing process in improving our communication with you, parents/carers from Years 7 to 10 at Cavendish Road State High School will shortly be receiving student statements on a monthly basis. Please keep an eye out for these in your Inbox.
Have you received an 'Adjustment Note' recently? Occasionally the Finance team are required to make account adjustments e.g. cancellation of an excursion; a student/s non-attendance to an event where invoices have been raised and payment is not required. These adjustments are cancellations and not credits and therefore cannot be used to pay out other invoices on a student's account. If you need any further information, please email finance@eq.edu.au. Did you know that details for the Student Resource Scheme as well as Student Resource Scheme Forms are on the Cavendish Road Website? Go to www.cavroadshs.eq.edu.au, click on the Support and Resources tab, then Student Resource Scheme tab for further information. If you have questions regarding the Student Resource Scheme information, please email finance@cavroadshs.eq.edu.au.

New Free Learner Driver App
The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) has recently released an app which allows learner drivers to record their driving hours using a smartphone or tablet device.
The Queensland Learner Logbook app is the first of its kind, enabling learners to electronically submit their completed hours directly to TMR for processing. This instant submission not only saves learners time and money mailing their completed logbook to TMR for processing, but it also means that TMR will be able to start checking submitted logbooks sooner.
Learners can use the app to:
- view their progress against set target hours
- enter information for past journeys
- use the timer to record new trips
- save multiple vehicle and supervisor details
- seek approval for trips from their supervisor by email
Those who have already recorded some trips in a paper logbook can still use the app by creating new entries to transfer their past trips across, or by submitting both logbooks for processing.
Download the app for free today from the App Store or Google Play for Android.
