THE PRINCIPAL'S REPORT
Dear Parents and Carers,
We're more than half way through the Term – well done everyone! Special thanks to many staff for their efforts this Term.
Arts on The Green
The Arts and Hospitality staff and CRIMS hosted a wonderful "Arts on the Green" event recently. Our parents were overwhelmingly positive, suggesting it was the best school event that many had ever attended. Their reason for this was namely that it was an opportunity for parents to interact and connect informally. Well done to all involved.
Kokoda 2016
Congratulations to all staff and students who participated in Kokoda this year. Special thanks to our staff and parents for giving up their weekend for our students, for the hours spent training and for enduring the muscle soreness after the event!
Trial Senior External Exam in English
Congratulations to the Senior English staff and students who received great results for our very first External English Exam, we achieved a B- Mean for Cav whilst the State Mean was a C-. Well done to these staff for having the courage to take a risk and lead our system! Great work!
Track and Field Carnival
We enjoyed a fantastic Track Carnival earlier in the Term. Special thanks to the HPE staff for their efforts with the Track and Field Carnival and events.

Melbourne University High School Visits Cav.
Our close colleagues from Melbourne University High School visited for two days to work with our teachers of Philosophy and students. This was a great opportunity for our teachers and leaders to share programs and teachings with Melbourne University High staff who are also leading the teaching of Philosophy in Victoria.
Junten Super Science School and Thai TV Visit
Junten Super Science School students and staff visited again this year from Japan to experience our Science Academy offerings. Further, a Thai Television Station visited to create an advertisement commissioned by Education Queensland International. These experiences are another great example of Cav Road embracing globalisation and international opportunities for our students.
Cav. Students to Explore International University Pathways
Whilst I was overseas I developed some partnerships that will see Cav offer an Academic Excellence Excursion to the USA in September 2017 which will involve approximately 50 of our most academic students from Years 8, 9 and 10 (2017). These students will travel to Columbia University, New York University, Google Company, Wall St, Brown University, Harvard University, Yale University and MIT in Boston. Students will also have the opportunity to apply for undergraduate scholarships with all of these Universities. We will be the first secondary school in the country (private or public) to offer such an opportunity to students. I hope that this excursion will occur every second year. Exciting times!
Parent Teacher Interviews
Thank you to all families who attended the Parent Teacher Interviews recently. It is wonderful to have your support and commitment as we all work together to ensure an outstanding education for our students.
Staff Change
Congratulations to Mr Andrew Read who will take up his new position as A/Deputy Principal at Aviation High School. Mr Mitch Baker will act as Director of Student Achievement (Years 9 and 10) until the end of the school year. Mitch has demonstrated exceptional leadership of our sporting programs since starting at Cav and I know he will do a great job leading our Year 9 and 10 students in their academic pursuits.
SOS Return
Thank you to all members of our school community who returned the School Opinion Surveys, I appreciate your feedback and interest in contributing to our future foci at Cav.

Our ASOT Focus for This Week
What do I typically do to help students examine similarities and differences?
- Select Items that allow for extended comparisons
- Ask students to revise their comparisons and classifications after discussing them with peers.
- Model how to create and use comparisons, classifications, similes, metaphors and analogies.

Science Week 2016 Celebrations - "Drones, Droids and Robots" (13-21 August)
Drones, droids and robots come in many shapes and sizes and their uses, current and future, are extremely exciting.
Drones are now being used to deliver parcels, medical supplies to remote areas, explore inaccessible landscapes, accurately count animal numbers and track feral animals. Robots also come in many different shapes sizes and have a wide variety of uses such as vacuuming the floor to helping search for survivors of earthquakes.
Visit from Professor Jo – Griffith University
On Tuesday 16th August, the Year 7 classes attended a guest lecture by Professor Jun Jo from Griffith University. His areas of expertise are robotics and Artificial Intelligence. Professor Jo explained to the students why we use robots (for dirty, dull and dangerous work) and gave many real life examples of where robots are currently being used. He also outlined some of the possible uses for robots in the future – perhaps one day your autonomous car will drop you at work and then pick you up again at the end of the day to drive you home too!
Professor Jo also brought along a drone to demonstrate how it can be controlled by facial recognition software. See the demonstration in the video below.
Year 9 Robotics Activity
The Year 9 science classes have been celebrating science week by learning to program a robot to navigate its way through an orchard to "pick the fruit" from the trees. The students have thoroughly enjoyed this interactive activity – not too many trees were harmed in each lesson! A big thank you to Mr Newton for helping us use these robots.
Clair and Hannah from Year 9.
Look out for the Year 8 Rube-Goldberg machine creations in the next newsletter.

Year 11 Dance and Personal Development Program
Tuesday 9th August was a very big day for our Year 11s! Normal classes were cancelled for the day to allow the students to participate in the Cavendish Road Personal Development Program (PDP). This was followed by the Year 11 Dance in the evening which was held at the Greek Club.
The PDP program enables the students to engage in activities that aim at developing their academic, personal and inter-personal skills. The first session of the day was facilitated by Elevate Education where the students participated in the very valuable 'Study Sensei' workshop. The workshop centres on giving the students skills to develop effective study habits and note taking methods. The workshop was well received by the students with the feedback from 97% of the students indicating that it was a valuable learning experience! The second session focused on team building activities. The final session for the day was facilitated by RACQ who provided the students with information on how to gain their learner licence and safe driving practices. This was concluded by a talk from Police Officer Constable Phil Wenban who spoke to the students about drugs and alcohol. At the end of the PDP day, the students were very excited to be dismissed in order to prepare for the Year 11 Dance.
The Year 11 Dance was held at the Greek Club. It was so wonderful to see the students so elegantly dressed and many were unrecognisable out of the Cav Road uniform! A big congratulations must go to all the students who attended as they behaved in an exemplary manner. A special mention must also go to Sergio Garcia Joya, Asen Liu and the Year 11 Student Councillors who prepared a short video to showcase some of their favourite Year 11 memories. Overall, it was a fantastic day followed by a great night that will be sure to have created lasting memories for our Year 11 Students.

QCS Preparation
Tips to deal with exam stress ahead of QCS test
In just two weeks, our Year 12 students will sit the Queensland Core Skills test. It can be an incredibly stressful time for many students, but we must remember that good stress is helpful to assist young people to feel more alert, increase their concentration, provide more energy when needed and it enhances their sensory experience. It is when they experience alertness that is overstimulating and adversely affecting how they interact and perform at school where stress can become harmful to their health and wellbeing.
There are simple steps students could take to control stress:
- Take the time to get organised for the exam period
- Look after yourselves, rest, and reduce distractions
- Be prepared to ask for help
- It is important to get the balance of study and other activities right
- Work out what times of the day you have the most energy and study then
- Don't study more than 40-60 minutes without a short break
Parents can help reduce stress levels at home by encouraging students to set aside time to study, help get the balance right and plan rewards for after exams. For more tips on dealing with stress visit headspace.org.au/get-info/school-stress-and-exam-survival.
Breakfast will be offered to students on both mornings of the QCS test (30th and 31st August) from 7.30am.

Junten High School Visit
Junten High School, from Japan, have a global interest. They are a science-focussed school, whose goal it is to prepare their students for careers in science in a global capacity. This is the second year that they have spent two weeks with the science faculty here at Cavendish Rd SHS. Their main goal is for their students to engage in Science in English.
The program involved integration into a number of our senior science classes, where they participated in class discussions. They also spent three days at the Translational Research Institute (TRI) doing advanced biochemistry, and three days at Griffith University doing chemistry programs. The highlight of their trip, however, was the collaboration with the science 'buddies', mainly from our Year 9 Academy of Science class, who accompanied the Junten students on a field trip to the rocky shore and Wallum heathland of Hastings Point. The students collaborated in groups comprised of two Cavendish Rd SHS students and two Junten students, to produce a short documentary video of an organism from one of these ecosystems. The results were outstanding! Our students enjoyed working with the Japanese students, and the level of interaction between them all was great to see.
A very big thank you to Mr Griffiths who took on a large part of the organisation and hosting of the visitors, and to Ms Masselos and Mrs Huxley for doing much or the logistics and administrative work. PS- If you see Ethan Titmus, ask to see footage of the octopus trying to eat his GoPro!!!

Year 11 BCT Dreamworld Excursion
On Thursday 11th of August, the two year 11 Business Communication and Technologies classes attended an excursion at Australia's largest theme park, Dreamworld. This excursion was an essential element for our current assessment task. We are required to use our knowledge of workplace health and safety legislation to identify and analyse hazards at Dreamworld.
We received a short presentation by Jacqueline Wood, the Education Officer for the theme park. She thoroughly discussed the historic background behind the establishment of Dreamworld, training requirements, emergency procedures, sustainability measures and the importance of workplace health and safety procedures in an organisation like Dreamworld. Everyone found the presentation very informative and a great help to our assignment.
When investigating hazards we were surprised how easy it was to find potential hazards. After capturing a few photos we finished the day with a few rides before heading home. Overall, it was a very educational and exciting day.

Forty Hour Famine
Students at Cavendish Road show what they stand for to help fight global hunger
A team of 50 passionate young students from our school are showing the world what they stand for and taking part in this year's 40 Hour Famine to help some of the almost half a billion people who are currently facing food shortages or starvation across three continents. TEAM CAV RD hopes to raise at least $8000 this year for the 40 Hour Famine and welcomes support from the community.
Started by World Vision in 1975, the 40 Hour Famine is one of Australia's biggest youth events. This year, it is expected that tens of thousands of young people from all over the country will participate to make their stand against global hunger. From the 19th to the 21st August, participants will give up something important to them for 40 hours to raise awareness and much-needed funds to help fight global hunger. Whilst food remains the most popular choice, many students are choosing to give up technology, furniture, talking, sight or even the use of a limb.
You can donate to TEAM CAV RD online by visiting the website below. It's quick and easy, and you'll be sent a receipt by email within a few days. $20 can help one family increase the amount of food they produce for a month, and $50 can help train a farmer how to process crops into food products. Thank you for your support and for helping to fight global hunger!

Drama News
August is a BIG month for your student in Drama! We have our Live Theatre Production "Great Shakes" by Shake and Stir performance for all Drama students across Year 7-12. Shake and Stir are an outstanding theatre company providing curriculum based core content learning through innovative and creative stage performances. Year 11 and 12 students also have assessment based in school workshops with outstanding leaders in the Arts. Zen Zen Zo Physical Theatre Company are well-renowned for physical theatre stage presence and will work with our Year 11 students to prepare them for assessment. Year 12 students are currently preparing their Open Works unit which will be performed on Monday November 1st to a public audience. Shake and Stir theatre are coming to complete an Ensemble and Stage skills workshop with the students to prepare them for their live theatre debut. We are also seeing Endgame at QPAC Cremorne Theatre to immerse our senior students into the world of Absurd Theatre.
A big thank you to parents for signing all excursion permission slips and students for submitting these on time to the finance window. This is a new system, if we work together we will all be able to enjoy the wonderful events occurring with the Drama department.
Endgame at QPAC
Year 12 students completed a study of Absurdist Theatre during term 2 so viewing this form of theatre live on stage is a rare and priceless opportunity. We welcomed Year 11 students who also attended in preparation for their senior studies next year. This was a wonderful production and extremely insightful into the world of existential philosophical thinking and the world that is Samuel Beckett.
Great Shakes Performance by Shake and Stir
On Thursday 11th August all drama students from Year 7-12 viewed this live theatre production for assessment purposes. This was an outstanding look at three Year 10 students studying Shakespeare and trying to make meaning of it all. Sounds very familiar to me and certainly resonated with the students. The three lead characters were encouraged to change the location and context of the plays [2 tragedies, 2 comedies and 2 historical] to create greater relevance and meaning for today's generation. This was creative, engaging and so very clever. I have never thought of viewing "A Midsummer Night's Dream" as if I was playing on a gaming console. This certainly captured the students and created a very 2016 approach to our birthday boy William Shakespeare.
Year 11 Drama Students in-class ZEN ZEN ZO Workshop
Students in Year 11 are studying Greek Theatre and the opportunity to work with a Professional Theatre company to explore physical theatre and movement techniques is an incredibly enriching experience. Students learnt viewpoints and studied movement opportunities embedded within the text. This was a very active workshop and I look forward to viewing student assessment and seeing the techniques used within their group performances.

State Regional Championships
Cavendish Road recently featured Lawson's outstanding achievements at the State Championships in June. Lawson has now competed in the State Regional Championships held in July and proudly wore his medal to school to show his very proud Peer Support class. Congratulations Lawson on achieving;
1st place – Kata [choreography]
1st place – Kumate [fighting]
This is an outstanding result at a State Regional level. Look out Japan 2020 this young man is a future Olympic star!
Well done Lawson!
Guten Tag!
We are half way through term 3 already and our Year 12s are facing 4 exams that will test each of their skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening. So far they have been achieving incredible outcomes and we are confident they will continue to do well.
Both Harrison and Stephanie managed to secure scholarships in order to attend the one week program offered by the Institute of Modern Languages (IML) at UQ during their winter holidays. It is fantastic seeing our students take opportunities to improve their abilities.
Steph - I have been to the IML program twice now. The first time we did a lot of grammar and I began to understand the accusative and dative cases, as well as other grammar elements which was helpful at a Year 10 level. This time we also did a lot of grammar but we went into more depth, looking at prepositions and adjective endings which was so helpful at a Year 12 level. The teacher made it fun with jokes and interactive whiteboard work. This forced me to not be shy which was amazing. I learnt a lot and am so grateful- thankyou IML.
Harrison – I had a great time attending the IML program, it exceeded my expectations and I made new friends along the way. I feel my language skills have improved noticeably and the experience has made me more confident in my abilities. Everyone there was welcoming and friendly which made the whole experience even better. The teacher was really cool. He was very knowledgeable and was able to help me with areas I struggled in. I would highly recommend this program to anyone considering to give it a try, it was heaps of fun and I learnt so much.
On a sadder note, we were unable to obtain enough interest for a German trip in April, 2017. If you were interested, please consider the excellent exchange programs that Education Queensland International (9 weeks) and SAGSE (6 weeks) offer. We will continue to look into other options and will keep you up to date with any further proposals. Lastly, some of our classes are currently benefiting from an Austrian language assistant, Victoria Ameringer. She is currently in Australia awaiting the beginning of her masters in neuro- and psycholinguistics and is coming alongside our students to assist in any way she can – a wonderful opportunity.

What's happening in your Resource Centre?
Term 3 in the Resource Centre
The Cavendish Road SHS Resource Centre is the place to be this term!
On a regular day, the Resource Centre is a fully air-conditioned learning space which comfortably accommodates up to 160 students at a time. We have several functional spaces that support and enhance learning - three multi-media classroom spaces and two open plan learning spaces. The place is always buzzing!
In addition to hosting classes in the Resource Centre, this term the facility has been used to host a number of extra-curricular activities including:
- An art exhibition as part of Arts on the Green,
- The Mighty Minds workshops for Year 12s prepping for QCS,
- After school English tutoring,
- The Academic Excellence Program's (AEP) iSTEM program,
- Life Group,
- Subject Selection Evenings for various year levels,
- Science Week displays and robotics classes with the Year 9 Science classes

New to Our Collection – an offering of what's new
Our Resource Centre is brimming with resources to help students with their studies, research and free reading. We aim to assist students to be successful in their pursuit of knowledge and enjoyment of literature by creating a dynamic collection of current, appropriate and high interest books.
Some of our most recent acquisitions include resources to support the curriculum and also material of general interest. Here's a sample:

Returns and Overdue Notices
The loans system of the Resource Centre aims to provide all users with maximum access to our resources. All student loans are for a maximum period of three weeks (21 days) with the right to renew if the resource is not in high demand. Students are encouraged to borrow books over school holiday periods.
Overdue notices will be sent out regularly to students' EQ email addresses to remind students of overdue books. This will ensure a high turnover of resources and equity of access.
Notices are sent to student email addresses as follows:
- Overdue notices are emailed to students when items are 7 days or more overdue
- A replacement cost notice is sent at 28 days overdue to students and parents
- After 30 days, overdue items are considered lost, and an invoice will be sent to the student's parents/carer.
All lost and damaged items will be charged at a replacement cost. A full refund will be issued if the item is found and returned in good condition.

Fashion Fridays
In 2017, Cavendish Road SHS will be offering a new senior subject called 'Fashion'. It is a SAS (Subject Area Syllabus). In order to promote this subject we have been running activities during term 2 and 3. These 'Fashion Fridays' activities are based on the semester units in the Fashion SAS and have been held at lunchtime on a number of Fridays.
Adornment
Students created their own accessory… a muslin scarf that was tie dyed.
Collections
Students were given the challenge of designing a collection of three garments with a theme. Basic model silhouettes were provided for students to sketch and draw on. Designs are now due and will be judged by the Head of Department and a prize given for the most creative themed collection.
Merchandising
With the theme, 'Brighter than Gold', students were asked to use their flair for fashion and 'dress the mannequin' by draping and arranging fabrics, lace, ribbon and other trims on the mannequin.
Sustainable clothing
Over two weeks, beginning 19th August, students will re-fashion or 'up-cycle' an old t-shirt. Students will have two techniques demonstrated. For students who are interested in Fashion, these are great opportunities to see if this is the subject for you. Students are encouraged to come along, have fun and use their fashion flair.

Football Academy
Over the last couple of weeks the Football Academy has done some great work in not only achieving fantastic student outcomes but also building on our school's outstanding reputation in the local and broader community.
Firstly I would like to thank Dale Zimmerlie for his efforts in organising and running the Met East Primary school finals here at Cav Road on Friday the 29th of July. The benefits of hosting these matches brings a great opportunity for primary schools students and their parents in our metro east area to see and experience our great school. Dale organises this each year and does a fantastic job. We always get tremendous feedback from parents and teachers of the participating schools on how well run the day is. Well done Dale.
We are once again Queensland champions in the girls U15 Bill Turner Trophy and 2nd in the state for the U15 boys Bill Turner Cup.
Both our girls and boys reached the state grand final of the Bill Turner Competitions (The Trophy & The Cup). Both teams played fantastic football over the two days of competition and while the boys dominated their grand final they could not find the back of the net to convert their dominance and unfortunately went down 1-0 nil in their final to finish 2nd in Queensland and 8th in the nation. Our girls on the other hand went back to back and defended their QLD title to win through to nationals in a gritty performance to win 1-0 in their final. They will now travel to Newcastle on the 5th to the 8th of September to challenge for the national title. Both sets of students conducted themselves with integrity and grace both in winning and losing and displayed the 5 C's of Cav Road with pride. All of our teachers were very proud of the students' behaviour, effort and character displayed.

Schools Touch League
The third and final round of STL's proved to be a great success. All players have made great headways in improving personal performance and teams can now establish areas in need of improvement. Congratulations to the boys' Year 10 team who went through all 3 carnivals undefeated. They were the highest ranking team in the 10 years boys division and came away with The Championship title. The 13 year boys tied for fourth position, the 13 girls tied for fifth and the 15 year girls came third. I was particularly impressed with the improvement that the 13 year girls have made. Their strength in the roll ball, which is effective in rucking is exceptional. They are starting to look up and really take opportunities that present to them on the run. I look forward to coaching these girls in preparation for All Schools. I believe they have a great chance!
Schools Touch Cup
Thank you to all families who have returned permission slips for Schools Cup. If you have not received one, this letter is an expression of interest for students in grade 9 and 10 who are eligible to play in the Schools Touch Cup to be held at Kawana Waters from 16-18 September. If you have not received a letter please make contact with us. We have received information from TFA that the following schools from around Australia will be competing. In the boys divisions we will be competing against, Narara Valley, Narabeen SHS, Palmerston Senior College, St Edwards College, St Johns Catholic College Darwin, St Josephs Port Macquarie, and Wellington SHS. While the girl's will play against a more heavily dominated QLD contingent in Benows SHS, Brisbane SHS, Lourdes Hill SHS, Mt ST Benedict College, Narabeen SHS, Palm Beach Currumbin High, Tomaree High, Tuggerah Lakes.
As we get closer to the competition more information will be made available to all families involved. We would also like to request assistance from parents to help during the carnival as Mr Chris Loth and I are also involved with the QLD teams. If you think you are that special person please contact Chris Loth or myself. We also need to supply 4 referees for the tournament. If you have background in refereeing touch and can spare a few hours of your time during the carnival to referee, the students, Mr Loth and I would be most appreciative. Final selection for teams will take place over the next few weeks during class and after school training sessions.
15 Years State Championships
Congratulations to Renae Nona, Kedan Chan Tung and Kapu Broughton-Winterburn who represented Met East at the 15 year state championships which were held at South Port on 28-31 July. Both boys and girls teams made Grand finals and were narrowly defeated. The boy's final ended up in drop off. A drop off occurs when a game is drawn at full time. From here 5 players start and every 2 minutes a player leaves the field, until 3 players are left. Both teams can sub and they keep playing until a team scores. The Met East boys team ended up in a 3 way drop off for almost 6 minutes, however they conceded a try and were defeated. During this carnival, State teams are selected. Kapu Broughton-Winterburn has been selected to represent his state and will travel to Perth for the National Championships held later this year, congratulation Kapu, a truly fabulous result.

Good luck to Billie Manns and Rafe Priestley who are representing Met East at the 12 year state championships to be held at Roma on 18 -21 July.

The Boys' Group
The Boys' Group continues to run again this term with phase two of the V.I.T.A.L. ProJex No Limits Program. I believe this is having a positive impact on the boys in such a way that other people are beginning to see a change in the boys' attitudes and behaviours. I thoroughly enjoy facilitating this group and I am proud of the boys for their efforts. I am also very thankful to Mr Ross for helping us.
Life-Group
Life-Group also continues to meet each Monday. These students always bring me such joy as I witness their growth in Christian maturity. They continue to be a strength and an encouragement to each other, while sharing their hopes and fears, joys and sadness's, struggles and successes in life. They are wonderful young people.

Every day counts at school
The Department of Education and Training has developed a range of free resources to promote the importance of going to school, every day. Research shows that school attendance leads to positive student outcomes, and can help children to build social and emotional skills.
The new Every day counts resources, developed with the input of Solid Pathways students, includes an animation, comic book, posters, as well as tips to help encourage students go to school every day.
