THE PRINCIPAL'S REPORT

Dear Parents and Carers,

Thank you for a great Term 3 everyone! Special thanks to all staff and students for their hard work this Term.

I begin the update this week with an example of a student demonstrating one of our 5C's, namely Consideration.

"I'm just writing to let you know how impressed I was this afternoon by some Cav Rd kids who gave up their seats on a crowded bus. None of us who sat down fit the criteria on the sticker of elderly, pregnant or with a disability, and in fact one lady laughed and said "don't do that, it makes me feel old". But I wanted to write and commend these students for doing the right thing and doing it so cheerfully.

We're so glad we chose Cav Rd for our son, he has settled in really well with a lovely group of friends. He goes to school happy and comes home happy and we are very thankful. Our commendations to you and your staff team!"

I applaud this young person for being a fine example of a Cav Rd student.

Staff Venture to Learn from Sydney Schools

Mr Kosanovic, Ms McFadzean, Ms Spruce and Mr Fulton ventured to Sydney recently to investigate the work of our high performing colleague schools who use a Problem Based Learning Framework – we look forward to hearing about their learnings as a whole school staff.

Interschool Sport

Special thanks to Ms Bairstow and all of the coaches of interschool sporting teams and congratulations to those teams who are South District Champions and Metro Finalists! Please see the Sports section of this newsletter for all results.

40 Hour Famine

Special thanks to Mrs Coutts, Ms Van Genderen and the team of staff who supported students electing to participate in the 40 Hour Famine. Congratulations to students who raised a total of $6380.57 by giving up something that matters to them for 40 hours, raising awareness and funds to help fight global hunger. I thank these students for their leadership in this worthwhile cause.

UQ Create Change Senior Leaders Forum

Special thanks to Mrs Coutts who took Rodney, Ethan, Aneesha, Oliana to UQ to hear Madeline Price (founder of the One Woman Project), and Lucas Patchett & Nic Marchesi (founders of Orange Sky Laundry) (photo attached). They reported an inspirational evening and that as we know, there are some incredible people in this world.

Special thanks to all the staff involved in Science Week - the theme was "Drones, Droids and Robots". The feedback from the teachers and students was overwhelmingly positive.

Year 8 and Year 11 Leadership Application Process

Thanks to the staff who led these processes last week and congratulations to all students who have applied for leadership positions for 2017. I have been very impressed by our students' written applications, interviews and speeches. I look forward to introducing our leaders to the school community at Awards Night next month.

Music Gala Evening

Special thanks to Tony and all The Arts staff for your great work at the Gala Evening. Another wonderful night of student performance!

Plans for Traffic Reduction

I have initiated plans with Councillor Krista Adams to put traffic reduction strategies in place around our school. As our enrolment continues to increase significantly each year it places pressure on inbound city traffic in the mornings. These strategies may include reducing the traffic on Cavendish Road inbound in the mornings by widening Elgar St to include a pick up/drop off zone for parents and widening Holland Road to include the same. Further we may be trialling no turn right rules from Elgar St onto Cavendish Road and from Cavendish Road into Elgar St between 7.30-9am. Council has funding in place to support this project, at this stage there will be no resumption of DET land. Once Council has draft plans drawn up Councillor Adams and I will consult widely with our community.

Further, $500 000 Federal Government Black Spot Funds have been allocated for the upgrade of the intersection of Holland and Cavendish Roads this financial year. Both projects will present significant disruption to traffic flow – I will keep you updated.

QCS 2016

Congratulations to all Year 12 students who sat the QCS Test last week. It was a significant two days for our staff and students. I am very impressed by our students' tenacity and maturity during the two days. Our students have great teachers who have prepared them well! I am looking forward to receiving students' results in the future.

OptiMinds

Thank you Dr Bowles, Ms Kurylewska and Ms Atkinson for supporting our seven teams of students who participated in the South East Region OptiMinds competition recently. Our students achieved some exceptional results.

R U OK? Day

Thank you to Mr Reynolds and all of the student leaders for their great organisation of R U OK? Day. The day was full of fun activities, it was wonderful to see so many students involved.

Brisbane Kokoda Challenge

Mr Enders and Mr Griffiths recently completed the Brisbane Kokoda Challenge with a number of students. Congratulations Team Cav!

Bill Turner Cup

Our U15 Football girls contested the National Bill Turner Cup event in Newcastle this week. The girls lost the semi-final 2-1 in extra time and went on to win their next game ensuring they are ranked three in Australia. Well done to all girls!

Have a great spring holiday everyone and thank you for your ongoing support during Term 3!

On Saturday 27th August, Cav Rd had 7 teams participate in the annual Opti-Minds Challenge held at Marsden SHS. This year we had one social science team, three language literature teams and three science engineering teams take part. All teams had to compete in a long-term challenge in their chosen category for which they had six weeks to plan, create and perform their final challenge idea. Not only did they compete in their chosen long-term challenge category, but also in a spontaneous challenge where each team had 10 minutes to plan and solve a challenge that was presented to them on the day. All teams did Cav Rd proud, especially the senior language literature and science engineering teams who won their category and will progress to the Opti-Minds state final in October.

QCS (Queensland Core Skills) and PSOP (Post School Options Program)

QCS 2016 is finally done and dusted and what a fabulous effort the year 12 cohort put in! 146 students completed the 4 tests over two days, challenging their skills across multiple choice, short response and extended writing pieces.

We kicked off each day with a nutritious breakfast organised by Ms Leech and served by Ms Coutts and some of our Year 11 students. We also enjoyed some music in the Year 12 precinct to help us unwind and shake away the nerves, courtesy of Ella and Oli. Special thanks must go to all involved in supporting our students through some very tough days of testing. It was also great to see the focus and positive attitude towards the tests after all of our hard work this year. Well done Year 12s.

Meanwhile our Post-School options students also pushed themselves over these two days to complete more of their Certificate II in Work place practices. This too is a big deal as it is a culmination of a year's worth of work to gain a nationally recognised certificate displaying a students' ability to conduct themselves well in a work place. On top of this, a further 26 students used this time to gain a White Card qualification. This group of students have shown an outstanding commitment to proving their work readiness and securing further employability qualifications for life after school. Well done team!

Maths Teams Challenge

On the 29 July, Cav Road students from all year levels participated in the Maths Teams Challenge at Stretton State College. Every year our students bring together their amazing mathematical abilities, great teamwork skills and competitive natures to make the most of this fun competition. This year was no different. All teams were out to impress. After bringing home the first place trophy in 2015, the senior teams were in the spotlight. Congratulations to Ethan Bulmer, Lily Meagher, Rachel Tilley, Sebastiaan van Oeveren and Luke Wilson for bringing that trophy straight back to Cav in 2016. Having tied for first place after the morning session, our junior team was keen to get into the Relay challenge. Narrowly missing out on a medal, has only sparked their enthusiasm to get back there next year and try again. Congratulations to all teams, you have made the Cav Rd Maths department very proud!

Brisbane Kokoda Challenge

On the 4th of September, Cavendish Road had two teams participate in the 30km Brisbane Kokoda Challenge. It was a beautiful spring day and the course was hot, hilly and dusty. The students had to dig deep to get to the finish line and were very proud to receive their medal at the finish. Mr Enders and Mr Griffiths for led the teams.

Career Education at Cav

You will be well aware that our students have been working on Career programs. While these programs have finished, they have certainly informed subject choices for 2017. Each Year level's Subject Selection booklet will provide a wealth of information. All students have received these. These resources along with Subject Selection evenings enable students and families alike, to make well informed decisions about their learning program.

Another exciting feature on our careers calendar is the Careers Expo we have on campus. All major universities were present along with, QLD Police Service, Australian Defence Force and Brisbane City Council. Axiom College, Service Skills Australia and JMC came too to share their offerings to our students. Students in Years 10 to 12 were able to chat to staff from these institutions, receive printed matter and hear about life in education after Cav Road.

Catherine from Axiom chats
about certs that are on offer.
These can be completed
during school or after year 12.

Australian Defence Force, Griffith
University and TAFE set up for
the Cavendish Road State High
School Career Expo.

It was great to see how our students engaged in all programs and as a result asked some clever questions. This indicated they were thinking about their post Year 12 choices and what they needed to do to get there.

Our Year 12s have all had an interview with one of the Guidance Officers. For our Year 12s this was helpful in terms of refining choices, thinking about alternate pathways or navigating the QTAC application process. For some students it confirmed their pathway, for others they became more focused on making a decision and for others it enabled them to access information that has put them in the right direction.

The Queensland Tertiary Admission Centre (QTAC) is responsible for the administration of all universities, some private institutions and TAFE in Queensland and Northern NSW. All Year 12 students were issued with a QTAC book which provides everything students and families need to know about the process. The book, coupled with their interview ensures all students have the knowledge they need for 2017.

In the event you have been on campus, you may have noticed the screen in the hallway of Student Services. On the screen we have been rolling through a raft of information about careers, subject choices and more recently tips on exam preparation. The Guidance Officers welcome students to the area to view the presentations.

In closing please be reminded Guidance Officers are very willing to chat to students, parents and carers. Please phone the school to organise an appointment. Wishing all our students a safe and happy holiday. See you in term 4!

Scholarship for Diploma of Hospitality

Last term Cavendish Road ran a Certificate II in Hospitality through Queensford College here at the school facility. The course was highly successful. Queensford College offered a Scholarship for a Diploma in Hospitality to one of our students.

The following quote is from the College spokesperson:

"I have also spoken with our trainer to decide on which student from the 2016 Hospitality intake should receive the full scholarship into the Diploma of Hospitality. It wasn't an easy decision as we had to take into account the following elements from each student:

  1. Best attendance
  2. Best attitude
  3. Best effort"

And the winner is Lilli Schilg. Congratulations Lilli. Lilli said she is going to take up the Scholarship next year while at University.

Mission Australia Employment and Aboriginal Employment Services

Mission Australia Employment and Aboriginal Employment Services visited Cavendish Road last week to discuss employment opportunities including school based traineeships and apprenticeships with our Indigenous students. Both employment agencies gave the students valuable information about gaining a job while at school.

Brisbane City Council

The Brisbane City Council have now advertised for next year's intake of Apprentices. The apprenticeship areas are in Building, Automotive and Horticulture and they offer excellent on-the-job training. Read more on the attached flyer and how to apply for these positions directly through the council.

MRAEL

MRAEL Australian Apprenticeship Support Network have advertised School-based Traineeships/Apprenticeships and also, full-time Apprenticeships. These positions are based throughout Queensland and you can apply directly through MRAEL. Please refer to the attached flyers.

TAFE

TAFE have a Spring Program for all students in the school holidays, with hands-on workshops focused on specific industry and study areas, where students in Years 10, 11 and 12 can discover firsthand the ins and outs of a potential study pathway. Have a look at the poster to see if there is something that would interest your student. If they would like to try one of these, they can then register their name with us in room B10 at school, with Mrs Vicki Schafer.

SCIPS (School Community Industry Partnership Service) will be conducting the annual 'School Leaver Event' on Wednesday, 19 October, 2016.

This event gives students and parents the opportunity to speak with local employers and industry experts, to enquire about training courses to lead to employment, and engage with employers for apprenticeships and traineeships. Many different industries and career opportunities will be at this night for you.

Further details are in the attached event flyer and if you would like to attend, please complete the attached registration form and forward to SCIPS.

Congratulations to Senior Art Student

Congratulations to Senior Art student Sharaya Summer, who was on radio station 612 ABC recently, talking about her art. Radio station 612 ABC ran a signal box design competition for the chance to paint a signal box located outside their building. Sharaya was one of two runners up out of a finalist list of three. We have an amazing amount of talent in the arts at our school and it is very pleasing to be able to share their work with the wider community.

Braille Literacy Challenge

On the 9th of September, two students from Cavendish Road State High competed in the QLD Braille Literacy Challenge hosted by Braille House in Annerley. Competitors from across Queensland, even as west as Dalby, came to participate in both the reading and writing 'braille offs' where students were marked on their fluency, accuracy, and attention to detail in both their reading and writing of braille. Needless to say our Cavroadian Fabian Jones blew away the competition as he won 1st prize in both the reading and writing challenges for 2016.

Clement Bub, who has recently started transitioning to braille also impressed Braille House volunteers with his fluency and articulation in the early category of the braille literacy challenge. All competition aside, it was fantastic opportunity to socialise with our fellow braille readers and writer across Queensland and a chance to celebrate the joy, wonder and skill of reading in the tactile medium.

Bill Turner Trophy Third in the Nation

After our Bill Turner Trophy girls were crowned Queensland Champions, they were off to Newcastle to compete at the national stage. Cav Road drew Hunter Sports High in the semi-final. The girls were clearly the better footballing side and dominated both possession and chances. Unfortunately the girls went down 2-1, but could find solace in the fact that they out performed their opponent. However, they just couldn't find the winning goal, with Hunter Sports High's goal keeper making some great saves (She is the Australia U16 Goal Keeper). Hunters winning goal in golden goal extra time was clearly off-side marring the game in controversy. Football can be a cruel game and losing to a poor decision from the referees is always hard to take. However, the girls carried themselves with pride and took it on the chin.

The next day saw the girls take on St Marys' Star of the Sea in the playoff for third. The girls again put on a dominant display, some would say a footballing clinic, with the opponent stretched and hanging on. If it was not for St Marys' Star of the Sea's goalkeeper Hayley Reeves, the game would have ended up as a cricket score in favour of the Cav Road girls. The girls slick, positive possession based passing game finally started paying divided-ends with a neat passing movement, giving Anna Margraf an opportunity to spank a shot into the top corner for the first goal in the 47th minute. Yet another beautifully constructed move saw Taylah Roncato slotting the ball into the bottom corner five minutes later. It could have been a 3rd goal for the Cav girls if it was not for another controversial off side decision denying Taylah a brace. The final score was 2-0 to the Cavendish Road girls. The tournament was topped off nicely for our girls with Anna Margraf deservedly awarded as the player of the tournament.

A massive congratulations to all of the players, Miss Amos and Ms Andreatta. The girls represented the school with grace, dignity and integrity and were magnificent in their work ethic, attitudes and performances.

Boys and Girls Club touch has kicked off at Whites Hill and through our partnership with the Storm we are able to offer coaching opportunities for students in our academy. Ken Willett who runs the Junior Program has rung me to personally thank our fabulous students for their time, knowledge and dedication to making this program a success. Boys Group

No Limits Boys Group is continuing to happen weekly. We have worked on certain 'personal values' during past few weeks, such as forgiveness, patience, and acceptance. The problem solver activities and discussions have challenged each of us, particularly with these personal values. Each student targeted certain things that they wish to improve about themselves and we have been deliberately working on those things. Kathleen Gallichan has been helping to run this program the past few weeks. Her great ideas and enthusiasm is appreciated. Thank you Kathleen.

Life Group

Life Group also continues to meet weekly. Frank Mudole, a former Cav Rd student and the founder of this group, visited us recently. He was a wonderful encouragement to the group and everyone enjoyed his words of wisdom. The group have invited him back as a monthly visiting speaker.

Breakfast Club

Breakfast Club is run by the lovely volunteers from Hillsong Youth Services each Friday morning. They cook and serve delicious BBQ pancakes to approximately 300 students each week.

It has been a very good term. I would like to extend my appreciation to all those who support school chaplaincy through prayer, through service or through their generous financial support. Without you, school chaplaincy could not happen. Thank you very much.

Free advice and support for Queensland parents

Not every parent may need support, but it is ok to ask for help. Since the Triple P Parenting program started last year, more than 20,000 Queensland families have received free parenting advice and a helping hand. The Triple P Parenting program provides tips on managing kids' behaviour, balancing work and family and the best ways of raising happy, confident children.

Research shows that children raised in a calm, consistent and positive home environment are more likely to succeed at school, have better jobs, experience more positive relationships and enjoy better mental and physical health. Parents who do Triple P are also more likely to have lower levels of depression, anxiety and stress, so there are plenty of good reasons for parents to learn more about the benefits of positively parenting their children.

The range of support includes an online program, topic-specific seminars, parent discussion groups and one-on-one consultations as well as more intensive, small group-based and individual programs.

For more information about the Triple P programs or to find a session near you, visit the Triple P website. Immediate Triple P help is available by phoning Parent line on 1300 30 1300 (from 8 am to 10 pm) for the cost of a local call.
