THE PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
“Cavendish Road State High School - A School of Academic, Pedagogical
and Sporting Excellence”
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome to 2017
Happy New Year to all of our families. The start of the 2017 school year has been very busy for our students and staff. Our Day 8 enrolments are 1692 students, including a record number of Year 7 students (368). It is encouraging to witness our school as still one of Brisbane’s most desirable catchments. As I discussed with staff during the Student Free Day Conference, with the great privilege of teaching in one of our system’s best schools comes significant responsibility. I know that our staff are ready to accept this challenge and will be sure to deliver for our community.
Special thanks to the staff who spent some of their break travelling with our students internationally –
- Mr Smith and Mr Zimmerlie – Europe on the Football Tour
- Ms Nicholls and Mrs Karfs – Visiting our Sister School in Japan
- Mr Thompson, Ms Gardner and Mr Batchler – Cambodia and Vietnam building a house and chook pen for a family and supporting less privileged communities by constructing a toilet block and vegetable gardens all with monies raised by our staff and students
The time you spent away from your families is much appreciated by the Cav team, students and parents.
New A/Deputy Principal Appointed
Due to the unexpected and sudden resignation of Mr Matthew Morgan from the Department of Education, please join with me in welcoming Mr John Hazzard to Cav Rd. John joins us as an experienced Deputy Principal of 10 years from Redbank Plains SHS. John brings a wealth of experience in educational leadership to our school and I am confident that John will serve our community with distinction.
We thank Matthew for the many years of wonderful service, leadership and instruction that he has given to our State schools in Queensland. In particular, his care and concern for all is to be admired. We wish Matthew well as he embarks on his new journey.
SED Senior Information Evening
Thank you to our parents who attended the SEP Information Evening for Years 10, 11 and 12 students last week. It is important that all of our students have a valid pathway when they leave school in Year 12. This was a wonderful opportunity to hear from community groups about the many opportunities that exist for all students.
Leadership Induction
Last Friday was a wonderful celebration of leadership as we introduced our Student Leadership Team to the school community. Many proud parents and families joined us for the Induction Ceremony and morning tea.
Congratulations to our 2017 School Leaders:

Best wishes to our Year 7 students and teachers attending Year 7 Camp this week.
Attendance Target 95%
Research reveals that regular attendance at school is a significant indicator of student success. I ask that you do all you can to ensure your child is at school every day unless they have a genuine reason for not attending. Student attendance will be regularly reviewed this year and contact will be made with you should we have concerns about your child’s attendance. If your child is absent, please do not hesitate to phone the student absence line on 33940703 or email attendance@cavroadshs.eq.edu.au to explain their absence. Our aim is to work with you to maximise the opportunities for success of all students.

Every day counts at school
The Department of Education and Training has a range of free resources to promote the importance of going to school, every day. Research shows that school attendance leads to positive student outcomes, and can help children to build social and emotional skills.
The Every day counts campaign, developed with the input of Solid Pathways students, features popular footy players, including Johnathan Thurston, Sam Thaiday and Greg Inglis. Resources include an animation, comic book, dedicated website and online posters of the footy players.
Check out the resources and see if you can spot some of your favourite NRL footy players — visit the Every day counts website

This is Madoka’s artist statement:
“This piece is an evolution from previous explorations of human form and how we interact with the world around us. Childhood is a time in our life where the world is big and bright filled with so many opportunities and then we step over the precipice into the adult realm. The vibrant, sugary colour scheme was inspired by Pip & Pop – used to evoke the childhood memories of fairy floss and the fairground.”
Welcome back to all students for a creative 2017 and a special welcome to the Year 7 cohort. We look forward to another productive year. Students are reminded to bring an old shirt or art smock for use in practical lessons, if they wish. Students are expected to have a visual art journal and correct equipment at all times.
Senior Art students will be able to access exhibitions at G.O.M.A. and Q.A.G. this term on planned excursions. Dates for this will be sent home shortly.

Academic Excellence Program
The Academic Excellence Program and the Music Academies welcomed over 400 parents and students to our Information Session held last Tuesday evening. Our academies provide enriching experiences which foster the development of collaboration, commitment and focus through extension programs before or after school. The Academic Excellence Program, or AEP as we call it, brings together the facilities of Science, Humanities, Maths and Technology; we host engaging and challenging sessions that centre on inquiry, problem solving, exploration, and fun. 2017 promises to be an exciting year for all our academies at Cavendish Road HS and we can’t wait to see the creativity unfold in the AEP. For more information on the AEP, please see our Key Documents section of our website.

2017 Griffith University Future Leaders Retreat
Sharar Bhuiyan took time out of his holidays and was an exceptional ambassador for Cavendish Road State High School, whilst on campus from Tuesday 10 January to Thursday 12 January. The high calibre of students that attended contributed to the fantastic discussions and sharing of ideas that took place throughout the retreat.
The retreat enabled students to immerse themselves in a three-day leadership development program that featured expert speakers from across the country, as well as sessions designed to prepare students for their upcoming leadership roles, studies for Year 12 and personal development to guide the transition to university and beyond.
We look forward to providing ongoing development opportunities for students at Cavendish Road State High School throughout 2017 and welcoming your student leaders at next year’s retreat.

German News
Guten Tag – Herzlich Willkommen!
Welcome to German for 2017. We are looking forward to a busy, exciting and rewarding year in this subject.
At the end of 2016, Frau Pettersen began her maternity leave and we welcome Sarah Gavranich to the Languages staff. Sara will be replacing Frau Pettersen for the duration of her leave.
Outstanding results
Congratulations to the Year 12 German students of 2016. I was recently able to see the data generated by these students, and was not surprised by how well they did. The German students’ results as a subject cohort, were first class. Language students were also over represented in impressive OP scores. Language study is a very viable option for students who desire an opportunity to attend university.
Subject selection for 2018
It is never too early for students to begin thinking about subject selection. Particularly for year 9 2018. The current year 8 German students will study German for only 6 more months, either in Semester 1 or 2. The year 8 cohort this year is very strong, with some outstanding results achieved in year 7 thus far. The languages department would very much like to see as many of these year 8 students continue German into year 9 and beyond. Feel free to contact me if you would like any further information regarding subject selection for year 9.
Study tips
There are many ways that your child can practise/improve their language skills. Free online programs or aps such as Languages Online or Duolingo are very useful. Watching programs in German that are downloaded or subtitled is another useful strategy. Year 9 – 12 students have begun a wider reading program. This mirrors initiatives to increase vocabulary and literacy in English through wider reading.
Finally
This year, we will have several excursions planned in this subject: to the German club, Oktoberfest and German film festival. We are also looking at a company to ascertain the viability of a trip to Germany. Keep an eye out for more details, during the year.

Japanese News
The Japanese department welcomes back Mrs Angeline Sloman, who has been a key member of the Japanese staff at Cavendish Road SHS for a number of years. Mrs Sloman will be teaching some of our new Year 7 students this semester. Term 1 will also see us welcoming two Japanese native speaker teaching assistants, who will be working with classes in Week 8 this term.
Dates are also being finalised for the Omiya Koryo Senior High visit in Term 3. Information about hosting our Japanese visitors for the eight night stay in mid-August will be sent home before the end of term. We urge the Cavendish Road SHS community to return the hospitality received by the excited group from Cavendish Road SHS embarked on the 2016 Japan Study Tour at the end of Term 4. Once again the tour was a great success, with the relationship with our sister school Omiya Koryo SHS being further strengthened and Cav Road students developing their language skills and cultural knowledge while enjoying the scenic highlights of Japan. Please enjoy the following report by Year 11 student S. Newman about their experience in Japan.

Trip to Japan
By S Newman - Year 11
“On the 27th of November 2016, fifteen students from Years 10 to 12 and two teachers boarded a flight to Tokyo, Japan. In Tokyo we visited the Tokyo Sky Tree, Asakusa Nakamise-dori (the temple precinct and shopping street), the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, known as ‘Miraikan’. We also saw the Gundam statue, the Eiffel Tower and the Statue of Liberty replicas located in Pallette Town. No not the Pokémon town. We saw that on the first day and by the end of it, most of us were sick of walking. We also visited Harajuku (a popular shopping street) and Akihabara (an electrical town) in Tokyo.
On the 30th of November (my birthday) we spent travelling to Omiya Koryo (Cavendish Road’s sister school) and at the end of the day, we parted ways to begin our home stay. Some of us went to Disney Land, some went to Mount Fuji and some even had an Onsen (hot spring) experience while spending free time with our host families.
At school we had to introduce ourselves to the staff and student body at an assembly where we were heralded in with trumpets! In the classroom, we learnt what it was like to study in a Japanese school. In these two days, I learnt that school in Japan is way more intense than Australia. So a word of advice from me, be grateful that you live here and can understand the language.
The departure from Omiya Koryo was filled with cries of “Goodbye” and “I’ll miss you”. Once everyone was detached from their host families, we boarded the first of many bullet trains to Hiroshima.
To sum up the first day in Hiroshima- sad and heartbreaking. We travelled by bus to Heiwa Kinen Koen (Peace Memorial Park). From there we visited the museum to learn about the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings in 1945. It was hard not to tear up as I listened to how little school children were incinerated by the blast.
In the afternoon we caught a ferry to Miyajima Island and were given time to explore markets and shops. As we were looking for lunch, I went to pat one of the passing deer that can be found on the island. It leaned forward and snatched my map out of my hand! I played tug-of-war with a deer. I’ll tell you, I didn’t plan on doing that when I thought I would get to go to Japan. After lunch, we walked to the beautiful Itsukushima Shrine and everyone lined up for a photo with the floating Torii gate in the background. We then caught a ropeway to the top of Mt Misen where you could see the breathtaking scenery of the entire island.
Our next stop was Kyoto, where we stayed in a ryokan, a traditional Japanese inn. Our time in Kyoto was full of more exploring, shopping and sightseeing. We all walked through Tenryuji, a beautiful traditional Japanese temple, with a large pond and lots of greenery. We also went on an exciting boat ride and saw some beautiful bamboo.
In Osaka we visited Universal studios and spent the day going on thrilling rides, seeing Harry Potter merchandise, realistic buildings and eating good quality pizza. We also went to Himeji Castle next, a building full of rich feudal history and lots of stairs.”

Senior Schooling News
I would like to take the opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Karyn Trapp and I have joined the team at Cavendish Road State High School this year in the role of Director of Student Achievement (DOSA) Years 11 and 12.
I look forward to working with you and your student this year to ensure they achieve success in their senior programs.
We have started the year by making some changes to students’ programs to ensure that they are on a successful pathway to achieving their QCE (Queensland Certification of Education) which is the certificate that Year 12 students receive on exit to state that they have successfully completed their senior studies.
Over the next few weeks, I will be conducting the OP Estimate interviews with the Year 12 OP Eligible students. The purpose of the interview is to provide the students with their OP estimate and strategies they can apply to their studies this year to enable them to achieve an OP in the desired 1-15 range to gain entry into University.
Year 11 and 12 OP and Tertiary Selection Rank Information Evening
On Tuesday, 14th February, we are holding an information evening in the Auditorium from 6.00 pm to 7.00 pm. The focus of the evening is to provide information for senior students and their families about how to plan for success in Year 12. I would like to invite all Year 11 and 12 students and their families to attend this important evening. Letters will be provided to the students to take home outlining further details of the evening’s events.

Run a Virtual Business during School Holidays
Senior secondary school students interested in knowing how business works can now enjoy the popular three-day ECOMAN program during school holidays.
Students will have the unforgettable experience of running virtual businesses from inside the CBD offices of some of Brisbane’s leading companies and professional firms.
For more than 20 years, the Queensland Private Enterprise Centre (QPEC) has been providing ECOMAN (ECOnomic MANagement) programs to thousands of students across Queensland. Guided by accredited facilitators, participating students assume senior management positions in competing companies which they run over four years of fluctuating commercial fortunes compressed into the three days. They have the stimulation of doing business within the real world offices of their venue hosts.
ECOMAN is now being offered during 26-28 June 2017 for a charge of $180 per student. Parents are invited to book Year 10, 11 and 12 students by requesting an enrolment form by emailing qpec-group@griffith.edu.au. For further information on the ECOMAN program run by QPEC, see:
http://www.qpec.org.au/
Year 7 Humanities
On Monday and Tuesday of Week 3, all Year 7 Humanities students were fortunate to examine a variety of ancient artefacts. So far this term students have been studying archaeology and the means by which we understand the past through sources and artefacts. Students were able to view 16 artefacts loaned to the school by the University of Queensland Social Sciences Department. They inspected, discussed and hypothesised the details of these historic items.
Some quotes from the students.
“It was an amazing opportunity because not many other schools get to do things like that. When we got there it was great because we got to hypothesise what civilisations they were from, and when we were told how old the artefacts actually were I was shocked.” - Sienna
“It was really cool to see artefacts from the past and discuss in our groups what they could have been made of and what they may have been used for.” – Persia
“I thought that the artefact viewing was awesome, it was fun to do something different and see all the other kids enjoying themselves. The artefacts were so cool to learn about, it was really nice to be given artefacts from a special place. Overall, I enjoyed it and want to do something like that again.” - Sabrina

We have also had student engage in programs during holidays. These tend to have a leadership theme. During our recent holidays two students from Cav attended the QUT Future Leaders. Thanks Emmanuel for writing the following:-
QUT Future Leaders
“The QUT Future Leaders program is aimed at Year 11 and 12 students with great leadership potential both within school and into the future. QUT run and organise the programs to help enhance our leadership abilities. The student ambassadors, along with special guest speakers, broaden our perception of leadership and challenge us to think, act and lead from different points of view. This helps us become more versatile and able to problem solve in complex situations.
I personally came into the program with a narrow view of what it means to be a leader. Now in my second year I am much more confident and outspoken with a greater understanding of leadership. The most important skills I have learnt being in the program is how to communicate with different people and how to enter a situation and adjust my ʺleadership styleʺ to better suit the situation to help reach a decision or solution quickly.
QUT also allow Future Leaders access to the university library for valuable resources. Furthermore we learn study tips, stress relief techniques to help with the upcoming exams and get to use their world class laboratories.
I definitely recommend students in year 10 who have held leadership positions, both in school and outside, to apply for this course at the end of the year. It is truly worth it and will be a great experience.” – Emmanuel Yala Year 12
Making a Decision about Careers
It is not unusual for young people to be unsure about their future. And while there is no problem with this, it is helpful if we encourage them to reflect on, the world of work. By this we mean what it is that sits around what we do? Working inside/outside, working on your own/work in teams, helping/advising, wearing uniforms, shift work, physical work as opposed to sedentary is earning money important? Having conversations around these considerations can act as great thought provokers. Looking at your own work, discussing what you love about it, reflecting on what you don’t like and thinking about others in the family – aunts, uncles and friends. Sometimes these conversations will prompt a thought.
Here at Cav all students will participate in Career Education. The following sites may also assist your child:
This site looks at aspects of career exploration, a great place to start
https://www.careers.govt.nz/tools/career-checker/
This site provides, amongst other things industry profiles.
http://www.graduateopportunities.com/
We are available to parents and students. If you would like to make appointment with either of the Guidance Officer please email or contact the school. We look forward to working with students and families during their journey at Cavendish Road State High School.

The Year 9C Home Economics and Senior Hospitality students prepared a range of savoury and sweet foods, and the Year 10 Home Economics - Asian Fusion (ASF) class were involved in the set up and service for the function. The students responded well to the challenge and received many compliments.

Learn to code with NoahCode
The technological revolution which has now arrived means that many traditional jobs will very soon disappear. Our children will need to acquire the skills to succeed in the new digital economy. Our program’s main goal is to get students in Years 7 to 9 thinking in computer code. We believe our strategy and tools are capable of achieving this. To begin with we will expose the students to simple coding theories. After this we will slowly progress into more complex theories and coding activities. In our program we demonstrate and teach fundamental computing concepts with the 3 main languages of the internet which are HTML, CSS & JavaScript.
The NoahCode course is an afterschool extra-curricula program run by noahcode.com.au. For more information on the program, please get your child to attend the free demonstration session on Wednesday 8 March at the start of second break (12:50pm) in the Resource Centre.
In Touch
Hello and welcome to the first edition of the 2017 ‘In Touch’ segment of the newsletter. In this section of the school newsletter, we recognise and celebrate team and individual successes of all students in the Touch Football Academy. This segment will also be an opportunity for me to keep you updated with events, training days and special occasions that our ‘Touch’ students are involved in. Already, this month we must acknowledge and celebrate the success of last year’s graduating students, Kobe Nona (Captain of the ladies 17 Years), James Price, Jayden Fielding –Smith and Mr Chris Loth (Coach) who in January represented Australia in the Youth Trans-Tasman Test Series against New Zealand. All players represented their country with distinction, winning each of their age divisions and the overall series. Special mention to James Price who received the Troy Malcolm award. This award recognises effort, attitude, commitment in training and team work, not only throughout the series, but throughout the training camps leading into the event itself. This award is presented to only one male youth player every two years, so it is quite an achievement.
Kobe, Jayden and James all said it was a fantastic experience. We are very privileged and proud of their success and thankful that they have been part of the Cavendish Road State High School touch football program.
This year, we are excited to welcome twenty-eight Year 7 students into the program. During our first lesson together we were also lucky to have Kobe, James and Jayden, who were just off the plane from New Zealand, come along and talk about their experiences playing for Australia. They also made time to present the jersey to the Year 7s to make them officially a part of the program. We also discussed the year ahead and spoke about the fabulous opportunities the students will have as part of this academy.
All students in the academy should have received a Touch calendar for the year. If you haven’t please contact me. This calendar includes all the touch dates that our students can be a part of. It illustrates the school carnivals, including representative dates, club dates for competitions at Whites Hill (BMTA) and representative pathways either Mustangs or Cobras (older students). It is important that our students are aware of the first level of representative school touch with district trial dates that are to be held on the following days:
South District Trials
Monday 13 or Tuesday 14 March (officially TBA)
For 13-15 Years and 16-19 Years boys and girls.

Tuesday May 2 - For 10-12 Years
Girls Mt Gravatt Primary district trails
Thursday May 4 - For 10-12 years
In 2016 we strengthened the Cavendish Road Touch program by providing new opportunities for Academy students. We started this process by forming a partnership with Queensland Touch Association. We will maintain this relationship and strengthen it further by working with development officer, Glen Walker. Glen will come to Cav Road regularly during the year to provide an alternate coaching experience for all students in the Academy. Also, our relationship with the Storm Touch Club was cemented in 2016. We had many students coaching junior teams and refereeing regularly. I was thrilled to hear so many positive stories about our wonderful students and how grateful the club, players and parents were of having them coaching their children. If your child is interested in being part of the program again or as a new start, please have them come see me as soon as possible.
As part of the academy we expect all students to be involved in many facets of school life. Last week we had our School Swimming carnival, where we had over 900 students compete. Congratulations to two of these touch academy students, Sam Carmody 13 Years and Ned Barbara 15 Years who competed valiantly at the swimming carnival and were named boys age champs for their respective age groups. Well done boys, you rock.
What’s Coming Up?
In conjunction with ten other schools, Cavendish Road SHS will again play in The Schools Touch League. This competition is available to boys and girls from the Academy who are 15 and 13 Years and under. The first Schools Touch League Competition (STL) is to be hosted by Southport SHS and held at Owen Park Southport on Monday March 20. A letter will be coming home in the next week or so, which gives more details on this event. This letter needs to be returned to me in the T block staffroom.

Congratulations to Sam Williams on qualifying to attend the Met East Swimming Trials in late February. A great day had by all, with our students enjoying the challenges of the day.

Representative Sport Trials
Throughout Semester 1 and Term 3, opportunities exist for all students aged 12-19 years to trial for various sports at the school representative level. For our younger Year 7s, there are 12 year old sport trials for Mt Gravatt Primary District. For all other students aged 13-19 years sports trials are with South District Secondary District. Students wanting to trial for Metropolitan East Region must progress through the district sport pathway. Notice of all trials are advertised across Cavendish Road through Student Notices (heard in Peer Support of a morning) and located on the SPORT noticeboard outside the T Block staffroom. All trials involve official paperwork that includes the Principal Approval to attend. Students cannot trial without this paperwork. For all trials paperwork or general inquiries on approaching trials, please contact Ms Nikki Bairstow – Interschool Sports Coordinator.

Liam Hames was named in the Under 14 Development Squad for South East Queensland Cricket (Stormers) which recently played in the SCCA Under 14 Summer Carnival. Liam was named Player of the Carnival for the Stormers after an excellent week in the field. He led the charge with the best bowling figures of 4/12 on the second day and topped scored with 41 not out on the 4th day. We are very proud of his achievements. Well done Liam!
On 4th December, 2016 at the All-School Athletics Championships, Year 12 student Neil Janse Van Rensburg finished 3rd in Javelin after throwing a 65.83 metre performance. Neil is a member of Queensland Athletics’ Elite Program for 2017. Neil is a very talented athlete and we look forward to great things from him this year. Keep up the great work Neil.
Hydration for Summer
Water is something that we all need for optimal health. Sure, soft drink is sweeter and tastes much nicer, but water is the way forward for better health. The heat is here and here to stay for a few weeks yet. Keep up your water intake. It's easy to have that quick soft drink or juice, but we do need to be reminded to re-hydrate for our body’s cells, particularly here in Queensland. Queensland Health recommend we consume 2-3 litres of water per day, with additional water when losing fluid (sweat) during physical activity. Queensland Health recommends young people are reminded to consume water regularly not just when they're exercising.

Finance News
Student Resource Scheme 2017
We would like to welcome back all of our returning Parents/Carers, and welcome our new Parents/Carers to Cavendish Road State High School. We would also like to thank those parents who have returned their Student Resource forms and have made their first term instalment payment.
In a short space of time we have distributed text book resources to 91% of Year 7 Students, 93% of Year 8 Students, 91% of Year 9 Students, 96% of Year 10 students, 93% of Year 11 students, and 80% of Year 12 students.
We would not have achieved this without your help and patience at the beginning of a very busy year. So from the Finance Team, thank you.
There are still a few parents who are yet to return their Student Resource Forms and First Term instalment, please return these and make payment as soon as possible. Resources will not be distributed to students until all finance requirements have been met.
Students are well and truly into the study of their classes and there is a small percentage of students who are yet to receive resources due to non-return of forms and non-payment of Term 1 instalment. If you are unsure if you still need to return forms or make First Term Instalment please do not hesitate to contact our Finance Team by email on finance@cavrdshs.eq.edu.au All Term 1 instalments for the 2017 Student Resource Scheme are now overdue.
Subject Charges and Invoice issue
We are in the process of invoicing the subject charges for 2017. Subject selections have settled and we will be invoicing these charges in the next couple of weeks.
We understand that some of you may have paid for subject charges when you paid for the Student Resource Scheme, and may receive an invoice that looks like it hasn’t had the payment applied.
The finance system for the Queensland Department of Education dictates how we process payments and invoices.
- Invoices are raised to parents and carers.
- Invoices are emailed to parent, carer debtors.
- Payments are then applied to invoices.
- PLEASE DO NOT EMAIL Finance or PHONE Finance until after the statement issue on the 24th February if you have queries in relation to subject charges.
- Invoices when paid in full will not appear on statements.
If you would like to see more information regarding your student account, please login to QParents – your one stop portal for student information and payments.
Statements 2017
Statements will be issued on the last Friday of each month to the parent/carer debtor’s listed email address. Please ensure that your email details are up to date. You will not receive a statement if you have paid all of your student invoices.
While we take all care in getting these statements to you in a timely manner, if the details that you have provided are not up to date, statements and student account details may take a little longer to get to you. If you do not receive your statement on the 24th February by email, please check QParents for your details and please update. Your updated email details will follow to your student accounts.
We advise parents that the quickest way to pay your student account is by clicking on the BPoint link at the bottom of your statement. Payments made through the Department of Education BPoint portal will be applied to your student account within 24-48 hours. A BPoint Link is also available on the Quicklinks section on the front page of Cavendish Road SHS website.
If you make payments directly to our bank account, please be aware that these payments may take anything up to 5 business days before they are credited to Cavendish Road SHS bank account. If you are using this pay method please be aware that Cavendish Road SHS policy will not allow Finance to accept payments for excursions if they are credited to our bank account after the due date for payment of the excursion.
