The Principal’s Report

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to Week 10, thank you for a great Term 3 everyone! Special thanks to all staff and students for their hard work this Term.

As I write this piece, Ms Niland, Ms Stebbings, Mr Caruso and 30 students are on the trip of a lifetime. The USA Opportunity Tour will explore Columbia University, New York University, Wall Street, Google, Ground Zero, Central Park, The American Museum of Natural History, Broadway, The Yankees vs Orioles at New York Stadium, Princeton University, the White House, NASA, George Washington University, The Pentagon, Stanford University, Apple and Alcatraz. We wish our students and staff an exciting and memorable trip and of course hope that our students gain some valuable information about post school University Scholarships!

Bill Turner Cup Success

The girls played off for third place after going down to a very strong Westfield Sports High 3-0 in the semi-final. The girls picked themselves up after this defeat and claimed third place beating Maribyrnong Sports Academy 5-0. The girls showed great character and have represented Cav Rd extremely well. Great work Team.

All that we Expect of our Students and more

Last Monday Mitch Baker spoke to a Deputy from St Agnes Primary School letting him know that two of our Year 9 boys went above and beyond on Friday afternoon. A St Agnes Year 6 boy left the school grounds without permission. The school tried to find him and didn’t know where he was. The parents were notified and a search for him was underway. Two of our students, Sam Pollock and Jake Ward saw this boy who looked quite distressed and stopped to ask him if he was okay. The boys called St Agnes’s and stayed with him until he was collected. The parents were obviously very grateful to these boys and could not speak highly enough of them. The school also felt the same and they really wanted to make sure we were aware of this happening and that these two students are a credit to themselves, their family and our school. The school had Sam’s number after he had called them and they called him on Friday night to say thank you. Team, thank you for your contribution to our wonderful students.

Transforming pedagogy through Philosophical Inquiry

Cavendish State High School and Buranda State School have designed and delivered professional development programs aimed at improving students’ capacity to think. Primarily, the courses focus on Philosophical Inquiry but more broadly the aim is to enhance teacher ability to apply inquiry based pedagogical approaches in all subjects. Over the past two years we have:

  • Delivered professional development to over 300 teachers across 28 schools
  • Provided support and established partnerships with national and international schools
  • Collaborated with the University of Queensland to create a MOOC – Deep Learning through Transformative Pedagogy with 10,000 students enrolled across 70 countries. MOOC stands for Massive Open Online Course

Congratulations Ms Stebbings

Ms Stebbings has been nominated as a semi-finalist in the University of Southern Queensland Teaching Excellence Award, one of the categories in the 2017 Queensland Community Achievement Awards.

The first round of judging for these prestigious Awards was completed recently and the judging panel has been very impressed by the very high standard of nominations received from right across Queensland. Congratulations Ms Stebbings!

Attendance Update

The decline in attendance for 2017 can be attributed to an increase in days lost due to illness. Data from OneSchool reveals that for the same period last year students lost 7334 due to illness. In 2017, days lost is currently 9260 – an increase of 1926 days (see graph below).

Japanese Department News

We were very grateful to the twenty-five generous Cav Road families who welcomed the Omiya Koryo students into their homes for a week in late August. The students and their teachers, Mr Kobayashi and Mr Shishido had a wonderful time visiting our classes, teaching Japanese language and culture and improving their English skills. The students of the two schools had a chance to relax together when Mrs Sloman accompanied the group for a fun day out to Dreamworld. Two of the students, Rikuto Nakai and Haruka Sekiguchi were very pleased to be able to call Cav Road home for six weeks while they extended their stay here until the end of Term 3.

Omiya Koryo State High School highly values the sister school relationship with Cavendish Road State High School. Our schools strive to keep this a reciprocal relationship where the students from both schools can experience a homestay free of charge. To show their appreciation to the families who volunteered Omiya Koryo SHS hosted a ‘Thank You Party’ on the final night of the visit. Students received participation certificates, joined in a song performance and were treated to a range of Australian-themed party food. Our Japanese visitors particularly enjoyed the meat pies, pavlovas and a special treat of yam cake from the Torres Strait. They look forward to welcoming students from these generous families to Omiya Koryo SHS in the future. It was heart-warming to see old friendships renewed as those students had visited Omiya Koryo in 2016 returned the Japanese hospitality by welcoming their Omiya host buddies into their homes here. Once again, we sincerely thank those families whose support for the Omiya Koryo SHS visit will enable us to offer our Cav Road students the same wonderful homestay opportunity in Japan.

Year 12 QCS Test

The QCS Test was held over Tuesday 29 August and Wednesday 30 August 2017. Students completed four test papers including a Writing Task, Short Response and two Multiple Choice Question papers.

Congratulations to all Year 12 students for the effort they put into meeting their commitment to the two long days of testing. All students managed the strict testing conditions to complete the four papers with very high standards of behaviour. All students should be very proud of their efforts. Thank you to the Year 11 students who served a light breakfast to the QCS students on both mornings before the test. Students will learn the results from the QCS Test when they receive their Senior Statements in December.

Year 11 Overall Position (OP) Estimate Interviews

On our return to school in Term 4, I will be conducting the Year 11 OP estimate interviews. Students will be attending a short interview with me to discuss their current OP estimate, career pathway choice and to develop strategies that students are able to put into place to improve their current position. These interviews assist us in ensuring students have chosen the most suitable pathway that matches their ability and skills and to see that they are achieving the required results to enter their course of choice at University.

Our Year 11 and 12 students have just completed their mini exam block for Term 3. We look forward to seeing the results and will work with students in Term 4 to continue to achieve success.

I wish all of our Year 11 and 12 students a safe and enjoyable break and look forward to working with you all again in Term 4.

Visual Art News

With the 2017 Academic year rapidly drawing to a close, our Senior Art students are busy finalising their folio work in preparation for the QCAA Verification process early Term 4. Their folio work will be on display in the Resource Centre during Graduation week for those interested in viewing. I have no hesitation applauding the high calibre of work our students have produced, under the guidance of Mrs Linden Scott. Well wishes are extended to our Year 12 Senior cohort for the next few very busy months!

Currently paintings produced by Year 11 Visual Arts in Practice, and Year 10 Ceramics are on display in the Resource Centre.

Below are images of the fabulous work displayed.

The ‘Coorparoo State School Connect’ has historically been ‘actioned’ by Mrs Vicki Schafer and I know that all involved have very much appreciated this continued initiative. As always, the outcomes produced are fantastic.

Mrs Shafer has accepted a position as ‘Acting Head of Faculty’, Browns Plains S.H.S. We wish her the very best. I know she is missed at Cav!

'Clear eyes' is a collaboration between Year 2 students representing the road ahead and the notion of getting along together. Clear eyes holds the message that students have needed to focus this year to stay on track of their learning. Students worked as a team to create this piece. The medium used is acrylic paint that has been stencilled to create texture through the patterns. The process of creating the artwork relies on the collaborative nature of the task and is indicative of the learning process by the class.

'Drippy Ears' is a collaborative artwork by Year 2 students representing the colour mix and depth of knowledge students have learned this year. Sometimes our kids do not say much and yet actions or symbols tell parents more... for example, the dripping is one of those symbols representing an information line. This artwork was created using primary and secondary colours, while incorporating patterns to some areas of the dog’s body. Each student was involved in painting the background, dog and patterning of the artwork. The process of this artwork relied solely on the students working as a team, where one stopped another continued to create a wonderful piece.

It's a busy time of the year during spring which reflects the lives of Year 4 students. ‘Spring' was created using a layered approach to art making, incorporating patterning through brush strokes. Students have been investigating positives and negatives in class and this artwork plays on this learnt work while painting the negative shape of flowers and creatures. This artwork is a collaborative piece that demonstrates students’ ability to work together and make artistic choices.

Due to return in Term 4, is Ms. Sarah Hickey who is currently overseas as a selected artist in ‘ART Project Graniti’. Her brief was to design and paint a large-scale mural for the town centre, Graniti, Sicily. We look forward to getting updates and viewing the completed work.

Natural History Group

This year’s Natural History Group is looking at the behavioural reactions of mice. As part of the study, the students wanted to dissect a rat. Two of the students said their mothers would like to be included. So Samantha Eichler’s mother, Linda and Inga Powell’s mother, Karin joined their daughters and dissected the rats. Mothers and daughters working together in a biology class! It was great to see. Margita Downey, our School Chaplain, also assists in the activities of the group.

Year 10 Business Law Court Visit

On the 22nd and 29th of August, the Year 10 Business Law classes visited the Holland Park Magistrates Court to observe first-hand court proceedings. Cases that were heard included drug offences, traffic offences and weapons offences with cases ranging from 5 to 10 minutes each. We observed defendants appearing before the Magistrate on video link from prison and those who were called over by the police prosecutor. Before the proceedings, the registrar introduced us to the different types of cases that were heard in the court. He also explained the meaning of different legal terms and how we had to act during court proceedings. Our visit to the Holland Park Magistrates Court taught us valuable information about court proceedings and how cases are dealt with by the Magistrate.

One Book Better

In terms three and four, Cavendish Road State High School is taking part in a charity book drive to help Crestmead State School raise 15,000 books for less-fortunate families. This is a wonderful program that collects second hand books that may have outgrown their loved ones, and gifts them to new homes to be cherished, loved and to build new memories with another loving owner. We are looking for books for children aged pre-prep (approx. 4 years old) to adolescent (approx. 17 years old). Cav Road will be collecting books until the end of week 1 in term four.

The book drive is being run as a competition through Peer Support (PS), and the PS class that collects the most books before the end of term 3 will receive a prize. Not only this, but we will all know we have given the gift of reading to children who will cherish the books for many years to come. If we can donate one book per Cav student, we will help the charity raise more than 10% of their intended goal.

The books will be collected by peer support teachers each morning, or students may drop them off to K20 staffroom or the Resource Centre, where the students’ peer support classes will be recorded to add to their final tally. So let’s show that Cav ‘Green Machine’ spirit, and make these kids’ lives ONE BOOK BETTER, at a time. Thank you!

Drama News

Well done everyone for surviving this very busy time of year. I am very proud of the recent assessment results Drama students have worked really hard to achieve. Your efforts are greatly appreciated. Term 4 is going to be a short term for students with assessment due in a couple of weeks. Year 12 students are preparing for their OPEN WORKS performance assessment. Watch this space for details. It is a student devised, written and performed production.

Year 11 students will begin their Directing unit on Shakespeare’s Hamlet and Year 10 students will visit Holland Park State School and work with the Year 5 students on the annual Christmas concert before preparing for their Cyber Drama unit. There is so much diverse learning happening. Year 9 students are very busy finishing assessment and preparing for Theatre Sports and Year 8 students will be writing scripts and beginning Documentary Drama performances. I am very excited to be a part of the hard work and outstanding outcomes from every drama student.

Dracula by Shake and Stir at Cremorne Theatre

Dracula was a very popular production this term and the 22 students who attended saw very quickly why this company is getting a reputation for outstanding play adaption performances. As the year 10 students are studying Gothic Theatre, this performance was a must see for them and did not disappoint. With lots of tension, blackouts, smoke machines, and dramatic music, Dracula scared us on a regular basis and entertained us for 90 minutes. This was the first evening performance for year 10 students and I look forward to taking them to see much more live theatre next year.

Open Works by Year 12 Drama Students

Year 12 have currently devised their OPEN WORKS performance for their final assessment this year titled “Rumour Has It.” The date is 31 October 2017, commencing at 6.30pm in the school hall. This production has been devised entirely by the students and will be cast and directed by them also. I love this time of year, seeing senior students excel in telling their stories.

Child Protection Week – Keeping our Children and Young People Safe Online

This year’s Child Protection Week 3-9th September focusses on the importance of be cybersafe. The Office of the eSafety Commissioner provides some reliable and relevant resources on keeping ourselves as parents and carers well informed and our children and young people safe and responsible so that their experiences online are positive and enjoyable. A key part of enabling this focus is to educate and prevent harmful online behaviour from occurring in the first place. As parents and carers, you know your young person better than anyone and have the best opportunity to help educate them so they can explore safely.

Too much time online

Often our young people seem to be engaged in more than one task at a time, downloading and listening to music while studying and chatting with friends online (and in some cases as in my home…watching television at the same time!!). The number of hours our young people spend online can vary significantly. There is no guideline for the ‘right’ amount of time however if their online activity appears to impact negatively on their behaviour or wellbeing, or that of the family, it may be time to discuss expectations and establish time limits.

CONSTRUCTION which makes them extra vulnerable to the potential risks of BEING ONLINE……

WHAT CAN I DO?

  • The longer you wait to address the issue, the more difficult it is to overcome. If you see a problem emerging act right away.
  • Talk to your young person about the concerns you have and monitor what games, apps and devices are brought or used by your child.
  • You may like to install a program on the device which can be adjusted to limit the amount of time an internet connection will be available on that device.
  • Consider implementing family agreements about the amount of time your young person spends online. A similar approach can be used to limit access to devices.

IF your young person seems particularly anxious or irritable, or you notice them seeming isolated from friends or activities, there may be an underlying mental health issue. Talk to your school supports, GP or one of the below services. Be aware of any unwanted online contact including sexting, and/ or social networking issues such as cyberbullying which may be causing concern.

For more information visit the website below. Resources include practical, action focussed advice, videos, games, support and research based information free of charge.

No one single parental control tool is 100% effective. Nothing can replace your parental influence as good role models around the use of multiple connected devices; setting boundaries, understanding (or trying) devices our young people use and talking to them about the importance of staying safe online and establishing and maintaining trust and a certain degree of privacy. TRICKY!

Bill Turner National Finals

On Monday 4th September the Bill Turner Trophy team departed for Lake Macquarie to compete in the Girls’ Bill Turner Trophy National Finals. The girls were matched up against Westfield Sports High (nine time champions) in the semi-final and despite having a couple of chances to take an early lead, we went into half time down one goal to nil. Immediately after the break, we had the opportunity to get the scores level again but could not convert. Westfield then managed to score from the spot after winning a penalty and from an unfortunate deflected own goal to finish the game 3.0. The team battled well against a very strong Westfield Sport High, demonstrated by the fact they went on to beat Hunter Sports High 6.1 in the final.

The girls picked themselves up, showing great character after Tuesday's defeat, to comprehensively beat Maribyrnong Sports Academy 5.0 and claim third place. Dominque Spampinato; Emily Butler, Jaimee Taylor and Estella Mazzoni all getting on the score sheet. Congratulations to the girls and coach, Georgina Amos, for finishing third out of 400 schools in Australia, a fantastic achievement.

Drumbeat

We are half way through the drumbeat program and we have had many interesting discussions about the value of diversity in our communities. Diversity allows individuality, while maintaining social harmony and connection to others. As a group, we are gaining confidence in playing the drums and in using the drums to express ourselves. Our school nurse, Regina has also been co-facilitating this program with me. Thank you Regina.

Life Group

Life group was encouraged recently by a gift from the St Mark’s youth group. The youth group made a gingerbread cake for us! Life-group wish to thank the youth group of St Mark’s Church for this lovely encouragement. The students have been looking at Jesus’ teachings this term, and the ‘beatitudes’. They have been discussing how they might apply their understandings to their own life situations.

Chappy’s Chill Time

Chappy’s Chill time continues to be a place of fun, acceptance and belonging for some Year 7’s.

Breakfast Club

No better way to start the week or end the week than with barbecue pancakes with chocolate or maple syrup! Thank you Hillsong Youth Services for providing breakfast club. Thank you Jim and Jennifer for volunteering for Monday Pancakes and thanks to those wonderful people who have donated ingredients!

Parents and Citizens Association

Parents and Citizens’ (P and C) meetings are usually held on the third Tuesday of the month from 7pm in the Administration Block in B7. However, please note that there is no meeting in October due to the Awards Evening in the same week. The next meeting will be Tuesday 21st of November 2017. All parents and carers are most welcome to come along to meetings. This is a great way to find out what is happening at the school and to meet school staff and other parents.

What’s been happening?

A representative from UMS uniform suppliers attended the last P and C meeting to show some active girls’ uniform samples that are being considered by a number of state schools in Queensland. Some items will become standard stock items, meaning that they will be cheaper for schools choosing those items with no minimum order quantities. Following feedback from Cav Road P and C meeting attendees and from showings at other schools, some modifications are being made and these will soon be available for us to view. From there, the P and C will select some items for possible inclusion as new uniform options and seek feedback from the school community. The uniform shop is still out of stock of some items, such as sport uniforms and some sizes of girls’ blouses.

Support your P and C

Note: The P and C executive and our members are all volunteers with the same goal, to provide the best support for our high school and our students. The canteen is still low on regular volunteers and would love to welcome some new helpers. If you are able to help out even for a short time on any day, please contact the friendly canteen team on 3394 0723 or canteen@cavroadshs.eq.edu.au The uniform shop is also happy to welcome new volunteers – please contact uniformshop@cavroadshs.eq.edu.au if you can assist.

Canteen News

We are almost at the end of another term and all is going well in the canteen. Thanks to everyone who has volunteered throughout the month. Also thanks to our dedicated staff who continue to work at 110 percent. We were able to produce a new catering menu. This went down really well for our Japanese visitors. They chose us to do the catering for their farewell party which included students and their host families, a total of about 120 attended. We were asked to include some Aussie foods in the mix and Janelle’s Yam cakes were a hit. The mini pavlovas & lamingtons were also a favourite. We received some great comments from teaching staff on behalf of our international clients.

We have received our invitation to apply for ‘Canteen of the Year’ award from Queensland Association of School Tuckshops (QAST). Thanks to Melinda Groves for helping us with the paperwork. There are other sub awards and we aim to enter those as well. The QAST awards night will be held early in November, so wish us luck.

We would love to see more volunteers join our team! It’s not too late to come and help. Contact Heather or Roberta in the canteen 33940723 or canteen@cavroadshs.eq.edu.au
