Year 8 – 368.4
Year 9 – 294
Year 10 – 286.4
Year 11 – 198
Year 12 – 270

Principal Position

It was with mixed feelings that we farewelled our Principal of 3.5 years, Corrine McMillan. Whilst we will miss Corrine’s leadership, vision and passion for our school we know that she will make a difference in the community and that she has now made the career change that has been tempting her for some time. I thank Corrine for the outstanding contribution that she made to Cav and her service to Queensland state schools during her 22-year career. I also congratulate Corrine on being elected as the member for Mansfield. We know that she will be a strong advocate for her electorate and for public education.

Richard Usher, currently Principal at Mt Gravatt SHS, has been appointed as the new Principal to begin at Cav from the beginning of Term 2.

Congratulations to our 2017 Year 12 Students

We received exceptional results, which were the culmination of dedication, commitment and hard work from not only our students but also our families and our teachers. Special congratulations to our OP1 students:

Sergio Garcia Joya, Laura Gray, Matthew Johnson, Darcy Rothwell and Jasmine Williams.

Year 7 Orientation

As a result of feedback from last year’s orientation, the 2018 Year 7 orientation program was extended to support the transition of our new students. Special thanks to the P and C for the sausage sizzle and inflatable extravaganza. From all reports, our Year 7 students have settled in well. Thank you to parents who attended the Year 7 information evening.

I encourage you to access the school’s website for two informative videos: Steve Griffiths demonstrating how to wear your school backpack and a video made by Griffith University Occupational Therapists on how to use your study planner.

Performing Arts/Music Complex

Late last week I signed off on a Facilities Brief for the construction of a new Performing Arts/Music complex as a replacement for our old hall. The complex includes a performance stage, two drama rooms, four music rooms, one multi media room, staffroom, HOD office, toilets, instrument stores and many other features. This is very exciting news for our community as we have been advocating strongly for a replacement performance hall for a long, long, long time. The likely timeline is demolition of the existing hall in November this year with completion of our new facility by October 2019. I am aware that this is going to result in some major upheaval to our usual events including block exams, graduation, musical and Cav Quest but I know the pain will be worth enduring for the long-term gain. It is beneficial that we are now aware of the timeline and can make alternative arrangements for affected events. Architectural drawings of the new facility will be shared with the community once they are available.

Multi-Purpose Sports Hall

The $6m multi-purpose sports hall containing two basketball courts, four classrooms, staffroom, HOD office and toilets is currently in a second round of community consultation. We are hoping that the building will receive ministerial designation during March and that construction will commence early in April.

Attendance

Research reveals that regular attendance at school is a significant indicator of student success. I ask that you do all you can to ensure your child is at school every day unless they have a genuine reason for not attending. Student attendance will be reviewed regularly this year and contact will be made with you should we have concerns about your child’s attendance. If your child is absent, please do not hesitate to phone the student absence line on 33940736 or email attendance@cavroadshs.eq.edu.au to explain their absence. Our aim is to work with you to maximise the opportunities for success for all students.

Keeping You Informed

We recognise the importance of improving our communication with our school community. Each week you will see ‘The Week Ahead’ on our Twitter and Facebook pages. This will inform you of the upcoming events for the week. Please feel free to share these posts. Our school website also contains significant information about our school.

I look forward to another successful year at ‘The Road’.

Year 12 Chemistry Aspirin Synthesis Excursion

On Monday the 5th of February, fourteen year twelves took the opportunity to conduct an experiment within a real world laboratory. Our inspired Cavroadians travelled to Griffith University - Nathan Campus, to synthesise, purify and characterise aspirin. Students had to follow the laboratory manual and were given a strict instruction to keep all safety goggles, gloves, and lab aprons on at all times whilst in the lab. All dangerous chemicals and equipment were handled with care as expected from our responsible grade 12s. With the help of wonderful demonstrators, the students were able to successfully synthesise, crystallise and re-crystallise aspirin. They compared the purity of the crude and re-crystallised samples by measuring their melting points and collecting data using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) spectroscopy. It was an unique experience to be able to use unseen equipment, methods and tools that would not be available otherwise in a school laboratory.

Overall, our Cavroadians were able to explore different kinds of methods and procedures used within a real world laboratory, conduct an experiment using highly dangerous chemicals and collect data using complex research equipment that would not be seen in a classroom. We hope to have such an opportunity again!

Senior Schooling News

I would like to take the opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Karyn Trapp and I am the Director of Student Achievement (DOSA) Years 11/12. I look forward to working with you and your student this year to ensure they achieve success in their senior programs.

We have started the year by making some changes to students’ programs to ensure that they are on a successful pathway to achieving their QCE (Queensland Certification of Education) which is the certificate that Year 12 students receive on exit to state that they have successfully completed their senior studies.

Over the next few weeks, I will be conducting the Overall Position (OP) estimate interviews with the Year 12 OP eligible students. The purpose of the interview is to provide the students with their OP estimate and strategies they can apply to their studies this year to enable them to achieve an OP in the desired 1-15 range to gain entry into University.

Tutoring Sessions 2018

This year, many of our faculties are offering free tutorial sessions after school. We strongly encourage students to attend the tutoring sessions for the relevant subjects. It is an excellent opportunity for students to receive extra assistance from our staff to help them with their homework or assignment work or prepare for exams.

Skills for Future Work

The below link directs you to an article that is a great read, as it emphasises the skills we need to have in order to prepare for the future of work. It discusses the importance of learning to learn rather than just the acquisition of knowledge. This will be a great read to have with your son and daughter as they prepare for their next step in their career.

https://amp.heraldsun.com.au/news/special-features/news-in-education/vce/these-are-the-skills-experts-say-will-be-the-most-valuable-in-2020-and-beyond/news-story/6059f1f280a23405a2a4b7a005b5fa18

Cyber Safety

Cyber bullying is the use of technology to bully a person or group with the intent to hurt them socially, psychologically or even physically.

https://esafety.gov.au/esafety-information/esafety-issues/cyberbullying

We are all aware of the effects of bullying on young people and are bombarded by reports in the media of events that detrimentally impact on the mental health of young people. We also know that cyber bullying can be unrelenting - it can begin as soon as you turn your device on. In the event you never turn it off the bullying never stops; there is no reprieve, no break, unless you take action.

Schools, parents and the community all have a part to play in minimising the frequency and effect of cyberbullying.

The Department of Education disables social media websites and You Tube between the hours of 8 and 4pm. It also offers courses and provides information for students and the community about how to be CyberSafe.

Blue Coat filtering blocks inappropriate sites 24 hrs a day. This is updated regularly as a result of feedback from schools and staff. In addition, at Cavendish Road State High School we have the means to be able to block sites and games which are deemed inappropriate for student use.

Schools recognise that it is not just about blocking sites but that it is also about educating people about the appropriate use of digital devices.

The school’s pastoral care program delivers a respectful relationships program for students whilst this year the school will also provide an information night to assist parents to act protectively in regard to bullying.

The Office of the eSafety Commissioner provides a wealth of information, resources and support for both schools and parents. Cavendish Road State High School encourages all parents to be aware of strategies that they can use to support their children. Please access the following sites for assistance.

Legal Studies

Year 12 Legal Studies Conference

On Friday 9th February, our Year 12 Legal Studies students attended the Griffith University Legal Studies Conference. At the conference, the students were privileged to listen to an exceptionally inspirational address from Debbie Kilroy OAM. Ms Kilroy shared her experiences with the criminal justice system in Queensland and gave the students advice as to how they can make a difference in the community with a career as a lawyer. The students also attended a variety of information sessions which examined a number of aspects related to the legal system, including family law, animal cruelty and tenant rights. It was a thoroughly enjoyable and informative conference which will greatly add value to what our students will study in the classroom.

Year 11 Legal Studies Court Excursion

On Thursday 15 February, our Year 11 Legal Studies students attended an excursion to the Brisbane District and Supreme Courts. The students were extremely privileged to start the day with a Judge talk delivered by His Honour Judge Brian G Devereaux SC. His Honour was very generous with his time and answered many student questions regarding his role as a Judge and his insight into the operation of the courts. Following the Judge talk, the students observed civil and criminal trials in both the District and Supreme Courts. The observations allowed the students to connect classroom theory to reality with respect to the types of trials, operation of the jury and court personnel. Overall, the excursion was an enjoyable and thought-provoking experience for all and is sure to inspire and leave a lasting impression on our young legal students.

Year 7 Artefact Viewing

Eager faces, murmurs of excitement, and an artefact that could be a million years old! Over two days in week two all Year 7 Humanities students attended an artefact viewing during their Humanities lesson as part of their introduction to the study of archaeology. Cav Road’s Humanities department organised with the University of Queensland to have 16 historical artefacts displayed in the school hall. This provided students with the opportunity to gently touch, hold and sketch the artefacts as they investigated the civilisations of which the artefacts had originally belonged. Students discussed their ideas and acted as mature historians in training.

Student quote from the experience:

“It was really exciting to see and touch things from such a long time ago. My favourite artefact was actually the newest one which had a crystal blade, it almost looked magical! Overall I think everyone really enjoyed the day.” Sian Felton- Twomey 7J

German News

Guten Tag – Herzlich Willkommen!!

Welcome to German for 2018. We are looking forward to a busy, exciting and rewarding year in this subject. This year we have three German teachers working with the German cohort: Frau Gavranich, Frau Gallagher, and we welcome back Frau Pettersen from her maternity leave.

Outstanding results

Congratulations to the Year 12 German students of 2017. I was recently able to see the data generated by these students, and was not surprised by how well they did. The German students’ results as a subject cohort, were first class. Language students were also over represented in impressive OP scores. Language study is a very viable option for students who desire an opportunity to attend university.

Subject selection for 2019.

It is never too early for students to begin thinking about subject selection. Particularly for Year 9 2019. The current Year 8 German students will study German for only 6 more months, either in Semester 1 or 2. The Year 8 cohort this year is very strong, with some outstanding results achieved in Year 7 thus far. The languages department would very much like to see as many of these Year 8 students continue German into Year 9 and beyond. Feel free to contact me if you would like any further information regarding subject selection for Year 9.

Study tips

There are many ways that your child can practise/improve their language skills. Free online programs or aps such as Languages Online or Duolingo are very useful. Watching programs in German that are downloaded or subtitled is another useful strategy. Year 9 – 12 students have begun a wider reading program. This mirrors initiatives to increase vocabulary and literacy in English through wider reading.

Scholarships

At present there is an opportunity for students in years 11 and 12 to participate in the annual Swiss/Australian Students exchange programme. Please contact me if you would like further information. Similarly, Frau Gav has current information about SAGSA exchange programmes. Feel free to contact her regarding this opportunity.

Finally

This year, we will have several excursion planned in this subject: to the German Club, Oktoberfest and German film festival. We are also looking at a company to ascertain the viability of a trip to Germany. Keep an eye out for more details, during the year.

Dankeschön

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is an exciting youth development program and is about to be offered to students at Cav Road! The Award is for people aged between 14 and 25 and comprises three levels – Bronze, Silver or Gold. Each level involves participating in a Skill, Adventurous Journey, Physical Recreation and Community Service element to help develop well-rounded individuals. The students receive the chance to choose their own activities and set their own goals to complete their chosen Award level with structured guidance by qualified volunteers and Award leaders.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award provides participants with an opportunity to get involved in something unique. They will develop new skills, explore new places and meet new friends. The program is tailored for students 14 and over, with the benefit for students to earn credits towards the Queensland Certificate of Education in their senior years. The Awards are increasingly recognised by tertiary institutions and can even help participants with securing a job.

For Cav Road students, it is easy to get started as a participant. We are hoping to make this a lasting and fruitful program here at Cav Road, so please contact Mitch Evans (mevan237@eq.edu.au) or Kate Niland (knila1@eq.edu.au) to express interest and find out more about the benefits of commencing the Duke of Edinburgh Award in 2018. Further information is also available at the link below.

Japanese News

Year 7 Students

Year 7 students have been working very hard in their Japanese classes to master the reading and writing of the hiragana script. Ask your student to show you how they write in Japanese. Also, remember that it takes regular practice for students to become adept at using this new alphabet. Ask your student to show you some of the online hiragana games they have been using and encourage them to play these games regularly at home.

Scholarship News and the Search for “STEAM” Skills in Job Candidates

A recent article in the Financial Review (10-11 February, 2017) highlighted the growing emphasis on recruiting university graduates with a greater diversity in skills and knowledge. “It’s all about having a wide skill set rather than a specific set of knowledge. More often than not, employers like the core degree to be supplemented with non-core subjects, especially from the arts”. “Psychology, history and languages are valued even for students going into high-end auditing or engineering jobs. In shorthand, STEM has become STEAM. Arts is being added to the core science, technology and mathematics units at university”. “

The Department of Education and Training also recognises the importance of studying languages in combination with traditional STEM subjects. It has released details of two scholarships for Year 10 and Year 11 students of Japanese who also study STEM subjects. The 2018 Year 11 Queensland Student Study Tour to Saitama and the Year 10 2018 STEM Student Program to Hiroshima and Kyoto are programs targeted at high-performing state high school students. The successful students will be immersed in the Japanese language and culture through home stay and experience how STEM subjects are taught internationally.

Also, Year 11 students are invited to apply for the yearly Iwasaki Sangyo Prize, which offers the opportunity to study at school in Kagoshima for four weeks in November- December 2018.

Winners of these scholarships will be selected through a competitive application process by Department of Education and Training (DET) officials. Year 10 and 11 students should contact their class teacher for further details.

2018 Cavendish Road Study Tour to Japan

There are sufficient expressions of interest from Japanese students in Years 10 – 12 to run the study tour in December 2018. Information regarding the final itinerary and cost will be distributed in the coming weeks with a parent meeting expected to be held in Week 7. A non-refundable deposit of $400 will then be due by the end of Week 9, Term 1 to secure a place on the tour.

We are also seeking expressions of interest from families to host an Omiya Koryo Senior High School student for approximately 4 to 6 weeks in Term 3. The exact dates are yet to be confirmed. Students who host an Omiya Koryo student for this long-term exchange are then eligible to study for a four week period at Omiya Koryo in December 2018. Please contact the Japanese Coordinator, Joy Balfour jbalf7@eq.edu.au, to register your interest in hosting and whether you would prefer to host a male or female student.

What’s happening in your Resource Centre?

Welcome back to students and staff for the 2018 school year and a warm welcome to all our new Cavroadians. Come in and check out some great books this year!

The Resource Centre (RC) is an open, flexible and supportive learning environment for the school community. We nurture, inspire and celebrate the importance of reading - for pleasure AND information.

Our physical Resource Centre collection is extensive in both nonfiction/factual material and fiction - many of our students are keen readers, and we aim to include a wide variety of stories and novels to meet their needs and encourage all to experience the joy and value of reading. Students are welcome to suggest items to purchase, as we constantly add to our collection. Over the years, there have been many popular titles put forward by students, which have been enjoyed by others.

QParents

Students will be heading into their first assessment pieces over the next couple of weeks. Parents with access to QParents will be able to see what their student has due and when. The Student Handbook (diary) is a great source of information for parents to assist their child with managing their time, forward planning and with respect to school policies. In relation to QParents, all parents who do not have access, have been emailed an invitation to join Qparents. Please ensure you have updated your contact/email details with the school if they have changed. QParents is accessible through a web browser or the QParents App.

BYOD Laptops

By now all students in Years 10 or 12 should have joined their laptop to the Cavendish Road State High School network. Information on how to do this along with other helpful documents is located on the Cavendish Road State High School website.

https://cavroadshs.eq.edu.au/Curriculum/Subjectsandprograms/Pages/1-to-1-Laptop-Program---BYOD.aspx

Students who are having difficulties accessing digital resources such as Jac Plus, other software or Apps should see the school IT Technicians located in D10 for assistance.

BYOD Laptop User Agreement

The school has instructed that all students using a BYOD device within the school must return the completed 2018 BYOD Laptop User agreement. Signed forms must be returned to the finance office first and then the on-boarding agreement brought with the laptop to D10 for connection. A 2018 User Agreement form must be completed and returned regardless of whether this has been completed in previous years.

The BYOD User Agreement is an important document that acknowledges that, students, parents and the school all must commit and agree to rules and procedures that foster the positive use of technologies in the school environment.

Gaming at school

This month a number of students have run out of data within the first 2 weeks. Each student is granted 2GB of download per month. Please speak with your student and remind them that while at school use the laptop for schoolwork not gaming.

Network upgrade

We are very happy to announce that part 1 of the school network upgrade has been completed. The plan is to have the whole school running on 10GB fiber for the start of term 2. This will then link into the new sport hall.

Drama News

Welcome everyone to an exciting new year within the Drama Department. We have begun with a bang already viewing live theatre at QPAC “Black is the new White”. We have an exciting year of musical theatre with opportunities to attend “American Idiot” and “Aladdin”. Students will be bringing home expressions of interest in order to attend these productions.

Senior Drama

All senior students have begun term 1 curriculum and have viewed live theatre. Year 12 students are currently working on Political Theatre with Bertolt Brecht and Year 11 students are studying Realism Theatre. Both groups attended the performance at QPAC viewing the extremely funny production of “Black is the New White”. This was an outstanding production and all students will be working on completing written assessment.

Live Theatre at QPAC Playhouse Theatre – “Black is the New White”

Thirty-two senior drama students attended this production [our first for the year]. I was incredibly impressed with their smart attire and prompt arrival at the venue. Thank you parents/guardians for using the drop off and pick up point, I do appreciate your attention to time.

In-Class Workshop with Australian Acting Academy

Week 4 has been very busy with year 12 students viewing live theatre and participating in two in-class workshops on Political Theatre. Brendan Glandville from the Australian Acting Academy [who also manages our Drama Club after school] created an extensive 2 ½ hour workshop to immerse these students into the history, philosophy and dramatic content of this highly effective and educational form of theatre. The workshops were active and engaging and the outcomes will assist students to prepare for assessment in the next couple of weeks.

Hand Hygiene

The following has been adapted from Hand Hygiene Australia: http://www.hha.org.au/ForConsumers/FactSheets.aspx

Everyone has germs. Our bodies are covered with germs that help us stay healthy. In addition to the germs that are usually present on our skin, we also pick up germs from contact with other people or objects in our surroundings. These germs are easy to pick up and transfer. In this way, they can cause you, or others, to get sick. Although people usually think that germs are spread through the air, the fact is that germs are most easily spread through hand contact.

One of the best ways to stop the spread of germs is to wash OR decontaminate your hands.

Washing hands helps to physically remove germs by friction, and to rinse them down the drain.

Decontaminating hands reduces the amount of germs present on hands through the use of special alcohol based preparations, in the form of solutions, gels or foams.

Alcohol based preparations have two distinct advantages over soap and water:

  1. They kill many more germs
  2. They are less drying to your skin

While alcohol based preparations reduce the germs on your hands, they cannot remove visible soil or contamination. It is always important to WASH hands with soap and water any time they are visibly dirty.

When should you wash your hands with soap and water?

Adults and children should wash their hands:

  • When hands are visibly dirty
  • Before you eat
  • Before you prepare food items
  • After touching raw meats like chicken or beef
  • After contact with any body fluids like blood, urine or vomit
  • After changing infant or adult nappies
  • After touching animals or pets
  • After blowing your nose or sneezing
  • After going to the toilet

When can you use alcohol based hand rubs?

  • Adults and children can rub hands:
  • For routine cleaning of hands anytime they are visibly clean
  • If you have contact with contaminated objects in the environment eg. dirty tissues/nappies
  • Before and after you care for or have contact with someone who is very sick, very old or very young
  • Whenever you want to decontaminate your hands

Yours in good health and wellbeing,

Regina Tyson

Netball Academy News

As always, the beginning of Term 1 means both sad and exciting times for the Netball Academy. We have farewelled the previous year’s grade 10 students, and feel their absence at the beginning of the new year, but we also have the great pleasure of welcoming a new bunch of fresh-faced Year 7s to the Academy. The Netball Academy is growing every year, with twenty-five Year 7 students joining the team in 2018.

The new Year 7s were joined by the rest of the Academy in our annual Netball Academy Afternoon Tea last week. The girls battled the heat to play a massive game of Capture the Flag out on the oval after school, and were later joined by families for afternoon tea. Special thanks to our Year 9 and 10 Netball Academy class for catering!

Many of the Year 9 and 10 girls were also involved in the Netball Academy’s Fiji Tour at the end of last year. We entered 2 teams in the International Netball Festival, where our girls came up against teams from Fiji, New Zealand and Australia. Special mention must go to our Cav Road Black team, who came 3rd in the 18 & under division, despite most of the girls being only 14 or 15. Congratulations also to Cara Campbell and Francesca Martin, who received the Spirit of the Tournament awards for their respective teams. Of course, in addition to playing heaps of netty, we also got to explore the island and get involved in heaps of awesome activities, including mud baths, an island cruise, a visit to a Fijian village, snorkelling, ziplining, hair-braiding, fire dancing, Secret Santa shopping and our very own Survivor Fiji!

Next week, the Netball Academy will travel to Brisbane Netball Association to contest the first Super 7 tournament of the year. This will be the first chance for our Year 7s to compete as part of the Netball Academy, so we are excited!

Parents and Citizens’ Association

Parents and Citizens’ (P and C) meetings are held on the third Tuesday of the month from 7pm in the Resource Centre (enter Gate 1). The March meeting is our annual AGM.

At the AGM on Tuesday 20th March, all P and C Executive positions are “spilled” and re-elected through a formal process. If you are interested in taking on an Executive role and would like to know more, please contact us for more information.

In particular, we are looking to fill the following vacancies:

Vice-President Operations (new position) - - to act as a communication link between the P and C Executive and the canteen and uniform shop, ideal for someone who has some school-hours availability as well as knowledge and experience in small business

Minutes Secretary (current secretary moving roles) - this does not take a lot of time and is a great introduction to the P and C Executive

Assistant Treasurer (new position) – working with our current Treasurer to learn the ropes and share the workload.

We are a great team and would love to have some new and enthusiastic people join us.

What’s new in the P and C

The P and C has been very busy this year, already building on our successes from last year. Some highlights of the past 12 months are:

  • The Canteen again won awards for their menu and this time also Volunteer of the Year.
  • The booking system was introduced for the uniform shop busy “back to school” period.
  • A welcome morning tea was provided to Year 7 parents on the first day of school (very well received).
  • The P and C contributed funds towards a “Fun Day” as part of the Orientation week for Year 7s which allowed for the hire of inflatable activities and a sausage sizzle (very well received).

Watch this space – we are planning even bigger and better things in 2018!

Thank you

The P and C would like to sincerely thank all our staff and volunteers for their hard work over the past year. The canteen and uniform shop convenors and volunteers have done a fantastic job all year. The musical events organised by the Cav Road Instrumental Music Support (CRIMS) sub-committee and fundraising events by the CRIMS and Australian Education Program (AEP) USA Tour sub-committees have all been very successful and enjoyable. Thank you to everyone who has contributed some time to assist.

Uniform Shop

Madonna, her staff and volunteers have again done a great job and survived the “uniform rush”. Many of the out of stock items have now arrived with some still on the way. Please ensure your student checks the notices each day if they are waiting on a uniform item to arrive.

Canteen News

Welcome to Cav. Road Year 7’s and all our new and old students. Hope you have had a chance to come and check out the Canteen. We are open for Breakfast and Lunch Orders from 8.00a.m. Each morning…avoid delays getting your lunch so come and place an order and we’ll have it ready for you. We have lots of wonderful choices on offer with our Summer Menu. You can follow the link to the school web site to see the menu.

We’ve had a really busy start to the new year but don’t be deterred by the queue at first break, the line moves very quickly and once you are inside the air-con is great to cool you down while you make your choice.

A few prices have had to go up this year but saying that we have tried to keep prices as low as possible. We will be trying out some new options for breakfast this term… Mini Breakfast Wrap – (Egg, spinach and cheese scrambled on a soft mini tortilla) $3.50; and the immediately popular Brekky Meal Box on Fridays (Poached egg, baked beans, bacon, roasted cherry tomatoes, mini hash brown and toast) $6.00.

A big, big thankyou to all of our new volunteers. We are very excited to welcome you to our team and hope you all enjoy your time with us!!!

In Touch

Hello and welcome to the first addition of the 2018 ‘In Touch’. This section of the school newsletter helps us to recognise and celebrate team and individual successes of all students in the Touch Football Academy. In addition, this segment will be an opportunity for me to keep you updated with events, training days and special occasions that our Touch students are involved in.

We are super excited to welcome thirty-three Year 7 students into the program (the most ever). So far, they have been introduced to lessons of game play and some very tough fitness sessions. All have been very impressive in demonstrating resilience and true potential by stepping up to the challenge and running hard. We are looking forward to developing each individual and helping them achieve their touch goals this year.

Congratulations to Mitch Williams and Makaela Cook who are our 2018 Touch Academy leaders. Mitch and Makaela have been hard at work liaising with one of our partners Inferno by designing some wicked new jerseys for us. Our new jerseys are reversible, so we get 2 designs to play in. Uniforms are expected within 6 weeks, I think you will be very impressed.

Mitch and Makaela

During the Christmas break many of our Touch Academy students played in a range of touch football events and carnivals. The first carnival of the holidays was the New Zealand Maori Touch National, which was held in Rotorua, NZ. Mitchell Williams and Kohl Beazley travelled to NZ and played for the Under 17 South Queensland Maori Touch Team. The boys ended up winning beating Ngati Raukawa by 2 touchdowns in the Grand Final. Congratulations!

While back in OZ, the All Nations Cultural Diversity Touch Football Competition was being played at Coomera. At this competition Touch players from U8s to Senior Mixed play some touch while celebrating cultural diversity and friendship. The highlight of the carnival is on finals day where All Nations stop playing footy, and come together to perform traditional dances and storytelling in front of each other. It’s a wonderful experience to watch everyone enjoy and celebrate diversity and traditions that we wouldn’t usually get exposed to. Over 60 of our touch academy students and parents participated, and played for countries like PNG, New Zealand, Indigenous Australia, Australia, The Philippines and Scotland.

This year we yet again strengthen Cavendish Road Touch in our local community. Our partnership with The Storm touch club and Brisbane Metropolitan Touch continues to be strengthened. We have many more students coaching junior teams and nearly all of our students that completed the level one referee course last Nov have started to referee. We also have two girls teams playing on a Thursday night – The U13s Foo Fighters and The U15s – Keen as Mustard and a U13s boys team – Rage Against the Machine on a Friday night. All teams have just started playing and we are looking forward to seeing each individual improve and enjoy the sport that brings us together. I’d like to thank all students involved in these programs. I always receive such positive feedback from parents whose children are coached by our touch academy students and from administrators for the professionalism our kids demonstrate.

Dates to Remember

All students in the academy should have received a Touch calendar for the year (if you haven’t please contact me). This calendar includes all touch dates that our students can be a part of. It illustrates the school carnivals, including representative dates, club dates for competitions at Whites Hill (BMTA) and representative pathways either Mustangs or Cobras (older students).

Cross Country 2018

With another new year comes another Cross Country season and it has started with a bang here at Cav Road. Training has now begun with students flocking to trainings every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning from 7:15am. All the runners have been working incredibly hard in preparation for the upcoming Inter-House and District Cross Country carnivals. The goal of the training is to provide students with a base level of fitness that enables them to maximise their personal performance at the Inter-House carnival, as well as, teaching the students racing techniques and how to work together as a team in preparation to bring home the District Championship early in Term 2. Students do not need to sign up in order to come to trainings. All students are welcome even if they just want to come and improve their fitness with training continuing every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 7:15am. Cannot wait to see everyone there!

Chaplaincy Committee

Chaplaincy plays an important part in supporting student wellbeing at Cavendish Road State High School. Our ‘Chappy’ Margita Downey is passionate about helping students feel supported and listened to, especially students who find it difficult to fit in at school. Chappy Margita loves to run various programs for students including a breakfast club, Chappy Chill Time for Year 7s, the Drumbeat program, and she attends camps with the students as well. She is supported by Chaplaincy Committee (LCC) which is made up of a dedicated team of parents, local community members, school teachers and administration staff, as well as our regular and one-off donations to Cavendish Road State High School Chaplaincy via Scripture Union which partially funds the Chaplaincy Program.

Chaplaincy could not be possible without fundraising and the LCC team. Would you be able to help? We are seeking new members of the Chaplaincy Committee (LCC) which meets approximately every 6 weeks in the term. You may also like to consider giving a one-off or regular donation to Chaplaincy. For more information please contact LCC Secretary, Emma Nicholls by email enich67@eq.edu.au.
