Principal’s Report
Creativity, Cleverness and Skill
Creativity, Cleverness and Skill have been key attributes of the mission of State schools for some time and none less so than on display at Cavendish Road SHS last Friday evening at the annual “Arts on the Green”. The talent on display across all strands of the Arts Department was first class and credit to Head of Department, Mrs Tippett and her exceptional staff. In the preceding weeks I noted the standard of Music presented on the night was testament to student practice and the lead by Mr Lashmar and Instrumental Music staff. Art works remain on display in our Resource Centre. Our school’s Creative Arts is an area I would like to see develop further and the construction of our new PAC (Performing Arts Centre) to be sited on the existing main hall site will be delivered for the start of the 2020 school year, or earlier, and will be just the ticket for giving our ‘arts smarts’ students the facility to stretch their talents.
Positive Education
Positive Education in schools is being developed at Cavendish Road to provide ‘wrap around’ education for our young people. School culture is often talked about in terms of its absence or presence and how strong it is perceived to be. Cav. Road has a strong culture of performance, but also of belonging and pride amongst students, staff and parents alike.
I have identified this not only as a quality for our school, but fundamental to our continuing success and performance of our students. It needs to be explicit, modelled and taught. Parents and carers will know from my very first newsletter I am a great believer in, and committed to student welfare that builds life skills and resilience in our students. The world is unfortunately tough, and we would want to protect our children as much as possible, but equally important is to provide skills of managing life generally.
Cavendish Road is a great school, with great outcomes and by and large a happy place. We provide many things that offer opportunity and challenge to the individual. With high performance comes pressure to perform and often overly so by a young person who wants to succeed in a sea of success. Every child deserves to succeed. I know some of our students struggle to keep up while others shine beyond their own expectation.
This program is not really a program. It is a way of thinking based upon neuroscience research that we can train ourselves, and behave towards others in our conversations and interactions to promote all the good qualities of feeling one belongs, being supported, to take on challenge and crucially how to support others by thinking and acting positively; challenge negative mindsets and provide opportunity to make positive contributions to the school community.
This is a community wide process and starts with school leaders being trained, staff and students in phases and usually a three year journey. At every step, parents are informed and invited into the ‘positive thinking’ mindset as partners in looking after our young people while they are being schooled. Ms Johnston, Associate Principal and Ms Gardiner, Deputy Principal (Wellbeing) are the first to be trained.
If you would like to take a simple mindset activity, click on the link below:

Student Support
Student Support is a key element of education delivery and for it to be effective this term we are introducing further measures to keep, particularly our younger students, who become distracted from the ‘main game’ of learning, by using restorative justice as a complement or alternative to natural consequence for misbehaviour. Good discipline is essential to keep our social and personal behaviour standards very high. I have a view that if we get the thinking “right” I will have to use less the powers to suspend students for some of the major misbehaviours of disobedience, misconduct, or conduct prejudicial to the good order and management of the school. Such students will be required to take part in a 3 or 5 day program of tailored support and intervention to re-teach expectations and how they can commit to what that means in practice for them and for the benefit of the broader school community. I would expect that if those new behaviours are embedded we may very well have students behaving better generally and not missing valuable school days. That is a good thing for all concerned.
Students will access this support and intervention after our recent review of our school’s Responsible Behaviour Plan for Students is endorsed and re-published on our website. Once endorsed, this inclusion to our student management practice will be implemented from week 6 this term and will operate only on my referral. Ms Gardiner is managing this innovation that includes the targeted services from our student services and support team that maintains student connection to their learning and schooling. The aim is not only to have students learn anew and re-think their behaviours but to ensure that school days are not lost which is a consequence of being suspended from school. Very serious misbehaviour will still be dealt with by consideration of suspension from school as there remain some things completely inappropriate and against community standards.
Care and respect
Care and respect are two key values I try to adhere to and I wonder how we model and remind students of these. As humans we necessarily default to the negative. The amygdala is an ancient part of the brain that is all about survival. For example, if I don’t like something, fear something, or someone, self-preservation kicks in. I ask parents to make a routine, (and carefully because teenagers will ‘twig’ to the game very quickly) to ask your child a couple of key questions to get those positive thoughts out there. Such as, ‘what is one (nice/supportive/kind) thing you did for someone else today without them asking? Did someone do something for you today that you appreciated? And did you tell them? We can fill our heads with negative or positive thoughts that shape our attitude, our demeanour and our perspective on life. We have to be in a positive place to learn best.
Welcome Ms Shauna McVie
Welcome to Ms Shauna McVie who started with us last week as our new and third Guidance Officer. Ms McVie is recently qualified and we hope to be able to keep her on staff indefinitely as part of our amazing GO team. Ms McVie is working notably with Ms Gardiner in supporting our younger students but will have a hands on approach with the wide range of Guidance services with Mr Ross and Ms Niland.

Year 10 Update: Subject Selection Evening, SET-Plan and Interviews
Introduction of the new Senior Assessment and Tertiary Entrance System in 2019
This system includes a model that uses school based assessment and common external assessment; processes that strengthen the quality and comparability of school based assessment and a move away from the Overall Position (OP) rank to an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR).
Staff at Cavendish State High School are well underway with their preparations for 2019.
The QCAA website provides useful information and hopefully answers some questions that you may have:
https://www.qcaa.qld.edu.au/senior/new-snr-assessment-te/resources-faqs
The following information provides a snap shot of how we are preparing our Year 10 students as they transition into Year 11.
Career Education Program
The Year 10 Careers Education Program has commenced on Fridays period 1 during PSC. During this time, students learn more about themselves, their interests, skills and areas of work that may interest them. Each week, students are expected to complete a number of online modules. Class teachers work with students to ensure they know which modules need to be completed during the lesson. In order to be ready for SET-Plan these modules must be finished. This program concludes with a one page Career Snapshot that will be presented along with their SET-Plan, at the SET-Plan and Subject Selection Interview the week of 27 August.
Subject Selection Evening (Monday 20 August 6:30-8:30 pm)
The Year 11 (2019) Subject Selection Evening is scheduled for Monday 20 August 6:30-8:30 pm in the Hall. Due to large numbers, the Year 10 cohort and evening will be spilt into two sessions rotating through: a) an ATAR presentation by QLD Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) in the Hall and HOD/subject discussions in the Resource Centre. We will require all parents/carers to book through SOBs for this process with more information to be advised as we come closer to the event. All students and parents/care givers are expected to attend as subject selection handbooks, subject selection forms and subject and new ATAR information will be provided on this evening. This information and documents is vital in guiding students and parents through the subject selection process for Year 11 2019.
https://www.qtac.edu.au/atar-my-path/atar
Subject Selection Forms will need to be completed by the week of 27 August for Subject Selection Interviews.
Senior Education Training Plan (16 July – 24 August)
To assist Year 10 students to plan courses of education and training through the next two years, all students will also be required to develop a Senior Education and Training Plan (SET-Plan). This course is run here at school over the next six weeks and prepares students in selecting appropriate six subjects for year 11. SET–P provides students with a personal learning plan to guide their future career pathway and is designed to build on each student’s strengths and provide them with direction for the future career. My advice is to talk with your students over the next six weeks and ask them to show you their individual SET-P progress and develop online in OneSchool. Education Queensland mandates this initiative and all students are expected to complete a SET-P.
Subject Selection Interviews (The week of 27 August)
The SET-P process culminates with individual Subject Selection Interviews. Trained Guidance Officers and members of the Administration team will conduct these here at school. Each interview will be approximately 20 minutes. Every Year 10 student must attend in order to enter his or her pre-prepared subject selections into OneSchool. With the exception of the interview appointment time, Year 10 students attend regular timetabled classes on these dates. Parents are also welcome to attend this interview.
Students will require their SET-P to be completed and a subject selection form signed and approved by parents for the interview. They will receive a copy of their SET-P with intended subject choices to take home for parental/guardian approval. Students must attend their interview regardless of their intended pathway in 2018.
Letters confirming interview appointment times will be provided to students by week six.
Any questions or comments can be directed to Mr Paul Cox (Deputy Principal), Ms Kate Niland, (Guidance Officer) or Mr Paul Ross (Guidance Officer) on 3394 0777.
We look forward to assisting your family plan for your child’s successful future.

Beyond Broncos Program
The Beyond the Broncos who like to welcome back to school all students and staff for term 3!
The Beyond the Broncos staff have been busy over the school holidays with our inaugural Beyond the Broncos Leadership Camp. Cavendish Road SHS’s own Harry Lavelle was fortunate enough to participate in the camp that took place on the Gold Coast over the school holidays (July 8th -11th). Harry was involved in number of leadership, cultural activities and heard from a number of prominent Indigenous Australians including Rugby League commentator Yvonne Sampson and the Hon. Linda Burney MP and artist Delvene Cockatoo-Collins. Students were also lucky enough to attend the Brisbane Broncos vs Gold Coast Titans at CBUS stadium.
Once again, the Beyond the Broncos will be invited to attend our respect workshop hosted by Beyond the Broncos Ambassadors, Scott Prince and Justin Hodges. This workshop aims to promote and model respectful, positive attitudes and behaviour amongst its participants. Cavendish Rd SHS’ Respect workshop will be held on July 30th at 1:40pm (session 2).
Again, Beyond the Broncos students are encouraged to achieve 90% physical attendance in term 3. Students who do so will be again rewarded. This terms reward will be announced at the Term 3 Respect workshop.
Congratulations to all students who achieved 90% physical attendance in term 2 these students will be rewarded with a Beyond the Broncos jacket. We would like to invite staff to congratulate students who successfully achieved last term!
This term we have a number of Beyond the Broncos volunteer tutors commencing their placements at Cavendish Rd SHS. Volunteer tutors assist in providing one-on-one academic support in literacy and numeracy to Beyond the Broncos students. It is their interactions, support and mentoring that is crucial in supporting our students’ success at school. We would hope that all staff and students at Cav Rd make them feel welcome.
The Beyond the Broncos would like to thank the staff and students at Cavendish Rd SHS for their ongoing support.

Kokoda Challenge 2018
Cavendish Road State High School has a long and proud history of participating in the Kokoda Challenge. This year was no exception, with the school entering teams in both the Brisbane and Gold Coast events. The Kokoda Challenge events are recognised as some of the toughest endurance courses in the country. It is hard to describe the demands that this challenge place upon individuals and teams, but it is certainly a challenge that changes lives forever. The character building and life experiences that take place within a supportive environment are invaluable.
This year, Cavendish Road had 82 students and 21 leaders take part in the event. Of our school’s 82 participants, 79 completed the challenge they had set themselves, whilst three students pushed themselves to their limit until injury or illness forced them to retire from the race.
The school’s participation would not be possible without the dedication of our leaders, teachers and parents. As always, for any successful event, there is a huge effort that takes place behind the scenes, from the efforts of the school’s administrative staff through to the team support crews who keep everything going while the teams are out on the track. We appreciate these contributions and thank you all for your commitment to our students. We very much appreciate the ongoing support of the school P&C to help with the funding of the shirts.
As always, the students and teachers from the mighty “Cav Rd” were outstanding ambassadors for the school and were an excellent example of the values of the challenge - courage, endurance, mateship, sacrifice.

NAIDOC Week activities at Cav Road
NAIDOC Week is an important week for Indigenous people as it is a time to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, and is an opportunity to recognise the contributions that Indigenous Australians make to our country and our society.
This year’s NAIDOC theme was ‘Because of Her, We Can’. As pillars of our society, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have played – and continue to play - active and significant roles in our community. They have fought and continue to fight, for justice, equal rights, access to education, employment and to maintain and celebrate our culture, language, music and art. They demand a better life, greater opportunities and equal rights - for us, our families and our people. They are our mothers, our elders, our grandmothers, our aunties, our sisters and our daughters.
To celebrate this year’s theme, our Cav Road Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students created posters that paid tribute to the important women in their lives. On Monday, 23 July we hosted a morning tea to share these tributes with our families, community elders and staff.

During that week students and staff also participated in our annual Indigenous students v. teacher game of Buroinjin. This was a ball game played by the Kabi Kabi people of southern Queensland – the game was played with a ball made of kangaroo skin which was called a ‘buroinjin’.
Thank you to all students and staff involved in making our Cav Road NAIDOC celebrations a success!

Ski Trip

During the second week of the school holidays, forty-three Year 11 and 12 students and six teachers headed down to Perisher for the 2018 Cav Road Ski Trip. After 18 hours on the bus, we arrived at the Station Resort in Jindabyne where students collected their skis and snowboards and made our way up to Smiggins for our first lesson and afternoon of skiing and boarding. The weather conditions leading up to the trip had been favourable and we arrived to clear blue skies and good snow. After a few hours on the slopes, we headed back down to our accommodation for a shower and buffet dinner. Already there were stories of stacks and spills, but the smiles on everyone’s faces showed that they all enjoyed the first day.
Each morning students had lessons at Smiggins, where they continued to progress their learning of skiing and snowboarding. After the lessons, students had the opportunity to explore the other areas including, Mt Perisher, Back Perisher Mt, Guthega Peak and Mt Blue Cow. With nearly all lifts and runs open, we were able to ski between each mountain or make use of the shuttle bus and ski tube. The clear blue skies and good snow remained all week, making it some of the best conditions for early July in a number of years. At the conclusion of each day students would be sharing stories, videos and photos of their progression. For some, it was conquering the T Bar or chair lift without falling off or perhaps the jump they went over, and for others it was the stacks they had. Regardless of their daily adventures, the conversations were full of excitement and laughter.
All forty-three students represented Cavendish Rd SHS in an exemplary manner and their behaviour for the duration of the trip was of the highest standard. I would like to thank the other five staff members who gave up a week of their holidays to attend the trip. Without their support, we would be unable to continue offering such experiences. Therefore, a big thank you must go to Mr Caruso, Miss Amos, Miss Signorini, Ms Ryan and Miss McCreary.
Planning is already underway for the 2019 Ski Trip, with the possibility of heading to New Zealand for the first time. More information and expressions of interest will be advertised in the student notices, and distributed later this term.
After such a successful and fun week, I am looking forward to the 2019 trip already.

Junten High School Study Tour

Early this term, 23 year 11 students from Junten High School spent two weeks at Cavendish Road SHS immersed in our science programs. Junten is a “Super Global” school from Tokyo, and they have a particular focus on engaging with science in English-speaking countries. As part of their program, they buddied with year 9 Academy of Science students. Their collaboration together involved a visit to various Hastings Point ecosystems, from which they created educational science videos about the organisms they found there, spoken by Cav and Junten students in their partners’ language! The Junten students also immersed themselves in senior science classes and spent three days at Griffith University performing chemistry experiments which included synthesising aspirin and performing forensic tests.
The Junten students were able to immerse themselves in some uniquely Australian experiences including visiting Hastings Point and Dreamworld, playing Indigenous games and eating Big Jim’s chips! Our Academy students had an amazing experience also, and after working through the awkwardness induced by language and cultural barriers, were able to engage closely with the Junten students and create some special memories.
Thanks to Maria Masselos and Lesley Huxley for their work in coordinating the visit, and to Paul Batchler for assisting with implementing the program and engaging the Junten students and teachers.

University of Queensland Economics Excursion
At the beginning of this term, some of the Year 11 and 12 students studying economics participated in an excursion to the University of Queensland, to attend lectures provided by members of the economics faculty. It was a wonderful opportunity to listen to professors and discuss topics we have been covering in class, with a slightly different perspective. A current second and third year economics student from UQ also spoke to the attendees about the lessons they have learnt studying in a university setting versus at school, and shared some of their tips for success. Our students also had the opportunity to spend some time enjoying the university campus before heading home.

Griffith Business Year 12 Program
The Griffith Business program offers an opportunity to experience the world of business available at Griffith University. This year, we have attended three workshop sessions. We completed workshops in Sport Management, Digital Marketing, and Hospitality and Tourism. The workshops provided an insight into how lectures, tutorials and assignments operate. We were also able to observe the extra curricula programs on offer such as ‘Go Global’ and Market Day. We recommend that Year 12 students should participate in this program, as they will be able to experience many aspects of university life.

Cav Road Student Wins Scholarship Trip to Japan
Congratulations to Dion Keenan, Year 10, for winning a place in the DET 2018 Queensland STEM Student Program Study tour to Hiroshima and Kyoto. He will travel to Japan in the December holidays. We hope this win will inspire all Japanese students to apply for future scholarship opportunities.
Reflecting on the award Dion said:
“I decided to apply for this scholarship as I believed that it would give me an excellent opportunity to enhance my interests in both STEM and Japanese subjects. I am looking forward to this scholarship teaching me so much about the Japanese culture as well as their perspectives and understandings on the fields of STEM. I am also looking forward to experiencing homestay and having a lot of fun with the twelve other students joining me on the trip! I know that this scholarship will help me improve my understanding and interest in the fields of Science and Mathematics, as I would like to become a neurologist and help cure neurological conditions. I am grateful for this opportunity and am proud to represent my wonderful school in Japan this year!” - Dion Keenan

Year 8 and 9 Students Enjoy Taiko Drumming Experience
Year 8 and 9 students have been able to have hands-on experience playing Japan’s famous taiko drums during visits by Toko-ton Taiko Drumming ensemble. The energy generated by the enthusiastic drumming was sensational and there were many captivated students in the audience. Thank you to Mrs Sloman for organising what we hope becomes a regular feature of our Japanese program.
Subject Selection- Prerequisites for continued Japanese Study
We have many keen and motivated Japanese students who will soon be considering their future study options. Please remember that Japanese requires sequential study for both semesters in Year 9 as a prerequisite for Year 10 study. Enrolment into Year 10 Japanese is not possible if the student has not studied the necessary Year 9 grammar, vocabulary and script. The same applies to Year 10 if students are to keep the option open for Senior Japanese study in Year 11. Please be sure to contact your student’s Japanese teacher after the subject selection evenings if you require further information regarding Japanese study.

Term 3 Focus – Year 11 and 12 Students
I would like to take the opportunity to welcome back our senior students for Term 3. This term is an extremely busy term particularly for our Year 12 students.
The Semester 1 results have now been finalised and we have commenced program changes for those students who have not achieved success in some of their subjects in Semester 1. Year 12 students now have to be mindful that they are achieving a minimum of a passing grade in all subjects this semester to be eligible to receive their QCE (Queensland Certificate of Education) at the completion of Year 12.
I have spoken to the students who are at risk of not achieving success and have sent letters home to parents seeking their support to make the required program changes.
All Year 11 and 12 students will be receiving their Overall Position (OP) estimate this term. Year 12 students will be interviewed first as they are about to commence their QTAC applications and will need to be aware of their current estimate.
Year 12 QCS Test
On Tuesday 4th September and Wednesday 5th September, our Year 12 OP eligible and Tertiary Selection Rank students will sit their 2018 QCS Test.
All Year 12 students will be required to attend school both test days. Students who are not sitting the QCS Test will be involved in an alternative program of instruction. More details regarding the test and alternative program arrangements will be emailed home to parents closer to the test dates.
Students are also reminded that they are welcome to attend the final Mighty Minds Masterclass QCS session which is being held from 3 pm to 5 pm on Wednesday 22 August in the Auditorium. I strongly recommend that all QCS students attend the final session in preparation for the actual QCS test. Students will be provided with the final tips and techniques that will enable them to achieve a successful result in the four (4) exam papers.

Employment opportunities with the Princess Alexandra Hospital post Year 12 are available to our graduating students. Congratulations to the following students who successfully completed the course: Mikayla Cook, Georgia Manns, Monet Gadd-Wells, Alicia Monaghan, Jack Kelly and Chance Wyeth.
Mt Gravatt Show 2018 – Student Art Section Award Winner
In July this year, students were invited to enter their artwork into the Art Competition - Student Section for 2018.
One of our Year 12 students – Robert Stjepanovic entered two pieces into the competition. His first was titled ‘Suburban Twist’ incorporated elements of the Mt Gravatt suburb where Robert grew up. Due to the considerable change in the suburban landscape with backyards becoming almost a thing of the past, Robert wanted to convey the emotion in his art piece to be one of happiness despite a changing suburban landscape. His second piece was titled ‘ Boot in a Bottle’.
Robert was awarded second place for his piece ‘Surburban Twist’ and third place for his piece titled ‘Boot in a bottle”. Lord Mayor, Graham Quirk presented Robert with his awards,
Congratulations Robert on your achievement. Thank you to Mrs Megan Bruckhorst for helping Robert start his project of textured sculpture and Mrs Tippett for her current and continued support.

Guidance News
This week we welcome Shauna McVie. Shauna is a new member to our Guidance team. The Guidance Officers at Cav now include Kate Niland, Paul Ross and Shauna. This will mean more timely appointments for our students and improved provision at Guidance services at Cav. Welcome on board Shauna.
Cavendish Road High Careers Expo
Last Friday our students in Years 10, 11 and 12 were able to access information from a variety of agencies. In addition to our students, we had about 80 parents attend the expo during first break. This information contributes to all students’ understanding of their post Year 12 options. It was great to see students utilising the expo to gather information, chat to people in industry and learn more about the world of work.
The school thanks BA Creative for the graphic design in the promotion material and the P and C for their provision of morning tea for our visitors. Thanks also to Teacher Aide, Jodie Anderson for organising all the exhibitors.

Q and A Session - Fri 3 August
The Year 10 careers program continued on Friday the 3rd of August with a question and answer session with 5 of our current year 12 students. Will Blair, Makaela Cook, Claire Farrington, Sade Hassan and Adam Lock gave the year 10’s valuable insight into how they chose their subjects and their tips for success. Will Blair encouraged students to follow their passion and recommended producing quality drafts to maximise the benefit of teacher feedback. Will averages 3 hours per night homework. Makaela Cook encouraged students to consider Vocational Educational Traning opportunities as they are advertised at school as they provide insights and opportunities into possible career pathways and part time work. Makaela does homework as required and works three part time jobs. Claire Farrington leads has a hectic lifestyle trying to juggle sporting and academic commitments and she encouraged students to seek balance in their lives and to maintain contact with friends. Claire averages 2 hours per night homework. Sade Hassan encourage students to communicate with teachers and have a plan of improvement. Sade’s OP prediction has improved dramatically over the past 12 months due to his plan for incremental improvement. Sade averages 4 hours per night homework. Adam is an electrical apprentice and found his own employer. He juggles paid work and study and it is difficult so he aims to complete all schoolwork at school. He advised students to be careful on social media as his employer checked his social media prior to his job interview. All students emphasised the need for planning and organisation. There has been extremely positive feedback from many Year 10 students. In particular, they have valued insight into life as a Year 11 and 12 student.
Year 12
Our Year 12 will be meeting with a Guidance Officer to discuss their plans for 2019. Are they on track for the planned pathway? We will be assisting with preferences for their QTAC (Queensland Tertiary Admission Centre). On Friday 10 August the Year 12s will be presented with their QTAC books and learn about the process of applying for university.
If parents would like to attend the interview please discuss with your son or daughter and let the Guidance Officer conducting the interview know. These interviews will be taking place during class time. It is best if students are well prepared and have completed the form they will be issued with on 10 August 2018.
This will link will take you to QTAC. On here you will find a wealth of info that will assist you in understanding the QTAC process.
Applications for the InspireU Law camp is now open!
All reasonable costs for the camp including all travel, flights, accommodation, meals and excursions are paid for, by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit (ATSISU).
InspireU camps are a great opportunity to bring Indigenous high school students onto the University of Queensland (UQ) campus at St Lucia, Brisbane, over the school holidays. Our aim is to inspire students onto a university pathway. Students are given a holistic experience of university life which is delivered in partnership with current Indigenous university students and UQ’s faculties through the area of study that the student is interested in. Further information is available at on website here.
Camp dates
- September – 23 – 28 – Law
Our programs are jam packed with engaging activities and fun things to do; below is a brief overview of what is touched on in the programs, but not limited to:
Law
Year 11 and 12 in 2018 that have an interest in studying Law take part in a range of activities designed to provide a practical insight into Law and the many opportunities for study and careers in this industry.
UQ understands that these programs are held on students’ holidays. As part of this program we will also be taking the students to Movie World. This will give the students the opportunity to relax, have fun and see what there is to do around Brisbane, university is more than just study!
UQ is currently home to 380 Indigenous students. InspireU program aims to give Indigenous high school students an opportunity to explore the opportunity of studying at one of Australia’s finest Universities. The ATSISU creates a ‘community’ away from home where students can support and celebrate each others’ success. InspireU attendees are connected to the ATSISU and current students to learn how to navigate university and gain an understanding of how to enter university.
Did you know – UQ offers an alternative entry program for Indigenous students? For more information please visit our website here.

Silly Socks Fundraiser
On Friday the 8th of June, Cav Rd held its first “Fred Hollows- Silly Socks Fundraiser”. The day was a huge success, with the final total coming in at $3315.15… which means that now 130 people have been given the gift of vision. On the day, students wore their sports uniforms and socks of their choice for a gold coin donation in support of the foundation. A Peer Support Class competition was also held. The winners were 8L who raised a whopping $326 alone! All proceeds from the event were donated to the Fred Hollows Foundation, which is a non-profit charity that aims to help treat preventable blindness in third world countries and communities.

A huge thank you goes to Ms Sue Larsen, the state fundraising manager for The Fred Hollows Foundation, who accepted the cheque and presented the school with a beautiful book about the foundation and its success. Thank you also to Mr Reynolds for helping us with the event and the prefect team. Also, a special mention to Zoe, Alanah, Bella, Dion, Mohammed, Ben and Hugo for their ongoing support and assistance. Overall, the day was a huge success and it was fantastic to see the Cav Community having fun and raising money for such a great cause. Thanks to everyone who helped make it possible!

This is a busy time of year and I am looking forward to working hard towards the finish line, with these wonderfully talented young people. Students in Year 9 and 10, please make sure you are reading the section on performance blacks to ensure you are prepared and ready when the time comes. I am looking forward to a creative and busy term 3.
Semester 1 Congratulation
Theatre Sports Champions 9C Drama Students
As part of the Year 9 curriculum, students learn the art of Theatre Sports and play a variety of these challenging and diverse improvisation games. As a class, a competition in the final week saw much laughter and innovative drama. I was most impressed with the outcomes and the creative and humorous nature of these students. With names like; 3FAS, 1%R’s, Barry Beegees, WE CAN DO IT and the Brisbane Buccaneers we were certainly entertained.
Congratulations to our class winners the 1%R’s. These students took home the THEATRE SPORTS OSCAR for Semester 1 [Liam Cran, Hasan Issak, Zac Mullaly, Harris Omerovic, Jasmine Steers, Eamon Webb].
Senior Drama

In week 5, students will watch a live theatre performance in the Hall by Shake and Stir Theatre company title “Unfiltered”. This is an assessment item for Drama students.
Performance Clothing
For all new Drama students Presenting assessment requires you to wear black performance clothing. Parents you do not need to rush out and purchase anything. Students can wear a variety of items from their existing wardrobe; t-shirts are to be plain black so any logos are worn inside out and back to front. Pants are tracksuit pants, dance pants; long shorts and students wear black socks or bare feet.
Arts on the Green
Congratulations to every single student who was involved in this wonderful event, hold your heads high, you represented your department and ensemble extremely well. This was truly an entertaining evening displaying the incredible talents of our Performing Arts students. The wonderful Artwork is still on display in the Resource Centre so staff and students please ensure you have a look at the diversity on offer.
Well done Dance Ensemble and thank you to the leaders and choreographers, Alanah Milne, Olivia Nassar, Taylor Schroder and Haley Tran. The performances on Friday night were outstanding.

Duke of Edinburgh at Cav Rd
The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award has commenced at Cav and the students are in the process of beginning to pick which physical activities, skills and services they will be completing in order to achieve their Bronze Award (or Silver Award for one of our students)!
The program is tailored for students 13 and over, with the benefit for students to earn credits towards the Queensland Certificate of Education in their senior years. The Awards are increasingly recognised by tertiary institutions and can even help participants with securing a job, so the students that have registered are really putting their best foot forward.
For Cav Road students, it is easy to get started as a participant and not too late. We are hoping to make this a lasting and fruitful program here at Cav Rd, so please contact Mitch Evans (mevan237@eq.edu.au) or Kate Niland (knila1@eq.edu.au) to express interest and find out more about the benefits of commencing the Duke of Edinburgh Award. Further information is also available at the website below and forms for expression of interest and parent/guardian permission can be found in Y Block (ask for Mr Evans).

Resource Centre
Lost and Damaged Books
Students are responsible for the books they borrow. These include library books, class novels and textbooks. Due care must be taken when they are in their care. However, we understand that accidents do occur…
If a borrowed item has been lost or damaged*, please contact the Resource Centre staff.
We appreciate your support and trust you understand that if books are lost or damaged then a replacement fee will be issued. The school Library Policy states that any books that are lost or damaged beyond repair are to be paid for so they can be replaced.
Never a dull moment…
The Resource Centre is buzzing with activity this term! We began Term 3 with the school’s acknowledgment of NAIDOC Week 2018. A display of the posters created by some of the Indigenous students in our community took pride of place in the main area of the Resource Centre. With the theme for NAIDOC Week being ‘Because of her, we can’, the posters recognised a significant woman in the student’s life.
The biennale Arts on the Green has seen the Resource Centre transformed into a Performing Arts space to include an extensive Art exhibition which showcases the talented student artists in our midst. The space was also used on the night for Drama and Dance performances. The Art Exhibition will remain in the Resource Centre for the next couple of weeks. Please drop in to view the artwork.
The Resource Centre might not look much like a library at the moment. Shelves have been moved aside to allow for the art exhibition, parent teacher interviews and the like. But it is…
Book Week 2018 is around the corner. The theme for Book Week is Find your Treasure. We are putting a slightly different spin on the theme by promoting great books; in other words, books regarded as ‘great’ or ‘classic’ – for the way that they have continued to engage and inspire. Staff have been asked to name a Classic to contribute to our ‘Treasure a great book display’. In conjunction with the English Faculty, plenty of Book Week activities are planned including a Trash to Treasure Book Swap, a Trivia Competition, and Costume Day, to name a few.

Super Series
We will be hosting a Touch Super Series starting July 27 from 3-5 pm at Cav Rd for students in the Touch academy, all grades welcome to nominate. The reasons behind creating this competition is that in our review at the end of 2017, Mr Loth and I both concluded that a lot of our academy students don’t compete in strong enough competitions outside of school and therefore struggle to compete when games becomes difficult. This competition will divide the talent amongst senior and junior age group where younger students will be challenged by older students giving them the opportunity to step up. The intention is that all teams will be even in ability, play fair and push their boundaries in the lead up to the QLD All Schools Carnival.
Competition Procedures are as follows
- Held over FOUR Friday afternoons during Term Three
- Each match day will be double headers
- Time slots would be 3.00pm, 3.30pm, 4.00pm & 4.30pm
- QLD All Schools Touch rules : 25 mins straight; both teams get a tap
- Cav Rd Touch singlets will be worn. One team will be green, the other team will be black
- Each team will need to provide a referee for the other match. Penalties apply for non-compliance
- Match Day 1 – Week 2 – July 27 – Rounds 1 & 2
- Match Day 2 – Week 4 – August 10 – Rounds 3 & 4
- Match Day 3 – Week 6 – August 24 – Rounds 5 & 6
- Match Day 4 – Week 7 – August 31 – SF & GF
- Reserve Week for Wet Weather – Week 8 – September 7
- There will be a Boys Division and a Girls Division
- There will be FOUR teams in each Division, created by a Draft
- Each team will play everyone twice
- Semi Finals will take place – 1 v 4 and 2 v 3. Winners progress to the Grand Final
- The process is for all interested players to nominate online via the survey monkey link
- The FOUR appointed Captains will draft players into their teams one at a time
- There will be 8 - 10 players per team (up to approx. 40 players)
- Each team will have a combination of Open (2-3), Under 15 (2-3) and Under 13 (1-2) players; plus Wingers (2) before being back filled if necessary.
Mr Loth has sent an email with the survey link to all students in the academy. They do not have to nominate but we encourage all to dip their toes into the water and give it a go. We look forward to hosting this competition for our students, we know the benefits for each individual and our touch community will be great.

We are currently looking for a new Uniform Shop Convenor following the resignation of Madonna after 5 years. We thank Madonna for all her work over that time and wish her all the very best for her future endeavours. If you are interested in knowing more about the Uniform Shop Convenor role, please contact us at uniformshop@cavroadshs.eq.edu.au.
What’s new in the P and C
We have lots of news to share:
- Jumpers on sale – please note that woollen jumpers are now just $20 at the uniform shop. These are great for those cold mornings.
- After consideration of many samples, the P&C has decided to source two new formal uniform items for girls. We are working with suppliers to determine how soon into the new year we can have girls’ green shorts and grey long pants available for sale.
- The P&C is proud to support the school’s Kokoda Challenge teams every year. Once again, the students and staff did a fantastic job of representing the school at the Brisbane and Gold Coast Events. Well done to all participants and a huge thank you to all the staff for the time and effort you put in to organise this event and support our students.
- Second hand uniforms – a reminder that the uniform shop is no longer selling second hand uniforms on consignment. A facebook group has been set up for parents to organise their own buying and selling. Used uniforms can also be donated for distribution to families in need by dropping them off at the uniform shop or student services. Donations in excess of this need will be sold in the uniform shop with funds going to the P&C.
The facebook group can be found by searching in Facebook for Cavendish Road SHS Second Hand Uniforms. As it is a closed group you will need to apply to join and wait to be approved by a P&C Exec volunteer. - Community Guest Speaker evenings – planning is underway for the next in our series of community evenings. Watch this space for details.
- Entertainment Books – these are available from the uniform shop and both books and digital memberships (loaded on your phone) can be ordered at. You can save even if you don’t eat out often with lots of discounted gift cards and e-gift cards on offer through your membership including Wish Cards (save on your everyday shopping at Woolworths, BWS and Woolworths Caltex), BCF, David Jones, Country Road, Supercheap, Rebel, JB Hi-fi and more.
