Principal’s Report

Term 1 is well behind us and next week parents and carers have the first opportunity to conference with teachers of how our students are faring in their new year of studies. Term 1 face to face interviews are usually very well attended. Teachers indicate if for good reason requesting an interview with parents and I would encourage parents where this is the case on your child’s report to make those appointments a priority. Teachers prepare well for these contacts and will have student work, some assessment results to report and provide insights on student strengths and advice. As assessment programs vary across subjects and tends to intensify in the mid to latter part of term 2 student performance at this juncture may not reflect future performance or outcomes. Teachers at Cav are keen to communicate and assessment planners are available in OneSchool to see the ‘road ahead’.

School leadership is evolving – so is our school. Recently I was confirmed as Executive Principal at Cav. the prospect of which was certainly attractive in my seeking appointment in first instance last year. There is great personal professional satisfaction in reaching the pinnacle of Principal leadership in State schools over a long career, and as the old saying goes “the harder you work, the more fortunate we are”. Cav is a flagship school and this didn’t occur overnight. For schools, and Principals at this level who lead them, is not only about status, but an obligation to contribute back into the system, of hopefully inspired leadership by Principal for others, progressive ideas and commitment in all ways to the State schools ideals and purpose. There is an imputed integrity of the way in which our school is led, the systems employed to ensure responsive and responsible client service to parents, doing some heavy lifting when required to ensure all students are included and have opportunity to succeed to their optimum.

I plan to steer our school where high performance is the result of well executed plans to continually improve, core values of opportunity for every child continue and where pursuing and achieving excellence and not elitism drives our culture of learning.

Our P and C has been mightily supportive of my vision for the future of our school, maintaining our quality school status is not only based on measures of performance but of culture. The past year I have been realigning resources, systems and people to play their strengths which best delivers on identified priorities for learning. I am very fortunate to have an excellent team and staff and their professional engagement in the school improvement agenda is outstanding. This filters into classrooms where our teachers receive support, guidance and time to do their job well and that is to see every child’s learning progress. Looking to do better is the secret to the successes and the scoreboard.

Associate Principals have recently been appointed to take up duty from week 4. Mrs Catherine McCarthy, currently acting Principal at Coorparoo College and Mr Darren Beebe, currently Deputy Principal at Mt Gravatt High will join the executive team. Parents will be aware Ms Meryl Johnston was successful in promotion to Head Of School at Stretton State College. Delay in announcing was unavoidable due to organisational circumstances elsewhere in the system. As our school approaches 1900 students enrolled and to keep apace of aspirations for our school, Associates will have key portfolios in leading Teaching & Learning quality and Curriculum development across the whole school years 7 to 12. Mr Cox (Year 10), Mr Hazzard (Years 7 and 8), Mrs VanGenderen (Years 11 and 12) continue as Deputy Principals and Mr Thomson Acting Deputy (Year 9). Miss Gardiner is substantive Head of Department – Well Being.

In the mix this year

In the mix this year I have appointed Literacy and Numeracy Teacher coaches, expanded our Guidance Team and our International and LOTE Department has its own identity led by Ms Masselos. Mr Reynolds heads a Teaching and Learning department where learning support services have been collected together under the one umbrella. Student progress tracking and earlier interventions where required is the core work of this team. There is a strong student centred focus in this team arrangement.

Next on the agenda

Next on the agenda is to reinvigorate our school library. My plan is to reinvent that space as a Learning Hub in which we create a Reading Centre, and where specialist assistance is available to students in developing their formal research and writing skills.

New Programs of excellence

New Programs of excellence are in the pipeline. With the new PAC scheduled to be completed for 2020 our Arts Department led by Mrs Tippett is exploring possibilities for Programs of Excellence in the performing and visual arts that will round out our curriculum opportunities for extension and enrichment complementing our sports, science and maths offerings.

My role is to coordinate all of this to ensure quality education service, accountability and ensuring our school remains at leading edge. A significant part of my work is building the capacity of teachers and working with the broader community, especially parents to ensure aspirations held for our young people are realised.

Sports Hall completed

The Alan Sampson Sports Centre was completed and keys handed over this week. It is an amazing facility and an open day will be announced shortly. HPE staff can’t wait to move in and all students keen to see the doors open.

Full school assemblies and junior and senior school assemblies will be held each week in the Centre. It will be a memorable occasion to have the first full school assembly in the coming weeks once we have organisational and student movement details sorted. An official opening will be held in due course and the centre’s namesake in attendance.

I’m very pleased that our seniors in particular will get use of it well before they graduate. Our new Performing Arts Centre is now out of the ground and on track for new school year 2020.

School Review time

Every 4 years schools are reviewed across 9 domains of the national school improvement tool. Information can be found on our web site. Next week I will be away reviewing a high school on the Sunshine Coast as a peer reviewer. There are up to 4 reviewers appointed as a team to review their nominated school for up to 5 days. Leadership, teachers, students, parents, community members and business and other partners to the school are interviewed and asked to share their perceptions of the school from their perspective. Our review will take place in week 8 and 9 this term. It’s a time to put best foot forward but importantly the insights from uninvested parties is gold to identifying what we do well, where can improve and perhaps what we need to do next to meet our aspirations. Mrs Van Genderen is managing organisational arrangements and parents wishing to take part should contact her.

Anzac Students’ Commemoration Service – Anzac Square

On Wednesday 24 April, five of our Year 12 senior student leaders and I attended the 23rd Anzac Students’ Commemoration Service held at the Anzac Square Memorial in the city. The Anzac Students’ Commemoration Service is conducted annually for school students in south east Queensland and enables students to participate in an act of commemoration of the sacrifices of so many Australian and New Zealand men and women over the past century. It aims to enhance understanding among school students of the Spirit of Anzac and the relevance of this Spirit to the development of our nation.

Over 3000 students from 98 schools attended the ceremony along with official guests including His Excellency the Honourable Paul de Jersey AC, Governor of Queensland, the Premier of Queensland – the Honourable Annastacia Palaszczuk MP, senior military personnel and community leaders. Our students were invited to take part in the wreath laying ceremony and were fortunate to have met and shaken the hands of the Governor and Premier of Queensland.

I would like to thank our students for attending the ceremony and for representing Cavendish Road State High School so well. It was a privilege to be invited to attend this solemn act of commemoration.

Interim Report Results

Term 1 Interim Reports have been released. Discussions with students, their families and teachers are taking place and some students will have program changes for Term 2. I encourage students to work hard in their new subjects this term and I am looking forward to seeing positive results at the end of this semester.

Year 11 Work Experience

Students who are not attending the Year 11 camp are undertaking work experience this week. All Year 11 students will be completing the Certificate II in Skills for Work and Vocational Pathways by the completion of their Year 12 year. A mandatory component of the certificate is that students must complete 30 hours of work experience. They are required to document their experience in the workbook that was given to them last week. The completed booklets need to be handed into K16 by the student on their return to school in Week 3.

Year 12 QCS Practice Test and Work Experience – 20 – 24 May

Year 12 students who are OP eligible and the Tertiary Selection Rank students who have elected to sit QCS will be involved in their QCS Preparation week from Monday 20 May to Friday 24 May. Students will be involved in many sessions which will prepare them for their QCS Practice Test. The test will be held on Thursday 23 May and Friday 24 May. The schedule for the week is being emailed home to students and parents closer to the date.

Year 12 students who are not participating in the QCS Preparation Program will be attending Work Experience for the week commencing Monday 20 May to Friday 24 May. Work experience is compulsory for these students as it is a requirement of the Certificate II in Skills for Work that they are currently completing. This certificate is a highly valuable learning experience and provides students with a qualification relating to work skills and career development.

Our VET Co-ordinator – Sarah Stubican has outlined the details of the work experience and student requirements to families via a letter sent home last week.

Students who are unable to attend work experience due to special circumstances must attend school as per usual. Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns regarding work experience.

I wish all of our Year 12 students all the very best for the week of Monday 20 May to Friday 24 May. I hope that they find the week rewarding and look forward to discussing the students’ outcomes and positive stories on their return.

Year 12 Work Experience

Last week students in three PSC classes commenced their Certificate II in Skills for Work and Vocational Pathways. Students were given both a paper and electronic copy of the VET Student handbook, enrolment form and privacy statement. The certificate provides students with several benefits:

  • Attracts 4 QCE points upon successful completion
  • Meets the literacy and numeracy requirements required to obtain a QCE.
  • Provides strategies for work-related learning.
  • Provides an opportunity to acquire skills in responding to workplace problems, interacting with others in the workplace and writing workplace texts.

As part of this certificate, students will also complete work experience. Work experience will occur from Monday 20th May to Friday 24th May. Paperwork for this was given to students last Friday and students need to contact their employer to arrange a meeting time to complete this paperwork. The completed paperwork should then be returned to me in K16 by Friday, 10 May.

Some students have been allocated a work experience placement via an organisation called SCIPS while others have elected to find their own placement. Please be aware that a $25 cancellation fee will be invoiced should your student elect not to proceed with a SCIPS placement.

If your student is completing this certificate you should have received and email this week mapping out deadlines and requirements. Should this not be the case please feel free to contact me sgray31@eq.edu.au.

TAFE Courses for Semester 2

Toward the end of this month, enrolments will open for Semester 2 courses. TAFE courses are available to students who are ATAR ineligible and wish to pursue a career through a TAFE pathway. Please encourage your student to see me in K16 to discuss their interest in completing certificates in areas such as: business, health support services, information and digital media, telecommunications technology, beauty and make-up, sport and recreation or visual art.

While some courses do attract fees, many of the courses are Vetis funded, which may entitle eligible students to study these courses with no out-of-pocket cost to the family. However, parents should be aware that completing certificates usually requires students to attend a TAFE campus one day a week. The onus is then on students to organise around this absence and ensure their subject commitments here at school are still met.

School Review

Our school review — an opportunity to have your say

Our school is scheduled for a review from 13 -19 June 2019.

The Department of Education regularly reviews the teaching and learning practices of Queensland state schools. The reviews are conducted by the department’s School Improvement Unit.

The reviews do not rate or compare schools, but provide us with independent feedback so we can continue to improve learning outcomes for students.

All schools have a review at least once every four years. Key findings from the review will be made available to parents and the community on our school website.

The review team would like to hear from the school community and I encourage anyone who is interested to have their say. Your feedback is important and will help us continue to deliver a great education for students.

Feedback can be provided to the review team by phone or in person. All feedback remains confidential.

Please contact the school office if you are interested in speaking to a reviewer. Alternatively, you can register your interest by emailing siumb@qed.qld.gov.au.

More information about the review process is available from the department’s website in the link below.

Humanities – Year 7

Year 7 students were very privileged to be visited by Leonie Coghill, the Director of the Queensland Museum’s Repatriation Program on Wednesday 24 April. It was interesting to hear the connection between Australian Indigenous peoples and the remains, and how it brings peace to their communities once the bodies are returned. Leonie talked about how the process of repatriation was achieved, which was very relevant to our upcoming assignment. A lot of her words were very powerful and thought provoking.

District X-Country

On the 22nd of March 2019, the Cav Rd Green Machine returned to Citipointe with only one goal in mind, winning consecutive District X-Country titles. All 53 students wearing their green and white with pride exceeded expectations and put on an amazing display of X-Country running and teamwork. All students cheered on their teammates as Cav Rd demonstrated to all the other schools exactly what a competitive beast it is. As a school we had 3 Age Champions and the following students should be commended on their incredible effort to win Age Champion: Diedonne B (Open Boys) Sam C (15 Boys) & Avalon B (13 Girls). Overall, as a school we had to wait a day or two for the final results but we got the news we wanted and deserved with Cav Rd winning by a 78 points which is just incredible when you consider each point is one place in the race. This was a tremendous effort by the whole school community to win this championship and it has created an incredible amount of excitement moving forward to next year trying to make it a hat-trick of consecutive titles in 2020.

Maths

Assessment, Results, the new QCE and a Growth Mindset

The mathematics department at Cavendish Road have been working hard to ensure that our students are well prepared for the upcoming changes as a part of the introduction to the new QCE.

The preparation for changes to senior assessment extend back to the beginning of Year 9. Students in Years 9, 10 and 11 will be undertaking assessment tasks that best prepare them for their first summative pieces which begin in Term 4 Year 11 and finish with an external exam during term 4 Year 12.

Two of the most significant changes include the introduction of a Problem Solving and Modelling Task (PSMT) and the change from criterion based marking to marks and percentages. Assessment in years 9 to 11 have been changed in-line with this to ensure students experience success in their summative work.

The PSMT differs from the previous style of assignment and requires students to write a report of up to 10 pages to answer a set question based on a specific context. The writing of the report needs to be in line with specified criteria and is worth 20% of their grade for the year. It is an area where students can excel if they put in the time and are proactive at asking for help. The tasks that have been developed for students in years 9 and 10 where developed with a significant amount of scaffolding to help students adapt to the change. In Year 11, the scaffolding is reduced in line with the summative task they will undertake in term 4 year 11. For some students this has proven difficult and as a result their results may be uncharacteristically low until they adapt to the change. It is important if this is the case with your son/daughter that you discuss what changes need to be made to ensure success the next time around. The upcoming Parent/Teacher evenings provide a great opportunity for that.

The change to marks from criteria also present some changes to how an overall grade can be influenced by poor working or communication. In the previous system poor communication had the capacity to lower a grade. In the new system, poor communication could result in the halving of a result. As marks are allocated to specific sections of the response, failure to include the formula, show substitution, rearrangement and an answer with units can result in a very low grade even with a correct answer. Ensuring full working in class and through homework will help ensure the same is likely to be given in the assessment.

The final External Exam in mathematics in year 12 is worth 50 percent of the student’s grade in the subject and covers work from Year 11 and Year 12. This means that students cannot simply let go of what was taught in first term as it well be assessed again in term 4. In my first newsletter this year I spoke about the importance of mastery learning and ensuring that students address any misconceptions or misunderstandings early to ensure longer retention rates. As a parent, what can you do to help your son/daughter include practices that adapt to these changes?

Tips for parents to help their children prepare for the new QCE and experience success in Years 9, 10 and 11 as they lead into the change.

  • Ensure a constant time and dedicated area in the house are allocated for homework
  • Ensure students have all of their required materials at school each day. Note book and practice book, Homework book, calculator, pens and charged computer.
  • Check that Term Planners and Learning Goals are downloaded from the learning place and pasted into their notes books at the beginning of each term.
  • Follow the rule of ones. During each homework session encourage your son or daughter to try questions from work given on that day, 1 week prior, 1 month prior and 1 term prior. This helps move information from short to long term memory and ensures longer retention rates.
  • Access the free tutoring available at Cavendish Road SHS on a Thursday afternoon in E6 and Wednesday afternoons in E10 for Mathematical Methods students.
  • Check in on their progress with diagnostic assessments which are completed each term
  • Make contact with their teacher if you have concern.

Change is not always an easy process and asking your children to change their behaviours to adapt to the new QCE will not always occur easily. If your son or daughter’s results this term are lower than you would expect it is important to keep your focus on a growth mindset and help them return to form by adapting to the necessary change.

Shifting mindsets to ones that support growth rather than a fixed approach can have a significant impact on performance and mental health. Some examples include praising your child for their effort, work, use of strategies and resilience instead of praise around fixed attributes such as talent or intellect. Support your child from the sidelines. Resist the temptation to take over or provide intervention or assistance. View failure as a bump in the road rather than a reason to stop trying. The impact you have a parent and the behaviours you model cannot be underestimated. Be optimistic. Everyone can learn new things, intelligence is not fixed and attitude to learning outperforms perceived aptitude. Rather than expecting A’s, expect that they work hard and apply the strategies that they have been shown and as have been outlined above.

As always, if you have any questions or would like any further information anything that has been discussed above please feel free to contact me directly.

Kind Regards
Terry Moran

Japanese

Omiya Koryo Homestay

Does your child study Japanese? Are they keen to enrich their Japanese studies? If you answered yes, then you are a perfect candidate to host one of the students visiting from Japan. Students from Omiya Koryo Senior High School will be visiting our school from Sunday 18th August – Monday 26th August (8 nights). Hosting a Japanese student will provide your child with an opportunity to: enrich our Japanese language curriculum, enhance their Japanese language ability and develop cross-cultural understanding.

As Cavendish Road SHS students are hosted by families of Omiya Koryo SHS students during the reciprocal CRSHS study tours to Japan, there is no payment to home stay families during this visit. We rely in the generosity of host families to support this long-standing sister-school relationship. Please see your Japanese teacher for details and return the expression of interest form to your Japanese teacher.

Speech Contest

Students studying Japanese at Cav Road are invited to participate in the Cav Road Speech Contest in week 6 (exact dates TBA). There will be certificates and small gifts for all entrants, and prizes for the top 5 speakers in Years 7 -10. The top 5 will represent Cav Road in the Brisbane Japanese Speech Competition at Griffith University on Sunday 4th August. Please see your Japanese teacher for details and return the registration form to your class teacher. Speech format will be announced to students in the coming weeks.

Japanese Dance and Cultural Activities

Students are invited to join up to a new Tuesday (juniors) or Wednesday (seniors) afternoon activity. The activities will focus around preparing a dance troupe to perform Japanese Bon Odori Dance, Tokyo 2020 Olympics Dance, Para Para Dancing or Yosakoi Dance during the Omiya Koryo Sister School visit in August. Students will have the opportunity to engage in physical and cultural activities related to Japanese culture. The dance component will form part of the activity with the end goal of performing in August, but there is also scope for students to explore other cultural past times such as manga and anime style drawing, traditional papermaking and paper craft, kite and mask making, tea ceremony, calligraphy, all of which are low cost. Students do not need to be currently studying Japanese to join this group.

For more information about any of the above, please email the Acting Japanese Coordinator, Natalie McConnell on 3394 0796 or email nxmcc3@eq.edu.au.
