Principal’s Report

A most recent highlight this term was the official opening of the Alan Sampson Sports Centre by the Honourable Grace Grace, Minister for Education and Industrial Relations. It was a moving event and we at Cav were so glad to see Alan return to accept the honour. Alan is an outstanding champion of State education and formidably past Principal at Cav for over 12 years. While Principal, Alan’s leadership inspired emerging leaders, including me. Alan modernised our school, re-invented the ethos of aspiration and success for all and instilled such pride from those successes that Cav stands with and amongst the best schools. This is an exceptional legacy and those who follow truly stand on the shoulders of a giant. We should do more to acknowledge really good school leaders in the State system. Perhaps I will have a broom cupboard named after me. After life at Cav Alan went on to be an Assistant Regional Director, returned to schools as Executive Principal at Brisbane School of Distance Education and set about re-inventing that school. Alan became a School Improvement Internal Reviewer in Education Queensland and most recently led a campus at Western Cape College, Tagai, as end of career challenge. It is well deserved that we honour a genuine “Cavroadian”.

State schools continue to be ‘re-discovered’ as schools of choice and re-stitching the fabric of society and community. While tabloid media attempt to include under-mining society and community as a means to remain relevant and so-called ‘current affairs’ shows on commercial TV whip up rage and a frenzy in a “hey, look over here…isn’t it terrible?” peddling of misinformation and faux outrage, it’s business as usual at Cav. Next week it will be something else as these outlets demonstrate contempt for their readers and viewership for having a short attention span and will need to be entertained with new topics of ‘beating up’on someone or something else.

Meanwhile, perhaps performance also has something to do with it and enrages those who believe that State schools should only exist for the marginalised.

Assessment of schools under or overachieving is a matter of statistical analysis based on past performance, trends and backgrounded against socio-economic advantage. Not only outright performance, but gain and learning growth are real measures of success. Our school performance continues to be strong and tracking where we should be, and in some cases ‘punching above our weight’.

At Cav, our school is performing amongst the best, and as Cav is a sought after school by families who are anything but marginalised our school’s ICSEA (Index of Comparative Socio- Economic Advantage) continues to climb. What a problem to have! Aspirant families and students and we still commit to being an inclusive school for families of all walks of life. All children matter. Our enrolment is reliably predicted and planned well to continue providing great education to just over 1900 students in 2020; a nett gain of 100 students on this year. Failing, dysfunctional, or poor schools do not grow. We only limit our enrolment based on our built capacity and not by raising the financial bar as the means of entry that capitalises on comparative economic advantage to select students accounting for about 80% of a school’s performance.

Not only are academic and sporting successes for our school amongst the best, Cav is also proud of its record of philanthropy and community service of our students. Year 12 student Kirsten Lin, is one of 12 students to receive an award from the Order of Australia Association – Secondary Schools Citizenship Awards to be conferred by the Queensland Governor, His Excellency Paul De Jersey AC at Parliament House on Friday 20 September. This is the third consecutive year such honour has been bestowed on a ‘Cavroadian’. 38 schools of government and non-government will be present. I am also honoured to be invited to give a short speech of thanks on behalf of all schools.

Term 3 sees the culmination of significant milestone events in the school calendar across all fields of student endeavour. Across the school students have not only been well engaged and participating but reaping the rewards of their hard work, talents and abilities. Living our school motto.

Not only busy, but productive, term 3 is a time of being well-immersed in current school life, participating in and celebrating wins and in planning mode for next year.

The results of all of this activity in our school includes another great sister school visit by Omiya Koryo from Japan, Cav reigns supreme in Metro Finals in Sports, our student leadership team for 2020 went to the “polls” with an announcement early next term of student leadership after final round interviews, Year 7’s recently made their project based learning presentations, Seniors sat their final block exams, our RU OK day was simply brilliant.  SETP and subject selections in both Junior and Senior School were all again well supported by parents.

While NAPLAN is still being referred to as a measure of a school I will continue to report that NAPLAN results were all green in every respect and arrows pointing up indicating not only outright performance but growth from Year 7 to 9. The percentage of students reaching or exceeding national standard hovers about the 98% to 100% mark and the percentage of students in the Upper 2 Bands hovers about or above 40%.  I do not promote the exemption or withdrawal by parents of their child from NAPLAN tests, though I note a small and increasing trend in lower participation rates. Many parents will be aware that some States have called for a review of the national testing program of students.

Our P&C again lights the way in partnership with the school and should be commended for consistently supporting and complementing our school’s genuine intent to foster student wellbeing necessary for a great culture for learning.  Another great success last week in the evening presentation by Karyn Healy “Raising Competent Teenagers”.

Year 12 Formal arrangements are under way. I look forward to extending invitations to as many Year 12 students who wish to attend the formal. Students need to have shown their good standing and it is a ‘rite of passage’ for our young people who have demonstrated meeting all of their schooling responsibilities. The formal is a celebration event and to receive an invitation students need to have met all of their senior school agreements. This means all assessment is lodged, all absences are explained so I can authorise them and there are no outstanding disciplinary matters. I need to remind parents to avoid any disappointment and last minute negotiating to keep an eye on school accounts. With early notice I can assist families where this may be an issue and impediment to their son or daughter’s attendance.

Darren Beebe

One of my core strategic responsibilities as Associate Principal at Cavendish Road SHS is to ensure that the Australian Curriculum in Years 7 – 10 is being implemented with a very high degree of consistency and thoroughness.

Throughout the remainder of 2019 and into 2020, I will be working with John Hazzard (Deputy Principal leading the Australian Curriculum implementation) and the curriculum Heads of Departments to ensure a very high degree of alignment exists between the Australian Curriculum content/achievement standards and classroom implementation.

The Australian Curriculum is a three-dimensional curriculum that recognises the central importance of disciplinary knowledge, skills and understanding, general capabilities and cross-curriculum priorities.

Disciplinary knowledge, skills and understanding is found in the eight learning areas: English, Mathematics, Science, Health and Physical Education, Humanities and Social Sciences, The Arts, Technologies and Languages. The Australian Curriculum also provides seven general capabilities: Literacy, Numeracy, ICT Capability, Critical and Creative Thinking, Personal and Social Capability, Ethical Understanding and Intercultural Understanding and these are developed and applied, where relevant, through the learning areas.

The Australian Curriculum also includes three current cross-curriculum priorities that are to be developed, where relevant, through the learning areas. These are: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures, Asia and Australia’s Engagement with Asia, and Sustainability and are embedded into the content of the learning areas where appropriate.

The school recently undertook a review to ensure that the recommended time allocations for each learning area are being met resulting in increased curriculum time for the Arts and Technology in Year 8 commencing in 2021.

As we refine our approach to learning through the Australian Curriculum, and the tracking of student achievement over time, we will be explicitly focussing on student progress and learning growth as our core business, and the way we as teachers, facilitate this through effective pedagogy.

Year 12 QCS Test

The QCS Test was held over Tuesday 3 September and Wednesday 4 September 2019. Students completed four test papers including a Writing Task, Short Response and two Multiple Choice Question papers.

Congratulations to all Year 12 students for the effort they put into meeting their commitment to the two long days of testing. All students managed the strict testing conditions to complete the four papers with very high standards of behaviour. All students should be very proud of their efforts. Thank you to the Year 11 students who served a light breakfast to the QCS students on both mornings before the test.

Students will learn the results from the QCS Test when they receive their Senior Statements in December.

Year 12 OP Estimate Interviews

On our return to school in Term 4, I will be conducting the Year 12 OP estimate interviews. Students will be attending a short interview with me to discuss their current OP estimate and will devise further strategies that students are able to put into place to improve their results prior to exit. Term 4 assessment is still to be completed and can still have an impact on the students’ final OP result.

Our Year 11 and 12 students have just completed their mini exam block for Term 3. We look forward to seeing the results and will work with students in Term 4 to continue to achieve success.

I wish all of our Year 11 and 12 students a safe and enjoyable break and look forward to working with you all again in Term 4.

Choose Your Own Health Career Website

The Department of Health has released a new career website to support young Queenslanders who want to work in the health industry. The Choose Your Own Health Career website aims to highlight the many job opportunities which are available within the health sector and can be achieved through a vocational education and training pathway.

With health care and social assistance the largest and fastest growing industry in Queensland, this website provides a useful resource to support students wanting to contribute to this industry.

The site also identifies jobs, which are currently in high demand in their particular fields, where skills shortages exist, and those jobs where strong growth is predicted in the next 5–10years. The pathways, job profiles and case studies included on the website promote the priority jobs which were identified by these stakeholders.

Legal Studies Preparation Court Excursion

Recently, students from the Year 10 Legal Studies Preparation classes visited the Holland Park Magistrates Court as part of their unit of study on Law, Courts and Government. In this unit, students have been learning about the court hierarchy, the jurisdiction of each level of the courts, and court personnel. At the courthouse, students observed a range of court cases and had the good fortune to be addressed by and ask questions of Magistrate Young, who provided valuable insights into his role and court processes. Following their observation of cases, students explored an empty courtroom and the holding cells inside and under the courthouse. Students had a lot of fun sitting in the Magistrate’s chair, testing out the microphones in the courtroom, and locking each other in the dock and holding cells. The excursion proved to be a memorable experience and provided students with first-hand experience of the legal system which they study.

Year 11 Certificate III Business – R U OK Day

On Friday 6 September, the Year 11 Certificate III Business students worked together to raise awareness for the RUOK? Foundation. Gavin Larkin created the RUOK? Foundation after losing his father, Barry Larkin, to mental health issues. His aim was to protect other families from the pain his family had to endure and raise awareness for both mental health and suicide prevention.

The two Certificate III Business classes organised a variety of activities including card games, skipping, a handball competition, lob-a-choc and a whole school lucky door prize. Students also made and sold cupcakes and rocky road. Our aim was to work together in teams to raise Funds and awareness.

Overall RUOK? Day was a roaring success and it was great to see so many from the Cav Community having fun and increasing awareness for this important cause. Many students joined us on A-parade at first break to participate in the activities or purchase a cupcake or rocky road. The Nepal Challenge students also held a sausage sizzle.

Many thanks to the Certificate II Music students who provided entertainment and a big shout out to Headspace for visiting the school on this very important day to help raise awareness.

Thank you to all that made this day possible.

Omiya Koryo Sister School Visit, August 18-26

The Omiya Koryo Senior High School group arrived on Sunday August 18. They were greeted by 25 families eager to share some Cav Road hospitality with our visitors.

A welcome ceremony was held on Monday morning. Mr Usher and the group leader, Mr Saito exchanged school gifts. Cavendish Road presented some indigenous artwork to Omiya Koryo SHS. In return, we received a “Daruma” wishing doll. Mr Saito explained that Japanese people colour in the eyes of these dolls in order to make a wish for good luck such as prosperity in business or good results in exams and so on. Mr Usher coloured in the eye of the daruma, bringing wishes for a strong and long- lasting relationship between the two sister schools.

The visiting students presented many aspects of Japanese culture to Cav Road students during special demonstration lessons throughout the week. The students of both schools also enjoyed a day at Dreamworld and the host families were treated to a ‘Thank you Dinner’ by Omiya Koryo on the Friday evening. Our lovely host families then spent the weekend showing the students the sites of Brisbane and enabling them to experience Australian daily life.

The hugs and tears as the Omiya Koryo students left on the Monday morning were testament to the great friendships formed between the students. There are many Cav Road students now planning to take part in the 2020 Japan Study Tour for students in years 10-12 in order to meet their Omiya Koryo friends again.

We once again gratefully acknowledge the kindness shown by the 25 Cavendish Road families who volunteered who host the Omiya Koryo students. Without your support we could not run the reciprocal sister school exchange program, which also provides opportunities for our students to experience homestay and study in Japan. Thank you for helping to make the 2019 visit such a success!

Japanese Dance Culture Group News- Tuesday Junior Sport

We recently showcased our dance efforts to our visiting sister school, Omiya Koryo, at their welcome assembly on Monday August 19. For trimester 2 of junior sport, we have been practising the Tokyo 2020 Olympics dance to perform at this ceremony. The students from Omiya Koryo were so surprised to see that we had learnt the dance for their arrival to the school. Cav Road students did us proud and did a wonderful job of the dance – omedetou!

On Tuesday August 20, we had the opportunity to participate in a Japanese Tea Ceremony – sadou. We have been looking forward to this all trimester, and we were lucky enough to have some visitors from Omiya Koryo. This was the final lesson for the trimester of our Japanese Dance Culture activity on Tuesday afternoons, and it was a great way to finish the trimester.

We drank Japanese macha (powdered green tea, which has a stronger flavour than leaf green tea) with traditional Japanese sweets (mochi, anko, senbei). It was wonderful to have visitors from Japan to teach us about the traditional sweets and tea.

Cav Quest 16 October 2019

Preparations for the school’s annual talent show ‘Cav Quest’ are well and truly under way, with the Cert II in Music Industry and Music in Practice classes undergoing a gruelling selection process. This year’s auditions have been tougher than ever with the outstanding talent walking through the music room doors. Alas, not every applicant can make it through, and we congratulate each and every person who auditioned. As we await the completion of the Performing Arts Centre, we have had to reduce our intake this year due to limited seating at our temporary venue, the auditorium. This change of venue will also impact ticket sales and we kindly ask that you book tickets on our school online booking system, SOBS (more information to be released soon). The bookings will be limited to 5 seats per booking on a ‘first in, best dressed’ basis. Tickets booked via SOBS can be collected at the door on the night.

Date: 16 October
Time: Doors open at 5:30 for a 6pm start - 9pm finish.
Venue: Cavendish Road State High School Auditorium
Tickets: $5 per person - book on SOBS. (Collect tickets at the door on the night)

We look forward to the 2019 Cav Quest event and would like to thank all of the amazing people involved in making this happen.

Mr Michael Gillingwater and the Music Industry team.

Optiminds

On Saturday the 24th of August, Lisa Williams and I joined two very enthusiastic teams of Cav Road students at John Paul College for the 2019 Brisbane South Optiminds competition. These teams worked extremely hard during the first six weeks of Term 3, largely in their own time, to put together a ten minute presentation in response to their chosen Optiminds challenge. During the day, each team also took part in a ten minute spontaneous challenge that tested their on the spot thinking skills. The following results are certainly something to be proud of!

Cav Road Team 1 (Language Literature Challenge, all Year 11): Jess M, Jamie J, Ezekiel C, Kiara T, Haley T – Spirit of Optiminds award and overall WINNERS. (This team will compete in the Optiminds state finals in October).

Cav Road Team 2 (Science and Engineering Challenge, all Year 8): Roxana K, Ashlee L, Zara L, Henry P, Elijah H, Lucas G, Elliot F – Participation award.

She has also recently been selected as a reserve for the Australian Under 17 European Handball Squad. Well done Georgia!

Student Success – Vaughn P. & Ryder K.

Netball

As term 3 comes to a close, the Inter-school Netball competition also wraps up with Cav Rd performing outstandingly, being crowned Metro Champions in the Year 8, Year 9, Year 10 and Open Divisions and our Year 7 girls finishing runner-up District Champions. The 8’s, 9’s, 10’s and Opens each had to firstly win through from their 8 week District competition, before participating in a knockout Final series against all the other districts in South East Qld. Each week all 4 teams continued to find themselves undefeated until Cav Rd last week hosted the Metro Semi Finals and Grand Finals.

The excitement built throughout the school once all 4 teams won their Semi Final matches in the morning. Although there was some tight contests, Cav amazingly pulled away in every Grand Final and came out on top to be crowned Metro Champions in all 4 divisions! Both the Year 9’s and Open games were even drawn at three quarter time, so it was pretty special watching the girls dig deep and show how much they wanted it, coming away with the win in the end. A phenomenal achievement from all teams this season and certainly one we are all very proud of.

Congratulations girls on your fantastic season and many thanks to Mr Evans, Mrs Farrelly, Ms Mitchell and Mrs Harnischfeger for your great work with your teams.

Check out the Grand Final results listed in the Cav Sport recap.

It can and does affect people of all ages and can occur in children due to drowning, choking, receiving an electric shock or from respiratory related medical conditions such as asthma and anaphylaxis, trauma, poison or congenital abnormalities.

Several organisations, including the Red Cross, recommend all schools consider purchasing a defibrillator as part of their first aid equipment. At present, very few schools in Queensland are equipped with this life saving device. Early defibrillation in conjunction with CPR gives the best chance of survival. Having a defibrillator on hand can dramatically boost survival rates.

At Cavendish Road State High, a defibrillator will now be available in critical emergencies such as cardiac arrests, thanks to local community member Maria Kassos and Shell Australia’s Employee Grants Program. This program provides Shell Australia staff with the opportunity to donate $500 each year to a chosen community group they are passionate about. Maria championed Cavendish Road State High and encouraged fellow colleagues to join her in donating to our community. Thanks to Maria’s hard work we have now received $3000 to put towards this potential lifesaving piece of equipment.

The location of the AED, (Automated external defibrillator) within the Cav Rd community is an important milestone in ensuring the students, staff and the visitors to the school have early access to defibrillation and therefore the best chance of survival in an emergency.

A very heartfelt thanks goes out to Shell for the generous donation which will provide an AED to Cavendish Road State High.
