Principal’s Report
2019 Awards Night. I extend a congratulations to all award recipients and deep gratitude to invited guests and representatives of our school partners, including local primary school Principals, Universities, Community Organisations and Leadership and of course our patrons; past “Cavroadians” who cherish their connection to their old school.
2018 DUX – Lachlan Madge gave a wonderful speech of thanks and inspiration to our students and we wish Lachlan every success in his post-school life.
Thank you also to Ms Van Genderen and Mrs Di Vaira again this year who did an exceptional job organising the awards evening complimented by many parents for its warmth, production and great sense of community on the night.
Our School Review. Parents will be aware that earlier this year our school was reviewed by a team from EQ’s School Improvement Unit. The team consisted of 2 current Principal Peer Reviewers, an Internal Reviewer from the SIU and a reviewer external from EQ. The team wrote a report containing findings, affirmations and recommendations that may assist the school in the next 4 years of continuous improvement. The report can be found on our school website.
There are 9 domains of the review. The review seeks to “look for” visible evidence from across the 9 domains, of “hard” data of school performance, and “soft” data of personal experiences that corroborates the school’s journey and “story” through interviews with over 90 interviewees comprised of students, staff, parents, community, business and other school partners.
The review affirmed Cav is an exceptional school where our practices and performance are sharpening and affirming of the deeper qualities of our school as the reasons why parents seek Cav as their school of choice for their child.
The report is a starting point for and considered in the strategic and operational planning for our school over the next four years until the next scheduled review in 2023.
I have maintained that our future success is not solely reliant on past performance and reputation, egos and any sense of elitism. The measure of our school being a great school is the value add to the lives of the young people enrolled at Cav. This is on-going, reflective and targeted work.
Strategic Planning. Principals identify key messages from the School Review report and follow up consultations with school community stakeholders. The purpose of a Strategic Plan, like any large organization or enterprise is to define aspirations, the “bigger priorities”, identify our key resources, consolidate our progress and identify essential returns on investment into the foreseeable future. I intend to publish a document much like a company prospectus and it will have a corporate – and aspirational “look” befitting our school.
There are particular priorities for our school in the “bigger picture” as directed by the Principal, depending on past performance, school context and needs, parent, community and system aspiration. The work ahead in one school may be very different in depth, breadth and emphasis from another.
Cavendish Road is high performing, has a deep and successful culture for learning and opportunity, our students well engaged; has cohesion across the school and broader community and enjoys very high levels of satisfaction and regard as a result. But we can do even better and there are some things we need to address.
The plan also identifies the means by which we improve school operational and professional matters to achieve them, and which direction, strategies and expected performance indicators of progress and achievement to be identified. Annual Plans that action the initiatives, and how they will be monitored and evaluated are created for each of the four years and are also published on the school website each year.
Transparency and collaboration are key to any plans being successfully implemented. This year I want to hear from students in “where to next” in our school and in the next weeks representative sampling and critical thinking analysis from Year 8 and exiting Year 12 students will take place. It is my intention that the same Year 8 students take part in four years’ time when they are in Year 12.
The draft Strategic Plan will be on the school website. Parents are invited to join us for evening coffee at P&C 19th of November, where the draft Strategic Plan will be presented and inclusions considered in the Strategic Plan 2020-2023. Our school review report is already on the school website. Bookings through SOBS for catering purposes for the P&C on the 19th will open on Tuesday, 5th of November.
Uniform Policy changes for 2020 will make their way into school handbooks and student diaries for 2020. P&C have worked with me the last 18 months to implement incremental changes to school uniform to ensure that not only do students project the unity and high standards of student presentation as long held traditions, but also to ensure student comfort and affordability to parents. Louise McLeish, our P&C Vice President continues to do a fantastic job to ensure students are well ‘kitted out” and value for money to parents.
Guiding and binding legislation. I insist that school policies are well founded and defensible and within the bounds of all current legislative authority and this includes to all reasonable measures of inclusion and non-discrimination. This ensures consistency and certainty and disposes of any need of negotiation and clear procedures of school management of issues arising.
New Human Rights legislation takes effect from 1st of January 2020 where a prohibition on discriminating, amongst other things, due to a declaration of religious belief or practice.
Much discussion has occurred with legal advice that the effect of this impending legislation is that students are still not to wear necklaces of any description, applies to every student. However, subject to health & safety and general presentation compliance, should a student have a genuine wish to wear a necklace that includes a religious symbol as declaration of their faith, belief or practice the student must obtain an exemption from the Principal. In my experience at Cav, I have had only two such instances with which to deal and is not a daily or frequent occurrence.
Clearly, a genuine and supported application must be lodged before an exemption is granted. A form will be available on the Forms & Documents tab on the school website.

The end of the school year is an exciting time for students. But with the summer vacation less than two months away, students may need a little “end of school year motivation”. Helping make the school year wrap up in a productive and positive way will help keep your child motivated, engaged, and ready to learn right through to the end of the year.
The end of year can be very busy with not only school events but also end of year activities in all of those external clubs and schools students participate in. With Year 12 students only having three more weeks, Years 10 & 11 five weeks and the junior school seven weeks, it is highly beneficial to help make sure your child stays motivated until the last day of the year. Now is not the time to take it easy!
There is still time to improve school results. There’s time to study harder. There’s time to put more detail into assignment work. There’s time to prepare for exams. And most importantly, there’s still time to make a difference on the end of year results.
Here’s how to stay motivated (and even improve results) in the time left:
- Use those study planners: The study planners help students say organised throughout the school year and now’s not the time to leave them at the bottom of a school bag.
- Be specific about your goals: Set a goal and work towards it. Whether it is by fine-tuning study skills or working harder in a particular subject, having a goal to work towards makes staying motivated easy.
- Make improvement your mantra: To achieve improved results you have to do the work. To do the work, you have to be motivated, which is challenging at this time of year. Create daily reminders of what the goal is in your planners and work towards them daily.
- See your teachers for help: Always let your teachers know when you don’t understand what you are learning. Your teachers want you to be successful and will help you with your learning.
Make the rest of this year count. The clock may be ticking on the school year, but there is still time to achieve your goals and make this end of year report one you are very proud of!

Student Free Day Activities
Monday 21st October was the final time the Student Free Day will be in Term 4. As part of the OP system, this day has been used for teachers around the state to meet on subject panels and verify the Year 12 work prior to the final piece of assessment completed in school in Term 4.
At Cav Rd, we have many teachers who have participated as members of these panels over the years, which is a demonstration of their quality knowledge and skills. As the students in year 11 move in to year 12 and the new ATAR system progresses, we are equally well placed as a school with a number of teachers participating in the new endorsement and confirmation roles across the state. The change of system also sees the move of the student free day to the Friday of Week 8 in Term 3 next year. In 2020, this means Friday 4th of September will be a student free day.
For those teachers not involved in panel commitments, a comprehensive Professional Development Program was offered at school. This day included guest presenter, Jo Lange working with over 50 staff on Positive and Productive Classrooms. Jo is a behaviour specialist whose program examines the important of recognising the motivations of student behaviour. She leads teachers through a range of practical and supportive strategies to create positive and productive classrooms. Jo also conducted a specialised session for our Beginning Teachers who worked collaboratively with other Beginning Teachers in the region.
We also harnessed the expertise of staff in our school and guest presenters to deliver a range of up to the minute workshops focussing on a variety of ICT skills. A range of 12 sessions were offered over the day including the use of new Microsoft functionality in schools, IT monitoring software for classrooms and online learning to name a few. Many senior staff also completed online courses delivered by the QCAA about Academic Integrity in the New QCE System. Overall, it was a very busy and productive day with a focus on improvement to support quality outcomes.
Attendance
As the end of the year approaches, it is important to remind all Cav Rd families of the importance of regular and consistent attendance to the very last day of term. The school has always focussed on teaching right up to the last day of term and it is important that students be here. I continue to be impressed by the commitment of parents and carers to informing the school of their student’s absences. If you receive a letter in the mail in relation to unexplained absence, please sign the letter and ask your student to return it as a matter of urgency. Alternatively, you can contact the school directly with explanation of absences on attendance@cavendishroadshs.eq.edu.au.

- The P&C is thrilled to announce that we will be gifting 2020 year 12 students with their Year 12 tie. On the first school day of next year each year 12 student will be presented with their tie. This is in appreciation for the contribution the students have made to the school during their time here, the leadership roles they are undertaking as senior students in 2020 and in recognition of the cost of uniforms for families throughout their high schooling. Families of students in year 12 in 2020 will receive an email with details. Please note that if additional or replacement ties are required these will need to be purchased from the uniform shop.
- Our term 4 community event will be the final in the series of three Triple P teenager focused seminars by Dr Karyn Healy – Getting Teenagers Connected. Canteen News
Summer is here and we have a new Summer Menu which is available online through the school webpage. We have a few new healthy items to try. Please remind your child to preorder in the morning before school to guarantee they get their preferred choice. We are open from 8am.
Due to numerous requests from students to protect our environment we would like to encourage students and teachers to bring their own reusable cutlery. This will reduce the amount of plastic single use forks and spoons being used through the canteen. We will no longer give out free cutlery for food items so please make sure to pack it.
The Canteen is proud to announce that we have been shortlisted for the QAST Canteen of the Year Awards this year. We will keep you posted on the results. These nominations are only achievable through the support we receive from the Cav Rd School community and our lovely volunteers. We really need more volunteers to help keep the Canteen a success. We require new volunteers on Mondays and Fridays. Even an hour in the morning before you go to work or before or after drop off is a great help. No money handling is involved. It could be as easy as folding boxes or putting labels on bags for us. No previous experience necessary.

Welcome to term 4 and a very busy couple of weeks for our year 12 students. They are in full rehearsal for their final piece of assessment, a performance piece they have devised, scripted, edited, cast and are now rehearsing for performance on Monday 28th October at 3:30pm in Y23. Everyone is welcome to attend this very clever murder mystery production.

Seven Billion Friends by Grin and Tonic – drama incursion
On Friday week one [11 October] all drama students viewed a professional production by Grin and Tonic theatre company. This was a fast paced interactive live streamed performance based on the on-line dangers and interactions adolescence have with YouTube and gaming. What a clever and dynamic production that engaged and educated the students in a manner they can relate to and understand. Grin and Tonic are an outstanding theatre company who constantly produce theatre for students, about students on an educational and entertaining platform.

German News
It has been a VERY exciting week in the German department with our annual trip to the Oktoberfest as well as our Germany tour information evening.
Oktoberfest for Teens
Last Thursday, 58 Year 9 and 10 ten German students (and three appropriately dressed teachers) enjoyed perfect weather conditions for a celebration of German language and culture at the Oktoberfest for Teens. This festival is on a massive scale and incorporates German students from schools throughout South East Queensland, the Darling Downs and Wide Bay schools. The atmosphere is fantastic and the excursion is a real highlight for our students here at Cav. Congratulations to the students on the wonderful way they represented Cav Road at this event.
Germany Trip 2020
Plans for our trip to Germany are under way with a great turn out for our tour Information evening. We definitely have the numbers to run this exciting tour and I will be in contact soon regarding a deposit. The itinerary looks amazing – from a Rhein river cruise to playing in the snow on Germany’s highest mountain. We will visit Rothenburg, Nurnburg, Munich, Salzburg, Garmish and Frankfurt. Some of our accommodation is even in repurposed castles!

2019 Rugby World Cup Japan
Spirits in Japan were lifted by the great performance of the national team, the Brave Blossoms, in the Rugby World Cup, hosted by Japan. As many areas in Japan struggled with damage caused by Typhoon Hagibis, the Japanese team went on to defeat Scotland and progress to its first ever quarterfinal appearance. Unfortunately, things didn’t go so well against South Africa. The same can be said for Australia in their match against England. The Brave Blossoms even came in ahead of the Wallabies in the world rankings. The excitement surrounding the Rugby World Cup has been infectious and the Japanese are looking forward to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics with great enthusiasm. Japan will be front and centre on the world sporting stage for a long time to come.
Cav Road Teacher Wins Scholarship to Japan
In January 2020, Ms Balfour will travel to Japan to study at the Japan Foundation Kansai Institute in Osaka. She has a three-week scholarship through the DET 2020 Queensland Guest Teacher Program to Osaka. She will spend time gathering teaching materials and developing resources to keep our students up to date with recent social trends, new technology and current popular culture in Japan.
Farewell to Omiya Koryo SHS Long Term Exchange Students
Last month we farewelled Mai Fujisaki, Runa Yamaguchi and Yuya Sekiya. The three students thoroughly enjoyed the extra time spent studying at Cav Road. Mai and Runa are looking forward to welcoming their host sisters, Bethany C and Lucia B, to Omiya Koryo in December. The two Year 11 girls will stay with the families of Mai and Runa for a month during the summer holidays as part of our reciprocal long-term exchange program.
Here are their impressions of their time at Cavendish Road.
Runa- I really enjoyed spending time with my host family doing things such as cooking, watching movies, going shopping and playing games. I could make friends. I could experience many things I cannot do in Japan. It was so much fun that I don’t want to go back to Japan. I am planning to study in Australia when I become a university student. Thank you very much.
Mai- I experienced many things in Australia. For example, I ate Australian food for the first time. The other is that I can talk to a lot of friends and learn English. But I don’t know any English worlds, so I think that I have to study English hard when I go back to Japan.
Yuya- I really enjoyed staying in Australia. I went to various places. For example, I went to the Gold Coast and the city. It was so fun. In school, I made a lot of friends. I was so happy.

Year 9 Food, Textiles and Design News
In the subject, Food, Textiles and Design, the students are learning how to design, produce and evaluate a savoury parcel. In this task, the students must incorporate ingredients from two different cultures, while keeping the parcel healthy, challenging to make, and able to be made within the 70-minute lesson. The savoury parcel also must be visually appealing, tasty, and aromatic. The textures of the parcel should be appropriate for the type of parcel as well. The students must consider the social, ethical and sustainability factors while making the parcel. Some of the ideas the students came up with included: Cheesy Bacon Vegetable parcel, Vegemite scrolls with Italian herbs, Beef and Vegetable parcel with Indian spices and Taco pies. Everyone has worked hard to achieve the criteria for this task. Well done Cavendish Road SHS students. The photographs below are from the final practical lesson.

Year 12 Hospitality Practices: Luncheon Assessment
Last week the Year 12 Hospitality Practices students completed their final practical assessment task. The luncheon was to thank the workers and volunteers that are ‘behind the scenes’ at our school, often contributing many hours of their time. Students were required to research, trial and cost their menu suggestions prior to setting the menu. The ’alternate drop’ three course menu consisted of: Thai Green Chicken Curry with Coconut Pancakes, Creamy Mushroom and Thyme Linguini with Garden Salad, Tiramisu, Citrus Almond Syrup Cake, Tea and Coffee with Honey Almond Biscotti and Chocolate Dipped Strawberries.
Well Done Students!

Mrs Schild - Teacher
Order of Australia Recipient
Kirsten Lin - Order of Australia Association (Queensland Branch) Secondary School Citizenship Award 2019.
Community Prefect, Jiy-Jiun (Kirsten) Lin, was nominated for the Order of Australia Association Secondary School Citizenship Award. The student must be nominated by a teacher at their school. This Award is given by the Queensland Branch of the Order of Australia Association. There are five broad headings in which the student must show commitment to their school community.
- Participation in social service activities at school
- Engagement with the community outside the school
- Involvement in the school’s co-curricular life such as music, sports, societies and clubs
- Examples of leadership shown by the student in school life (formal and/or informal)
- The teacher must also comment on the student’s character
Applications were received for over 100 students throughout Queensland. Only 12 Awards are given. The organisers said that the commitment and work done by the applicants was extremely high. Students from 12 schools throughout Queensland were at The Old Legislative Council Chambers, Parliament House on Friday 20 September to accept their Award.
Kirsten’s mother, and two Great Aunts, along with Richard Usher (our Principal – who gave the address on behalf of the State’s Principals, Ms Van Genderen (Deputy Principal – Year 11 & 12), Mrs Potter (Year 12 Dean) and myself (HoD of International/LOTE) attended the ceremony. The students accomplishments were read out – we have some remarkable young Queenslanders, in our State’s Year 12 cohort. The students accepted their Award from The Governor of Queensland, His Excellency, The Honourable Paul de Jersey AC.
Kirsten was born in Taiwan but her family is living and working in South Africa. She joined Cavendish Road State High School in Year 9 (2016) as an international student. Kirsten has always been involved in the school community as well as with her Church Youth group. She did not know until two weeks prior to the ceremony that she had been nominated and had won. It was a complete surprise for her. I asked her to write an article for the newsletter. Please congratulate her on this wonderful achievement.
Ms Masselos - HoD International/LOTE

Kirsten Lin – Order of Australia Association (Queensland Branch) Secondary School Citizenship Award Recipient 2019
I never knew I would come to Australia to finish my secondary education. Before coming Australia to me was just land in the middle of the ocean where kangaroos hopped in red deserts and koalas in eucalyptus trees, but there was much more than that. The decision to come was very spontaneous and I never knew I would have such a great time in Australia. It was very hard to leave South Africa and I often reminisce; however, I grew to love Australia over time. Choosing to come to Cavendish Road State High School was one of the best decisions I made; it consists of friendly students, inspirational teachers and programs that allow you to excel in what you are passionate in. The morning of my first day at Cav I was a little nervous that students might exclude me because of my race or make fun of my accent, but none of that happened. Coming to Cav allowed me to be myself. It is a community that takes in in all people and embraces diversity. I never felt like I needed to pretend to be someone else in my time at Cav. Cav is more than a community, but a family that supports you to be your best self.

On Saturday 12th October, Charlie F in year 12 attended the STUFFIT film festival finals at the Nambour Cinema after successfully progressing through two earlier rounds of competition.
He was up against six other contenders from around the world – NZ, USA, Russia, and Australia. The competition was high, and most of the work was done by large film schools (or students attending them), whereas his film was more or less done completely independently by himself with his own equipment (writing, filming, editing, etc.). There were approximately 70 people at the event on Saturday night, including representatives from parliament.
Charlie’s film won him first place for the documentary category.
All of the films across the various categories were shown first – 5 hours’ worth of student films - and then the awards ceremony began. Charlie said that the award ceremony was very good but very scary because he knew the competition was so high; however, he had an amazing experience overall.
Charlie’s documentary can be viewed online for free:
It is a beautifully artistic piece that clearly demonstrates his dedication and interest in this field.
Congratulations to Charlie for all of his effort and achievement. His win is definitely a strong indicator of his future success in the film and media industry. It’s great to see a young man so passionate and inspired for his future.

Optiminds
Optiminds State Finals
On the 12th and 13th of October, Lisa Williams and I joined a team of five very enthusiastic Year 11 students (Jess M, Kiara T, Jamie J, Haley T and Zeke C) at the Optiminds state finals at UQ. On the Saturday, the students took part in an Ideas Market where they presented an initiative that they wanted to implement in order to create a better future. The Cav Road team presented the #sharethecare initiative which was social media campaign aimed at promoting awareness for the global refugee crisis. Their long term vision for this was to create a not-for-profit organisation and app that would help people around the world to donate resources to this cause.
On the Sunday, each team at finals received a new challenge, similar to the one that they had received at the Optiminds regionals except that this time instead of having six weeks to prepare a response, they had only three hours. The end result for the Cav Road team was excellent and they received a lot of positive feedback from both the judges and the other teams in their category. Overall, the entire team represented the Cav Road community exceptionally and certainly did the school and themselves very proud.

Congratulations to all students and staff for their involvement in Interschool Sport throughout both the Summer and Winter seasons. We have been exceptionally represented in 2019 with over 40 teams participating throughout the year in District Interschool Sport. You have done yourselves proud, and we at Cav Road are very proud of you all. Sport is so valuable to our young people, not only for their physical health, but across their social and personal levels of health too. It allows young people to develop friendships, provides a sense of unity and it challenges them both as a person and as an athlete.
Student Success – Kameryn B
Kameryn B (Year 7) continues her high school debut and stellar sporting year. In late September, her Metropolitan East Team Met East took out the U12 Rugby League State Championships. They won the Grand Final 20-10 against Met West Region. Well done to the Mighty Navy & White Team.
Kameryn’s Metropolitan East Cricket team competed in the State Championships in early October. Met East finish 2nd at these State Championships, losing to Metro North in the Grand Final. Kameryn was selected in the Queensland Schoolgirls Team after this tournament.
Not only has Kameryn shown her sporting success this year across a range of sports, feedback has commended Kameryn on her leadership, coachability and support of her teammates.
Congratulations Kameryn on your success!
Summer Olympics Games 2020
Fifty-six years after having organised the Olympic Games, the Japanese capital will be hosting a Summer edition for the second time, from 24 July to 9 August 2020. The Games in 1964 radically transformed the country. According to the organisers of the event in 2020, the Games of the XXXII Olympiad of the modern era will be “the most innovative ever organised, and will rest on three fundamental principles to transform the world: striving for your personal best (achieving your personal best); accepting one another (unity in diversity); and passing on a legacy for the future (connecting to tomorrow)”.
Aligning with the reforms advocated by Olympic Agenda 2020, the Tokyo Games will use as many existing competition venues as possible, namely those built for the Games in 1964, such as the prestigious Nippon Budokkan for judo, the Baji Koen Park for equestrian events, and the Yoyogi National Gymnasium for handball. The Tokyo National Stadium, where the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and athletics competitions will be staged, will be completely revamped and replaced by a new arena.
Japan has been an Olympic land since the Summer Games of 1964, which were the first to be staged in Asia. In 2020, the country will host its fourth Games, if we include the Winter Games of 1972 in Sapporo and 1998 in Nagano.
“The important thing in the Olympic Games is not the winning but the taking part. The important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle.”
Pierre De Coubertin - Founder of the Olympic Games 1898

Queensland All Schools
Cavendish Road SHS once again had a very successful QLD All Schools tournament. We were one of only three schools to have all of our teams qualify for this year’s Finals Series. Throughout the round games, all of our teams continued to improve and build on the momentum produced through our Academy classes during the school year. Our 15 Girls, 15 Boys and Open Mixed teams were undefeated through their pool games and produced a very good standard of Touch. Unfortunately most of our luck ran out early on Finals Day with the 13 Boys and 15 Girls teams meeting the eventual champions in the Round of 16 in Coombabah SHS and Keebra Park SHS respectively; and our 13 Girls also bowed out in the Round of 16 as well.
Our 15 Boys had high hopes of going deep into the tournament but with the unfortunate rain event happening throughout Saturday, our Quarter Final opponents (and eventual Runners Up) played to the conditions better than we were able to manage and we were defeated in a drop off to a very good Wavell SHS team.
However, our 18s Mixed team was expected to be our most successful team in this tournament and they performed to their potential, finishing as Runners Up after losing the Grand Final in a drop off to Emmaus College, Rockhampton. Congratulations to Renae N who won best female player in the final for the Mixed Opens, a well-deserved accolade.
All of our students were excellent role models for our school and great ambassadors for our Academy. Throughout the tournament they displayed key values such as honesty, integrity, discipline, sportsmanship and fair play.
We would like to thank all the parents that attended the weekend to support all our players and teams. A special mention to Mr Darren Beebe, Mr Michael Batchelor, Mr Strak Kasonovic, Ms Kathy Gallagher and Mr Michael Lynch for coming out over the weekend and supporting the Green Machine. Another bigger thanks goes to Mr Ash Cross, Mr Chris Loth and Nathaniel Wong who trained, coached and encouraged every player every minute of every game. We cannot thank you enough!
National All Schools
The National Schools Cup event was once again a success for our Cav Rd Touch Academy. While we were unable to be as successful on the field as we always hoped we could be, the amount of improvement, team work, friendship and camaraderie amongst the players is always pleasing to see and shows that they're heading in the right direction as student athletes.
Finishing Positions
Our 7/8 Girls team had 7 games and came away with 3 wins, 3 losses and a draw; and they finished in 5th position, narrowly missing out on a finals position.
Our 9/10 Girls division was split across two pools and our team had 6 games and ended up with 2 wins and 4 losses. They ended in 9th position and based on the results of the play-off matches, could have been higher had we been placed in the other pool.
Our 9/10 Boys continued to improve as the carnival went on but only finished with 3 wins from their 7 games, with 4 losses including a drop-off in their semi-final. They finished in 4th position overall.
Well done to all who competed and thanks to all the families who made the effort to get our kids to and from the event. Also, a big thank you to our awesome coaches Nathaniel Wong, Mr Cross and Mr Loth for doing such a magnificent job! Your help and support made this week run smoothly without any hiccups!!

USA Opportunity Tour
Starting on the 15th of September, sixteen Cavendish Road students went to the USA. This program, the USA Opportunity tour, was a trip devoted to exploring opportunities beyond our immediate horizons. Guiding us on this tour were two teachers, Miss Signorini and Mr Caruso, and a Student Horizons representative, Jasmine.
We first visited New York City where we were able to immerse ourselves into the busy life of a New Yorker. Our daily schedules consisted predominantly of “tourist venues” such as Central Park, Mid-Town (guided tour), the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, the 9/11 memorial and Wall Street (guided tour). We were also extremely fortunate to view a Broadway production of Aladdin, and an NFL game between the New York Jets and the Cleveland Browns. A more personalised experience was our guided tour of New York University and Columbia University where we were able to learn about potential options for our future education. We also received a business presentation informing us about life changing opportunities in relation to overseas travel.
Our next stop was the Nation’s capital, Washington D.C. On our way we stopped at Princeton University for another guided tour. Upon arrival in D.C, we had an entrepreneurship presentation on the George Washington University campus. The next day we explored the National Mall and the Smithsonian museums. A number of political marches took place making it a big day to be in the Nation’s capital. Our final stop was San Francisco. A city full of life but only a limited time to explore. In the short amount of time we had remaining, we were able to enjoy some of the city’s most renowned attractions. On the “touristy” side, we explored Pier 39 (Fisherman’s Wharf), Alcatraz prison, Sausalito, walked the Golden Gate Bridge, and spent our final savings at the San Francisco Premium Outlet Mall. On the more informative side, we visited the Apple Park Visitor Centre, the Intel Museum, and of course Stanford University.
This trip truly opened our minds up to opportunities beyond our comfort zones, inspiring us to think bigger when it comes to our education.

Beyond the Broncos Community Event

Our school was very fortunate to host the Beyond the Broncos Community Event on 16 October 2019. It was a great opportunity to celebrate the success of the Beyond the Broncos Program at Cav Rd, by recognising achievements of students, staff, volunteers and community members.
A number of special guests including Beyond the Broncos Ambassadors Justin Hodges, Scott Prince and Taniesha Atkinson attended. Business and Community Organisations including Spotless, QUT, the Australian Defence Force, and Department of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Policy also attended to speak to students about opportunities and support their organisations are able to provide.
All Year 7-12 students participated in creating an art mural which will be displayed in the Indigenous room.
Congratulations to students Jude S, Eva H, Lilly P, Sylvia M and Tahtiyana T who received special awards to acknowledge their leadership and exceptional effort and behaviour during 2019. All Beyond the Broncos Program students in Year 10-12 were given a badge to wear which represented the Program, and is a reminder of the Broncos values - united, accountable, respectful and grateful.
Cavendish Road SHS would like to thank Beyond the Broncos for the wonderful program they provide for our students. Students, parents and staff are very appreciative of the guidance and opportunities provided by the dedicated and enthusiastic Beyond the Broncos staff.

Visiting Occupational Therapists
Dear Cavendish Road Community,
Eleven weeks ago, three student occupational therapists, Hannah, Payton and Rachel from Griffith University began their non-traditional placement at Cavendish Road State High School where they worked among the Wellbeing Team for two days a week.
“We were excited to understand how occupational therapists could work within a school environment to provide support from an occupational perspective. We entered our placement wanting to understand what the school was doing successfully to support the students as well as finding areas that may benefit from alterations to improve school experiences. We decided to conduct a school-wide survey aimed at teachers and students to help identify the challenges being faced and the positives they experience at home and within school. After collecting the data it was evident that many students were struggling to find the balance between school and home life, stress management and completing school work. We conducted a focus group consisting of 12 students from all year levels to further uncover the school experience from a student’s perspective. From this, we concluded that stress was a common struggle faced by Cavendish Road students despite both age and gender, with teachers also struggling. Using our occupational therapy skills and perspective, we are currently in the process of creating interventions that will be implemented in the school to further assist teachers and students in understanding and managing their stress. Our time at the school is coming to an end, but we are very thankful for the pleasant experience here at Cavendish and we hope you all have a positive end to the year and overcome the stress!”
Kind regards
Hannah Perez

Duke of Edinburgh
Award Leader’s Report
As the third trimester has kicked off for the year, the Duke of Edinburgh Award at Cav Rd has seen success. Twelve new and eager students have signed up to participate, with an additional five students officially completing their Bronze Awards and moving onto their Silver. These students have been presented Awards on Awards night for their dedication. Congratulations Conor, Maddie, Billie, Grace, and Jess.
The Duke of Ed participants have created their own self-driven expectations to continue their hard work over the holidays by participating in various physical recreation, skill and community service tasks. These students should be commended on their hard work thus far in their Awards.
This term, students have made the decision to work on a community service project which raises awareness and provides items for women and young girls in need within our local community. I commend them for their dedication to and understanding of such a tough issue and reputable charity. Please read below for more information about ‘Share the Dignity’.

Share the Dignity - #ItsInTheBag Campaign
Next week marks the start of our school’s Share the Dignity #ItsInTheBag campaign. Students are encouraged to donate everyday products for females who are without a home or suffering domestic violence to help improve their lives. Specifically, Share the Dignity ensures that everyone in our community is afforded the dignity that so much of us take for granted.
The Cav Rd Duke of Ed team is asking the people within our community to donate items that are both the everyday essentials and extra items, which are non-perishables. Items include sanitary items (tampons, pads, cups, and period-proof underwear), toothbrushes/paste, nail polish, roll on deodorant, etc.
It is also important that we receive handbags and other bags for us to package these items for you.
Students, teachers and other members of the Cav Rd community need to ensure that they donate unopened and packaged items, as opened it¬¬¬ems will not be accepted.
When:
Donations will be accepted up and until Friday 15th November (Week 6)
Where:
Donation boxes will be located in the Resource Centre, Student Services, T Block and Y Block

Kokoda Youth Foundation Program
Jared H – Year 11
Year 11 student Jared H took his Kokoda Challenge one step further by taking part in a Kokoda Youth Foundation Program in PNG over the spring vacation. Jared was a member of a 30 strong group of young people who lived rough and braved the elements and trekked the infamous Kokoda Track over 12 days.
Jared also learned of the various stages of the battle and withdrawal that has a personal connection to a great uncle who experienced the war-time track that many veterans kept to themselves for most of their lives such was the impact on them.
As well as the physical and mental toughness required to complete, the trek is in honour of Australian diggers who were forced back in retreat from a Japanese war-time advance through the jungles of New Guinea. This is a true trek with no home comforts where these young people had some insight into the hardship. The retreat through torturous conditions is military folk lore in Australia, made remarkable by surviving and being pursued by a well-equipped foe, and the tenacity where mates helped mates under such duress. Kokoda was significant to the war-time psyche of Australians who for in 1942 matters looked very grim.
His membership of the Cav. Road Kokoda Challenge Team added further inspiration and Jared spent 6 months in preparation for this experience. The trek can be a life-changing experience for some and Jared has come away not only in awe but motivated to continue his personal service to Landcare with National Parks & Wildlife, surfing events with Gold Coast Disabled Surfers Association, ANZAC Day Ceremonies, assisting at Foundation events.
