Principal’s Report
Success in 2020. Given such a challenging year that beset us all, 2020 has to be a standout year for our school and school community. Throughout and across our school community: parents, students and teachers, the determination and tenacity to not allow this year to be ‘lost’ to our students was remarkable. Success has been re-defined.
Sure, many of the larger group collaborations and celebrations were put on hold, but quality learning was not halted, nor was the enthusiasm for learning and working harder to maintain the social connection which is so much a part of the education experience. This year has been exhausting, stressful, challenging and in so many ways rewarding and memorable.
Last year we had our school review from which we gleaned three significant themes of our school’s character and aspirations to always improve. Those 3 themes; Visibly vibrant culture, Visible Teaching & Learning, and Visible Learning Growth – for EVERY child, were captured and progressive plans in place. In the nature of being a “Cavroadian” is our aspiration to be an exemplary school. Not excellent. But exemplary.
Reflecting on 2020, rhetorical questions that students and parents can answer from their own experience are: how deep is our school culture of being positive, productive, focussed, and inclusive and caring of others? How great was the determination of teachers to teach and students to learn whether at home, in catch-up mode upon return, and to learn new skills of teaching and learning because that is what was required to get the job done? How have our students grown not only in their mastery of curriculum, but in themselves?
This year we continued to reap rewards from hard work and tenacity in sports, academic and cultural activities. Our students lived up to and surpassed our aspirations for commitment to the 4 pillars of learning at Cav, particularly in regards to community, and conducted themselves with commendation living up to the 5 C’s – Commitment, Consideration, Courtesy, Cooperation & Challenge.
Looking to 2021. Our school continues to progress, and underscore that striving to be exemplary. It is in the power of every student to seek the better person inside and I trust these are the sentiments taken away from Cav by our graduating students into their next phase of life’s journey.
Exemplary schools. I do a lot of reading in the education leader space and some schools are doing wonderful and great things in education. I also think we do so too at Cav. I still hear talk of developing “21st century skills” in our students. It is remarkable how generalizations or labels can stick – especially in this case where we are entering the third decade and well into this century. I am yet to see a definition of meaning and frankly some of the intellectual product from ‘blue sky’ thinking is lacking. Is it the ability to design and operate a flying car? Is it to be entrepreneurial, create a ‘start up’ business or a gadget or App that has a shelf life of 3 months, or is it the creation of new physical spaces where ‘new thinking’ takes place? The ‘gig’ economy? If it means charging our students to think, problem solve, apply their skills and knowledge and be adaptable and continue to learn then we prepare our students for the mind set required. The rest is up to them as it should be and continue to be agile and adaptable as the world changes, flexes and bends to global change, new and emerging technologies that close the door on some occupations and open doors on others.
Since ancient Greek and Roman scholarship, exemplary education and schools have always had teachers and curriculum that challenge minds in the disciplines of study, in the arts, maths, sciences and humanities. Where students acquire and test their skills of athleticism, mental agility and creativity. These features resonate at Cav Road. The world, nation, society and communities will need doctors, engineers, dentists, builders, electricians, plumbers, teachers, scientists, artists and dreamers – and “Cavroadians” will be exemplary.

Congratulations to all of our Year 12 students who graduated from Cavendish Road State High School this morning. Resilience is a very important human quality and has certainly been a “buzzword” for this group of students. The first cohort to commence the first full year of prep, the first to leave primary school at the end of year 6 and commence high school in year 7, the first to study under the new QCE and program of internal and external assessments and, finally, the first to exit with ATAR scores to gain enrolment in tertiary studies. Then, in 2020, COVID-19 represented a completely new challenge causing a range of emotions for Year 12s as they came to understand how it would affect them.
At every juncture, the Year 12s have demonstrated incredible resilience to continue to focus on the immediate challenge in front of them and to let the authorities determine what their path would look like. These challenges have included the sudden lock down of school, transition to online learning, the removal of an assessment item and variations to the way their subject results are calculated.
Our Year 12 students are to be congratulated and should feel incredibly proud with the way they have navigated all of these challenges across their years. They are now more than ready to leave the familiarity of school life and be successful in whatever they take on next.
Now that the Year 12 students have finished all of their assessment, the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) and the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) are working to the deadline of 9am on Saturday 19 December when all student results will be available online. Key activities to occur in these next 4 weeks are
Marking of an external assessment – this commenced very soon after the first day of exams with many exams to still be finalised.
- Calculating of overall assessment results out of 100 – Each student’s overall assessment result is calculated by adding their internal and external assessment results. The total is on a scale from 1 to 100.
- Adjusting the procedures for 2020 – COVID-19 has resulted in changes to senior secondary schooling in 2020 that require adjustments to the QCAA’s procedures for calculating final subject results in General subjects.
- QCAA subject experts to determine A – E cut-offs for each subject which will be included on Senior Statements.
- QTAC then calculates the ATAR scores.
The final subject results for Year 12 students will be available in their myQCE Student Portal The ATARs will be available at the link below In both websites, the students will need to pre-register at both websites.

I wish the Year 12 students every success in their futures.

End of Year
It is hard to believe that the end of the year is so close. Many of you are making plans for 2021 already; it may be the last year of school for your students, or the move from junior to senior, or the start of implementing SET plans for the final 2 years of school. It is important in these last few weeks that students remain focused and on task to ensure they maximise their learning opportunities and outcomes for whatever their next step in the journey is. I wish everyone a safe, restful and enjoyable holiday period and look forward to seeing everyone in 2021.
Deans 2021
An integral part of the fabric of Cav Rd is the wellbeing framework, in particular our structure of having year level Deans. It gives me great pleasure to announce the 2021 Deans to the school community. Congratulations to:
Year 7 – Ms Jessica
Roberts
Year 8 – Mr Mitch Evans
Year 9 – Mr Peter Brent
Year 10 – Mrs Sarah Potter
Year 11 – Mr Paul Batchler
Year 12 – Mrs Vicki Schafer
This fantastic team are being led by Mr Faulkner in planning for the launch of our new revised wellbeing framework in 2021. This is also the time to acknowledge Ms Tracy Laidlaw and Ms Lisa Williams who are leaving their Dean roles this year. I know that many of you would have had contact over the years with these two fantastic teachers. Their compassion and care when working with our younger students has been so valued and we will all miss them in these roles. Thanks Tracy and Lisa!

Meetings
We had the last meeting of an eventful 2020 on the 20 October. Our next and first meeting of 2021 will be on Tuesday 16 February at 7pm. Look out for details after the Christmas holidays – we might even be able to meet in person.
Uniform Shop and Back to School:
- “Back to School” Uniform Shop hours and fitting appointment details have been emailed to families and updates will be posted on our Cav Rd P&C Facebook.
- Key points:
- Please pre-order wherever possible. This saves time and is so much more efficient for everyone.
- The Online Sizing Chart can be found on the Uniform Shop page of the school website.
- Order the wrong size no problem, it is quick and easy to swap an item over to another size during fittings or as an exchange after it’s been tried on at home. Please leave the swing tags on and keep the packaging so we can put the returned item back into stock. - Next year will see the transition to more of the new uniform items
such as green shirts with school logos for boys and the new style sports
uniforms.
- Looking for a bargain consider the valid (until the end of 2021) yet outgoing styles which have been discounted.
- Refer to the School Uniform Policy for more details - Second hand uniforms – if we’re saying goodbye to you this year or
welcoming you, a reminder of the options for buying / selling used
uniforms:
- Uniforms can be donated to the uniform shop or student services. These uniforms are provided to families in need as required, with any excess stock being sold in the uniform shop with proceeds going to the P&C.
- To purchase these second-hand uniforms please attend the uniform shop in person, there are no online orders and we remind you that stocks are limited
- There is also a private facebook group for families to buy and sell second hand uniforms, This is administered by the P&C but we do not take responsibility for the transactions. To apply for membership go to the Cav Rd P&C Facebook page, look for the 2nd Hand Uniform group under “groups”, click “join group” and answer the questions. An administrator will approve as soon as possible.
Other good stuff:
- On World Teacher’s Day – celebrated in Queensland on the last Friday in October – the P&C once again teamed up with the Wellbeing Department. The P&C funded a coffee van to provide a free coffee to all the hardworking school staff, while the Wellbeing department provided sweet treats. We loved seeing the smiles on the teachers’ faces. Thank you to Mr Faulkner, Chappy Jules and team for working with us to bring some joy to our amazing teachers and staff.
We thank everyone for their support in 2020 and wish you happy holidays. We look forward to seeing you in the New Year.
See you all at the next meeting!

Year 12 2020 Graduates
This morning, we farewelled our Year 12 seniors for 2020. We enjoyed a beautiful evening at the Formal which was held on Friday 13 November at Cloudland and a very emotional graduation ceremony held here in the Alan Sampson Sports Centre.
Final Results
From 9 am on Saturday 19 December, students will be able to access their final subject results, Senior Statements and QCEs in their learning accounts via the Student Portal, accessed via the myQCE website at https://myqce.qcaa.qld.edu.au.
The electronic versions of SEP documents in students’ learning accounts are official — they contain a unique validation code and digital signature to confirm they are authentic. Students are able to download the documents as PDFs to provide to a third party in electronic or print format, and print their own copy.
Students may also request a print copy of their SEP from the QCAA. Requests received by 31 January 2021 will be posted during March 2021. Print copies are free the first time they are issued.
Students receiving the QCIA Students who receive a QCIA will automatically receive a print copy of their SEP in the mail after 19 December — they do not need to request a print copy via the learning account.
Register for the Student Portal
Year 12 students must ensure that they have registered for the student portal prior to completing Year 12 on Friday 20 November. Students need to log in and update their email address (must be a personal email address) and mobile telephone number. Students also need to ensure that they have checked with Senior Schooling (Office in K16) to confirm that the home address we have listed in student management is the correct postal address.
Students can access the Student Portal on the myQCE website. They will need their 10-digit LUI number to register (see Mrs Anderson in K16 if required). After students have registered, they will be able to log in with the email and the password nominated.
How to access ATARs
ATARs will be available via the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) on Saturday 19 December. The ATAR is an online release only, and the only way students can access their ATAR is by signing up to the ATAR Portal via QTAC's website. Students will need to enter their name (as shown in their QCAA learning account), date of birth, LUI and email address. QTAC's 'how to' video will step students through the sign up process.
ATAR enquiries can be directed to our Guidance Officer – Mr Rob Stewart.
I would like to congratulate the class of 2020. I am so proud to have worked with and supported our Year 12 students though what has been a very difficult year for them. A final, fond farewell to our seniors

You would think after carrying out the role of Year 12 Dean/Coordinator on six occasions that I would be used to saying farewell to our graduating cohort but the reality is that saying goodbye to people you care about is never easy. This year, it is particularly difficult to bid the class of 2020 farewell because they are a group of young men and women who have touched my heart in such a profound way. I have the upmost respect and admiration for them because they have prevailed in creating success stories in the midst of a crisis that rocked our world. They have maintained perspective, remained positive and been fully committed to finding joy in each moment. It is this resilience, determination and optimism that will secure their success in the future.
And so, to you the graduates of 2020, I say this – what an absolute privilege it has been to work with you and walk alongside you throughout this crazy yet wonderful year. My life is richer for having played a small part in each of your lives but now, it is time for you to venture beyond the gates of Cav Road and create a remarkable life for yourselves. On behalf of all staff and students, I wish each one of you much luck and great happiness in the future. Stay safe, be good and hold onto all of the wonderful memories you have created as some of the finest Cavroadians I have had the pleasure of meeting.
Au revoir!

Year 12 Formal
Friday 13 November 2020
Surrounded by the finery of Cloudland, the 2020 Year 12 cohort celebrated their final year of schooling at the Cavendish Road State High School Senior Formal. The young ladies and gentlemen looked absolutely fantastic in their outfits and it was a joy to celebrate the successful completion of their high school education. This group of extraordinary young adults are Cav Rd’s first Year 7’s, and we had many staff clamouring for a chance to be able to be a part of their Formal and celebrate with them on the night.
It was a very enjoyable night with good food, great music and many moves being dropped on the dance floor. The students even managed to get many staff members up for a bit of a boogie!
Our official photographers from Your Photography did a splendid job with their roaming cameras capturing the students arriving at our stunning venue, as well as many individual and group photos of the students in all of their splendour.

Junior Schooling
Junior Secondary Positive Behaviour Systems 2020
It has been a challenging year for all of our students during online learning and then transitioning back into ‘normal’ schooling. Introducing positive behaviour systems in our Junior school has provided them with a wonderful contrast to the challenges they have faced. Our incredible students have demonstrated resilience and positivity throughout this time and we are delighted to able to acknowledge these attributes in our Junior School.
Cavroadian Ticket System
In Term 3 we introduced the ‘Cavroadian Ticket System’ which aims to acknowledge and celebrate students who demonstrate the 5Cs. Teachers issue students with tickets to recognise and reward the Cavroadian behaviours we value here at Cav. Students are recognised on year parades and rewarded with prizes as they accumulate tickets throughout the term. This positive behaviour system has been a huge success in growing a visibly vibrant culture in our Junior School. It has been a wonderful way of showing our students how much we value them as part of our school community.
Wet’n’Wild Reward Days 2020
We are very excited to announce, thanks to the tremendous financial support from our P & C, that we are inviting our Junior students to a celebration day at the end of this year. The objective of these excursions is to recognise and reward students for making it through one of the most difficult years of their education to date. We wish to celebrate the high standards of behaviour and effort of our students in Junior school. It is a fun and positive way to finish the year celebrating their success as a school community. Permission forms have been issued last week and need to be returned to our Finance window by Friday 27th November.
Please note the following dates in your calendars.
Week 10: Monday 7 December – Years 7
and 8 Celebration Day
Week 10: Tuesday 8 December – Year 9 Celebration Day
School Visit – Greenslopes State School

I just wanted to share with you the photos from our primary school visit to Greenslopes SS this morning. You would have been so unbelievably proud of the presentation delivered by our 2021 Junior Leaders to the Year 6 students at Greenslopes. They were outstanding!! Such incredible young men and women.
Nicola Larmore - A/HOD Junior Secondary
The Arts – Drama, Media Music Visual Arts
The opening of the Performing Arts Centre in February triggered excitement with wonderful possibilities envisaged with the delivery of Arts programs this superb facility would allow us to produce. I can’t wait to see the endless possibilities that this fabulous, first class environment become fully operational. Optimistically 2021 may allow just that. We are in the process of planning a full Creative Arts program 2021, wait and see, fingers crossed. An added bonus is the future construct of two Visual Arts spaces that will faithfully accommodate the full integration of the Arts, which addresses contemporary, relevant 21st Century ‘inquiry based learning’.
2020 will be remembered as a year of challenge.
The challenge, for all our Arts students and their teachers, in particular Year 12’s navigating new modes of assessment, and external examination preparation now allows me to reflect on what an amazing cohort we’ve had the pleasure to guide in their academic journey this year. Despite all the bumps along the way, Cav Road delivered a very successful year, and some exceptional outcomes. How very proud we are of the resilience, commitment displayed, particularly by our senior students. We wish them well on their post school pathways.
The Arts ability to display, perform and interact with audiences was severely truncated, however inventive, creative Arts staff arrived with a variety of solutions to showcase the exceptional talent of our students.
The Creative Arts Academy Year 7 will engage in a day incursion 2 November, 2020.
Students will engage in a Drama workshop (Comedy) and Visual Art (Ceramic workshop). So very pleased to be able to reconnect with this group of students.
Congratulations to Annalise Hoskins and Carson Blyth who have recently been appointed Arts prefects for 2021. I look forward to working with you both in what I hope will be a refreshed ‘new normal’ academic year that allows delivery of our creative programs.

DRAMA
YEAR 11 COLLABORATION WITH HOLLAND PARK SS
Year 11 students completed their 6 week creative immersion with the year 5 students this week and what a wonderful program with very enthusiastic and talented young students. Each year 5 class has produced four amazing group productions which include; a news report with Anchor and on location Interviewer and Interviewees, Freeze Frames, Performance Poetry and a group script. The work the year 5’s have written is incredible and I am looking forward to seeing their productions come to life.
Thank you Holland Park for the opportunity to create some real theatre from an excursion to Pullenvale Creek. Good luck to you all when you present on Monday 16 November.
YEAR 9 DOCUMENTARY DRAMA
Year 9 students are very busy creating their own Documentary Drama productions from current and relevant social issues. Each small group must write, direct and perform in the production that brings to life an article published in the local or state paper or on-line.
YEAR 7&8 PRESENTING ASSESSMENT

Students have been reading two plays in class; BURNT & LOCKIE LEONARD. These plays discuss social issues relevant to teens which will then be used as Presenting and Scriptwriting assessment. We wish the students all the best with their first Drama assessments.
CREATIVE INDUSTRIES DRAMA INCURSION 26 NOV

Our second incursion occurs on November 26 and students will be immersed into comedy. These students’ immersion into Trestle Masks in March, and now comedy, will ensure a well-rounded foundation for the continued practice of The Arts.
Nic Angelo is a NIDA Graduate and trained in Paris at the World Famous Phillipe Gaullier School of Clowning.
Nic brings these skills in a palatable way combining games and skill building leading towards a dynamic, and hilarious performance from the students. The confidence that will be gained along with the skills taught will make this a workshop to remember for life.
THEATRE SPORTS WINNERS TERM 4
A huge congratulations to our winners of the Term 4 Theatre Sports Tournament, The Peanut Demons! Miss Banks is looking forward to see you all for new teams and new tournaments come 2021.

MEDIA ARTS
YEAR 8 FILM & TV
Students have been exploring the ins and outs of film-making this term. From storyboarding to final product, there have been some outstanding creative visions coming out of this cohort. Students will showcase their final products at “The Cavroadies,” where awards will be given to some of our finest auteurs. Picture below of Noya and Ansuiya showing off their storyboards.

In Media Arts students were asked to produce a digital narrative series, which demonstrated their understanding of Photographic and Photoshop techniques. Using their own photographs as a starting point students were to digitally manipulate these images to portray a narrative based on the theme “Land of the Giants”. During this task students have demonstrated not only their skills in how to take the perfect shot but also gain an understanding of how a photograph can be used to tell a story. It has been an absolute pleasure watching these students turn into budding photographers and digital wizards.

MUSIC
On the Friday prior to the external exams, our Year 12 cohort were treated with a concert of epic proportions! Music students banded together outside the Performing Arts Centre to send off our Year 12s in merry spirits.
\

Live studio recording sessions have been in fashion at the Performing Arts Centre, with opportunities for students to produce high quality audio and video recordings. Performers and music technology students alike have collaborated to make meaningful memories for our Year 12s.
INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC

The school instrumental music program has done an incredible job in providing recorded performance items for assembles, awards presentations, and Year 12 Graduation. COVID restrictions have certainly not tarnished their enthusiasm to bring some much needed joy to the Peer Support screens of Cav Road’s students during our ‘alternative’ approach to full school assemblies this year.
Mr Lashmar and Miss Robson extend their thanks to all of the bands (Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Stage Band, Wind Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, and the Junior and Senior String Orchestras) for their efforts in rehearsing, and recording pieces.

VISUAL ART
Year 9 Art

Year 9 Art – Surrealism
As part of the Year 9 Art unit 'Viewpoints' we explored the art movement of Surrealism through different media approaches such as collage, painting and photographic. Given the 'Surreal' circumstances of 2020, the students produced some strong personal work that reflected the larger themes of a changing world view. Some images are disturbing, others whimsical, comical and dreamlike - all the tenets that express the overarching ideals of Surrealism.

Year 10 Art Senior Preparation
Year 10 Art Images 1 to, 7
This term the year 10 Art Senior Preparation students have been exploring the human form through ceramics. Students were asked to consider aspects of their life, drawing inspiration from places, animals, beliefs, culture, imagination and dreams. Inspirational artists were also selected to draw inspiration from as students were also asked to consider symbols, iconography that could represent themselves.
Students have not only shown skills and knowledge in the use of clay but have also shown great commitment in their designs and ideas. Students are now waiting to have their works to dry, so they can be ready to paint for final assessment. It has been a pleasure teaching these talented students and I cannot wait to see what they submit for their final work.

Business
Market Day
On Monday 2 November our Year 10 Certificate III in Business students ran one of the best Market Days that our school has seen resulting in a profit for every student.
Students spent the past semester preparing for Market Day by first learning about the fundamentals of establishing a business. Once they had the knowledge they dived right in beginning with a Partnership Agreement followed swiftly by two business proposals. Once their product was agreed to, they applied for their preferred business name. They conducted market research and a SWOT analysis whist developing their business plan, logo, packaging, business stationery and marketing strategy. A pro-type was submitted and the final recipe and packaging agreed to. They then carefully considered their costings to arrive at a selling price.
Prior to Market Day students advertised their products and made many presales whilst developing a design for their stall. Students contributed the funds to buy their ingredients and spent the day before Market Day in an epic bake-fest where they made and packaged many batches of their products whilst following OHS procedures.
When the big day arrived they set up their beautiful stalls and dressed to attract the crowds to their stands. They had mystery shoppers (both student and teachers) to assess their stall and customer service. Students ran a brilliant Market Day with most groups selling out of their wares! Once all the expenses were covered, students walked away with between $20 and $50 each from their sales. Not bad at all for a class assignment! We are so proud of them!

English
As we come to the end of what has been one of the most interesting, challenging, yet also rewarding semesters of learning, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone in the Cavroadian learning community. It has been a time of immense learning, not only the learning based on our curriculum, but the learnings about how we operate as a faculty, how we support each other and how during tough times, our resilience can shine through.
Thank you to our students, parents, extended families and my staff for their exceptional work in supporting each other during remote learning and in these uncertain times. While it hasn’t always been perfect, I’m very proud as the acting Head of Department for English, with what we have achieved during this year and how we are set up for a future in which learning remains the cornerstone of what we do.
All our English classes have been taking the last few weeks to make the most of the learning opportunity provided by exams and have been self-evaluating their results and working on redrafting their original work to improve on their skills.
I would like to finish with some verses from a poem…
We’ve watched your child learn
and grow
And change from day to day
We hope that all the things we’ve done
Have helped in some small way
So it’s with happy
memories
We send them out the door
With great hope and expectations
For what next year holds in store.
I wish everyone a safe and happy holiday break and will see you in 2021 ready to engage in another exciting learning adventure.

International News
Well 2020 has certainly been an interesting year for the International Department. COVID has meant that many of the students who were coming could not attend, and as we move closer to Term 1 2021 is doubtful if students who are not already on-shore will be coming also. We will have six (6) new students starting on day 1 of Term 1 2021 – 1 in Year 7, 1 in Year 8, 1 in Year 9, 2 in Year 10 and 1 in Year 11.
COVID has also meant that our current students cannot travel home for the Christmas/Summer holidays. Some students have not been home since July/August last year. It is certainly a long time to be away from home when you are a teenager!
Congratulations to Gia Bach (Nathan) N. in Year 10. He entered into the Science & Engineering Competition. His project titled Pharmacogenomics of Adverse5-fluorouracil Reactions was nominated to represent Queensland at the National BHP Science and Engineering Awards. Nathan is passionate about science and research.
Two of our Year 12 Chinese students – Angela W. and Yoyo H. competed in the Qld University School of Languages and Cultures’ Chinese Writing Contest 2020. They competed in the native speakers in Year 11 & 12 section. Angela won her section.
After seven years working as Homestay Co-ordinator for our International program, Lesley Huxley has decided to retire. Lesley was going to retire at the end of Term 1 however COVID interfered with her travel plans. However, she has decided it is now time to close this chapter of her life and start on the next one. Lesley plans on doing a lot of travelling and relaxing and playing pickleball! I am sure that those people who have worked with us will wish her all the best as she moves into the next phase of her life.
We welcome Melissa Robertson as her replacement. Melissa has a steep learning curve of work shadowing Lesley for two weeks, then she is on her own! (Well almost – I am sure Lesley will answer any calls from Melissa!)

Obento Lunch Day

On Thursday 12 November our Year 7 students enjoyed an Obento Lunch Day, organised by the Year 7 Japanese Co-ordinator Mrs Sloman. It is a big job to make sure over 100 students receive their correct orders and we thank Mrs Sloman for our delicious lunches. As you can see Year 7 enjoyed the obento, supplied by Dami Japanese Restaurant in Mount Gravatt, very much!

Inquiry Based Learning at Cav Rd
This term an exciting opportunity has presented itself for our Year 10 Essential students. Our own Kyan Lambie in collaboration with Associate Professor Katie Makar from the University of Queensland have engaged our students in inquiry based learning with very promising results. In turn, the Department of Education sent a crew out to Cav Rd on Friday 6 November to film our students, teachers and staff involved in the project for EdTV.
EdTV makes internal videos of best teaching practice for the Department for use by teachers all over the state. At Cav Rd we are excited to share our knowledge with our colleagues. As part of our preparation for the Senior Problem Solving and Modelling Tasks (PSMT) we created a suite of support materials to help students beginning in Year 9, navigate the literacy demands of a 2000 word assessment task. This worked well for some students but we found that a number of students struggled to engage with the task. It became clear that a change to our practices was needed. This is where the University of Queensland became involved.
As Katie puts it “I think of guided inquiry as a way to deal with the question: What do you do, when you don’t know what to do?”
Our Year 10 Essential students have taken up the challenge in their current Statistics unit. Focusing on the question “Which sports team will win next year?” students have engaged with guided inquiry using the 5 Ds: Discover, Devise, Develop, Defend, and Diverge. Already, students have produced high quality work as they continue to develop their unique responses. We look forward to seeing the results of their hard work.
We would like to give a big thank you to all staff involved and the student stars of our filming debut: Ethan C., Byron G., Taleisha S., Daniel S., and Jaden S.!

iStem Overview
In term 3, we were involved with iStem as part of the Academic Explorers Program for Year 8 students. We were challenged to identify a problem associated with colonising mars and, in groups, come up with a solution to solve that problem. We then had to justify our solution with statistics and facts, and present our final resolution to external judges.

Pseudoscience

Do MandMs really melt in your mouth not in your hand? Can you really taste the rainbow when eating Skittles? Does sugar-free Gatorade really contain no sugar? Does chewing gum improve brain function? What paper towel brand is the most absorbent? What percent of a choc chip cookie is really choc chip? These are some of the questions our Year 8 AEP students have been investigating in the Pseudoscience AEP program. The students have been mentored by our senior STEM Prefects, Cooper and Jack and designed their own experiments to test these advertising claims. Another research has immerged from this program “why do Year 8s love experimenting with lollies and junk food”?

Science
Year 11 Science in Practice - Cav Road Vegie Garden
What do the Year 11 Science in Practice class, rosemary and men’s health have in common? Well, the Year 11 Science in Practice class have skilfully cultivated the vegetable garden in term 4 and, amongst other things, produced a beautiful crop of rosemary. The class harvested the rosemary so we could make sprigs for the staff to wear for Remembrance Day. Staff made gold coin donations for the sprigs of rosemary to raise money for our charity of the month- Movember. The generosity of the staff and skilful gardening of the Year 11 Science in Practice students resulted in us raising over $80 for mens’ health. Also, we were very fortunate to receive a generous donation from Bunnings Mt Gravatt of garden beds to replace our damaged and rotting beds- Thank you Bunnings. We will install these in week 8 after our assessment.

- Students are participating in a range of activities across our school campus. All activities encourage students to be active (low to moderate intensity). Teams participate in different activities every week. Some of the activities include a rotation between; volleyball, capture the flag, basketball, dodgeball, netball, futsal and ultimate disc.
- Should your child not wish to participate during this opportunity, they will not be permitted to complete classwork during this time. A note from home is expected to explain. Students are to wear their full sports uniforms, which includes an appropriate Cav Road hat or cap.

AFL
On Wednesday afternoon, our Open Boys’ and Girls’ AFL Teams descended upon Alexandra Hills AFL Club to play for “The Cav-Carmel Cup” games against Carmel College. The games were hard fought and intense with many ebbs and flows in momentum as teams traded blows on the field and scoreboard. Fortunately, both our teams prevailed securing “The Cav-Carmel Cup”. The Girls setup the win with a 42-7 win with this being many of the girls first ever games of AFL, which was an amazing effort by the girls. This meant the boys just could not lose by more than 35 points and they did not disappoint winning 39-24 securing the clean sweep. It was a fantastic afternoon thanks to a huge turn out by the Cav Rd community, creating a sea of green down at the ground.
A huge thank you must go out to all the amazing staff, students and parents who came down and assisted as well as cheering on Cav. The afternoon would not have been possible without you being there, it created an awesome atmosphere. A special thank you must go to those students who ran water and did an official role, along with the teachers who assisted in various roles. I know all of the players really appreciated it.
Cav will be involved in AFL again next year so if you are interested make sure you keep a look out for information next year or contact me via email.

Specialist Sessions
We have been incredibly lucky of late to have our girls experience coaching sessions from the best of the best. Earlier in the term we had former Australian Captain Vicki Wilson come out and run a specialist shooting session with all of our shooters. Not suprisingly, we all wish we could’ve had longer with her. Katie Walker then joined our centre court players and passed on her expertise from being the Assistant Coach with the Queensland Firebirds this year. And finally Clare Ferguson, another former Australian Diamonds Captain, as well as the Australian Diamonds Defensive coach, ran a defensive specialist session. All 3 sessions pushed the girls and they excitedly went home with something specific that they could continue working on to implement into their own game.
Last week we finished up our 5 weeks of Umpiring workshops. Umpiring is another pathway into the world of professional sport, but importantly it builds personal skills like communication, resilience and leadership. The improvement we have seen in the girls attending has been fantastic. They gained a lot of knowledge not only about umpiring specifically, but also importantly about the game itself and the rules for them as players. They should each come out of this experience not only better umpires, but also better players who have a greater appreciation for umpires and the rules of the game. Many thanks to Ang, Beth and Noela for their time, patience and support and well done to all the girls who attended each week.

Twilight Netball

Wednesday of Week 5, we sent 4 teams to a new Twilight tournament in Logan. After a jam packed netball season, this new tournament gave us the opportunity to provide more game time to some of our students who missed out on Interschool Netball this year. Winning in Logan would’ve been a bonus, but seeing improvement in each of our girls was definitely our priority. Our Year 10 girls enjoyed their final outing together before they move on from the Academy next year and kept their undefeated year alive, by going through and winning all of their games. Our Year 9 girls also didn’t lose a game, although they experienced a draw to a school who only arrived at half time. Both the Year 7 and 8 teams had 1 or 2 losses and the rest wins on the evening but the type of netball they were playing made us very proud and it was easy to see how far they had come this year. All in all, it was a lovely night out to be representing your school in netball and the girls once again impressed both on and off the court.
Fitness Testing and Physiotherapy Screenings
This week all of our Netball Academy students headed out to Nissan Arena where they were put through a series of Fitness tests and a Physio screening, similar to what the Queensland Firebirds would go through at various times in their season. Even though this was initially booked in Term 1, a change in date due to COVID still worked really well, and the girls had a great day and learnt so much. As they head into their Christmas holiday break they will have a very clear picture of how their body is currently performing, where their strengths lie and what are their weaknesses. The individual results they all receive not only provides a lot of information, but a heap of motivation also. Many students will follow the assigned exercises designed to strengthen key areas throughout their holiday, and our girls will be returning in 2021, stronger than ever.

Netball Academy Dinner

On Tuesday 3 November, the entire Netball Academy came together to celebrate the crazy, yet incredible year that we have had in 2020 at the Netball Academy celebration dinner. The girls all looked beautiful on the night as they reflected back over everything they achieved this year. They received special letters from their parents who were unable to be there on the night with them, they enjoyed some team trivia before the awards began and they listened to current Australian Diamond, Jo Weston who inspired and motivated them with stories of how she got to where she is today. They celebrated the success of groups and individuals, enjoyed some delicious food and they said farewell to our outgoing Year 10 group. The PAC was a fantastic location for a beautiful evening and we can’t thank Mrs McFarlane and her D10 crew enough for their help and professionalism on the night and for streaming this event home to our families. Many thanks to all the staff who attended and who made the night such a success. Congratulations again to the following award winners on the evening:

Indigenous Awards ceremony
The annual Indigenous Awards ceremony was held on 16 November in the school Auditorium. It was a wonderful way to end a successful year for Cav Road’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
This year, we were privileged to have many community elders, parents, staff and guests join us. Mr Brian Coghill was invited to be guest speaker and share his inspirational story and words of wisdom for the Indigenous students regarding the value of education.
It was also an opportunity to acknowledge NAIDOC Week and officially open the Cav Road ‘Reconciliation Room’. Thank you to Year 9 students Keanu Henaway, Mathius Fisher, Kielan Prescott, Alfie Coghill and Leithyn Stoddart for performing a traditional dance celebrating NAIDOC Week’s 2020 theme Always Was, Always Will Be.
Students received awards in the categories of Academic, Attendance, Encouragement, Sport, Leadership and Community. The event was a fantastic opportunity for students to celebrate with their families, staff and community members, to formally recognise their success and achievements of 2020.
A special thank you to the Cav Road Indigenous dance group for performing the traditional Aboriginal welcome dance, and our MC’s for the event – Talitha Saldanha and Lilly Prescott.
Congratulations to all students who received awards!
