Our seniors recently enjoyed their formal, and it was a wonderful night for students, parents and staff to celebrate that ‘rite of passage’. It is heartening and professionally rewarding to see and hear so many parents thank teachers, and even a few my way, expressing gratitude for shepherding their son or daughter through their secondary school years, especially over the last one or two, and running a ‘tight ship’. What particularly caught my attention in those conversations was the recognition of efforts over the last few years for our school culture becoming more inclusive, fair, full of opportunity and care as well as high expectations. Seniors are now in the thick of their final run to their academic goalpost that they have worked towards.
Goals aren’t optimised or even reached without a plan. This year we were determined to ensure that Year 10 students, about to embark on their formal senior phase of learning next year were even better prepared, and guided, with more precision than ever through SETP plans and parent/carer interviews. These can be tricky, for a pathway is not the same, and it is not the intention of channelling a student towards a particular occupation post-school. Often, this is the first “idea” we need to correct. It is great to have aspiration, and we encourage it, however the SETP is intended to guide students into a direction of fields of interest from which certain occupations may be possibilities. Hence the subject selection mix for senior is sensibly chosen, that would prepare them for further education, training or employment to get them there. Subtle difference. Mr Thomson, Deputy Principal for Year 10 ensured that our process delivered this as our priority and the entire senior leadership team and the Year 10 PSC teachers gave many hours to conduct the interviews and planning.
Our intention is to provide young people with flexibility of options, a measure of confidence in their future success and a purpose for their application and effort in their final two years of schooling.
While on the subject of potential and success, credit to Mrs Trapp as Head of Department, Pathways & Performance, who works incredibly hard to case manage each and every Year 11 and Year 12 student. Mr Cox, Deputy Principal for Year 12 has backstopped, and even ‘rescued’ some young people so that they have a future pathway to follow. Mr Batchler as Dean to Year 12 is a force for inspiration, and because of this team, every young person who completes Year 12 this year will certainly have memory and appreciation for the investment in them.
In the distance we have focus on next year. As Principal I am projecting into 2023 and scanning and assessing our “what next” in our dynamic, caring, and high performing school. We are at the point we no longer concern with “scoreboards”. As I may have said on previous occasion it is all about doing the “right” work and results and scoreboards take care of themselves. The next steps are to focus on how do we build our capacity and capability to optimal success for every child, not to be fazed but leverage off disruptive events, particularly in technology, that value adds to student access to learning experiences, and the systems, people and ideas for that to occur.

Year 11 students commence a six-day block exam period on Friday 9 September. These end of Unit 2 block exams follow the format of the external assessments students will sit at the at the end of Unit 4 next year. Student achievement on these exams will be reported in the Semester 2 report cards providing Unit 2 results. They will also be an excellent practice of the type of external assessment the students will sit in Term 4 in 2023. Assessing their own achievement and using teacher feedback are important strategies students can use to develop their own ability to excel. Students can also access their teachers as well as the Senior Schooling Head of Department, Karyn Trapp, and the school Guidance Officers for help and support in seeking academic improvement.
Year 12 students studying General subjects have key assessment items to set them up for the end of Year 12 External Assessments in the finals weeks of Term 3. Students studying Applied subjects also have final assessments in the coming weeks.
Year 12 students completed their Mock External Assessments across six days commencing Monday 5 September. The QCAA has produced mock external exams for schools to use to help prepare students for the exams. Given we are in the third year of External Assessments, the 2020 and 2021 past papers are available on the QCAA Website, https://www.qcaa.qld.edu.au/senior/senior-subjects (select the subject and then the assessment tab). Our teachers use the mock and past papers for classroom learning and/or classroom exam practice as further familiarisation for the Year 12s as well as for these formal mock assessments. The mock assessments are an opportunity for students to practise responding in this formal setting, view their progress and understanding of their knowledge, skills and application and receive feedback from teachers about their strengths and areas to focus on. These mock assessments and then the remaining 4 weeks of classes before the External Assessments will be designed around ensuring the students are the best prepared they can be.
I have previously shared the following advice, but it is timely to share again given the upcoming assessments for all Year 11 and 12 students. With these exams just around the corner, below are some helpful tips to improve memory for exams.
Walking - Research has shown that about 20 minutes exercise before an exam can improve performance.
Speak Out Loud – By reading study notes out loud, rather than just reading them, it is surprising how much more you can remember. This is a very useful technique.
Teach it – One of the best ways to test if you really understand something is to try to teach it to someone else. “Teach” them about the topic. Explaining how something works or how to solve a problem helps you better understand it yourself.
Create Mind Maps – Mind Maps are a great way to connect ideas by creating a visual picture of the different connections, attributes or key information.
Draw Diagrams - Drawing diagrams will help you to visualise information which would be hard to describe. This creates a visual memory which can be recalled in an exam.
Create Flashcards - Quickly test your knowledge of key concepts, definitions, quotes and formulas with flashcards. There are online flashcard makers to help you.
Take Regular Study Breaks - When your brain is working, you need to take regular study breaks to help your brain absorb more information but also to keep you motivated and focused when you are working. Take a short break at least every hour as your focus and concentration will diminish after this period.
Practice! - Practising exam questions, questions on revision sheets and in your texts will train your brain to retrieve information. Then see your teacher for help with anything you could not work out or don’t understand.
Don’t Stay Up All Night Before an Exam - Make sure to have a good night’s rest before any exams. It is vital to break from your study and to let your body rest and recuperate. Having a good night’s sleep will help you remember everything you need for your exams.
Study in a Group - Studying in a group can help you enhance your learning. Discussing, sharing, hearing the views and explanations of others will help you better understand what you are learning.
Best wishes with your remaining assessments.

Student free day activities
While the school was quiet on Friday 2 September without students here, staff onsite were busily involved in a range of activities.
The student free day is scheduled at this time of year to support the QCAA confirmation of Year 12 results prior to external assessments that start in Term 4. Cav Road has a number of teachers employed by the QCAA in a variety of roles: Endorsers who evaluate summative internal assessment tasks, Confirmers who review responses to summative internal assessment tasks and External Assessment Writers and Markers who contribute to the creation and marking of External Assessment. Staff in these roles contribute a valuable perspective to our teaching, learning and assessment processes in the senior QCE system. Friday saw our QCAA Confirmers working to confirm results for IA2 and IA3 in various subjects across the state.
Staff not involved in confirmation, presented and participated in a range of professional learning opportunities. We are fortunate to have a knowledgeable and talented staff who are able to present sessions that align with our school plans. Staff were able to select from a range of sessions including; differentiation through OneNote, iPad in the classroom, modelling and co-construction, video learning and supporting teacher wellbeing. A number of online sessions were also used in supporting teachers learning about supporting students with disability, MYOB use in curriculum and individual curriculum plans.
Wellbeing and student events
Term 3 has been a busy term with a range of wonderful community events for students. The highlight of the term is without a doubt The Great Cavsby formal. It is always a great night to see our wonderful young people decked out in all their finery enjoying a night of celebration together as they approach the end of their high school years. Year 11 PDP Day and Dinner Dance were also a great opportunity for Year 11s to enjoy each other’s company and work together as they move into their final year of high school. Wear it Purple day saw our staff decked out in all their best purple to support safe, empowering and inclusive environments for rainbow young people. The student body got behind a great day of activities to show support for gender diversity in our school community.
Attendance
I want to take this opportunity to thank the Cav Road community for your support and communication around student absences. We thank you for keeping students home when they are sick and communicating with us about your circumstances. If you receive a letter in the mail in relation to unexplained absence, please sign the letter and ask your student to return it as soon as possible. Alternatively, you can contact the school directly with explanation of absences on attendance@cavendishroadshs.eq.edu.au.
A remind to our community that if a student is ill at anytime during the school day, they need to go to Student Services. They should not be communicating with parents/carers via mobile phones. The process is that they get a note to come to student services and our administration staff with contact the relevant parent/carer. This ensures that we can keep students safe in sick bay and record absence from classes accurately.
Please don’t forget to refer to the school website for information about what to do if your student is absent from assessment.

Year 11 Block Exams and 12 Mock External Exams
Over the last week, our Year 12 students sat their external mock exams in preparation for their External Assessment which they will be sitting in Term 4. Students have had the opportunity to complete a sample test paper in their relevant subject areas which ‘mirrored’ their final exam that they will complete in Term 4. These exams will be marked by our teachers and students will receive feedback on their performance. This will provide an opportunity for students and teachers to ‘fine tune’ strategies do assist in developing the required skills our Year 12 students will need to ensure that they achieve to the best of their ability in their final exams for ATAR in Term 4. Year 12 students still have an opportunity to improve their outcomes with the results from their external exams that they will be sitting in Term 4. Final day of Mock exams is Monday 12 September.
Our Year 11 students will commence their exam block on Friday 9 September to finalise the Unit 2 Assessments in their General subjects. Unit 2 in Applied subjects will be completed by the end of Term 4. Moving forward, Year 11 students will commence the summative units for ATAR in Term 4 of this year in their General subjects and will have their first assessment for Unit 3 during Term 4. Students who require changes to any general subject must see me in K16 in the first week back in Term 4.
Congratulations to all Year 11 and 12 students for the effort they put into meeting their commitment to their two weeks of testing.

Optiminds

On Sunday 28 August two very enthusiastic teams of Cav Road students competed in the Brisbane regional Optiminds competition against 104 other teams from Brisbane schools. Optiminds is a creative problem-solving event where students must work together in a team to create a solution to an open-ended challenge.
Both teams worked extremely hard during the first seven weeks of this term, largely in their own time, to put together a ten- minute presentation in response to their chosen Optiminds challenge. Each team also took part in a six-minute spontaneous challenge that tested their on the spot thinking skills. Both teams performed incredibly well and produced an end result that was certainly something to be proud of! Team 2 will now go onto compete in the State championships in October.

Academy of Ideas Escape Room

In weeks 7 and 8, Year 9 Academy of Ideas students went on an excursion to Puzzled Escape Rooms. Each group got to choose from an assortment of interesting experiences, which included a crime scene, scientific labs, a haunted house and a missing professor. This gave students the opportunity to work as a team and use creative solutions while also allowing them to make logical deductions and use their observational skills. Students all agreed that the escape rooms were exhilarating, challenging, and sometimes a little scary. We would like to thank all the people at Puzzled Escape Rooms for the experience and a special thanks to Mr Darvall and Mr Evans for making this possible.

Visual Art

YEAR 10 ART
The Year 10 Art students have been working through a Human Environment Unit where they have been asked to complete a series of works with a focus on the built and natural environment around them. Students have been exposed to various mediums including printmaking, collage and drawing. As part of their folio students were introduced to observational drawing, where the classroom went outdoors and students were asked to draw their built environment. Students produced many different interpretations of this, as many drawings showed consideration of lines and shapes of their structures. Along with these drawings students also produced abstract interpretations of their built environments through collage. Overall these students have shown great flare and consideration of their built environments and I look forward to seeing what they produce as their final works at the end of this term.
Ms Angie Carrara – Visual Art Teacher
YEAR 9 ART

Year 9 Visual Art students have been inspired by Australia artist Jeffrey Smart and his urbanscapes. The class have reinvented A parade in the style of Smart’s work and include a surrealist object into their artwork.

Junior Performances
Week 8 and 9 see our new junior drama students complete Presenting assessment for the first time. The students must present wearing theatre blacks and as you can see, an outstanding effort was made on performance day to meet this expectation. Thank you, students, parents and carers, for ensuring students were ready. They all looked fantastic.
The performances were outstanding with a number of students really embracing the characters and the task to shine on stage. It was a delight to watch our new students demonstrate their skills and talents on stage. It is always a scary task, but both Ms Banks and I are very impressed with their assessment efforts.
Senior Drama Exams
Good luck to our Senior Drama students as they sit their Written Exams. Year 12 students are currently completing Mock Exams in preparation for their final external exams in week 4 of term 4. Our Year 11 students are also completing written test condition assessment to experience the style and depth required to complete ATAR external exams. Good luck to all our students.
Incursion - The Apology by Shock Therapy
Last month all drama students viewed the Matilda Award winning performance The Apology by Professional Live Theatre company Shock Therapy. This fantastic production tours all over Australia and our students were very fortunate to share in this true story. This performance is high energy physical theatre, two performers play 18 different characters without ever leaving the stage or changing costume.

Term 4 Incursion – Shake and Stir
Next term Drama and Media Arts students will view the new live theatre production from Shake and Stir theatre company. This new production titled RIGHT CLIQUE will be performed on 24 October during period 1. Families will receive an electronic permission slip during week 10. Please complete the form on-line and return via email to myself, Toni Ryan. If you require a hard copy, that can also be arranged.

Study Tour

August saw the first of our Study Tours return. Nine students, one teacher and one tour guide from Nisho Gakusha (Kudan) in Tokyo. They spent 10 days with us and enjoyed an Indigenous Cultural excursion where they ate kangaroo and emu meat. They worked with an Indigenous artist from the Lockyer valley to produce 3 art works – one stayed with us, one with Kedron High and the other went back to Japan with them. They have made some life-long friendships with their Cav Rd buddies. They enjoyed doing the mintie wrapper competition along with trying lamingtons, Anzac biscuits, jam drops and tim tams. They also tried vegemite sandwiches and fairy bread washed down with a coke spider!
See the photo below of the artwork.

Modern Language Teachers’ Association Queensland Speech Contest.
We wish good luck to the Japanese students from Years 7 - 10 entered in the Brisbane MLTAQs Japanese Speech Contest to be held at Griffith University on Sunday 12 September. The students will be accompanied by Ms Balfour on the day. They have been working hard to write and rehearse their speeches. The entrants are Year 7 Rose J. Year 7 Obento Lunch
In Term 4 Year 7 student will enjoy the annual obento lunch day. The obento boxes from Dami restaurant in Mount Gravatt are always delicious. Mrs Sloman will be busy finalising orders so students must return their permission notes by Thursday 15 September, Week 10, Term 3. No late orders can be accepted so please make sure your student doesn’t miss out.
Year 10 Visit to Japanese Consulate
In mid- August Year 10 students visited the Japanese Consulate in the city to learn about the broad range of career options available to those with knowledge of a foreign language and culture. Japanese Consulate staff reinforced that fact that language study leads to a big boost in attractiveness to future employers. Employers value the qualities of adaptability and a willingness to explore outside one’s own comfort zone, perseverance and determination to learn a new language, and a globalised outlook accepting of diversity and able to work with people of many different backgrounds. Students were encouraged to continue Japanese language studies at university while pursuing a range of courses in areas such as business and commerce, tourism, engineering and software development, law, education, the arts and the health sciences. The talk was inspiring to the Year 10s, the majority of whom are continuing their studies into Year 11. The excursion was organised by Mrs Karfs. Students also visited a Japanese supermarket and were able to enjoy a Japanese style lunch before returning to school.

Science

We celebrated science week with the theme this year: Glass-more than meets the eye. Our stem leaders were fantastic with organising activities, there was an art competition, science trivia competition and interactive experiments for students to interact with. Our amazing laboratory technicians did an amazing job decorating L-block lobby showing off all our interesting science glassware.

For the last four weeks Year 8 students from the academic explorers program have spent Thursday afternoons, after school conducting experiments to test claims and bust myths. They designed and conducted experiments to test whether sugar free lemonade is really sugar free, whether chewing gum really stays in the stomach for seven years and whether Arnott’s choc chip cookies really contain 40% chocolate. The students also participated in a real educational psychology study and learnt how to use micropipettes and conduct electrophoresis.

Bright Lights Shine on Bright Stars
On 23 August, the Open Girls AFL team was blessed with the opportunity to play their Semi-Final against PBC on the grand stage of Metricon Stadium. We were all excited for a fantastic, once in a lifetime opportunity to head down the coast and show what we as a collective could achieve together as well as celebrate and enjoy the journey we had been on. As a collective group the team started slow, we were fumbling balls we would usually pick up and missed tackles we would usually make. Fortunately, our defence held up well under a bombardment of PBC attack. The longer the game went on the stronger our girls looked as we kicked goals in the last, but unfortunately it was too little too late. No one could fault the effort of our girls they worked really hard all game just as they had all season. 25 weeks is a long time to commit to training once a week, but all of the girls involved were awesome in their performance, attitude and behaviour. They did the entire school community proud and were a pleasure to be involved with this season.
This is not the end just yet for our AFL Season with our Open Boys and Girls, set to reunite our rivalry with Carmel College in the Cav-Carmel Cup on 12 October 2022. These are fantastic afternoons and I would encourage anyone who can, to get out to Alexandra Hills AFL Club for what should be a fierce and fun afternoon to send off our Year 12’s who have participated in the program this year.
