Executive Principal’s Report
As the school year ends and celebrations of student achievement is now behind us we are already well advanced into plans and strategies for 2023. Our school enrolment may just tip near the 2100 students mark.
Our Year 12s leave us this year with exceptional exit results anticipated and the attendance of last year’s Duces Patrick and Sophie a highlight of the senior awards ceremony.
Graduation this year was a stellar final event of the rite of passage of graduands and testimony to the investment made in our young people.
Junior school awards again this year indicates a succession of our seniors by the up and coming cohorts form Years 7 to 10.
I want to emphasise these aspects of such celebrations. The first, is the recognition of some of our students who throughout their secondary schooling consistently high achieving year on year. They will form a new category of recognition in future and any 2022 Year 12 student will have their record of consistently receiving an award every year issued with a Certificate of Academic Excellence.
Our school also provides many avenues of opportunity to broaden their education experience and obtain credit and accreditation as the QCE and ATAR provides giving rise to other qualifications or recognition. We are adapting our awards protocols to better capture those successes to the “6 subjects” equivalent hat I instituted last year. For example, a student may study 5 ATAR subjects at and a University pre-requisite. The university subject is counted as their 6th subject.
While we celebrate exiting students, we also make first welcome to the new intake of Year 7 for 2023. Our school has two primary schools within in our enrolment boundary and several smaller non-government schools in or near. Our total enrolment can be made up of students who have moved into catchment or nearby from inter and intra State or overseas.
Consistent with commitment to holding our school to within its current capacity is our commitment to in-catchment where our school now has a student resident number of 81% and increasing. In the medium term this will have further implications for out of catchment enrolments while our academies and programs of excellence committed to for the opportunities they provide for every young person are not dependent on out of catchment enrolments to offer and run.
This week we welcomed approximately 300 students for their first introduction to high school and anticipate a Year 7 enrolment of about 360 students, similar to this year.
Thanks be to all parents and families who support our school and the leadership and management teams again this year. I must thank our P&C again this year, not only the executive team for sensible representation of the parent voice, ably conducting the businesses of the P&C that raise money re-invested in the school for benefit of our young people. For some P&C members their connection, support and interest runs close to and even exceeds a decade of regular membership, attendance and valued input. Special thanks to Tricia Cox, who finishes up with us at the end of 2022. Tricia has been a longstanding dedicated member of the P&C who will be missed.
Farewells to some outstanding staff, including Kyan Lambie, Rob Stewart, Amanda Pacek, Craig Enders, Rochelle Godfrey, Chloe Evans, Clare Convery, Jai Croucher, Matt McLaren, Lois Darcy, Marie Chappell (leave), Suzanne Schild (leave), Morgan Stebbings (leave), Issa Medraj, Ash Southwell, Irene Morrellini, Jeremy Harris and Georgia Stubbs. I wish them a wonderful and rewarding new venture and adventure in their next schools and I sincerely thank for their contribution to Cav Road during their service here.
To all Cav Road families, I wish a safe and happy holiday season. School for 2023 recommences for Years 7 and 11 on Monday 23 January 2023 and Years 8, 9,10 and 12 on Tuesday 24 January 2023.

Congratulations to all of our Year 12 students who graduated from Cavendish Road State High School recently. 2022 has presented many challenges for this group of students with COVID lockdowns and flooding shutdowns. At every juncture, the Year 12s have demonstrated incredible resilience to continue to focus on the immediate challenge in front of them. These challenges have included the delayed start to the school year as well as sudden school shutdowns. Our Year 12 students are to be congratulated and should feel incredibly proud with the way they have navigated all of these challenges across their years. They are now more than ready to leave the familiarity of school life and be successful in whatever they take on next.
Now that the Year 12 students have finished all of their assessment, the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) and the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) are working to the deadline of 9am on Saturday 16 December when all student results will be available online. Key activities to occur in these next 3 weeks are
- Marking of an external assessment – this commenced very soon after the first day of exams with many exams to still be finalised.
- Calculating of overall assessment results out of 100 – Each student’s overall assessment result is calculated by adding their internal and external assessment results. The total is on a scale from 1 to 100.
- QCAA subject experts to determine A – E cut-offs for each subject which will be included on Senior Statements.
- QTAC then calculates the ATAR scores.
The final subject results for Year 12 students will be available in their myQCE Student Portal from the link below. The ATARs will be available from the link below. In both websites, the students will need to pre-register at both websites.

I wish the Year 12 students every success in their futures.

End of Year
Yet another year has passed us by quickly. It is hard to believe that the school holidays are so close. These last few weeks have been full of celebrations and acknowledgement of achievements by our students. The sporting academy award dinners, our two awards afternoons and the Year 12 graduation have provided opportunities to recognise many fantastic Cavroadians. Congratulations to our graduating Year 12s and all the best for your future.
Many of you are making plans for 2023 already; it may be the last year of school for your student, or the move from junior to senior, or the start of implementing SET plans for the final two years of school. It is important in these last few weeks that students remain focused and on task to ensure they maximise their learning opportunities and outcomes for whatever their next step in the journey is. Lessons continue until the very last day at Cav Rd, so it’s important that students remain on task and engaged. I wish everyone a safe, restful and enjoyable holiday period and look forward to seeing everyone in 2023.

Deans 2023
An integral part of the fabric of Cav Rd is the Wellbeing framework, in particular our structure of having year level Deans. It gives me great pleasure to announce the 2023 Deans to the school community. Congratulations to:
Year 7 – Mr Mitch Baker |
Year 8 – Mr Jordan Young |
Year 9 – Mr Matt Rutter |
Year 10 – Mr Paul Batchler |
Year 11 – Ms Julie Mitchell |
Year 12 – Mrs Sarah Potter |
We are delighted to have many of our Deans following their cohorts through and are excited to have new additions to the team for 2023. This fantastic team will work closely with our Deputy Principals, Guidance Officers and staff across the school to continue to build a safe and supportive environment.
Deans of Year are such a key part of the connection with students and families. Our Deans go all in to support students and make the years at Cav enjoyable. You’ll see below just a few examples of our less camera-shy Deans in action.
This is also the time to acknowledge Mr Mitch Evans who is leaving his Dean roles this year. I know many of you would have had contact over the years with Mr Evans as he followed his Year 7s from 2020 through the last 3 years. His care when working with our students has been so valued and we will miss him in this role. Thanks Mitch!

Year 12 Dean Report
Farewell to the Seniors of 2022

The last 3 months have been an absolute rollercoaster for our Senior Cohort. From the highs of The Great Cavsby Formal, to the arduous challenge of the external exams and now the celebration of one of life’s true rite of passages – Graduation. It has been an extremely successful time for our Seniors and they have shown extraordinary resilience, patience and focus to accomplish their own goals and as a cohort leave a positive legacy.
I hope as Seniors you can look back with pride on the how far you have come, but also, look forward with a strong sense of excitement and anticipation for the next part of life’s journey - adulthood. You now have the amazing opportunity to start chasing your our own dreams and although it is sad to say goodbye to this important chapter in your lives, I hope you will all look back on your time as Cavroadians with immense gratitude for the experiences you have shared. You couldn’t have come this far without the support of your families, your friends and your teachers who have been with you every step of the way and helped you traverse this difficult passage of life.
It has been an absolute honour to be your Dean for the last 3 years and in the years to come I wish you a rich and fulfilling life that is full of learning, love and success. Thank you again for the goose bumps!
Congratulations to the graduating class of 2022.
The CavenDISH 2022
This year our fantastic house captains and leaders worked tirelessly to reinvigorate the house spirit at Cav. They created the CavenDISH competition which saw the four houses battle for house points during 14 lunch time activities throughout the year. Such lunch time activities included musical chairs, mario cart, dodgeball, SPR Snake, capture the flag and limbo just to name a few. Congratulations to Page house for being the CavenDISH champions for 2022. Thank you to our house leaders for leaving an amazing legacy.

Year 12 2022 Graduates
On Friday 18 November, we farewelled our Year 12 seniors for 2022. We enjoyed a very emotional graduation ceremony held here in the Alan Sampson Sports Centre.
Students have been reminded how to access their final results (QCE and ATAR score) via email and are welcome to contact me should they have any questions. Students are able to access their QCE and ATAR score from Friday, 16th December via the myQCE website on the QCAA portal and the QTAC student portal.
I would like to congratulate the class of 2022. I am so proud to have worked with and supported our Year 12 students though what has been a somewhat challenging year for them. Throughout the challenges that they have faced over the course of the year, the students have demonstrated great resilience, have done their very best and have never given up.

Instrumental Music

MUSIC CAMP
At the start of the month we had our annual Music Camp at QCCC Mapleton. Lots of music making, karaoke singing, swimming and community building was done and the students had a great time.
IMEX - JMI Jazz Workshops
Our IMEX students had the opportunity to learn more about Jazz Music from Staff and Students of JMI (Jazz Music Institute).
AWARDS CEREMONIES
Our Concert Band and Symphonic Band performed the opening, National Anthem and entertainment at the Junior and Senior Awards Ceremonies. We also had the premiere performance of our Symphony Orchestra at the Senior Awards Ceremony.
GRADUATION
The Drumline were once again in fine form maintaining the long tradition of performing at this year's Graduation Ceremony. They were able to help lead the students with the "Walk of Fame" and joined with Mr Batchler for a rousing rendition of "Dog Days are Over".

CHRISTMAS CONCERT
Our junior Ensembles, Choir and some of our highly talented vocalists heralded in the Holiday season and entertained the crowd last week at our annual Christmas Concert. With the help of our "CRIMS" group, we were also able to raise $722 for Headspace, a youth mental health charity.

CLASSROOM MUSIC
Our Classroom Music students have been busy completing assessment with some amazing performances.
CRIMS
CRIMS (Cavendish Road Instrumental Music Support) have been working hard all year raising money to support the young musicians of our school. They were able to purchase some much-needed resources and also help with a subsidy for music camp. If you would like to help/join our CRIMS group, please contact... CRIMS.CavRd@gmail.com.

Drama

Goodbye Year 11, Hello Year 12 Drama
Congratulations to our Year 11 students who recently completed their first ATAR assessment IA1. Students just finished performing “Waiting for Godot” by Samuel Beckett an Absurd Theatre playwright. “Waiting for Godot” is one of the most famous plays ever written and is based on existential philosophy.
Congratulation students you did a wonderful job, I could not be prouder.
Most importantly your team effort, comradery and support for one another means we are going to produce outstanding results next year. I am very excited to be celebrating your success and wishing you a wonderful and well-deserved rest.
Ms Toni Ryan – Drama Coordinator

Japanese Report

Japanese Workbooks
Please remind all Year 7-10 Japanese students to collect their Obento workbooks from their classrooms and take them home. This is particularly important for Year 7 students. Your student will most likely have a different teacher and classroom next year so need to be responsible for taking home their own equipment. They need to keep it safe at home for use in Year 8, either in Semester 1 or 2. Staff are not responsible for books left behind.
Year 12 Japanese Celebration Dinner
It was very touching that the Year 12 Japanese class chose the date they finished external exams (Japanese was the final exam for Cav Rd students) for the Japanese celebration dinner. Although they could have been celebrating with family and friends, the entire class enjoyed a delicious meal at Izakaya Kotobuki in the city. As a nod to a question in the external exam, the students started a conversation around the table about “what they were thankful for”. They were grateful for their experiences at Cav, the fun and lasting friendships formed in their Japanese class. Their answers truly showed the calibre of our Cavendish Road students. We wish them every success for the future.
Year 7 Obento Lunch
In Week 6 over 100 Year 7 students took part in the Obento Lunch Day. The obento boxes, from Dami in Mt Gravatt, are always popular with students. There are many requests for them in following years. We thank Mrs Sloman for the huge effort in organising this event. This year we had some disappointed students so we remind students and caregivers to please return Expression of Interest notes promptly by the due date for future events.
Year 10 Activities
Ms Balfour’s Year 10 class also enjoyed obento lunches. They took part in a class competition to see who could make the “ichiban kawaii- most cute” obento at home. Minsuh, Nino and Indigo were our winners but everyone was impressed with the high standard of the entries from the rest of the class.
The Year 10 students also enjoyed a calligraphy lesson in their last week of term. We look forward to seeing many of the Year 10 students continue their Japanese study in Year 11 in 2023.

German Report

End of year reflection
Congratulations and thank you to all students for an excellent year of learning. The Year 12’s did a marvellous job on their external exams and the feedback from students was positive. NO doubt there will be some terrific ATAR results from this cohort. Thank you, Frau Gav, for leading these lovely people through from Year 7 – 12.
Other year levels have also done outstandingly well on their assessment. Especially creditworthy is our Year 7 cohort, where students have been writing beautiful extended German texts after only one year of learning.
End of year activities
In weeks 9 and 10, our junior students will be participating in some creative cultural activities.
Year 7’s and 8’s will be constructing their own mini ‘gingerbread’ houses. Gingerbread house making is a very well recognised Christmas activity in Germany, and an excellent excuse to eat some decadent treats.
The Year 9 students on the other hand will be creating their own mini black forest cakes. We haven’t tried this activity before, so hopefully it will be as good (and delicious) as it sounds in theory…
Thank you
A large thank you is extended to parents of our German students for your support this year. Be it a late start to Term 1 or final cramming for exams, our students have not missed a beat. They have been enthusiastic, diligent and well prepared for learning.
Danke.
Ms Katherine Gallagher – German Teacher
Science

On 26 and 28 October 2022 over 120 Year 11 biology students attended the Toohey Forest Environmental Education Centre to learn about and conduct ecological surveys of the forest. Students learnt how to identify and count all the species of plants in the survey area and how to collect data on abiotic factors such as soil moisture and light intensity. Students will use these skills in their student experiment assessment in Term 1 Year 12. The students were very engaged and hardworking and demonstrated exceptional Cavroadian standards of behaviour. The Toohey Forest Environmental Centre teachers said our students were the best cohort of students they have had all year.

Despite the curtains closing on the on-field season, the academy has been kept busy with the end of season formalities. At the conclusion of the Big Day Out Leadership Day, we held our awards afternoon. With awards ranging from acknowledging the best new talents and celebrating the more experienced players, through to players player and coaches’ awards from across the carnivals, numerous students had the opportunity to take home their own silverware after a fantastic year. A big congratulations to all the award winners, but especially Jayde B and Jasmine G who were crowned 2022’s best players, and Taylor V and Kameryn B for cleaning out the awards in their respective age groups. When combined with the eagerly anticipated lucky draw, this afternoon was enjoyable for everyone and a great way to celebrate the end of the year.
Congratulations to all students who received awards.

Speaking of the end of the year, the close of 2022 brings the Year 10’s time in the academy to an end. Across the four years, everyone has certainly learnt about and bettered themselves, spent quality time with a great bunch of people, made lifelong memories, and most importantly learnt a thing or two about Touch Football. For those who continue to pursue the sport for club, state or even country, we wish them the best of luck and will be supporting them the whole way.
Lastly, best of luck to the Cav teams competing in the finals at State Cup this weekend, as well as all past and present students competing at All Nations, State Cup, and the Broncos Youth Academy over the holidays.
That ends the 2022 season. Thank you to the continuous efforts of parents, siblings, and coaches for always supporting us and being there every step of the way over the touch academy journey, it has definitely been an experience no one will forget soon. As we hand over to Sasha W and Coco S as captains for next year, the academy is in safe hands, and we trust 2023 will be another successful year.
