School Improvement Unit Releases Interim Findings

The attached summary report from the School Improvement Unit (SIU) is a two-page summary which outlines some emerging trends that have been identified from an analysis of Term 1 school reviews. The full eight-page report is available from the SIU's OnePortal page . The SIU completed 64 school reviews in Term 1, approximately five per cent of all Queensland state schools. The reports from these reviews were analysed, with several key themes emerging:

Queensland's strengths

  • Observation and feedback to teachers
  • Schools' use of data

Areas for continuing focus

  • Refining schools' explicit improvement agendas
  • Continuous professional learning and development for staff
  • Clarifying the 'what' and 'how' to teach
  • Differentiated teaching for personalised learning

Although the report is based on a small and non-random sample, it provides Education Queensland with some useful information for further consideration and investigation.

I will be absent next Term for three weeks acting as Regional Director – Metropolitan Region. This position involves the supervision of the 340 schools in Metropolitan Region of which Cavendish Road SHS is one. Meryl Johnston will act as Principal for this time.

Corrine McMillan
Principal

We Are Transitioning To Electronic Report Cards

Commencing this semester, Report Cards will be emailed in PDF format to parents/guardians of all students. This semester, students in Years 9 to 12 will still receive a hardcopy report via the school mail out process. As part of our preparation for this change-over, it is important that we confirm the accuracy of all email addresses. Parents are asked to advise the Office as soon as possible of any recent changes to their email address. The Office phone number is 3394 0777. If there are any concerns receiving report cards, copies may be obtained through contacting school administration. This is an important phase as the school increases its efficiency of school resources and progression to using modern communication technology.

Parent Email Update

Please remember to contact the office to update your contact details and provide your email address as a point of contact.

Careers at Cav Road

We know that an explicitly taught career education program places students in a good place to be informed and therefore make appropriate decisions about their future. This does not mean that young people need to be 'locked' into that choice. The Australian Blueprint for Career Education acts as the basis for our Career Education Programs at Cavendish Road. The blueprint identifies skills, knowledge and attitudes that individuals need so they can effectively manage their careers. More information about the Blueprint can be found here

http://education.gov.au/australian-blueprint-career-development

Year 9, 10, & 11 are participating in Career Education Programs. These lessons give students a great opportunity to discover their interests in the world of work. In doing so, they can make informed decisions about their subject selection for 2016.

Throughout the programs the lessons will be looking at individual preferences, employability skills and the variety of areas of work that may be relevant to them. I have also created a display in the resource Centre that provides lots of information about post yr 12 options. As more information comes in I will include these on the display. Specifically, our year 10s will be completing a SET P - Secondary Education Training Plan. Each student will be expected to complete a Plan and then this will be discussed with a staff member and a parent or guardian. All Year 10 students will receive 2 booklets. One will be The Job Guide. This book will describe and give information about specific jobs. Students will be engaging with this book during their career education program. They will also receive a QTAC book that will outline all prerequisite subjects for TAFE and University programs for 2018. More info on this will come …

We are also having a CAREERS EXPO. Representatives from Universities will be addressing students in Years 11 & 12. Students from these year levels and our Yr 10s will then be able to ask questions to the reps for the universities at the displays set up in the Hall. This will be happening on Thurs 25 June.

What Can Parents Do to Support This Learning?

As adults we offer a wealth of experience and knowledge that can assist young people in making these decisions.

Try the following:-

  • Discuss careers at home – use your own experience to illustrate the pros and cons. Discuss friends and family members' careers.
  • What is it about your career that makes it fulfilling?
  • Discuss the World of Work – inside/outside, team work/individual, autonomous/supervised, physical/seditary
  • Visit http://myfuture.edu.au/assist-your-child/talk-to-them-about-careers
  • Encourage your son or daughter to regularly check their EQ email. I will be sending lots of information via this medium.

Year 12 and QTAC (Queensland Tertiary Admission Centre)

Mr Vanek and I will be conducting interviews with all OP eligible students during term 3. The purpose of these sessions is to ensure that students have considered all options for them and that their preferencing for programs at TAFE or University are realistic. In the event you believe your son/daughter will need more time I strongly encourage them to come and make an appointment. The more information they have, the easier the process is. Guidance Officers are trained by QTAC each year to ensure validity and currency with advice given. All Year 12 students will be issues with a QTAC book. This will give parents and students all the information they need to navigate the QTAC site and select programs they would like to be considered for. The QTAC website offers lots of information. http://www.qtac.edu.au/home

If you require more information or would like to discuss anything in the article please send me an email.

What's happening in Senior Schooling?

Thank you parents and guardians for supporting your student through a very hectic assessment schedule. The way the students have prepared for and approached the exam block is commendable. Remember our goal is to ensure all students receive their QCE and experience success in his/her chosen pathway. If your son/daughter has missed any assessment, this must be finalised before the end of the semester to ensure they are rated for their subjects.

Once report cards are finalised we will be continuing academic reviews for all senior students. In some instances there may be some students who are not tracking well and will be advised to change subjects and if necessary pathways. OP indicator interviews for year 12 students will also commence early Term 3. Year 12 QCS students will have a full QCS practice in Week 10. This will be conducted as per the QCAA guidelines. Papers will be marked and students will be provided with extensive feedback along with their overall rating. Our team of QCS specialists will then be able to 'tailor' their workshops to ensure the strengths and weaknesses of the group are addressed. Students wishing to practise QCS questions from past papers during their own time are advised to see me in B10. There is also a QCS preparation textbook available for purchase.

A reminder that all Year 12 OP eligible students have been advised to ask a teacher to be their mentor. The role of the mentor is to provide:

  • Emotional and scholastic support
  • Guidance (reality check)
  • Encouragement for the student to maintain a work/life balance as they progress through their year 12 studies.

For our non OP students or students wishing to change their pathways, semester two TAFE Brisbane intakes are now on offer. http://tafebrisbane.edu.au/study-with-us/school-students/tafe-at-school/

Students wishing to apply are advised to see me during week 10 or immediately after the holidays. For students interested in School Based Traineeships and Apprenticeships are advised to view the noticeboard outside B10 and speak with Paula. These can be applied for and if successful students can commence these at any time. If you would like further information regarding the above, please do not hesitate to email me lvang14@eq.edu.au

Student Welfare News

This year, I was lucky enough to be chosen as the student to represent the grade 10 cohort at the Lord Mayor Youth Advisory Council (LMYAC for short). LMYAC is designed to give youth a voice and an opinion on issues that are current and affecting us.

The meetings which are held once every term at City Hall give me the unique opportunity to interact with other Year 10's from around Brisbane. These three hour meetings are filled with guest speakers, group discussions and fleeting visits from the Lord Mayor!

LMYAC offer endless opportunities to participate and volunteer in community and council based events that let us connect with people we otherwise might not interact with. Just last Wednesday, I volunteered at Homeless Connect which provides free services such as haircuts, health services, house support and clothing to people without homes or who are at risk. We spent the day running the famous arts and crafts table at which we worked with children and adults alike. The day was a huge success and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is interested in volunteering.

I have definitely enjoyed the meetings and am looking forward to the next ones!

German News

Our senior German students are going from strength to strength with two Year 11 students landing a scholarship this year already. Here is their report:

"My name is Stephanie Riggs and during three days of my January holidays I participated in a program at the Institute of Modern Languages (IML) at UQ. The lecturer teaching us spoke German constantly which kept me on my feet. During the course we got an overview of all grammar cases and tenses which was very helpful because German is quite complex in that matter. This helped clarify a number of things for me. All in all, I would recommend this amazing experience to any future German students. "

"I'm Jack McCredden and back in March, I entered a German competition which resulted in my being one of only five students throughout Australia to win the prize for entering the best written and spoken German assignment. In late June, I will be flying to Frankfurt, and then taking the bus to stay near the Zugspitze (Germany's highest mountain at 2962m) for two weeks. This includes taking German classes and going on excursions around the area with over 100 international students also selected for this trip. The remaining two weeks I will be thrown into the linguistic deep end, and attending a German Gymnasium (secondary school) with the son of my host family. Thanks to the German I've learned here at Cav Road, I'll never be lost in translation and I'll be sure to get the most out of this fantastic opportunity."

On May 22nd our Year 9-12 German students attended the annual German Film Festival. We saw Ruby Red, which was originally a German novel written by German author Kerstin Gier. It was a fantastic experience as usual. Sadly our time with our Year 8s draws to an end but we hope to see many of them in Year 9 again. Next semester we will be welcoming Year 7s for the first time and are confident, they will do well.

Academy of Ideas - Toowong Dig

On the 21st May we conducted the best excursion I have ever attended and it comes down to a couple of things. Firstly, our brilliant kids who not only amazed us with their work in preparation for the dig but wowed the professional archaeologists with their knowledge, diligence and behaviour. Besides giving us some bad puns (dead centre of Brisbane, dying to get in, Anzac corps), they were such great ambassadors and showed why they deserved to be in our Academy. One volunteer there also said that based on the way our students interacted she would be sending her daughter to Cav Road – what a great outcome!

I`d really like to acknowledge the commitment, hard work, brilliance and in-depth researching by Miss Clare Spruce who is not only a great teacher but organised and spent 5 hours and 10kms giving a guided tour investigating the mysterious death of Elizabeth Dale. The archaeology team from UQ wanted her back again on Saturday! We are privileged to have a wonderful partnership with UQ and the school of Historical and Philosophical thought. These opportunities are offered to so few and I'm happy to say it has been locked in as a partnership for years to come.

This archaeology club has been a pleasure and the findings on the day were outstanding. The students unearthed the find of the last few years by uncovering a 160yr old headstone of Mary Kingsbury. Three young ladies discovered the tombstone of the first sheriff of Queensland, which will be now on display at the Police museum with their names acknowledged. The students also found never before uncovered metal burial markers, that had the professionals whooping with delight.

All in all, it was one of the best days I had in teaching because of all the vision, ideas, activities and hard work paid off in the most remarkable way. Next year we plan to return to Toowong with our 2016 year 7s but will be looking at a new dig for our current Academy students to continue their association with even more archaeology.

National Collection of Data on School Students with Disability

Collecting data on school students with disability helps teachers, principals and education authorities support the participation of students with disability in schooling on the same basis as students without disability. All Australian Governments have agreed to work together on the annual collection of data on school students with disability. In 2013, 10% of Queensland state schools participated in the first year of implementation. In 2014, two thirds of Queensland schools, including our school became involved in the nationally consistent collection of data, and from 2015 all schools in Australia will participate in this data collection annually.

Please be reassured that the Department will not provide on to another organisation any data that can identify an individual student. The only data being collected at the school level to be reported nationally is the:

  • number of students in the school who are provided with an adjustment to address a disability
  • level of adjustments we provide for those students
  • the broad category of disability

Consultation with parents is important not only for the data collection but also to ensure you are aware of the adjustments being provided to support your child. We will therefore continue to consult with you. While only data that cannot identify your child will be submitted outside of the Department, if you do not wish for your child's details to be included, please let me know.

Information and fact sheets are available to help you make a decision from the:

Acting Head of Special Education Services

Numeracy at Cav

In the last month we have continued to promote numeracy throughout the school and to improve the consistency of our approach.

Visiting numeracy expert Marg Buckle has continued conducting professional development afternoons to a wide range of departments. These presentations to the Social Science, Home Economics, and HPE departments have shown the staff a variety of techniques that can be applied to their learning areas. The sessions will give the staff more confidence in presenting numeracy to their students.

The Home Economics department have been incorporating numeracy into their Year 9 home economics course. The students have been analysing how healthy their diets are and the changes they can make to improve their food choices. In order to do this the students had to employ a variety of numeracy techniques such as comparing bar and pie graphs, calculating ratios of food types, and estimating servings of food.

Staff at Cavendish Road have been meeting with teachers at Seville Road, Holland Park, and Coorparoo State Schools to discuss our approaches to numeracy. These schools are our main feeder schools and our meetings are helping us to ensure a consistent approach that will help the students' transition from primary to secondary schooling. The meetings have also been a good opportunity to exchange ideas that will help improve the teaching of numeracy across the region.

Rugby League / Touch Academy to specialise in Touch Football only in 2016

In 2015 Cavendish Road State High School has seen the introduction and approval of four academic academies in Maths, Science, Philosophy and Jazz music. The introduction of these academies has been the catalyst to revise the scope of the academies on offer in 2016.

We have considered the resources we have as well as current school and systemic priorities and have made the decision to cease the Rugby League aspect of the Academy in 2016. Moving forward we will continue the touch football academy at the school and target time and resources to enhance this already very successful part of the Academy.

This is an opportunity to take touch to the next level at the school by strengthening partnerships within the touch community including links with other touch academy schools. It is important at this point to also reflect and celebrate the achievements of the Rugby League Academy. While we have produced players that have gone on to represent the region, state and even national teams it is also the social outcomes that we are proud of. Students have been proud to pull on the green jersey, show pride in their school and above all themselves. With this we have seen many of our students moving into leadership roles as prefects and school captains.

This is not the end of Rugby League at Cavendish Road State High School. We will continue to provide opportunities for students to play in interschool teams as well as representative teams. Students in the academy currently, will retain their place in the program, however we understand for the Rugby League specialists in the program there will be some consideration of whether to pursue a Touch Football focus or return to mainstream Physical Education classes. These decisions will be made in consultation with the student's families as well as their current academy teachers.

Thank you for your support through this transition period. Should you have any queries please don't hesitate to contact the school and speak to either our Principal Mrs Corrine McMillan, Head of Department, Anthony Caruso or our Academy Director, Phil Gyemore.

Some words on vocabulary from the school's Speech–Language Pathologist

Parents are always keen to know what they can do to support their children's language and learning abilities. Throughout the year I will include some information in the school newsletter that relates specifically to aspects of language that are vital for developing literacy and for learning in the secondary classroom. Today's article focuses on vocabulary.

There is significant research to show that well developed vocabulary skills are essential for the development of age appropriate reading skills and for successfully performing many classroom tasks. Parents are very aware of their young children's language development. The excitement and joy associated with hearing a young child's first words are enormous, and it's a lovely journey to follow as single words turn into word combinations, and word combinations turn into sentences.

What you may not realise though, is that language development, including vocabulary acquisition, continues throughout adolescence and adulthood. Students with typically developing language learn approximately seven to ten new words a day and many of these are complex, subject specific words. Students develop a greater awareness of subtle differences in word meanings and are much more able to understand complex words that have double or even triple meanings. (I CAN Talk Series – Issue 10, Speech, Language and Communication in Secondary Aged Pupils, 2011).

One of the best ways parents can support ongoing vocabulary development, is to instil and promote an interest in spoken and written words in the home. The following are some suggestions for ways to do this:

  • Talk about words and language. The English language is full of interesting, unusual and sometimes crazy words. Talk about these words as you hear them in conversations, on T.V, on the radio or in movies.
  • When you encounter a word that you don't know, model to your children what to do to find out what the word means, and talk out loud as you do it. Look at the word. Does it have a prefix or suffix? If yes, what can you work out from this? Do you know the root of the word? Does that help you? If not, use an online dictionary to look up the meaning, but make sure you use a dictionary that provides definitions that are actually helpful. The Collins CO-BUILD English for Learners dictionary is a great resource for student friendly word descriptions ( http://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english-cobuild-learners )
  • Ask your children about new words they have learnt in their subjects at school. Get them to tell you what the new words mean. This gives them practice at saying these new words out loud, and helps consolidate learning of the word.
  • Reading promotes vocabulary and language learning. Be a reading family and model reading as an activity. Read novels (paper or e-books), newspapers, online news articles and magazines.
  • Play board games such as Scrabble, Boggle and Pictionary as they involve thinking about and understanding words and language.

The more you can talk about and reflect upon words and language, the more it will benefit your child's vocabulary development.

Work Inspirations - Special Education Department

During the first week of June, I accompanied five students to four days of looking, listening and learning about work and study options available to school leavers. This was organised by a small team of EQ staff and the Disability Services Coordinating Officer. Students from Brisbane Bayside College and Sunnybank State High School completed our group.

On the first day, we went on a tour around TAFE Queensland Skills Tech, which is located at Acacia Ridge. The size of the campus was amazing. Many of the classrooms had trucks, cars and huge machinery in them and were ten times the size of our regular classrooms.

We also had visits to Future Auto Sumner Park, Work Wear World at Heathwood, Griffith University Maintenance Centre and HELP Enterprises at Eagle Farm. Work Wear World consisted of all female employees both managing the office and working on the warehouse floor. We had a shirt folding competition there. It appears we would need a lot of practice to be hired there.

HELP Enterprises was another huge complex. There are many people both with and without disabilities working there. HELP provides training on site and employment services for those people requiring open employment. We met some of the workers and learnt how many different jobs they do there. It would be a great workplace for some of us but it is on the northside.

At Griffith University, we met some of the maintenance team. They employ an electrician, plumber, carpenter and grounds person. The grounds person is the only employee without a trade because there are no apprenticeships in this area. He does have a number of Certificates and licenses to drive various pieces of machinery.

On our final day we all went to Sunnybank State High School to make a PowerPoint about what we had been doing. We then presented our PowerPoints in teams and had a final celebration with some of our parents and staff from our schools.

Drama News

This month Drama students have been busy with curriculum assessment and viewing live theatre to prepare for assessment. Students across Junior and Senior Drama are currently completing performance assessment; Year 7 'A Hero's Journey' group devised work, Year 8 Bullying performance pieces, Year 9 Collage Drama, Year 10 Children's theatre performances and our Senior Students are in Exam Block. We are very proud of the work they are producing.

Thirty students from Year 11 & 12 attended La Boite Theatre to view 'Medea', a new adaptation by Suzie Miller. La Boite Theatre is Brisbane's only Theatre in the Round and serves a unique performance style for all students to view. This was an outstanding production enjoyed by Year 12 students who have studied Medea and providing outstanding insights to Year 11 and Year 10 students who will study Medea in Term 3 of their Year 11 studies.

'Medea'.

Children's Theatre Unit

Year 10 students are currently completing their Children's Theatre Unit. This is a unique and challenging opportunity for students to really focus on how to engage children and in experimenting with utilising resources including shadow screens to create shadow puppetry, Bun raku puppetry, song, dance, imagery and other storytelling techniques to bring famous children's picture books from the page to the stage. They enhanced their work with stylised lighting and sound to really bring to life the book's mood and atmosphere. Students' work will be performed in front of Primary school students from Year 1 to Year 4 during 'Book Week' in mid-August. This will enable Primary students to view two performances and attend theatrical workshops run by the Year 10 students. What an opportunity to engage our youth in exciting curriculum work created and performed by Year 10 students. The following images are from class assessment being completed this week. The work looks absolutely incredible, brilliant work team!

Upcoming Performances

Students will be attending several performances next term. First, Year 12 students will be attending an assessment performance titled SLAMMED at the Powerhouse. This is a new play, written by a Drama teacher encompassing student issues such as; Mental Health, One Punch can Kill & Cyber Bullying. It is an outstanding play and we look forward to attending the premiere performance.

Chop Logic by Shake and Stir is coming to CAV RD! This is a vibrant, full of energy mix and match of Shakespeare pieces all delivered to ensure students grasp the language and message within each Shakespearian play. Year 10, 11 and 12 students are then off to see DRACULA at the Cremorne theatre QPAC. This will be an outstanding Gothic theatre production that Year 10 students will then study as part of their exciting Semester 2 curriculum.

Philosothon

Philosothon 2015

Just a few short weeks ago Cav Rd gathered teams of our best philosophical thinkers to participate in a senior Philosothon. What exactly is a Philosothon, you ask? A philosothon is a competition that gathers students into small groups called "communities of inquiry". Through these 'communities' students are asked to discuss questions centred on major ethical and philosophical topics; a common example would be identity, or more specifically the concept that our identity is as much a virtual construct as a physical one. Topics are introduced and key guiding questions are posed to help facilitate the discussion that is to follow. Students are challenged to further their communication skills through open ended discussion which enables them to demonstrate their high-order, reflective thinking skills, as well as their inquiry-based learning as they search for truth, meaning and understanding. While the notion of a competition is present, students notice a sense of community developing while they work together to better their critical and creative thinking.

Our students travelled to the University of Queensland to partake in the 2015 Queensland Philosothon, a state wide competition which draws interest from schools across Brisbane and surrounding areas. Our best and brightest demonstrated true Cav Rd spirit as they contributed to their communities of inquiry, all the time honouring Cav Rd's tradition of cooperation, courtesy, commitment, consideration and challenge. Stealing fifth place for 'Most Notable Thinkers' is a happy result for us philosophers.

Junior Philosothon

In the junior division, Cav Rd welcomed primary students from across the city for the second time at the annual Junior Philosothon. We hosted the talented young minds of the future as they dove down the rabbit hole of critical thinking; discussing topics such as identity, lying, and existence. It was a truly inspiring experience listening to these young minds rationalise some of the pinnacle core questions in philosophy. To finish off the day school teams battled it out in a logic competition where student ability to solve an array of logic puzzles was put to the test. All in all a truly wonderful day with an overwhelming amount of positive feedback from faculty and students. We look forward to hosting next year's Junior Philosothon and welcome all interested in getting involved.

The 10 Year Reunion of the Class of 2005

Traditional clock makers often engraved their creations with a Latin phrase – tempus fugit – meaning time flies. And it appears to be the case for the Class of 2005….. On one hand where has the last 10 years gone and on the other ….. That's easy …….. careers, marriage, parenting, travelling and study!

So just to jog your memories as to what else was happening in '05, here's a few prompts - the Airbus A380 and X box 360 debuted, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Star Wars Episode III, Revenge of the Sith were popular movies. We listened to the Pussycat Dolls, James Blunt and the Black Eyed Peas on the radio and the recently arrived iPod.

The re-union began with small group re-visiting the school, and for nearly all it was their first step inside the school gates since leaving. The tour was hosted by current teacher Mr Ashley Dickson who recounts the following as the most significant changes as noticed by the group – very few computer rooms, the luxurious grass on the top oval, the demolition of O block, the old Art Department building, the new canteen, the courtyard in front of the hall, especially the ANZAC area, portable change rooms for students not wearing the correct uniform and the impressive Year 7 building.

Event organiser Susann Morrow now a high school teacher in Clermont, then hosted a dinner at Bulimba's 152 Oxford where she was joined by 40 more students as well as teachers Ms Stacey Hollis and Dr Brenden Sue See.

So here's a little more detail for some graduates of the Class of 2005 ……… Some have pursued their career dreams that they had in high school. Carley James (now Carley Francis) is a doctor at Logan Hospital and is working towards specialising in Obstetrics. Ashley Cooper has been using her degree in Science/Journalism working at the Brain Institute. She is now heading over to Berlin to complete her PhD working on a project investigating congenital heart disease. Anne-Marie Dangerfield is studying a Masters of International Business at Griffith Uni in the hope to return to work in Japan – a country she visited on school exchange trips. Tim Sharp is the creator of Laser Beak Man. He has produced amazing artwork based around this character. He has been a TEDx presenter and look out for Laser Beak Man on the stage. There will be a production in New York which may come to Australia. These are just a few of their success stories.

Most have found their niche – working in jobs that they love such as childcare, medical receptionist, cabinet maker, electrician and even teaching. Some have been travelling the world, discovering the different cultures that the world has to offer. Some have married their high school sweetheart. There were many fond memories of school. Some of the soccer boys who may have been described as loveable rascals at school recalled their…..many …conversations with the principal at the time, Mr Sampson. There was a lot of reminiscing about the fun times that were had in class and on camps with their teachers. Most had not seen each other since high school with the exception of some tight knit groups who have retained strong friendships.

Overall, the students of 2005 have developed into happy, healthy and mature young women and men. It made us proud to see this and realise that we may have had some small part in their journey in life.

Shine Girl Program

The SHINE Girl program is up and running with a group of eleven Year 9 girls. Some of the activities and demonstrations in this program have already impacted the group in a positive way and the discussions have been very meaningful.

Social/Emotional and Spiritual Support

Group discussions are held in the life group run by students which is always inspirational and I am very proud of these young leaders and always happy to contribute.

Mentoring

The Creative Expressions group fizzled due to lack of interest, so I cancelled it. Then, four people showed up, so it is back on again.

Other activities in the life of the school

  • Junior Recreational Sport (Table Tennis)
  • Classroom interaction
  • Deadly Choices
  • Staffroom visits

In-service

The topic was about how Chaplains can engage in the issue of sexual diversity in schools, keeping within the school context. This issue is surrounded by controversy, yet Chaplains have a special opportunity to care for the disadvantaged groups no matter who they are. Next year the 'Safe Schools Coalition Australia Program' is coming to QLD schools, therefore this is a relevant topic to learn about.

Thank you for your ongoing support of School Chaplaincy. Together we are making a difference in the lives of a younger generation.

Sister School Visit- Host Families Needed

Host families are still needed to accommodate students from our Japanese sister school, Omiya Koryo Senior High School. As Cavendish Road SHS students also have the chance to be hosted by families of Omiya Koryo students during reciprocal CRSHS study tours to Japan there is no payment to home stay families involved in this visit.

We are still looking for 6 home-stay families for 9 nights from Saturday July 25 to Monday August 3 2015 for female students. Your child does not need to be studying Japanese to host as the Omiya students speak a good level of English. All families of Cavendish Road SHS students are most welcome to host. Families will need to provide the Japanese students with three meals a day, a bed (the student may share a room with a student of the same sex) and access to transport to school. An information night will be held prior to the arrival of the Omiya Koryo students in order to provide host families with further details regarding the visit.

Thank you to those families who have already volunteered to host the Omiya students in 2015. We truly appreciate your generosity in supporting this valuable program.

We are also looking for one family to host a female Omiya Koryo student for two months from mid-August until mid-October 2015. This student is participating in the reciprocal long term exchange program. Students who host in this program increase their chances of being selected for a long term exchange with Omiya Koryo in the future. However, once again it is not necessary to be studying Japanese to host this student.

If your family wishes to provide a homestay to an Omiya Koryo student, please ask your child to collect an expression on Interest form from Ms Balfour in V02 or email the Japanese Coordinator Joy Balfour on jbalf7@eq.edu.au to have the form emailed to you. You may also phone 3394 0713 for further information.
