From the Principal

I congratulate our Principal, Corrine McMillan on her appointment as Acting Regional Director, Metropolitan Region for 5 weeks leading into term 3. I relish the opportunity to again lead this great school as Acting Principal in Corrine's absence.

KOKODA CHALLENGE

Congratulations to all teachers, students and parents who participated in our 18 Cav Road Kokoda teams last weekend. This was a great team effort and a memorable event for all staff and students. A special thank you must go to Meredith Lane-Richardson and Steve Griffiths who worked tirelessly to again ensure the success of Cavendish Road SHS. Thanks also to our support group of parents for their commitment during the training process and on the actual weekend of the challenge.

YEAR 11 CAMP

Many of our Year 11 students attended the Outdoor Education Centre at Maroon Dam last week as part of the student leadership program. Reports from the staff at Maroon regarding the behaviour and participation of our students were glowing. The camp begins the leadership process which will culminate this year with the announcement of our leaders and prefects at Awards Night on 21 October. Students who didn't attend camp spent the week working on the Microsoft IT Academy which enabled them to gain credits towards their QCE.

CREATIVE GENERATION

Thanks to our Instrumental Music teachers, Meg Robson and Tony Lashmar for co-ordinating our 16 students who performed exceptionally well in Creative Generation last weekend.

STUDENT REPORTS

Last semester, the emailing of reports was trialled for the first time. Reports were emailed to all families with printed reports mailed home to parents of students in years 9 to 12. There are many benefits of emailing reports including reduced cost, reduced time taken to assemble the packages and parents receiving immediate feedback regarding the progress of their students. It is vital to ensure the school has an accurate record of your active email address.

JAPANESE SISTER SCHOOL VISIT

Our sister school Omiya Koryo will visit next week. Thank you to the many families who have volunteered to be home-stay families during the visit.

QUADRENNIAL SCHOOL REVIEW

The school leadership team is currently working on a review of four identified areas of school practice. The Australian School's Accreditation Agency has been engaged to assist in this process. Surveys are currently being created to gather feedback from students, staff and parents.

The focus areas are:

  1. Investigate the extent to which female students are supported in their learning to ensure academic success and increased female student enrolments in the future.
  2. Determine the extent to which academic and pedagogical excellence is evident across the school, including the success of the seven Education Queensland approved Academy Programs of Excellence.
  3. Review the structure of the non-teaching workforce across the school to ensure improved service to the school and community and improved physical presentation of the school.
  4. Analyse the extent to which the current five values reflect the future goals of the school.

ATTENDANCE

A focus on attendance will continue in semester two as we attempt to ensure students attend every day in order to maximise learning. An incentive/reward process is being implemented to encourage students to improve their attendance rates. The school's attendance rate target for 2015 is 95%. Currently, we are tracking at 93%.

PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS

Parent Teacher interviews were held on Tuesday 21 July. Thank you to those parents who made the effort to connect with our teachers in the interests of the education of our students. The partnership between teachers, students and parents is vital if we are to ensure students have every opportunity to achieve their very best. Your feedback is always welcomed on ways to enhance conversations between parents and teachers.

Kokoda Challenge 2015

The Kokoda Challenge was held on the weekend of 18-19 July in the Gold Coast Hinterland. This year, Cavendish Road had 71 students and 18 leaders take part in the event. Of our school's 89 participants, 86 completed the challenge they had set themselves, whilst 3 people pushed themselves to their limit until injury or illness forced them to retire from the race.

The school's participation would not be possible without the dedication of our leaders, teachers and parents. As always, for any successful event, there is a huge effort that takes place behind the scenes, from the efforts of the school's administrative staff through to the team support crews who keep everything going while the teams are out on the track. We appreciate these contributions and thank you all for your commitment to our students. We very much appreciate the ongoing support of the school P&C to help with the funding of the shirts.

The Kokoda Challenge is recognised as the toughest endurance course in the country because of the Gold Coast's demanding terrain and steep and never-ending mountains. It is hard to describe the demands that this challenge places upon individuals and teams, but it is certainly a challenge that changes lives for ever.

Year 11 Camp – Maroon Outdoor Education Centre

Term 3 got off to a great start with the year 11 leadership camp at Maroon Dam. Congratulations to all students and staff involved for your brave efforts in the challenging conditions and freezing temperatures!

The various challenges included hiking, camping out and preparing meals, high ropes, low ropes, canoeing, the leap of faith, rock climbing and loads of team building activities. It was so positive to see students not only push themselves out of their comfort zone and succeed, but encourage each other as well. All six groups had a fantastic time and the Maroon staff could not have been more complimentary with regards to how our students behaved. You should all be very proud of what you achieved in the week.

Guidance Officer News

On Thursday 25 June our Year 10 – 12 students participated in a Careers Expo here at Cav Road. While students can easily access general information about courses and programs on offer it is extremely helpful when they can discuss their specific needs to personnel from institutions. Career Expos at schools enables this to happen. UQ, Griffith, ACU, QUT, QBIT, Australian Defence Force, Axiom, USQ, & TAFE were all represented and very willing to discuss programs with our students.

The Careers Expo was timely given that our Year 10s & 11s were participating in a Career Education Program at the same time. For many of our Year 12 students this experience provided the information they need now in order to complete their QTAC form.

It is that time of the year again! The time when all year 12 students seriously consider where they want to be next year! It is QTAC time. The Queensland Tertiary Admission Centre is an independent authority that administers all applications to universities, TAFE and some private institutions in QLD and northern NSW.

A Year 12 students received their QTAC book last Friday. This book provides all the information needed to make application. In summary students need to:-

  • Register an account on the QTAC website. This is new this year and can be done any time now.
  • Keep checking their EQ emails for University updates, scholarship information on everything post Year 12. As I receive information I am forwarding this onto the students
  • Attend another QTAC session this Friday
  • Complete the QTAC Interview form they will receive on Friday.
  • Have an appointment with either Mr Vanek or myself to discuss preferences and their specific case.
  • Consider their preferences. 1 & 2 being Idealistic, what they really want. 3 & 4 realistic, a sure idea of what they can get into. 5 & 6 their foot is in door. It is a sure thing they will be accepted.
  • Pay and complete their application by 30 September.

Parents can assist by:-

  • Asking questions about their selections
  • Providing information based on their current industry understanding.
  • Sit with their son/daughter while they review preferences.
  • For some, it might be, say nothing at all.
  • Either way offer your information, experience and knowledge – it maybe the piece of advice they just helps them get in.

Please contact Ms Niland or Mr Vanek if you have any queries about QTAC.

Senior Schooling and VET News

Academic Reviews

This term is another very busy one for Senior Schooling and VET at Cav Road. Academic Reviews are underway with Year 12 students working with Mrs Tonges and Mrs Van Genderen to get an indication of what their OP might be as well as ensure their subject choices are appropriate. Remember that this is just an indication based on previous years' results but it does give your child an idea of what they are likely to achieve. Year 11 Academic Reviews are also underway to ensure students results are providing your child with the best outcomes both at school and beyond.

TAFE 2016

TAFE Queensland and other RTO's have begun to advertise their courses for 2016. If you have a child in Year 10 or 11 who would like to gain certificate qualifications whilst at school, please see Mrs Tonges in B10 for courses available and enrolment information. These places do fill fast so you do need to start planning for next year.

Work Experience

Sixty Year 12 students went out to complete work experience during the first week back of this term. Work experience is a compulsory requirement for those students studying a Certificate II in Workplace Practices. This certificate is for those students who are not going for an OP. It provides them with a practical certificate for their resume as well as 4 valuable QCE points. Please speak with your child to ensure they have completed the compulsory 80 hours of work experience as well as being on track for the completion of this certificate. Another round of work experience will be offered to year 12 students during week 2 of term 4. Registrations for this round must be completed by Monday 3rd August.

Australian Youth Aerospace Forum

On the 29th June to 3rd of July the University of Queensland (UQ) held a forum known as the Australian Youth Aerospace Forum (AYAF) which I and 54 other delegates from across Australia attended. This forum was hosted for Year 11 and 12 students, to give them an opportunity to investigate careers and pathways in the aerospace industry. Throughout the five days, the forum showcased various activities such as designing gliders and rockets out of given materials. My team (Jacaranda) won the glider contest. We also visited universities (UQ and QUT) and aeronautical industries such as Qantas, TAE aviation, Aviation Australia, and Sikorsky Heli-tech.

This forum has truly been an awesome experience, not only because of the friends that I have made and awesome industry tours and activities, but because of the range of leaders that were with us. These leaders ranged from undergraduate students at various universities such as UQ, Queensland University of Technology (QUT), University of New South Wales, Monash University (Melbourne), and the Qantas Industry, giving us the experiences of university life and showing us job opportunities in the industry by providing mentors to explore careers in our areas of interest. I would strongly recommend AYAF to other students interested in aviation, aerospace or the aeronautical industries or if they seeking to find something that they might study in the future.

Year 12 Community Gift

It has become tradition for the Year 12 students to present a gift to the community at their leaving ceremony. This year the senior leaders are currently working on developing an idea that requires your assistance. We need shoe-boxes and a lot of them! So, if you or your family members have empty shoe-boxes hidden away in the deepest, darkest corners of your wardrobes or cupboards, please seek them out and then ask your child, grandchild, niece or nephew to bring them to school and deliver them to the uniform correction room which is now located in K15 from Monday 27 July until the end of August. Someone will be there to gladly take them off your hands.

In regards to raising funds for the community gift, our Acting Principal, Ms. Johnston, has kindly given permission for all students in all cohorts to wear their sports uniform on Friday 31 July 2015 instead of formal uniform. Any student who does so will be asked to make a gold coin donation. This money will be collected in peer support. Where possible, please get behind this great cause and help our senior students help others less fortunate.

Sarah Potter.
Year 12 Coordinator.

Humanities Department

The Academy of Ideas

The Academy of Ideas has started off again this term with the students engaged with solving problems 40 years into the future. Miss Chappell is challenging the students to think of sustainable solutions to issues such as overcrowding, clean air, power generation and living edible walls!! Stay tuned for more information on what these students will get up to over the next 2 months – it will be ground breaking and incredibly exciting.

In regards to next year, Academy students in year 7 will automatically be invited to continue in year 8 – unless their teachers feel they need to only focus on their classwork before engaging in higher order activities. In terms of the year 8s an Academy of Ideas subject will be offered to invited students in second semester year 9. This will be designed around the curriculum of Future Problem Solvers Australia and will require students to be collaborative and creative in responding to possible future scenarios.

Subject choices

Over the next term students will be selecting subjects for next year and I would encourage them to consider the many varied and valuable offerings in the Humanities. Completing at least one Humanities subject is often encouraged by Universities as well as many elite schools due to the rigorous thinking and researching that they require – key skills that are needed for success at University. I will be presenting the options to all year 8-10 students, however if you have any questions I am happy to respond. Please feel free to contact me at skosa1@eq.edu.au . I have attached a link to an article that further explains the importance of studying the Humanities.

2015 Early School Leavers Survey

The Queensland Government is conducting its annual statewide survey of students who left school in Years 10, 11 and prior to completing Year 12 during 2014. The Early School Leavers survey is a short, confidential survey that collects information about what young people are doing the year after leaving school. The information from the survey helps our schools to understand the pathways young people follow after leaving school and to plan services to support transitions into study or employment for our students.

Between July and August, our students who left school in Years 10, 11 and prior to completing Year 12 last year can expect to receive an invitation to complete a web-based survey or a telephone call from the Queensland Government Statistician's Office to complete the survey. Please encourage early school leavers to take part. For more information, visit www.education.qld.gov.au/nextstep/ or telephone toll free on 1800 068 587.

School Opinion Survey

This year's School Opinion Survey will be conducted between 29 June and 31 July 2015. The School Opinion Survey is undertaken each year by the Department of Education and Training, State Schools Division to obtain opinion information from parents/caregivers, students and school staff. The survey will help our school to find out what we are doing well, and how we can improve.

All families will have the opportunity to complete the Parent/Caregiver Survey this year, and survey access details have been sent home to every family in the school. The survey is anonymous, and the results are not reported in ways that an individual's response can be identified by the school.

Thank you if you have already completed the survey. If you haven't yet completed the survey, I strongly encourage you to do so as the school values your feedback.

IXL Superstars Work Wonders

Since the end of Term 1, a small but dedicated group of Year 7 and 9 students has been working on Tuesday afternoons and Friday mornings at improving their numeracy skills using the online IXL programme. Each student has received a personalised programme aimed at addressing their individual numeracy needs, and has been working hard to address misconceptions and becoming more numerate.

Maybe it's the one-on-one teaching time with Mrs Gaffney (Support Teacher Numeracy), maybe it's the hard work and enthusiasm of these awesome students or maybe it's the magic blueberry muffins and popcorn fuelling their brain cells, but the results have been terrific!

So far, among 15 students, we have answered over 12500 maths questions (yes, you read that correctly!) and mastered over 220 new numeracy skills. This will set these students up for future success not only in Mathematics and other school subjects, but in life in general.

We have recently welcomed a group of 12 Year 8 students to the programme, and the signs are promising that they will prove just as hard working and successful. I so thoroughly enjoy working with you all, and am tremendously proud of your highly deserved achievements. Congratulations!

SOUTH DISTRICT – INTERSCHOOL TRACK & FIELDS CARNIVALS

Over 60 students have been selected in the Cavendish Road School team to compete in the South District Track and Field Carnival in August. This event will be held over two days, with Field events on Monday 3 August and Javelin and Track events on Thursday 6 August. These championships will be held at QEII Stadium (Nathan), over the two days and parents are welcome to come along and support the team at the carnivals. If your child has been selected please return the permission form that was distributed last week and return to T Block HPE Staffroom by Friday 31 July.

SPORTING ACHIEVEMENTS

Luca Rostagno has been selected in the Queensland Schoolboys Baseball team. Well done Luca! Declan Brown and Tanasio Winikerai have both been selected in the Queensland 12 & under Schoolboys Rugby League team. Manon Jones has recently returned from representing Queensland at the School Sport Australia Waterpolo Championships held in Sydney. Manon represented herself exceptionally, with her team finishing with an honourable second place at these championships and earning a silver medal.

WINTER INTERSCHOOL SPORT TRIMESTER

There is only a few weeks left in the Winter Interschool sport season. Many of our Netball, Soccer and Volleyball teams are still undefeated. Best of luck to all teams for the remainder of the season! District & Metro Finals will occur from August 4 until September 9. Well done to all our Cavroadians that love their sport and continue to enrich their lives through sporting participation, success and pure determination. GO CAV!

Attendance

One day a fortnight away from school may not seem a lot, but this amounts to more than one whole semester during a student's high school life. It's like finishing year 12 at the end of term 1 year 12. Research indicates that absences from school greatly affect a student's long-term chances of success.

The attendance goal for all students at Cavendish Road State High School is a minimum of 95%. This includes being on time for school every day. It is expected that all students are at school by 8.40am so that they are ready to go into their classroom at 8.45am when the school day begins.

We can only improve attendance with the support of our parents. It is vital that we work together to achieve this. Please make appointments for students, e.g. doctor, dentist, outside school hours where possible. The school is offering a range of individual and peer support group incentives for students to improve their attendance. Further details will be published in future newsletters.

Obviously, if a student is ill he or she should be at home in bed trying to recover as soon as possible.

QParents – Available for all parents at Cav Rd

The QParents web and mobile application provides a convenient, easy way for parents and legal guardians of Queensland state school students to interact with their child's school. Parents will have secure, online access to their child's student information, anytime, anywhere, through a smartphone, tablet or computer.

After a successful trial with parents of Year 9 students, QParents access has been extended to all parents at Cavendish Road SHS. A parent or guardian for every student should now have received an invitation code sent via email.

QParents allows parents to connect instantly with their child's school to access and manage their child's student information, including:

  • Behaviour details
  • Academic report cards
  • Class timetables
  • Viewing unpaid invoice details, payment history, and making payments online
  • Viewing and updating personal student details, including medical conditions and address
  • Enrolment details

QParents will assist both staff and parents in sharing and responding to information in an efficient and effective way. It won't replace the traditional ways you communicate with our school, but it will provide another way to communicate with us.

The benefits of QParents

Convenience and time savings for parents

  • Parents can view or update their child's details without having to contact the school
  • Secure 24/7 online access.
  • Available anytime, anywhere — access QParents on your smart phone, tablet or computer.

Greater transparency of information

  • Improves accountability between parents and schools by providing parents with timely access to their child's information online.
  • Allows parents to engage more deeply in their child's schooling

As the information available on QParents is private and specific to individual students, access to QParents is restricted. Parents/guardians must be invited to use the application and supply multiple forms of identification before access is granted. When registering as a QParents Account Owner, you will need to verify 100 points of identity documents online. The 100 points can be made up of documents in the following list:

Australian Passport

50 pts

Australian Marriage Certificate

40 pts

Australian Driver Licence

50 pts

Australian Citizenship Certificate

40 pts

Australian Birth Certificate

50 pts

Change of Name Certificate

40 pts

Medicare Card

20 pts

Australian Visa (foreign passports)

20 pts

If you only have 60-90 points of the above ID documents you can still register for QParents, but you will need to attend the school for an additional check after you have registered online. If you don't have sufficient documents, you might like to nominate another parent as the QPAO.

For more information on the online identity verification process, see https://qparents.qld.edu.au/#/help If you haven't received the invitation code, please email the school admin@cavroadshs.eq.edu.au to request a QParents invitation code to be re-sent to you.

Biology Excursion

On Thursday 16 July, 50 Year 12 biology students attended a one day human anatomy and physiology workshop at the Medical Engineering Research Facility (MERF) operated by QUT at Prince Charles Hospital. Students observed an anatomical tour of a human cadaver and performed a series of physiology experiments on each other. The main goal of this excursion was to reinforce knowledge and stimulate ideas for the upcoming experimental investigation tasks. Students had a very enjoyable day and learnt a great deal. As always, the students were fine ambassadors for the school.

A Double Shot of Happiness

There are times in our teaching careers when we meet students who forever change the way we teach and think. Tim Sharp was one of those students. Tim graduated from Cav Road in 2005. He was a very polite boy who liked to draw and by the time Tim started year 8 Art he already created his own super hero; Laser Beak Man. "A super hero who told Santa straight up that undies were not NOT a Christmas gift".

Tim and Laser Beak Man have taken on the world. His artwork is held in a number of major collections across Australia and overseas. ABC 3 commissioned a Laser Beak Man cartoon series. An off Broadway play is being developed and Tim's tale has been told by the ABC program Australian Story. Richard Filder has interviewed Tim and his Mum Judy on the ABC radio program Conversations and last year Tim, Judy and Laser Beak Man presented a TEDx talk at the Sydney Opera House which was a roaring success.

The newly launched biograph, 'A Double Shot of Happiness' (Judy Sharp), looks back on Tim's development as a person and as an artist, and when you read the book you realise what an amazing journey it has been as Tim is autistic. This book tells of the highs and lows of one family's struggle to recognise the person not the condition. On the 8th July Mrs Brunckhorst and Mrs Hollis represented Cav Road at the Brisbane launch at Avid Reader. It was humbling to see how far Tim, Judy and brother, Sam, have come. 'A Double Shot of Happiness' is available in the school library.

We are looking forward to sharing photos and a report about the visit in the next newsletter. Omiya Koryo will be hosting a 'Thank You Party' for the families involved in the visit on Friday July 31. On behalf of Cavendish Road SHS, I also thank the families who have generously volunteered to support this long standing relationship between the two schools.

Long Term Homestay Urgently Needed for Female Japanese Student

Due to unforeseen circumstances we urgently need a long term homestay family or families for Minami Kawaguchi from Omiya Koryo Senior High School from August 3 until October 16, 2015 (including the school holiday period). It is possible to split this time between two or more interested families but it is preferable she stays in each home at last three weeks. It is particularly important that Minami be placed with a family over the school holiday period. If your family may be able to host Minami, even for a short period time, please don't hesitate to contact Ms Balfour by email for more information. The email is jbalf7@eq.edu.au for further information.
