Year Coordinators Appointed for 2016

Congratulations to the following staff who have been appointed as Year Co-ordinators for 2016:

Year 7 – Lisa Williams
Year 8 – Ian Mitcham
Year 9 – Rena Rusit
Year 10 – Dale Zimmerlie
Year 11 – Amanda Pacek
Year 12 – Nicole Coutts

I know these teachers will do a fantastic job in leading a strong culture of learning at our school in 2016. One of their first tasks in preparation for 2016 will be to design an implementation plan for the new Uniform Policy and develop Year Level precincts for 2016. As you know all Year 7 students are expected to have a compulsory school bag and formal hat next year.

CavQuest

Special congratulations to all staff, parents and students involved in the 2015 CavQuest. It was a great celebration of our students' talents. Well done to our many Year 7 students who joined the contest for the first time.

The Art and Science of Teaching (ASOT)

Our teachers and students continue to focus on the Art and Science of Teaching, Teaching and Learning Framework to ensure the conditions for teaching and learning at Cav. Road are the best that they can be.

The following is one of the many foci for our teaching:

Cognitive skills refer to one's ability to analyse situations in light of what one knows and how one feels and select appropriate actions. Three types of strategies that are useful in understanding and controlling oneself are: (1) becoming aware of the power of interpretations, (2) cultivating useful ways of thinking and (3) avoiding negative ways of thinking.

Our Continued School Priorities

A reminder for us all of our school priorities for the remainder of 2015 and into 2016:

  • Improve the attendance rate of all students
  • Ensure every Year 12 student achieves a Queensland Certificate of Education
  • Maintain our commitment to and focus on academic and pedagogical excellence for every teacher and every student. Our leaders will be resuming class visits this Term. All teachers are following the ASOT Beginning and End of Lesson Routines and Learning Goals are identified for students at the start of every lesson.

In addition to the above, my work this Term will focus on:

  1. Writing and publishing the next four year plan (Quadrennial School Review) based on the feedback from the ASAA Review
  2. Developing and implementing a new Administrative structure for 2016
  3. Developing and implementing a revised non-teaching staff structure for 2016
  4. Writing the financial budget for 2016
  5. Developing the Annual Implementation Plan for 2016, based on the next four year plan and
  6. Staffing our school ready for 2016.

Congratulations to all our Annual Award Night recipients who received their awards this week at Hillsong Church on Wednesday evening.

Order of Australia Secondary Schools' Citizenship Award

It is with great pride that we announce that our School Vice-Captain Emily Barlow was recently awarded with an Order of Australia Secondary Schools' Citizenship Award. Emily was one of only twelve recipients of this prestigious award which attracted 79 nominations from 49 Queensland schools.

The Order of Australia Association Secondary Schools Citizenship Awards was inaugurated in 1999 by the Queensland Branch of the Association. The Awards are designed to foster pride in Australian citizenship and are presented to those secondary school students in Queensland who have demonstrated outstanding service to their schools and to their communities.

This recognition is extremely well-deserved. We congratulate and thank Emily for the significant contribution that she has made to our school and to the community.

School Vice-Captain awarded with an Order of
Australia Secondary Schools' Citizenship Award.

QUT Vice-Chancellor's STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Camp

Attending this year's QUT Vice-Chancellor STEM Camp was a great honour for me and an exciting opportunity to meet other students who are passionate about Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Throughout the camp, other students and I were placed in programs where we worked together on minimising and solving problems that our society and planet faces today. I was very fortunate to work with QUT academics and student ambassadors in the pharmacology and pharmacy unit where we formed ibuprofen tablets, melatonin capsules and sorbolene cream.

From this experience I learnt that one should always wear breathing masks to prevent inhaling melatonin as it is a sleeping agent which may have caused an increase in our fatigue level that day! My favourite part of the camp was attending a street science performance and afterwards discussing the expansion and physics of the universe. I'm grateful to have been able to meet and form friendships with so many like-minded students and would highly recommend QUT STEM camp to students in year 11 next year.

Opti-MINDS

Opti-MINDS is an annual state-wide competition with challenges in the fields of Language and Literature, Science and Engineering and Social Sciences. The challenges require knowledge, creativity and ingenuity from the teams in order to complete the tasks successfully whilst also teaching and encouraging sustainable living practices.

Once again this year, our school upheld its great Opti-MINDS tradition of excellence. Three of our teams were runners up in the Regional finals, despite being comprised largely of inexperienced Year 7 and 8 students competing against much older rivals. The enthusiasm and commitment of all of our teams was admirable.

In a great result, our Senior Science and Engineering team won the regional final and then did themselves proud at the Opti-MINDS State final – finishing runner-up ONCE AGAIN (for the third year running). This is a great performance, considering they competed against the top teams from eleven different regions across Queensland. We finished behind Pimlico SHS, who are historically the strongest Opti school in Queensland. We were confident that we had done enough this year to pip them, but the judges disagreed!

Congratulations go to Anabelle, Santiago, Haris, Jess, Pantea, Mohamed and Sebastian. Many thanks also to Ms Kurylewska for the great job that she did in organising the junior teams this year. Also thanks to Michelle Janik-Sands for helping out with our team at the State finals.

Year 12 Biology Guest Lecture – Dr James St John, Griffith University

What do Jasper the dachshund and Polish man Darek Fidyka have in common? Both have spinal cord injuries that have resulted in paraplegia and both have undergone stem cell therapy to try to regenerate their spinal tissue. In each case, stem cells were harvested from their nasal region and transplanted into their spine, which has resulted in some movement in their legs. This type of therapy has potential to treat patients with spinal cord injuries but it comes with a range of biological and ethical issues that need to be considered.

The Year 12 Biology students are studying Bioethics this term and we were fortunate enough to have Dr James St John from Griffith University speak about this topic which is his area of research. He provided an interactive, thought provoking talk about ethics and the therapeutic use of stem cells. Dr St John then discussed the upcoming stem cell clinical trial that his research group is undertaking in 2018. Thanks to Dr St John for giving up his time to visit our students at Cav Rd. Nuclear Physics Excursion

Centre for Advanced Imaging (CAI) is a world-leading facility at University of Queensland, specialising in the development of medical imaging technology, and production of radiopharmaceuticals (medical diagnostic or treatment tools using radioactive isotopes). Our Year 11 physics students were invited to tour the facility and learn first-hand about the instrumentation and research from the scientists themselves.

Students visited the cyclotron (a particle accelerator for making radioisotopes), used the robotic arms the scientists use to handle radioactive materials, and saw several other pieces of world-class imaging machinery. Dr Andrew Janke (our resident 'Scientist in School') works at CAI and kindly coordinated the tour for us and delivered a lecture on the use of PET-scanners, a commonly used diagnostic tool in cancer studies, and the subject of the students' assignment.

Aside from the impressive nature of the facilities and research happening at CAI, it was also enlightening to note that 'real' scientific research is multidisciplinary- the team at CAI includes physicists, chemists and computer scientists, just to name a few. Students with an interest in science can study many varied disciplines to be involved in such exciting careers!

YEAR 10 ACADEMY SCIENCE SPARQed EXCURSION

As part of the Year 10 Science Academy program, the class participated in two days of practical work at SPARQed (Students Performing Advanced Research Qld,) located at the P.A. Hospital. Over the course of the two days, students observed the effects that different chemotherapy drugs have on the process of cell division in cancer cells. They also became genetic engineers by creating a small circular DNA plasmid that was moved into bacterial cells. These bacteria then multiplied to produce enough of that DNA so the students could then extract, isolate and examine it via a process called gel electrophoresis.

The excursion provided the students with an insight into scientific research. It also provided them with an opportunity to develop practical laboratory skills and extend their knowledge of molecular biology, one of our next areas of study. The group enjoyed the experience and all students represented our school in an exemplary manner.

OPEN WORKS PRODUCTION
Tuesday 3rd November 6.30pm
School Hall

We are so proud to announce the final performance for the Year 12 Drama students is very fast approaching. Students are working extremely hard in order to produce a performance outcome that will showcase their amazing talents and knowledge from their last five years of Drama studies. The showcase will feature their very own scriptwriting pieces, performed through a variety of performance styles, methods and techniques.

Students will be required to attend rehearsals over two weekends; Saturday 24th October and Sunday 1st November from 9:00am-3:00pm in the school hall. We assure parents that students will need every moment of this time and it is vital all attend. If you have any concerns with these dates please contact the Drama Department. We look forward to seeing friends, family and past students on the evening.

Year 11 Drama students spent time this week with ZEN ZEN ZO, a Professional Physical Theatre Company working with our students to explore, apply and delve into Greek Drama in a very physical way. These workshops are so valuable for assessment preparations and we look forward to seeing some outstanding work produced by the students.

Year 8 Drama students have been reading BURNT by Stephen Davis in class and exploring the theme of Bullying. We do a great deal of work on issues relevant to young people to ensure they can understand how significant and isolating being a victim of bullying can be within our school grounds. We look at being proactive and preventative in a range of drama role plays.

Congratulations to our 2016 Arts Prefects! We are so proud of these young women and know they will do an amazing job in leading the Arts next year.

Year 12 Accounting QUT Lecture

In the final week of term three, our Year 12 Accounting students had the special privilege of having Kate Hogarth from the QUT School of Accountancy come out to visit them. She gave a highly informative session about how to network which was enthusiastically received. Kate spoke to the students about why networking was an important part of building their future career and strategies to make the most of their opportunities through their university studies.

She also spoke to them candidly about the commitment that university studies entailed as well as the need to have balance and a variety of interests. Kate also identified scholarship opportunities that QUT offers its students. Many of the students have already begun to think about their future career and how to set themselves up for the best start possible once their studies are completed. The information they received has given them a starting point to springboard into a bright future.

ECOMAN

On Monday 14 to Wednesday 16 September, a group of Year 11 students from Accounting and BCT took part in the Ecoman Program at the National Australia Bank Mt Gravatt. Ecoman is a program run by Queensland Private Enterprise Centre (QPEC). The program is designed to simulate the operations of a medium sized manufacturing company over a four year period.

During the three days the students experienced the ups and downs of running a medium sized Coffee Machine manufacturing company including record profits and a global downturn. They concluded the three days with a presentation to 'shareholders' on how their company performed.

The meeting was attended by Mrs Tonges, parents of the students as well as employees of the Mt Gravatt NAB branch. In the end, we saw Team La Prosperite come out on top under the CEO leadership of Prosper Musukuma.

Overall, it was a great learning experience whilst still being fun at the same time. Ecoman is a valuable learning experience for the students as it provides students with real life experience in running a business and puts classroom theory into practice.

Year 10 Market Day

Roll up, roll up! Bring your spare change to Market Day on 27 October. Market stalls will be set up on A Parade at second break. Students will have the opportunity to purchase mouth-watering homemade goodies made by our Year 10 Business Management students. We can't wait to see all the hard work our students have been putting into their business venture this term.

German News

What a busy month at school we've had! At the end of Term 3, our Year 7s got to enjoy a typical German meal which consisted of: Brezel (pretzel), Wurst (sausage), Sauerkraut, Kartoffelsalat (potato salad), Brötchen (bread roll) and a choice of either Apfelsaft (apple juice) or Orangensaft (orange juice). It was good to see the more adventurous try Sauerkraut for the first time! The same week we also hosted our second German Day of Excellence with the Year 5 and Year 6 students of Coorparoo. Our Year 7s showed great leadership and initiative in hosting the younger German scholars and we enjoyed learning about Germany and Fußball.

On Thursday in Week 2 Term 4, the majority of our current Year 9-12 German students participated in the annual Oktoberfest for Teens. We had a wonderful day being immersed into the rich Bavarian culture. We heard the traditional bell-ringing and yodelling. We watched slap-dancing and hat dances and were then able to join in and give it a go ourselves. The rides were a hit as always, as were the Gummibärchen races and Lemonade sculling… yes lemonade, not beer. It's been a few full weeks and we look forward to what the end of the year brings: Christmas celebrations!

Japanese News

On October 14 we farewelled Minami Kawaguchi who was on a three month exchange from our sister school Omiya Koryo Senior High School. Minami thoroughly enjoyed her time at Cavendish Road SHS and plans to visit Australia again in the future. On behalf of the school I would like to sincerely thank the Bulmer, Shibasaki and Kennedy families who generously volunteered to share their homes with Minami. As part of the reciprocal exchange between the two schools, Isaac Power of Year 11 will spend eight weeks studying at Omiya Koryo SHS from December this year.

Year 9 and 10 Japanese students will attend the Japanese Film Festival on October 23. Students will view the film 'Wood Job', chosen by the Japan Foundation for school screenings across Australia. It shows the adventure of a young, city raised Japanese man who accepts a rural traineeship and in turn discovers a world of Japanese traditional lifestyle, customs and beliefs that he never expected to be a part of. This film should give students a deeper insight into Japanese culture and encourage them to further pursue their language studies.

Lastly, the Rugby World Cup 2015 has been full of excitement. It was heart-warming to watch Japan's imagination be captured by the success of their team under Australian coach Eddie Jones, who speaks Japanese. The coaches and players of many teams have provided language students with great role models of true citizens of the global world. The Wallabies coach Michael Cheika has been widely praised in the media for his ability to hold press conferences in French and Italian as well as English. These are the skills we need our students to take into their future to succeed on the international stage.

All Schools Touch Football 2015 Update

Cavendish Road State High school was the only school in QLD to have both a Boys and Girls Team in the State Finals on Sunday. Our school has a proud history of competing in the Southern Hemisphere's largest Schools Touch Football Competition, the 'All Schools'. This competition is a fantastic opportunity for students to use the skills they learn in class and at training throughout the year. In 2015, Cavendish Road SHS entered teams into 6 divisions. With yet another long 'All Schools' campaign over, here are the results and the statistics. It was another fantastic year for the Cav Road Cobras!

Round matches:

  • Across the 4 days of Touch Football Cav Road has won 28 of 32 matches at a winning percentage of 87.5%.
  • Unfortunately both the U13 girls and U13 boys' teams missed out on finals football by a matter of points differential.
  • 4 from 6 Cav Road Cobras teams made the Final 16.

Final matches:

  • Open Boys lost to Kirwan SHS 5-4 in extra time
  • U15 girls lost in the quarterfinals to PBC in extra time
  • Both U15 Boys and Open girls reached the Grand Finals.
  • U15 Boys lost 9-8 to Keebra Park for the 3rd consecutive year.
  • Open Girls lost 6-5 to Chancellor.

In what is such a difficult competition to get to the final, let alone win, we were one of only two high schools to have two teams in grand finals. Also, we were the only high school to have a team of girls and boys in the final which demonstrates the balance of success between Girls and Boys within our school. Congratulations to all teams for their courage, commitment and cooperation throughout the 'All Schools' experience. It was a pleasure to watch, coach and learn with you.

A huge thanks goes to Anthony Caruso and Strak Kosanovic for giving up their time in the lead up to the competition and throughout the carnival in order to see our students succeed. Thank you to the parents, supporters and staff that came out to support our students pursue their goals and to ride their highs and lows throughout this type of carnival. A special thank you also goes to Ashley Dickson for his support throughout the carnival by documenting our successes using his camera. Phil and I appreciate all the work the students, staff and parents have put in to make this another successful Touch Football year.

Chappy's News

Happy Chappy Riders

The 500 km bike ride from Roma to Brisbane was a success! Four days of tag team riding proved to be a challenge with one of us riding whilst the other driving behind as the support vehicle. We not only raised almost $2000.00 for the Cav Rd chaplaincy service, we also raised awareness of chaplaincy as we spoke with people along the way. This was a team effort. Thank you to Shelley Harvie for riding with me. Thank you to David Wrigley for the loan of your vehicle. Thank you to the chaplaincy committee, the local churches, particularly Greenslopes Baptist and Birkdale Baptist Churches, and thank you Cav Rd students and staff for your great support and encouragement.

Students who participated in the sports uniform gold coin donation day to fundraise for the 'happy chappy ride' went in a draw to win 2 VIP tickets to any Gold Coast theme park, or a $50.00 Myers voucher. The winners are: Bethany Coyle—tickets; and Sam Morton—$50. Thank you P & C and Joe Kelly MP for these gifts.

At present I am in the process of interviewing students for a new group. It should be up and running by week three.

NYMC - (National Youth Ministry Convention)

This convention was a time of equipping, of being challenged and also encouraged. The days were very long, as I attended electives and keynote speakers from 9 am in the morning till 10:30 pm each night, making the most of this opportunity. Term four is sure to be amazing and I feel privileged to be serving at Cav Rd S.H.S.

Ms Hickey!

Art department teacher Ms Sarah Hickey recently opened her second Brisbane exhibition at New Farm's Graydon Gallery. Her series of female idols are inspired by images of women from a variety of contexts, histories and worlds. The complex layering of imagery and patterns depict beauty, spiritual iconography and the feminine.

After completing bachelor degrees in fine arts and education, and then five years of teaching art in Queensland high schools, Ms Hickey started to produce art professionally after a long hiatus from her own creative practice. At the recent opening night, Ms Hickey was joined by several current members of the school's staff and their partners who all enjoyed her company and her beautiful pieces of original art.

World Teachers' Day 2015

This year we will celebrate World Teachers' Day on Friday 30 October, which falls during State Education Week (26 – 30 October 2015).

World Teachers' Day provides us with an opportunity to acknowledge the professionalism and dedication of our teachers, and their role in preparing their students for our increasingly complex, multicultural and technological world.

It is also a day on which students, parents and community members can demonstrate their appreciation for teachers in their local community. We would like to thank all Queensland teachers and recognise the significant contribution teachers make in our classrooms and communities.
