THE PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Dear Parents and Carers,

Awards Evening

Congratulations to the large team of staff and students responsible for Awards Evening. This is a huge job, involving the bringing together of many people. Well done to all involved. I include an excerpt from my speech presented at Awards Evening below.

I feel privileged and honoured to lead this outstanding school. Cavendish Road State High continues to be a leader of education in Queensland, a leader of academic and pedagogical excellence.

Parents, tonight you should be feeling very proud as your sons and daughters sit before us.

Energy, belief and optimism abound in our School community. You will sense the tangible pride and affection our students and staff have for their school – you will witness first-hand the exuberance and exhilaration that occurs when Commitment, Courtesy, Challenge, Cooperation and Consideration come together. No school is a busier or more exciting place to be than Cav Road.

Our priorities are clear – our priorities are resolute. Above all else we aspire to develop young people who are principled and compassionate, striving to maintain a firm grasp on every aspect of their humanity as they face an unknown, but exciting future.

Our students are maturing into fine young citizens of tomorrow: they are thoughtful, humble, critical, receptive, resilient, courageous and at times still. They are eager to learn. I know I speak on behalf of all staff when I say it has been an absolute pleasure to be working with such wonderful young people in 2016. As we reflect on the past year, I know our teachers, parents and students are proud of all that we have achieved together.

This year we welcomed 306 Year 7 students and their families into our school for the very first time, I believe these students and new staff have further defined and affirmed our school culture.”

During 2016, many students are deserving of our recognition:

  • Our Year 12 Exit Outcomes will be some of the best in the State.
  • Our Year 7 and 9 students’ remarkable NAPLAN results. We will acknowledge these high achieving students later tonight.

In The ARTS our achievements included –

  • Our Symphonic Band, Jazz Ensemble and String Ensemble, all won gold at the Fanfare Competition.
  • Katelyn and Isaac have secured a place in the Young Con's Symphonic Band and Isaac in the Queensland Youth Orchestra.
  • The very first ‘Arts on the Green’ event was a wonderful celebration of both ‘The Arts and Food at Cav Rd.’
  • Cav’s contribution to Creative Generation – State Schools on Stage Gala Performance.

In Science:

  • The outstanding improvement in Year 9 results supported by our flipped classrooms and problem based learning pedagogical approaches.
  • The resounding success of the Academic Excellence Program incorporating Science, Humanities and Mathematics in Years 7 and 8.
  • The introduction of the first STEM Prefects in Queensland, and Year 11 University of Queensland Science Ambassadors.

In English:

  • The successful implementation of the trial External Examination in English. Our staff have worked tirelessly to ensure that they and their students are ready for full implementation in 2019.
  • Nearly 50% of all Year 7 students achieved in the Upper Two Bands in Reading, Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation and Numeracy.
  • Our Year 9 students’ achievements in Reading, Grammar and Punctuation and Numeracy.

We continue to be the leaders of Philosophy in Queensland as the first secondary school to implement Philosophy in Year 7, working with our feeder schools - Holland Park State School, Buranda State School, Seville Road State School and The University of Queensland;

  • We have provided training to over 150 teachers across 12 different Queensland schools.
  • The establishment of the Academic Excellence Program has enhanced opportunities for our gifted students and aligned our Academic Academies.
  • The creation of the Academy of Ideas subject in Year 9 will further engage our students and nurture academic excellence.

In Humanities:

  • This year students conducted an archaeological dig at Toowong cemetery and in conjunction with Science, visited UQ to participate in a forensics subject.
  • Academic Excellence Program students in Year 8 were involved in the first ever iSTEM unit that enables students to work collaboratively in groups to create solutions to a current problem and contest a one thousand dollar prize.
  • The creation of project based learning units in Year 7 reduces the number of assessment items for students and has resulted in improved student results in both History and English.

In Mathematics:

  • Twelve students completed a first year University Mathematics course; seven of these students achieved a Distinction or High Distinction.
  • We were State finalists in the Year 7/8 Queensland Mathematics Quiz.
  • Winners in the Senior Division of the Regional Mathematics Teams Challenge.

In Languages other than English:

  • The upcoming study tour to Japan will afford students the opportunity to practise their language skills, deepen their understanding of Japanese culture and is reflective of the long term relationship with our sister school.

Our Special Education Department ensures that we are truly inclusive of all students, increasing student participation in mainstream classes with appropriate support. Acceptance of difference, diversity and inclusivity is after all, the platform of public education and a symbol of a great state education system and a progressive society.

All Year 12 students engaged in a post Year 12 interview with our Guidance Officers to ensure every student has a pathway for 2017. Our new, Year 7 to 12 Career Education Programs are now available online via Ed Studio, accessible by all students. 122 students have successfully completed a work placement. 27 students secured School Based Traineeships or Apprenticeships. 363 VET qualifications will be issued to students including 76 Certificate III Qualifications and every Year 12 students will achieve a Queensland Certificate of Education. These results are outstanding and reflect the range of opportunities available to our students and challenge the traditional modes of education we once knew.

And in our midst are District, Regional and State sporting representatives and members of teams that have been victorious.

In 2016, Cav Road continued to demonstrate our strong sporting culture and the success of our Academy Programs in Netball, Touch and Football.

The highlights of 2016 are many, but to list a few:

  • We have the most elite touch football academy in the State with the under 15 Boys’ team winning the National Championship and the Queensland All Schools Competition.
  • 58 students represented Metropolitan East Region and 12 students represented Queensland.
  • 7 Interschool sports teams were Metropolitan Champions.
  • A new partnership with Griffith University in Health and Exercise Science has enabled 11 students to study a University subject through Senior Physical Education and Senior Health. This guarantees student entry to a range of Health courses at Griffith University.
  • Our Football girls competed in the National Finals of the prestigious Bill Turner Cup.

The achievements of these students are indicative of our focus on academic and sporting excellence.

Cavendish Road State High donates 20,660 cans to Foodbank

To the generous staff and students of Cav Rd, we did it! The final count for our Canned Food Drive was over 20 600 CANS! We are officially the biggest donors donators in Australia! Thanks to everyone who assisted by donating, supporting their students to donate and reminding their students about the importance of this charity! I was overwhelmed by stories of teachers who matched their class totals can for can, like by the famous Johnston A who for the fourth time have gained a spot in the 1000’s clubs and all those classes that set a goal, worked together and achieved it as a team.

I had the opportunity to meet Ken from Foodbank to present our collection to him. When he entered our common room, he was overwhelmed by the generosity that our school community has shown. We really can be thankful that we work with such a thoughtful and community minded bunch of kids. A big thanks to Micheal Kalpakadis, Amanda Pacek, Nicole Coutts, Liz Van Genderen and Paula Possum Pitt who worked tirelessly on Friday morning last week to pack up the cans to allow space for teachers to not only enjoy the view of the cans but also their morning tea. Well done to the Green Machine for another champion effort!

An excellent night was had by all at the Year 12 Formal this year! The event was held at The Landing at Dockside under twinkling fairy lights, with a delicious three course meal and a lot of dancing. All of the young men and women looked their best and the teachers were all very impressed with the students’ behaviour. It was definitely an event to be remembered! Year 12 Farewell

To the class of 2016, all can I say, is a huge congratulations! It is so exciting that you have all made it to the end! Your graduation marks the culmination of all the hard work you have put in throughout your life as a student. Enjoy it, savour it and bask in the delight of achieving your goals. You have made us proud and we hope that you continue to do so as you start the new chapter in your lives. Never stop chasing your dreams, never stop learning, live life to the fullest and give it nothing but your best. Well done to every single one of you!

To the families of our graduating students, it would be remiss of us not to acknowledge the unwavering support you have provided to help the Year 12’s achieve their QCE. It is this support which has played an integral role in shaping their success so far, and it will help them to succeed in the future as well. Hats off to you all!

Indigenous Awards Night

The Indigenous Awards Night was held on 26th October. It is a wonderful way to end such a successful year for Cav Road’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. This year, we were privileged to have an important guest join us, Mr Selwyn Button, the Assistant Director-General for Indigenous Education.

Students received awards in the categories of Academic, Sport, Attendance, Encouragement, Leadership and Community. The evening was a fantastic opportunity for students to celebrate with their families, staff and community members, and to formally recognise their success and achievements of 2016.

The night was a huge success, and we would especially like to acknowledge and thank our guest speakers, Jharal Yow Yeh from the Brisbane Broncos and former student, Roshene Cowburn. A special thank you also, to the Cav Road Indigenous dance group for performing the traditional Aboriginal welcome dance, and our Masters of Ceremony for the evening, Isaak Spletter and Sharaya Summers. Congratulations to all students who received awards on the evening!

Year 10 Geography Moreton Island Camp

In Week 5, I had the pleasure of taking my Year 10 Geography class to Moreton Island for a two day camp. The students are studying coastal erosion occurring on the island and researching management strategies to lessen the impact of erosion in the future. It was great to be able to take the students out of the classroom and apply their knowledge to a real-world problem. Plus it didn’t hurt that we got to spend two school days on a beautiful island. We all had a superb time!

Year 8 Cell Models

Our Year 8 students have had the opportunity to bring together their artistic flair and their scientific skills as they produced cell models this term. The assignment asks them to relate the structure of two human cells of their choosing to the function that they perform. The models needed to represent the important features of those cells, and could be created from any materials the students were inspired to use. There were some outstanding artworks submitted with students choosing materials cleverly to best reflect the structures they were representing.

Japanese News

The excitement is building. Years of Japanese study will pay off as fifteen students of Japanese embark on the 2016 Cavendish Road SHS Study Tour to Japan on November 27. Accompanied by Mrs Karfs and Ms Nicholls the students will visit the tourist highlights of Tokyo, Kyoto and Hiroshima. They will put their Japanese skills to the test and enhance their knowledge of Japanese daily life and culture during their homestay with students of our Japanese sister school, Omiya Koryo Senior High School.

The homestay is always the highlight of the study tour with students of the two schools establishing life-long friendships and strengthening the relationship between the two schools. The Omiya Koryo – Cavendish Road SHS sister school relationship is over 30 years old. It was the first sister school venture developed to celebrate the sister state relationship between Queensland and Saitama Prefecture and as such documents relating to the development of the sister school agreement are held by the Department of the Premier and Cabinet.

The Cavendish Road SHS Japan Study Tour relies on the reciprocal study tour arrangement with our sister school Omiya Koryo SHS in order to offer Cavendish Road SHS students free of charge homestay and long term exchange opportunities in Japan. As such we are unable to offer payment to homestay families. We will host Omiya Koryo SHS students again in 2017 and strongly urge all Cav Road families, particularly those with students who may wish to participate in future Japan Study Tours, to support this important sister-school relationship.

Cav Rd donates to Lady Cilento Hospital

During term 3, Cav Road ran a charity drive to collect items for sick children at Lady Cilento hospital. Over 4 weeks, students and staff donated new books, DVDs, toys, clothing, crafts, and games to be given to Lady Cilento Children’s hospital in Brisbane. These items will be for sick kids to help distract and entertain them during what must be, for many, a very difficult and upsetting time.

Principal Corrine McMillan, Literacy co-ordinator Rachael Cuthbert and School Captains Rodney, Ben, Prosper, Jess and Ruby delivered these items in week 4, of term 4 to the Children’s Foundation Charity, which is located at the hospital. The staff were very impressed and extremely appreciative that the school had collected 8 large boxes of items that could now be delivered to the children staying in the wards.

For the first time that the drive has been run, which will hopefully become an annual event, it was a rousing success! The donations brought huge smiles to not only the staff and patients at the hospital, but to all of us who donated and delivered the items.

Thank you for your continual support in all our philanthropic efforts, Cav students, parents and staff!

Literacy Coordinator/English

Write4Fun Schools Writing competition

In Term 3, a large number of students participated in the Write4Fun Schools Writing competition. Write4fun encourages young student writers and artists with fantastic competitions, instilling a love and passion for writing.

In the most recent competition, Write4Fun announced that Cavendish Road State High School had more than ten students successfully progress past the initial judging in the 2016 Schools Writing Competition. This year, the competition was held throughout primary and secondary schools within Australia and received over 10,000 entries! Cav Rd has been recognised for outstanding writing as less than ten percent of schools showed this level of achievement.

Even though we did not receive first or second prize, this is an amazing feat that our students should be proud of. It is through their hard work, dedication and creativity that Cavendish Road has been recognised for outstanding creative writing. Well done, Cav Rd!

2017 School Leaver Strategy

What’s next for school leavers? Vocational education and training could be the smart next step. Vocational Education and Training (VET) is the right choice for many school leavers. VET qualifications can provide students with a pathway to employment or a stepping stone to university. The Queensland Government subsidises more than 300 qualifications, allowing eligible school leavers to gain a qualification at little or no cost. All school leavers, from Year 10 to Year 12, can register to receive more information about vocational and training opportunities in 2017.

By texting YES to 0476 850 648, school leavers can start receiving text prompts in 2017. The texts will connect them with information about training opportunities. Young people can choose how much or how little information they receive and they have the option to opt out at any time. Please encourage your school leaver to register with this service.

The Department of Education and Training (DET) is collecting the young person’s mobile number for the purposes of providing them with regular updates on training opportunities during 2017. The mobile phone number will be accessed by authorised employees or contractors of DET. The young person’s mobile number will not be given to any other person or agency unless they have given us permission or we are authorised or required by law. If you have concerns about how the mobile has been used please contact 1800 210 210 (this is a free call). Opt out details will be provided on every text sent by DET. This information service will automatically end on 1 December 2017.

Standard charges apply.

Drama News

What an amazing year Drama students have had in 2016. We have had many opportunities to participate in live theatre experiences, in-class workshops, and primary school collaborations. The students have demonstrated outstanding skills across all three dimensions within this subject and I am very happy to see them achieving such success. Good luck to our graduating Senior Drama students. I wish you a very relaxing holiday [you need the rest] and all the best with your 2017 endeavours.

Drama Night – Checkmate by Year 12 Drama Students

Congratulations students! This was a polished, entertaining production, showcasing the students’ ensemble skills. From conceptualising the CHECKMATE concept, to creating the stage and writing the scripts. A truly unique production you can all be proud of. Thank you to friends and family who attended the evening to support the senior students in their final Drama production. Well done year 12! Thank you to the stage crew, staff and student helpers on the evening.

Primary School Christmas Collaboration –Year 10 Drama Students

In Semester 2, Year 10 Drama students were given a challenge 5 weeks ago. Not a small challenge, but an enormous challenge. That challenge was to create a Christmas concert working with 130 Holland Park Year 5 students. What a great collaborative opportunity for our young leaders within the performing arts department. I would like to congratulate every student for their commitment and mature approach to achieving our goals. These goals were to engage, encourage and develop dramatic knowledge whilst working as a small group to tell a larger story.

Every student in Year 5 was on stage sharing the journey of Junior Clause and Mrs Clause to bring Santa into the 21st Century with “What Kids Want”. Year 10 students have created 11 scenes covering a “Visit to the Apple Store”, “Eating Vegemite”, “Beach time fun” and “Just Dance and FIFA” Wii playoffs. This is a diverse and funny production created by the Year 5 students, written by the Year 10 students and performed in front of the school body, plus family and friends. I would like to congratulate the staff and students at Holland Park State School for their continued enthusiasm for this program. The number of students participating grows every year, and we love it! Also, to the Year 10 students, well done! You have developed many skills working independently with a group of Year 5 students and have demonstrated leadership, maturity and excellent time management under pressure. I could not be prouder! The production was on Wednesday 23rd November.

The Musical – Popstars the Musical is coming to Cav Rd 2017

This is going to be exciting, very busy and very rewarding for students and staff involved. Auditions will be posted in the morning notices and a production schedule will be sent home early next year. There will be some Sunday rehearsals so a musical date claimer will be available on the schools website early next year. Parents the sound track is from the 90’s and full of memorable classics. We will be dancing and singing in the aisles. The performance will be in May and the dates are; Wednesday 24th, Thursday 25th and Friday 26th. We will have one matinee production for invited local guests on Tuesday 23rd May. We look forward to seeing you there! Don’t forget your dancing shoes!

Popstars! It’s a 90's musical, written by Neil Gooding and Nicholas Christo, with music arrangements by Isaac Hayward. It's a boy band versus a girl band in a hilarious brand new style packed with pop smash hits by THE SPICE GIRLS, BACKSTREET BOYS, N*SYNC, BRITNEY SPEARS, CHRISTINA AGUILERA, MARIAH CAREY, MC HAMMER and many more.

The play is set in a school in the 1990's where Mark is head over heels in love with his girlfriend, Queen Bee, Shannon Van de Witt. When Shannon learns that pop-band impresario Simon Austin is the surprise judge at the State Talent Show she dumps him for her chance at showbiz stardom. Mark rapidly goes from High School hero to High School zero. His garage band buddies rally around him and soon a plan for revenge is hatched to change their grunge band to a boy-band and snatch the Talent Show title from Shannon’s Candy Girls. There’s just one small problem... the boys can’t dance. Mark enlists the help of the ultra-talented, new girl, Ella to help with their boy band make over and sparks soon fly. Can Mark get the girl, get the Grand Prize and get even with the scheming Shannon closing in? It’s anyone’s guess as the countdown to the Grand Finale begins. It’s sure to be one to remember.

Cyber Safety is Everyone’s Responsibility

Bullying used to be something you could see or hear: face-to-face physical and verbal behaviour in the playground, in the classroom and on the way to and from school. Now, online technology and constant connectivity means children can be bullied through often anonymous contact or actions, anytime, anywhere, and often out of sight of adult eyes.

Cyberbullying most commonly occurs through:

  • comments posted in an open online environment, for example on social media sites, and
  • direct text, email or instant messages online or on a mobile phone.

At Cavendish Road State High School, we equip our students with many skills to ensure that they make positive choices regarding their online behaviours.

In 2016 our students have participated in

  • 10 lessons regarding cyber safety and respectful relationships
  • INESS internet safety presentation by former police detective, Brett Lee
  • Peer power point presentations regarding digital footprints and respectful behaviours

Friends and family can play an important in role in helping reduce the spread and impact of cyberbullying because cyberbullies may back down when they see that their target has support. Here are some simple steps you can encourage your child to take if they see or know that a friend is being cyberbullied.

  • Don’t forward messages or pictures. Though they may not have started it, they will become a part of the cyberbullying cycle.
  • Stand up and speak out against cyberbullying. Encourage the child to tell the bully that their comments or actions are hurtful and that they should stop.
  • Support your child’s friend by reporting the cyberbullying. Most websites have online help centres and reporting facilities, and online abuse is in violation of the Terms of Use of most social networking sites.

Chaplain’s Highlights

Chappy’s Writing Competition

The Year 7 and 8 students were asked to write a paragraph about a time when someone made such an impact on them that they are very grateful. The winner of the competition was Madison Lowe, who received a voucher worth $25, donated by Mr Joe Kelley Kelly MP.

Spin Off Gym Bike Challenge

Although we had a small team of only 3 students, plus myself and Miss Gardiner, the ‘Cavendish Road Generals‘ were very successful, winning their section of the competition. Together Charlie Fewtrill, Grace Tweedie and Kiralee Worthington raised over $1000 for the Cav Rd Chaplaincy, an amazing effort! Charlie also received the prize for raising the highest amount for an individual high school student. He received an iPod mini touch, which he sold and donated the money back to chaplaincy. To reward his generous spirit, the Chaplaincy Committee was delighted to reward him with a Penny Skateboard. The students really loved the experience and are keen to do it again next year.

Breakfast Club

Breakfast Club continues to run each Friday. A huge thank you to the Hillsong Youth Services!

Also, a big thank you for your ongoing support of chaplaincy. Together we are bringing hope to a younger generation.

The Roadhouse News

It’s the end of another great year at Cavendish Road. We’ve been extremely busy in the canteen producing our new Healthy Choices Menu, which we are happy to say was awarded “Menu of the Year” at the recent QAST Awards Evening. We’d like to say a big thank you to our hard working Canteen Staff who make it possible to produce such a diverse and healthy menu. We must also thank all of our Parent Volunteers who have given their precious time to come in and help us create our Magic Menu, making it possible to keep our prices affordable and our standards high.

It’s been great to see the acceptance from all of the students for our new Healthy Choices Menu. We love seeing their willingness to try our new Hot Food and Salad Range, and Daily specials. We realise there has been a lot of change and appreciate their involvement…letting us know which items they like and even offering up new ideas. We love the enthusiasm many of the teachers have shown towards the new Salad range.

We are looking forward to the challenges of 2017, and are keen to meet some new parents. If you can spare a few hours here and there or once a month, we’d love to hear from you. No handling of money is required, just friendly chatter and basic food prep. Also a great way to hear what’s going on at school.

Recipe of the Month - Superfood Salad

Cooked Brown Rice, Quinoa
Roasted Sweet Potato, Pumpkin, Red onion, Capsicum, and Baby Beetroot
Salt and pepper to season
Baby Spinach
Mix serve warm or chilled (Can be served with meat of your choice.)

Have a safe and Happy Holiday!
Roberta, Heather and the friendly staff at the canteen

Free advice and support for Queensland parents

Not every parent may need support, but it is ok to ask for help. Since the Triple P Parenting program started last year, more than 20,000 Queensland families have received free parenting advice and a helping hand. The Triple P Parenting program provides tips on managing kids’ behaviour, balancing work and family and the best ways of raising happy, confident children.

Research shows that children raised in a calm, consistent and positive home environment are more likely to succeed at school, have better jobs, experience more positive relationships and enjoy better mental and physical health. Parents who do Triple P are also more likely to have lower levels of depression, anxiety and stress, so there are plenty of good reasons for parents to learn more about the benefits of positively parenting their children.

The range of support includes an online program, topic-specific seminars, parent discussion groups and one-on-one consultations as well as more intensive, small group-based and individual programs.

For more information about the Triple P programs or to find a session near you, visit the Triple P website. Immediate Triple P help is available by phoning Parent line on 1300 30 1300 (from 8 am to 10 pm) for the cost of a local call.
