QCS Information Evening

Thank you to the leaders of our Senior Schooling team for the informative Queensland Core Skills Test, OP and Queensland Certificate of Education Information Evening which was held recently. Feedback from parents and students was very positive.

ASOT Focus This Week

At Cavendish Road State High School our common pedagogical framework is the Art and Science of Teaching (ASOT) authored by Robert Marzano. Our ASOT focus for this week is: How can I use categorising tasks to deepen students’ understanding? More information about our pedagogical framework is available at

Recent News

I recently emailed all parents and carers to share that I have recently made a decision to express my interest in contesting the seat of Mansfield as a candidate at the next State Election.

Whilst it has been and continues to be an honour and a privilege to serve school communities as a Principal for the past 11 years, and to lead Cavendish Road State High School, my passion and interest for public policy and its role in ensuring greater equality for all continues to grow. I am passionate about the transformative power of education and the role that education plays in ensuring positive life outcomes for all people regardless of their background.

This has been a significant life decision for me, however, I feel this is an opportunity for me to share my passion more broadly and to increase my sphere of influence about the importance of education to individuals, families, communities and to the future success of our Country.

When the Premier calls the election sometime in the next 12 months it is my intention to take leave for 4-6 weeks, at which time Ms Meryl Johnston, Associate Principal will act as Principal. Should I be unsuccessful in being elected to the Queensland Parliament I will return to Cavendish Road State High School as Principal immediately following election day.

Thank you for your continued support as together we lead this great school.

2017 Tech Challenge International Women’s Day

Two of our Year 7 students, Ashlee O’Keefe and Marina Rimmer (from Mt Gravatt East SS) were the 2016 Tech Movement Foundation Queensland State Winners. They have been invited to Launch 2017 Tech Challenge on International Women's Day at Google Headquarters in Sydney on Wednesday March 8th.

They designed an anti-bullying app which educates students about different countries and cultures, as well as informing them about bullying, how to prevent bullying and most importantly, how to get help if you need it.

Lord Mayor's Youth Advisory Council (LMYAC) 2017

Congratulations to Chloe Ellis' successful nomination to represent Cavendish Road State High School at the Lord Mayor's Youth Advisory Council (LMYAC) in 2017. The LMYAC aims to provide opportunities for young people in Brisbane to participate in Brisbane's civic life and foster an interest in community activities and initiatives. This is done by identifying local issues and engaging with each other in a public forum where students are encouraged to provide feedback and give their opinion about Council policies, local laws, services and programs that affect young people.

Parents and Citizens Annual General Meeting

The Parents and Citizen's AGM will be held next Tuesday 21 March in the Administration Block in B7 from 7pm, followed by the March general meeting. All existing memberships lapse at the AGM. Membership forms can be downloaded from the link below and emailed to pandcsecretary@cavroadshs.eq.edu.au or bring along to the meeting.

https://cavroadshs.eq.edu.au/Supportandresources/Formsanddocuments/Documents/Community/P%20and%20C/p-and-c-application-for-membership-2017.pdf

Parent and Citizens meetings are held on the third Tuesday of the month from 7pm in the Administration Block in B7. All parents and citizens are most welcome to come along.

Regular School Attendance

Research shows that in Queensland, higher student attendance at school is associated, on average, with higher student achievement.

Why is regular attendance at school important?

Regular school attendance will mean that your child gets a better chance at life. Your child will achieve better when they go to school all day, every school day:

  • They learn better
  • They make friends
  • They are happier
  • They have a brighter future

Why must I send my child to school?

Under Queensland law, you must make sure your child of school age is enrolled and attends school all day, every school day unless they have a reasonable excuse. Illness, doing work experience, competing in a school sporting event or going on a school excursion are reasonable excuses for being absent from school. Principals decide if the excuse given for your child’s absence is reasonable. Avoid keeping your child away from school for:

  • Birthdays, shopping, visiting family and friends, if they sleep in, looking after other children, minor check-ups or care such as haircuts.
  • Routine medical or other health appointments should be made either before or after school or during the school holidays.

While it is a last resort, it is important to understand that you may be prosecuted if your child is not attending school regularly.

A set routine can help school attendance

  • Have a set time to go to bed
  • Have a set time to get out of bed
  • Have uniform and school bag ready the night before
  • Have a set time for starting and finishing breakfast
  • Set a time for daily homework activities
  • Speak about school positively
  • Be firm, send your child to school every school day including their birthday and the last day of term!

Year 12 Biology Camp

As part of their course work, the Year 12 Biology classes conducted their field studies at Hastings Point. During the field studies camp, the students had the opportunity to observe and collect data from two different ecosystems – the Rocky Shore and the Wallum Heathland.

On the Rocky Shore, students observed a diverse range of organisms and noted their adaptations which allow them to survive and thrive within different zones of this environment. Students also snorkelled and saw a variety of organisms in the sublittoral zone, such as a wobbegong shark, octopus, brittle and feather stars. It was also discovered that sea lettuce is a green that won’t appear in Mia’s salads any time soon!

The Wallum Heathland provided another opportunity to observe a different set of organisms that have also adapted to their challenging environment. Students also enjoyed a tutorial on mangroves whilst kayaking along the river.

Rhett and Ted Brambleby, Bronwyn and Mick from “Adventure Education”, shared their wealth of knowledge with the students at the camp. They discussed the ecology of the local area and addressed the issues around the impact humans are having on our ecosystems.

German News

Assessment time

At this stage of the term, all of the German classes across all year levels are preparing for assessment. Year 11 and 12 reading exams are in week 8 and a speaking test is in week 9. Years 9 and 10 students’ reading exams are in week 8 and an oral presentation is due at the end of week 9. Years 7 and 8 students’ listening exams are in week 9. Students will have vocabulary/revisions sheets and their notebooks to use for revision. I would also encourage students to log onto their ‘Quizlet’ account for further vocabulary practise. Good luck to all!

Scholarships and Study tours

I have been receiving information about scholarships and exchange opportunities in Germany for the end of this year. Many of these opportunities involve hosting a student from Germany for approximately 3 to 6 weeks mid-year, and then that particular family then hosts the Australian student for the same period of time between late November and January. These programs are open to students studying German in Years 10 and above. I am happy to provide further information to interested students or families.

Congratulations

We had many Year 8 students receive outstanding results in a recent German test and other students also achieving impressive marks. Well done on making such a strong start to the academic year. We look forward to presenting students with certificates at the next Year 8 assembly.

Japanese News

Teaching Assistants

Cavendish Road State High School students of Japanese have been lucky to have the services of two Japanese volunteer teaching assistants in March. Miyu Sato and Naho Kanno enjoyed their time teaching calligraphy and origami, while our students tried out their Japanese conversation skills. We wish Miyu and Naho good luck in their future studies to become teachers in Japan.

Short Term Home-stay

Our sister school Omiya Koryo State High School will visit again in 2017. We are looking for 25 home-stay families for 8 nights from Friday August 18 to Saturday August 26 (departing in the morning). Host families are asked to provide the Japanese students with three meals a day, a bed (the student may share a room with a student of the same sex) and access to transport to and from school. Past host families have thoroughly enjoyed the experience of welcoming a Japanese student into their home. Your child does not need to be studying Japanese in order to take part in this program. As Cavendish Road SHS students also have the chance to be hosted by families of Omiya Koryo students during reciprocal CRSHS study tours to Japan there is no payment to home-stay families involved in this visit. The success and continuation of our program depends on the generosity of host families and their commitment to supporting this long standing sister school relationship.

Opportunity for Long Term Exchange at Omiya Koryo

We also need two long term home-stay families for two male Omiya Koryo SHS students arriving on August 18 and departing on October 27. It may be possible to divide the home-stay into shorter six week blocks. Senior students who host the long term Omiya Koryo SHS students will be considered for participation in a six week exchange at Omiya Koryo State High School during the 2017-18 summer school holiday period.

If your family wishes to provide a homestay to an Omiya Koryo student in August or you would like further information regarding the long term exchange program please email Ms Joy Balfour, the Japanese Coordinator, at jbalf7@eq.edu.au or phone 33940713.

The Year 11 Camp will occur at Maroon Outdoor Education Centre in Week 1 of Term 2 – Straight after the school holidays!

  • Tuesday 18th April: Buses depart from school (Elgar Street) at 8 am SHARP – Students need to be at school at 7.30 am to load their luggage on the buses and have their names marked off.
  • Friday 21 April: Buses arrive back at school (Elgar Street) by 2.30 pm. Students are free to go home from here.

If due to unforeseen circumstances a student is no longer able to attend the camp, please contact Nicole Coutts (Year Co-ordinator) via email: ncout6@eq.edu.au or on the school mobile during the week of camp: 0407 593 215. Parents and Essential Clothing List documents are attached.

Debating

Last Wednesday evening, the Year 12 debate team competed against Redlands College. William Halliday (1st Speaker), Quentin Ma (2nd Speaker) and Marcus Casara Newman (3rd speaker) were set the task of arguing that Edward Snowden should not be granted amnesty by the United States. Teams are limited to three official speakers for the debate. However, our other team members, Sharar Bhuiyan and Vinetu Vijay, were there to help officiate the debate.

It was a very close debate with only a two point margin. The adjudicator did mention that it was a very difficult decision before awarding the debate to the other team. She noted the effort all boys had put into their speeches. Two of our members were first time debaters, which shocked the adjudicator as the presented like they were old hand debaters. The team should be congratulated on their efforts and we wish them luck in their next debate.

Year 11 Legal Studies Excursion

The Year 11 Legal Studies students recently visited the District and Supreme Court Complex. Both groups were able to participate in a Judge talk with either Justice Peter Flanagan or Judge David Searles. The Judge talks provided insight into the role of a judge and the importance of the judicial system.

Two interesting civil cases were in action; a negligence case against Woolworths and negligence case against Lorna Jane. Criminal cases involving murder, drug offence and grievous bodily harm were also on trial. Students watched the presentation of evidence, legal arguments and sentencing. Court visits provide valuable firsthand experience in the operation of the Queensland Courts.

Year 11 Griffith University Ambassador Program

Last week, Jennifer Mihalcea and Barbara Simon made their way to the Griffith University Nathan campus to immerse themselves in a typical day of a university business student studying Tourism, Sport and Hotel Management. Students attended a lecture presentation by Dr Caroline Riot on Managing Sport: 2017 and beyond. The main focus of the presentation was sport management and the key issues in community sport participation, the professionalisation of women's sport, and the marketing and promotion of elite sport. Much of the discussion related to the upcoming Commonwealth Games. Jennifer and Barbara then participated in tutorial activities and a group task with students from other participating schools. At the end of the day students left with a clearer understanding of what awaits them should they select the university pathway.

Digital Technologies Year 10 Excursion to Queensland University of Technology

The students of 10DIG continued with their Arduino adventure with an excursion to QUT’s STEM hub – the CUBE. The class participated in an intermediate level workshop that built on their in-class knowledge of breadboard circuits and the basics of programming logic and processes. The students were extended with a challenge to navigate a driverless Arduino car round a track. They learned computational modelling methods that controlled digital and analogue inputs and outputs along with sensors to plan the behaviour of their car along the route. Congratulations to Reece, Nate, Harris and Alexis who won the competition for the shortest time around a circuit and achieving the fastest straight line speed.

Drama News

Week 8 already and students are working very hard within the Drama department to prepare for up-coming assessment. I would like to congratulate all the students for their hard work both in the classroom and at home. Well done.

Year 12 Workshop

Our senior drama students participated in a Political Theatre workshop based on EPIC Theatre techniques with the Australian Acting Academy. Students participated in 2 days of group activities to ensure an understanding of the theatre practices. This was an intense and rewarding workshop.

Professional Performances

All students studying Drama this semester will receive a letter of invitation this week regarding the Shake and Stir Production TROLL being performed in the school Hall. Please refer to the Drama Date Claimer for date and time.

Assessment Expectations

All drama assessment must be completed by the due date. Please refer to the student handbook page U for the schools Assessment Policy.

As one third of the assessment tasks are group/individual performances the drama student must wear BLACK PERFORMANCE CLOTHING. This consists of:

  • Black pants [track suit pants, dance pants, long shorts] are all acceptable.
  • Black T-shirt with no slogans or print on the front [otherwise students can wear the shirt inside out and back to front] this is totally acceptable.
  • No jewellery
  • Hair off their face.

Parents do not have to purchase black performance wear. If you don’t have anything black, then navy blue or bottle green is fine. Examples of male and female performance wear.

Indigenous News

It has been a busy start to the year for Cav Road’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students! We are very fortunate to be involved with several community programs - the Former Origin Greats (FOGs) ARTIE Academy and Brisbane Broncos have united with Cav Road, and other selected Secondary State Schools in South East Queensland to enhance the support given to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. The ARTIE Academy and Beyond the Broncos Program operate with high expectations for effort, behaviour, achievement and commitment.

Beyond the Broncos Program

The ‘Beyond the Broncos’ Program aims to provide support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in Years 10-12 to stay in school, complete their senior studies and prepare for the transition into further education and employment. It is an initiative of the Australian Government’s Indigenous Advancement Strategy. Former Broncos U20 player (and former Cav Road student),Elijah Alick, works with Cav Road’s Indigenous Year 10-12 students in his role as Community Programs Officer. Elijah visits Cav Road every Monday to meet with and mentor students, and also assists to deliver workshops every term on topics including culture, lifestyle and careers. The official 2017 launch of the Beyond the Broncos Program was presented by Broncos staff Scott Prince and Bo de la Cruz, with special guest from the Queensland Firebirds netball team, Romelda Aiken.

ARTIE Academy

FOGs continue to deliver their ARTIE Academy (Achieving Results through Indigenous Education) to our Year 7 to 9 students. Founded in 2010, the ARTIE Academy’s vision is to improve educational outcomes for Indigenous students attending Queensland State Schools by continuing the legacy of legendary Former Origin Great, Arthur Beetson. His vision and passion was for young Indigenous Australians to become educated by completing school and gaining a meaningful career.

Students are encouraged, rewarded and informed of opportunities in a concentrated effort to ‘Close the Gap’ in educational outcomes between Indigenous and non-Indigenous students. The 2017 official ARTIE Program launch on 9 February included a visit from Mr Craig Kemp, who demonstrated to our students the traditional art of boomerang throwing.

Numbai Homework Centre

The Indigenous Homework Centre has recommenced for the year. All Indigenous students (Year 7-12) are welcome to attend each Thursday from 3-4pm to receive assistance with homework and assignments. Teachers from the English, Maths, Science and Humanities departments (as well as the Indigenous Liaison Officer) are available to help students.

Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Foundation Scholarships

The Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Foundation, known as QATSIF, is an independent public trust established to provide young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders with a secure funding source to assist students in their senior years of education.

QATSIF's initial capital was created through the toil of previous generations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders. This capital has been invested by QATSIF's Trustee, the Public Trustee of Queensland, and the annual interest provides an income stream for scholarships and bursaries.

QATSIF’s QCE Scholarship Program provides scholarship funding to support students undertaking Year 11 and 12. The intention of the funding is to increase Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander student retention in Years 11 and 12 rather than simply sustain existing retention rates. Nine Indigenous students at Cavendish Road SHS – Will Blair, Jordan Bowie, Tia-Latitia Wong, Harry Isaac, Lachlan Newby, Kaiden Conlon, Tabaiis Nona, Jason Hancox and Cade McDermott - have been awarded Round 8 QCE scholarships from QATSIF. Three of these students recently represented the school at the QATSIF New Recipient’s Celebration at Brisbane State High School on 22 February 2017.

Guidance Officer News

At times, during their school years young people may have problems getting to school. This can be for a raft of reasons. Schools have a number of strategies to support students and these work well when families and schools work together. At Cav Road we have a referral system that allows the most appropriate person to work with the student. You can consult Teachers, Year Coordinators, Guidance Officers or Deputy Principals if you are keen to seek a referral.

Online programs such as Beyond Blue’s Brave Program, enable young people to discreetly complete 10 sessions that will provide resources and information about tackling anxiety.

https://www.youthbeyondblue.com/do-something-about-it/treatments-for-anxiety-and-depression/the-brave-program

In the event a person requires further support there are a number of agencies that can assist. Your GP or Headspace can be a great start. The following article gives parents some ideas on how to handle the situation.

How can I get my teenager to go to school?

Many teenagers seek independence and think they know best. No matter how hard parents try, some students may be reluctant or refuse to go to school. These are some ideas which may assist parents in dealing with teenagers and school refusal. Addressing this issue promptly and setting up good patterns in adolescence can lead to future success.

Did you know?

Missing one day of school each week adds up to 2 months missed over a year. Each day absent in high school has an impact on numeracy skills. Poor attendance may be associated with future unemployment, criminal activity, substance abuse, and poorer health and life expectancy.

What you can do...

Talk about the importance of showing up to school every day, make that the expectation. Regular attendance at school sets up good behaviours for regular attendance at work. Help your teenager maintain daily routines such as finishing homework and getting a good night’s sleep. On average, teenagers need 8 to 9 hours of sleep to be healthy and alert. You may also need to monitor their use of the internet, mobile phone and Television at night to ensure they are not staying up too late or being disturbed while sleeping. Try not to schedule hair, dental or medical appointments during school hours. Arrange family holidays during scheduled school holidays so that they are not missing out on classes and, therefore, will not have to struggle to make up for lost time. Don’t let your teenager stay home unless genuinely sick. Complaints of headaches or stomach aches may be signs of anxiety.

If your teenager wants to stay home to finish an assignment, rather than letting them stay home, expect them to go to school – make attendance the number one priority. Later, you can discuss with them how they can improve their study habits or adjust their schedule. Use the school’s assessment calendar on the website, to help your teenager plan their study so that they avoid working late the night before an assignment is due. Be sure to set a good example – how you meet your commitments impacts on how they will meet theirs. Talk to your teenager. What are their feelings about school? What interests them at school? Are there any difficult situations? It helps if you open these discussions in a relaxed way so that your teenager knows you are demonstrating concern, not authority.

Try to be aware of your teenager’s social contacts. Peer pressure can lead to skipping school, while students without many friends can feel isolated. Encourage meaningful extracurricular activities that your teenager enjoys, such as sports and clubs, to develop positive relationships and have success outside of a classroom setting. These activities can help your child feel part of the group, important to the school, and more motivated.

Set clear parameters around part-time work. Make sure that the hours your teenager is working do not impact on their ability to go to school the next day, or interfere with school assessment expectations or exam preparation. Familiarise yourself with the school’s attendance policy. This can help when trying to reason with teenagers.

Monitor your teenager’s attendance and school performance. Periodically check with their teachers to find out how things are going. If you find it difficult to contact several different teachers by phone, try email. Alternatively, if your school has a year level coordinator, they may be a helpful point of contact in relation to specific issues.

Remember...

You can talk with school staff (such as the teacher, year level coordinator, deputy principal or principal) to find out what assistance they can provide to keep your teenager attending and engaged.

Senior Schooling News

Over the past few weeks, I have been conducting Overall Position (OP) Estimate interviews with the Year 12 OP Eligible students. The purpose of the interview is to provide the students with their OP estimate and strategies they can apply to their studies this year to enable them to achieve an OP in the desired 1-15 range to gain entry into University. These interviews are still taking place and all students will have their estimates by the end of term.

Year 11 and 12 OP and Tertiary Selection Rank Information Evening

Our information evening was held on 14th February. Families who were unable to attend the evening are able to access the PowerPoint presentation from the evening on the school website.

UQ Careers that Shape the World forum

On Wednesday 19th April 2017, students in Year 12 have the opportunity to attend the Careers that Shape the World forum at UQ (University of Queensland). This event allows students to participate in interactive sessions in classes on campus at the university. More information on the event can be found on their website:

http://www.uq.edu.au/shapeyourworld/

Students who are interested in attending the event have been asked to register and choose the sessions they would like to experience. To be eligible to attend, students must have a genuine interest in attending university on completion of Year 12, have 90% and above attendance and have fully paid the resource scheme fee (or have arranged payment plans with the Finance Department).

Kate Niland (Guidance Officer) and I will be accompanying the students on the excursion. We will be travelling by bus to the venue – leaving school at 7.30 am and returning by 2.50 pm. Parent permission letters have been issued to students who have registered for the event and were due to be returned by Friday 10th March. Students with outstanding permission letters have been reminded to hand them in immediately.

Attendance – Weeks 9 and 10 of Term 1

Students are to check their attendance app regularly to ensure that they are above 95%. Attendance in every lesson every day for the remainder of Term 1 is crucial to their performance. There will be some exams scheduled in Weeks 9 and 10 for Year 11 and 12 students and I will also be continuing the OP estimate interviews during this period so it is important that students are present at school. Subject areas that have completed Term 1 assessment will be commencing work from their Term 2 topics in Week 9. Students must be present so that they don’t fall behind.

The Cross Country is being held on the last day of term. Students who have 95% to 100% attendance for Term 1 will go into the draw for an Apple or Android tablet. This will be awarded at the Cross Country.

QParents Queries

Can I make a partial payment if there is an invoice for a large amount?

Yes, parents can make a partial payment in QParents. You should select the check box next to the invoice you wish to pay, then click the box containing the payment amount. You may then edit the payment amount to reflect the amount they wish to pay for that invoice before clicking 'Pay with card'.

A parent at our school is having trouble making payments on the QParents app.

Some users have recently reported errors when making payments on an Android device via the QParents App. They are directed to the BPoint portal but do not receive a "payment successful" message and the payment is not processed. If you are experiencing this issue, please uninstall the QParents app from their Android device, then download and re-install the app via Google Play.

I'm having trouble validating my ID documents

The most common problems encountered when validating identity documents online are with birth certificates and marriage certificates. This is because there are so many different variations of these certificates across different time periods and different states in Australia. Some tips to help are:

  • Double-check that you have selected the right type of certificate (that you have chosen the time period that matches your certificate).
  • Make sure you have entered your name as it appears on the certificate, not your current name (if it is different).
  • Make sure you are using a full birth certificate, not an extract. A birth certificate extract cannot be used as an identity document when registering for QParents.
  • Click on the question mark icon next to a field for more information. This will display a sample picture showing where on your document you can find the required information.

For common enquiries, please see the QParents School and Parent FAQS section of our help materials site or contact Karen McFarlane kmcfa19@eq.edu.au or

In Touch

We have tapped off the year with a great start. Our Interschool Touch teams remain undefeated and we are seeing students run our patterns and plays with a great deal of success. Students have been selected for the first Schools Touch League (STL) held on Monday 20th March at the Gold Coast. Permission slips for this carnival should have been received by now. These need to be returned to Mr Loth or Ms Farrelly as soon as possible. We depart school at 7.15am from Elgar Street. The draw has yet to be finalised, so we are unsure as to when we will return. We will be in touch with this information when we receive it. Congratulations to the following students:

Cavendish Road U12’s Cavendish Road SHS ‘Keen as Mustard’ Touch Team

You might ask, why the strange name, but the girls seem to like it and think it is funny so we have stuck with it and are now becoming a force to be reckoned with! Thirteen girls from our Year 7 and 8 touch program are representing Cavendish Road State High School on Thursday nights, playing in the girls’ competition at Brisbane Metropolitan Touch Association. Our team of up and coming touch players are super keen (Keen as Mustard) and have already improved significantly. We lost our first game to a very strong opposition (older and more experienced) but since then have played two more games winning the last by nine tries. I have enjoyed meeting the parents and families of these girls and look forward to watching these girls have fun and develop into great touch players. Go Cav!

What’s Coming Up

Exciting news! Our drone has arrived. Within the next few weeks Mr Loth and I we will be implementing this technology during our lessons. We are super excited about how this technology will enable students to see themselves play and therefore better help them to understand what specific things they are doing right and wrong. All of this will only aid them to improve their personal performance. Please stay tuned.

Pre-Season Netball Success

Our Netball Academy has set the scene early for a stellar year in 2017. Eleven Cav Road girls represented strong South District teams at the Met East Netball Trials last week, with Mikaylah Ah Toon and Keely Mak impressing the selectors and earning spots in the Met East 19 & Under team. They will compete at the State Titles in Brisbane later in the year. Congratulations girls!

The Super 7 Tournament at Brisbane Netball Association proved to be another successful day for the Netball Academy. We were invited to compete by Wavell SHS, who have traditionally organised the carnival as a pre-season tournament for Northside and Sunshine Coast schools. Our 2 Cav Road teams, made up of a combination of Year 8 and Year 9 students, competed against a variety of schools including Ferny Grove, Beerwah, Kingaroy and Clontarf. Year 10 netballers Steph Kirk and Caitlyn Greene also came along to assist with umpiring of the carnival.

Both our teams showed determination and composure throughout the day, earning a spot in both their respective finals. Our Division 1 team was defeated by the hosts, Wavell SHS, in a tight, physical game that went down to the final whistle. The girls now know they will need to work on their strength and physicality if they are to have a chance of beating Wavell in a rematch! Our Division 2 team blew Narangba out of the park with a convincing win in their final. The opportunity for quality game play so early in the season will hopefully put us in good stead for a successful 2017!

Date Claimer: Reminder the first 2018 Year 7 Netball Academy Trial is from 9:00 – 11:00am on Friday, May 5.

Finance News

Statements

We have commenced emailing statements out to parents, carers and guardians. The February statements were emailed on the 27th February, 2017. If you have not received a statement and you know that there are still amounts outstanding on your student account, please contact finance@cavrdshs.eq.edu.au. Statements are not issued when a student’s account has a zero balance.

The wording of the email and the subject line of statements are controlled by the Department of Education and is the same for all State schools. You will see that the subject line says, “Debtor Invoice Statement”, please note that this is not an invoice but a summary version of the student account, therefore a “Statement”. If statements have a “-57.00” balance, the student account is in credit, do not pay the “-“balance. All statements are sent from an individual’s department mailbox, if you reply to this mailbox be aware that due to the many enquiries that we have when statements are issued that replies may take a couple of days. We thank you for your patience.

If you would like further details on your student accounts, please login on to Q Parents, your 24/7 portal for student and financial information.

Parent Debtor Account Split

There are occasions where parents would like to have their student accounts split, so that both parents can contribute to the student account. This can occur when we have both parents/carers agreement in writing to the split of the student account, or there is a legal order that requires the student account to be split. Agreement forms for parent debtor split can be obtained from finance@cavrdshs.eq.edu.au.

Often when students are moving from primary school to high school parents have already negotiated with the primary school to have the student account split for payment. This arrangement stays in place until we have written agreement from both parents/carer’s, or a legal order, before we are able to make changes to the parent/carer payment split. This can only be applied retrospectively if there is written agreement received by the school by all parties with an agreed start date of the split. Cav Road State High School staff are not able to intervene on behalf of any of the parent parties, or to negotiate with an individual parent for agreements in writing to be forwarded to the school.

Payments Due or Now Overdue

Term 1 of the Student Resource Scheme is now overdue. Please make payment as soon as possible to ensure that resources continue to be available for your students. Term payments are due by the last Friday in the first two weeks of Terms 1, 2 and 3.

Term 1 payment was due by the 3rd February, 2017.
Term 2 payment is due by the 28th April, 2017.
Term 3 payment is due by the 21st July, 2017.

All student resource scheme payments are due in full by the 21st July, 2017 unless otherwise arranged with the school.

The next installment of $1290 for the USA Tour is due by the 3rd April 2017.

Ski Trip installments of $500 and $520 are due on 24th March and 24th April 2017 respectively.
