Principal’s Report

Tradition and Innovation have long been key pillars in our purpose to provide an outstanding education within a caring community. Together with Community and Excellence we seek to achieve and celebrate success through a commitment to individual excellence.

The completion of the Alan Sampson Sports Centre last term has allowed us to bring the entire student body and school staff, the daily “Community” at Cav, together for the first time. Our first whole school parade occurred on Friday 7 June and focused on the Kokoda community within the school. The parade

  • Was led by the school captains David B and Chloe E.
  • Commenced with an acknowledgement of traditional owners by our Indigenous Prefect Jude S followed by the national anthem.
  • Mr Usher, with the Principal’s address, shared the meaning of the school motto “Nil Sine Pulvere”, “Nil Praeter Optima” emphasising to students the rewards of a great work ethic.
  • A video, created by Prosper Musukuma, celebrated the achievements of the students and teachers representing the school at the 2019 Brisbane Kokoda Challenge.
  • The Sports Prefects, Elyse B and Brandon E, presented a 2019 Sports Report which included the announcement of the 2019 winning sports house, “JOHNSON”.

The whole school parade on Friday 19 July celebrated the Arts in the school with Arts Prefects, Lily B, Aaron F and Audrey B, sharing their passion for the Arts and presenting a video highlighting Arts learning and achievements of students within the school. Three of our talented musicians, Hayden P and Ben S on electric guitar with vocalist Arabella N then performed beautifully to the school.

These parades are a fantastic opportunity to bring our whole school together, to celebrate student achievements and for our student leaders (Captains, Vice-Captains and Prefects) to be more visible leaders within the school through leading the parades and increasing opportunities for public speaking. All of the leaders are to be commended on their contributions to-date.

The schedule for the remaining parades for term 3 is

Friday 2 August – Celebration of Indigenous culture in the school with NAIDOC celebrations
Friday 16 August – Celebration of STEM
Friday 30 August – Celebration of the Wellbeing of Students
Wednesday 11 September – The official Opening of the Alan Sampson Sports Centre with special guests including Grace Grace (Minister for Education) and Alan Sampson (Cav Rd Principal 1997 – 2010).

The Semester One Report Cards were emailed to parents earlier this week. The whole school summary results clearly demonstrate the strong culture of learning evident across Cavendish Road State High School with high expectations for all students and staff. An excellent result of 95.8% of results at A, B or C standard, 99% Satisfactory or better for behaviour and 97.3% for effort. Overall, an excellent set of results when considered on a whole school level. Almost 70% of students achieving at A or B standard is also an excellent achievement. A student receiving an Excellent or Very Good for behaviour and effort in any reporting period is always a good indication that students are working hard on their goals. On every measure this represents improvement and growth when compared to the similar reporting period in 2018.

A further opportunity to hear about your student’s progress and gain a better understanding of their performance and further possible improvement strategies is provided through the Parent/Teacher Interviews which will be held onTuesday 30 July 2019.

Students should use the information from these interviews, the reports and other teacher assessment feedback to consider academic goals for Semester Two. In addition to setting goals, students should use this information to inform them of the actions they need to take to achieve their goals.

Congratulations to all students and staff for this excellent set of results.

School Opinion Surveys - Parents/Caregivers, school staff and a random sample of students are encouraged to have their say in this year’s suite of School Opinion Surveys by providing their opinions about what this school does well and how this school can improve. Each of the online surveys will open until Friday, 23rd of August 2019. Access details for the Parent/Caregiver Survey were sent home with the eldest student in each family on Monday 29th of July. The survey can be completed via computers, tablets or smart phones with internet connection. If you have not received any survey access details, please contact the school office on 33940777 or email admin@cavendishroadshs.eq.edu.au

Wellbeing at Cav Rd

Cav Rd does a fantastic job of ensuring students receive not just an excellent academic education but also a good foundation around social and emotional learning. The Pastoral Care program is developed by the wellbeing team and supports students in developing resilience, setting goals, safe online behaviour, and respectful relationships, and creates an awareness of wellbeing. This week staff participated in two hours of mandatory professional development and our Deans presented information from the Positive Schools Conference they attended earlier this year. We heard about the incredible Eddie Woo and the importance of wellbeing to support academic engagement. We learnt about Richard Gerver and the role people in schools play to help nurture self-confidence, self-worth, creativity, innovative thinking, teamwork and communication skills. The team from Cav Rd that attended the conference are now planning to review and refine our Pastoral Care program even further to ensure we are providing students with the best possible well rounded education.

You can read about the conference and the presenters including Eddie Woo, Richard Gerber, Dan Haesler here:

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD)

The NCCD is an annual collection of information about Australian school students who are receiving adjustments due to disability. The school team is currently going through the process of recording and verifying NCCD data to be submitted by early August.

A student is counted in the NCCD if they receive reasonable adjustments at school due to disability. Each year, schools collect the following information about the student, including:

  • Their year of schooling
  • The level of adjustment received
  • The broad type of disability (physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional)

Please note that while data is collected at a school level, personal details such as student names or student identifiers are not provided to federal education authorities as part of the NCCD.

Please read the 2019 Information Notice and the Fact Sheet for Parents, Guardians and Carers if you require further information.

Senior Schooling

Term 3 Focus – Year 11 and 12 students

I would like to take the opportunity to welcome back our senior students for Term 3. This term is an extremely busy term particularly for our Year 12 students.

The Semester 1 results have now been finalised and we have commenced program changes for those students who have not achieved success in some of their subjects in Semester 1. Year 12 students now have to be mindful that they are achieving a minimum of a passing grade in all subjects this semester to be eligible to receive their QCE (Queensland Certificate of Education) at the completion of Year 12.

I will be speaking to the students who are at risk of not achieving success and have sent letters home to parents seeking their support to make the required program changes.

All Year 12 students will be receiving their OP estimate this term. They are about to commence their QTAC applications and will need to be aware of their current estimate.

Year 11 students are strongly recommended to make subject changes as suggested by their class teachers. Students who have received a D result for unit 1 have an unsatisfactory result recorded for QCE. Students who have been unsuccessful in more than 1 subject are now at risk of not achieving their QCE if they do not move out of that particular subject/s. Teachers have contacted the parents of these students and students will now make the relevant changes in consultation with the HOD Senior School.

Year 12 QCS Test

On Tuesday 3rd September and Wednesday 4th September, our Year 12 OP eligible and Tertiary Selection Rank students will sit their 2019 QCS Test.

All Year 12 students will be required to attend school on both test days. Students who are not sitting the QCS Test will be involved in an alternative program of instruction. More details regarding the test and alternative program arrangements will be emailed home to parents closer to the test dates.

TAFE 2020

Students wishing to complete a TAFE course in 2020 can start the application process now. If your student intends to complete a TAFE course, they need to take the first step in the application process by talking to the VET Coordinator, Mrs Stubican, and Head of Department Senior Schooling, Ms Karyn Trapp, in K16. As TAFE will start taking school supported applications from 22nd July, it is important that students start the application as soon as possible. To avoid disappointment it is essential that students enquire at K16 to receive all necessary paperwork. Applications that are not made using the correct procedure will not be approved by the school.

Studying with TAFE usually means a day out of school to attend classes. Therefore, attendance history is an important consideration for the school. It is also only open to students who will be completing Year 11 and 12 in 2020 and have chosen a non-ATAR pathway. Year 10 students will need to discuss their intention to study at TAFE during their SET-P interview. Students will still be required to select 6 subjects in case a TAFE course does not run or other circumstances eventuate.

Please look through the TAFE Handbook for Brisbane that outlines the advantages of studying at TAFE along with specific course information, QCE credits, career pathways and costs involved:

Year 9 Parents

Just a reminder that your student will be part of the BYOD network next year. We hope you will attend our upcoming Subject Selection evening (Tuesday 20th August 5PM in the Auditorium) where you will be able to view and ask many questions about what type of laptop will be suitable for your student over the next 3 years.

Throughout term 3, we will be checking all the year 9 laptops for damage/warranty issues. We need to log all jobs by the end of the term before the ADP and warranty expires. This is a good time to make sure you child is using OneDrive so the swap from school owned to BYOD is less stressful.

All school owned laptops must be returned to D10 no later than Friday 6th December.

For information about bringing your own device please go to this page on our school website.

Drama

Welcome to Semester Two everyone. It has been a great two weeks meeting new year 8, 9 and 10 Drama classes. Already we are into assessment having viewed a live theatre performance in week 1 titled SCHOOL DAZE by Shake and Stir Theatre Company. This was a great performance and I am sure your student has discussed this with you at home. There is so much going on in the drama department with three incursions; School Daze, 1984 and 7 Billion Friends. Four visits to QPAC [Queensland Performing Arts Centre] viewing School of Rock, Storm Boy, Antigone and Chicago. We have two inclass workshops which are assessment related with Greek and Political theatre and our much anticipated very last Senior Drama production in October.

Look out for permission letters, these come home regularly and ensure all consent forms are returned to the finance window. Enjoy the semester; I very much look forward to working with you.

End of Semester One – Theatre Sports Competition

At the end of Semester One all junior Drama classes were taught Theatre Sports in order to develop and assist students with team building, improvisational skills and problem solving new challenges. In class students learnt the games, formed groups and then competed against each other to select an overall class team winner who would then go onto represent the year level in the inaugural Junior Theatre Sports Challenge to win the Theatre Sports OSCAR. This was a great competition with a massive audience and our judges had a very entertaining job. Overall congratulations to Year 10 for taking out the OSCAR.

I am looking forward to the Semester Two competition. Watch this space.

Incursion – SCHOOL DAZE by Shake and Stir Theatre Company

This was an outstanding production that every high school student should see. Peer pressure, self image, school stresses, work commitments and bullying are all covered in this part verbatim, part narrative piece, which then allows important conversations to open up in the classroom. The production is utterly relatable drama – it’s not patronising, it’s hilarious, it’s hard- hitting. Shake and Stir.

Drama Classroom Assessment Clothing

Drama student assessment covers three specific areas;

PRESENTING – acting with a pair or small group
FORMING - writing scripts
RESPONDING - analysing live theatre performances

PRESENTING REQUIREMENTS – Students MUST wear black performance clothing. As the picture demonstrates round neck t-shirt, long tights, ¾ tights or long shorts. Students are to wear black socks or bare feet. If a student does not own black clothing, please wear navy or dark green. Do not go and buy anything for your student. I am sure they have something suitable at home already. Just ask the question.

Toni Ryan – Drama Coordinator

German

MLTAQ - Speech Competition

Good luck to the students from Years 7 and 9 who will be participating in the Brisbane Multi Language Speech Contest at Griffith University on Sunday 4th August. This is the inaugural Contest so it is wonderful to have Cav Road represented at this event. Viel Glück and we look forward to finding out the results of your hard work. Thank you to Frau Gav. for organising and preparing our entrants.

Germany 2020

At the end of last semester, a meeting was called for students who might be interested in a trip to Germany in late November 2020. We had many enthusiastic students attend and those present were given letter to take home outlining the costs, requirements and other general information. If your son/daughter has not yet returned the form and is still interested in being part of the trip next year, the expression of interest letter will need to be returned by the end of the week. Once we have confirmed final numbers, we will be in a position to commence planning.

Subject Selection for 2020

Subject selection evenings for 2020 will take place this term. We look forward to meeting and answering any questions you or your child might have about the advantages of studying German in Years 9 and 10, as well as into Years 11 and 12 as an ATAR subject.

Touch Football

June - In Touch

U12S MET EAST Selection

In June, Vaughn P and Ryder K road tripped all the way to Chinchilla for the U12 boys’ state championships. The Year 7 Cav Rd Touch Academy students represented Met East and won the competition defeating Darling Downs in the grand final. Vaughn was named as a shadow in the State team a massive feat and one we are very proud of. The girls Met East team with Cav Rd Touchies Kamryn B, Matlida R and Tahlia B will head off to Longreach in early August. Good luck, we wish you all the best.

U18S and U15s MET EAST

Last month BMTA hosted the combined 15’s and 18’s Touch Football State Championships. Overall Cav Rd Touch Academy had twelve players across both the boys and girls divisions. The girls were represented by Bella A, Renae N, Tyler B, Shajuate A and Billie M, while the boys were Jude S, Khoen P, Heath C, Jay B, Haydon W, Luke S and Rafe P. The 18 boy’s team made the Grand Final but went down by one try to Capricornia. While both the 18 girl’s and 15 boys’ and girls’ teams were narrowly defeated in the semi-finals. It was a pleasure to watch our Cav kids compete and congratulations to Renae N and Jude S who were named in the Queensland State Team. Special mention to Billie M and Rafe P who were named shadows. All the best in your preparation and good luck at Nationals.

CAV RD – Girls Thursday Nights

Every Thursday night 4 Cav Rd female teams compete in the girls BMTA competition at Whites Hill. There are two teams in the 13 years and two in the 15 years competition. During the season all teams have played exceptionally well making semi-finals. They have improved out of sight and we cannot be more proud of them. Congratulations to 13 year “The Hoodoo Gurus” coached by Mr Cross who went down in the Grand Final. Many of these girls are reasonably new to the game and have done exceptionally well this season. The 15 year team “The Smiths” were competing well above their age and narrowly lost to strong storm team by a couple of tries. A big thank you to wonder Mum, Gabrielle Smith (Mia’s Mum), Tonia Crawford (Sophia’s Mum), Andrea Sotiriou (Tahlia’s Mum) and Mardi Saverin (Eve’s and Tia’s Mum), for helping out and managing the girls, and also Heath Crawford and Ash Cross for stepping up to help coach, I couldn’t do it without you.

Brisbane All Schools

On Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 of June, three Cav Rd teams, a 13 and 15 year girls’ team and an Open mixed participated in the Brisbane All Schools. The girls competition was very tough with quality teams from in and around Brisbane. The fifteen girls had to work hard to be at the top of their pool by lunch time to cross over for the finals rounds. They played well in the quarters and were successful in making the semi- final. I was very impressed and proud of the girls. They kept All Hallows who won this division at the Brisbane and at Qld All Schools last year to a two all score line for most of the game. Our strategy was to shut down the open side to stop their very fast sweepers to the try line. This worked for much of the game until we started to roll on their subsets, when we let in a try. Unfortunately we could get one back and All Hallows went on to win this division. The 13 girls won the grand final 4 tries to 0. They played excellent footy right until the hooter in the last game. The semi was our toughest opposition. We play these girls, All Hallows every Thursday night but we really focused on our mid field defence so they could not make ground to sub or get to our try line. The score was 1 all for a very long time until we put one over to win. It was very exciting and I was very proud of their tenacity and determination. The work ethic of these young ladies is outstanding and well above their actual age of 12 years. A big thanks to all the families that came to support and the students that attended to help referee. A special mention to Mr Ashley Cross. The draw wasn’t kind with back to back games. Mr Cross would warm the girls up and have them ready for the game so I could just focus on the game at hand. Thanks Ash, you are amazing and we appreciate your contribution to our program.

The Open Mixed team were successful and also won their competition. Mr Loth said all the senior boys and girls that played were focused and driven to be the best they could. Well done!

Netball

On Monday 29th July, Cav Rd will send two teams to the Vicki Wilson Cup/Shield Regional Netball Carnival in Redlands, in an attempt to overcome the best teams within the Metropolitan East region and progress through to the State Finals. Last week they received some valuable match practice against Brigidine College and both our teams sneaked through with the win. The Junior team won by a single goal and the Open side finished up with a 41-36 victory. Time on court with each other was just what they needed and the girls will take confidence from their efforts and will give everything they have next week. GOOD LUCK GIRLS!

Kokoda Challenge 2019

The training begins early for the students that nominate to participate in one of the most gruelling long distance endurance events on the calendar. Early training sessions had students sweltering in 35-degree heat and battling through seasonal afternoon tropical thunderstorms. Many months later and with three tough long distance training walks under their belts, the Cav Rd students were ready to compete in the 2019 Kokoda Challenge. The physical, mental and emotional demands that the Kokoda Challenge place upon individuals and teams is what makes the event so difficult and challenging. The character building and life experiences that take place within a supportive environment are invaluable.

This year, Cavendish Road had 21 teams compete in the Kokoda Challenge. Eight teams competed in the either the 30km or 48km Challenge at the Brisbane event held at D’Aguilar National Park and the remaining thirteen teams competed in the Gold Coast 48km and 96km events held at the Gold Coast hinterland. Two of those teams led by Mr Reynolds and Mr Baker participated in the demanding 96km challenge, which sees competitors climb 5000 vertical metres over the 96km. Of our school’s 80 participants that started the event, 77 completed the challenge they had set themselves, whilst three students pushed themselves to their limit until injury or illness forced them to retire from the race.

The school’s participation would not be possible without the dedication of our leaders, teachers and parents. As always, for any successful event, there is a huge effort that takes place behind the scenes, from the efforts of the school’s administrative staff through to the team support crews who keep everything going while the teams are out on the track. We appreciate these contributions and thank you all for your commitment to our students. We very much appreciate the ongoing support of the school P&C to help with the funding of the shirts and hats.

As always, the students and teachers from the mighty “Cav Rd” were outstanding ambassadors for the school and were an admirable example of the values of the challenge - courage, endurance, mateship and sacrifice.

Creative Generation

Creative Generation – state schools onstage (CGEN) is an annual arena spectacular that showcases the talent that our future generation has to offer. Since its inception in 2005, CGEN has only grown in its splendour, size and the eclectic talents students from all over Queensland have to offer the world.

Over the past seven months nine of the talented students at Cav Rd have been rehearsing for CGEN to bring the performance together. They spent most of week one at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, and the effort and enthusiasm that they portrayed throughout the process is inspiring and commendable.

They have graciously given up much of their own free time and some school hours to rehearse for the performance. CGEN rehearsals provide an opportunity for students to display their talents and extend their networks with professional artists, and it is a fantastic stepping stone into the world of the performing arts.

The students who were involved in the televised arena spectacular include, Hugo S (Year 11), Juliet B, Olivia N, Kashti P, Zoe R (Year 10), Shabari P, Nira P (Year 8), Benjamin F and Jessica H (Year 7). Not only did these students showcase some of the burgeoning talent Cav Rd has to offer, but they showed what it truly means to be a student of Cav Rd and should be immensely proud of their mammoth efforts.

Miss Skyah Fishpool – CGEN Coordinator

Queensland’s Gold Coast came alive as qualifying players of Handball Australia’s Youth (U18) and Junior (U20) representative women's teams solidified their training at the GC Sport and Leisure Centre during school holidays. The Australian Handball Federation (AHF) is sending two women's teams to the International Handball Federation’s (IHF) Oceanic Cup to be held at the L’Arene Du Sud venue, Paita, New Caledonia between 11th – 17th August 2019.

Almost half of the players in the junior women's teams come from Brisbane Handball, a club that has been established to focus on developing junior players for challenges like the World Championships. Further three members of the Australian Youth (U18) teams are Cavendish Road State High School students, namely Lily C, Sascha G and Georgia H.

Australian Youth (18) player Lily C comments: “Not only is Handball a great sport to watch with a fast scoring pace but it is fantastic to play. I enjoy the highly competitive nature of this seven-a-side team sport requiring accurate passing, throwing, catching and dribbling.”

Sascha G says: “It is easy to forget everything else when you are playing handball as it is such a fun, fast-paced, exciting sport. I also love how it requires you to work as a team, and bond with other people. We have a great team and Manager Sophie Hills.”

Georgia H adds : “I wish to acknowledge our talented coaches, Juan Granada and Beata Hajos, Brisbane Handball Club, for their expert guidance and support of the Youth (U18) team. We are so privileged to have you accompany us to the Oceanic Cup”. “GO #QUOKKAS!”

Handball has been an Olympic sport since the Munich games in 1972 and is massively popular in Europe with a growing following worldwide. The International Handball Federation (IHF) is actively engaged in developing young Australian players via the annual Youth (U18) and Junior (U20) World Cup qualification pathway.

Our girls encourage all Cavendish Road SHS students to try European Handball (an Olympic Sport) either at school or come join our club: Facebook.com/brisbanehandballteam.

Also don’t forget the Inter-School Team Handball Competition, Saturday 10th November, 2019, held at Brisbane State High School.

Finally the Girls ask you to show your support - #QUOKKAS and to follow their progress on line in the Oceanic Cup @

Representation – Rugby League State Championships Opening Ceremony

The QLD School Sport 11-12 years Rugby League State Championships opening ceremony took place at Carina Jnr Rugby League Football Club on Thursday 27th June. This year marked the centenary of the competition.

Many current and former rugby league players led the junior teams from all over QLD onto the field, including Jai Arrow, Steve Renouf and Matt Lockyer.

Our students Faith (Year 10) and Renee (Year 11) represented Cavendish Rd State High in front of a large crowd, with Faith singing the National Anthem and Renee giving the Welcome to Country. They are pictured with Titans player Jai Arrow. Jai is formerly of The Broncos and played in game 1 for Qld in this year's State of Origin before sustaining an ankle injury.

Kokoda Youth Foundation Program

Year 11 Student – Jared H

Back in April, Year 11 student Jared H was accepted into the Kokoda Youth Foundation Program in the Logan Team – thirteen kids and four volunteer leaders from all different schools/different backgrounds.

Over the weekend they completed the 96km Gold Coast Challenge and became the fastest Logan team to complete the challenge and finished first out of the four Foundation teams in front of Brisbane, Gold Coast and Tweed. A very big task with kids of varying levels of fitness and mindsets in the team, some who have never done any sport or activity like this before.

They’ve spent the last three months training together twice a week, learning about the Kokoda History, building lifelong friendships and learning lots of different skills from each other and their leaders.

The next three months they will continue training in preparation for their trip to PNG in the September school holidays to conquer the Kokoda Track.

When they return from PNG the program continues until this time next year with once a month community service.

This is a fantastic program for any student. Congratulations Jared!

Duke of Edinburgh

Are you someone who enjoys giving back to your community, or taking care of the environment? Do you love building on your skills or trying new things? What about challenging yourself to do unfamiliar activities with your friends? If any of these sound like you, then the Duke of Edinburgh International Award may be ideal for you.

The Duke of Ed aims to encourage young people to learn new skills, explore new places and meet new friends along the way. If there is something you have always wanted to try, the Duke of Ed may be just the motivation you need to get started.

How to Sign Up

An opportunity to complete preparation for your Duke of Edinburgh sections will occur throughout Trimester 3 of Junior Sport this year. It would be ideal for all new candidates to choose Duke as their sport during this time in order to receive optimum support starting out.

Prior to this, there will be an information session on the process of how to sign up to the program here at Cav. Students will be required to have parental consent, as well as pay a fee towards the International Award Program prior to starting Trimester 3 Sport. Information for this session is below. Attending this session is important; however, another opportunity for information will occur in week four or five if you do miss this.

In the meantime, you can access more information on the Duke of Edinburgh website below. You are also more than welcome to email the Award Leader, Ms Keri Vincent at kvinc35@eq.edu.au for questions regarding the Cav Rd Award.
