THE PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
“Cavendish Road State High School - A School of Academic, Pedagogical
and Sporting Excellence”
Thank you for your warm welcome upon my return. It’s certainly great to be back. My time as A/Regional Director affirmed that we are part of a great school community - progressive, dynamic, forward thinking, innovative and a strong collegial team. Special thanks to Ms Johnston for her remarkable leadership during this time. Ms Liz Van Genderen, Ms Kim Tonges and Mrs Nicole Coutts who backfilled in acting positions also did a superb job in their respective roles. The strength of our school is the direct result of the great people that make up our entire team.
Creative Generation, State Schools on Stage
Special thanks to Ms Meg Robson and Mr Tony Lashmar for their work with 16 of our students who performed in Creative Generation.
2015 Athletics Carnival
Thank you to the HPE staff, especially Mr Anthony Caruso, Mr Tom Fisher, Mr Dale Zimmerlee and Ms Nikki Bairstow for what has been described as the best Track Carnival to date. Congratulations to all students who have been successful in gaining District and Regional representation.

All students have taken home their individual reports to share with their families.
Girls State Bill Turner Cup Champions
Congratulations to Ms Fatima Flores, Ms Mel Andreatta and the Bill Turner Cup girls’ team who became the State Football Champions! The National finals are scheduled for 1 & 2 September. Congratulations and all the best to the girls who will be competing at the National Championships in Newcastle.
Gala Night of Music
What a night our music students provided on Tuesday night! The Jazz Combo would not have been out-of-place as a professional group performing at a Jazz Club as regular artists. The concert band and symphonic band both filled the stage, so it was incredible when they joined forces to from a massed band with almost 100 performers.
Obviously none of this would have been possible without all the hard work of our music staff. Thank you to Mr Darrin Wood, Mr Tony Lashmar and all of The ARTS Team for Tuesday’s music gala evening.
Year 11 Dance
Last Friday evening the Year 11’s celebrated their annual Dance at the Greek Club at South Brisbane. It was a highly successful evening and the behaviour of students should be commended. Thank you to all of the staff who assisted in making this a successful event.
Quadrennial School Review Process
Thanks to the entire Strategic Leadership Team for their intense and focussed work preparing for our ASAA Audit and Quadrennial School Review Process and all the staff who were involved.
Metropolitan Melbourne Visit to High Performing Schools
At the request of the Regional Director and Director General, Mr Morgan, Ms Amy, Ms Johnston and I, and Mansfield State High School’s Administration Team will be visiting four of the highest performing public schools in Melbourne – Melbourne Girls’ College, Melbourne High School, Balwyn High School and The University High School. Our Admin Team will be sharing their findings with our school and Region.
Our ASOT focus for the week remains:
“How do you support students to reflect upon their learning?”
Please record your thoughts on the whiteboard in B7 so as we continue to grow together.
Spotlight on Attendance
I urge all families to ensure that our students come to school every day. Our school target for attendance is 95%. We know from recent research that attendance directly affects student’s academic performance.
Corrine McMillan
Principal
CHURCHILL FELLOWSHIP PRESENTED TO CORRINE MCMILLAN
Congratulations to our Principal, Corrine McMillan who was recently presented with a 2015Churchill Fellowship. Corrine is one of only 21 Queenslanders presented with this award and one of 109 Australians. This remarkable achievement will enable Corrine to undertake research in a number of countries which ultimately will benefit state school education in Queensland.
Corrine’s research project is outlined below:
“The future economic success of all countries is dependent on the quality of their education systems. Western Governments face the challenges associated with continued vertical fiscal imbalances. Despite this reduced spending there is increasing pressure on schools and education systems to perform competitively internationally with greater autonomy and accountability.
I will be travelling to the countries with the highest performing education systems and schools – Singapore, Finland and to the OECD in Paris to investigate how these governments prepare system and school leaders for contexts of increased autonomy and accountability imperative for system and school improvement.”
We wish Corrine the very best with her research project.
NAPLAN SUCCESS
Once again, students at Cavendish Road State High School excelled in NAPLAN testing. As a school, we have improved our results in all 5 strands (Reading, Writing, Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation, Numeracy) and continue to perform above state and national standards.
I make particular mention of our outstanding achievement of 100% of students in Year 7 and 9 surpassing the national standard in both strands of Reading and Numeracy. Whilst state and national standards in writing has trended down, Cavendish Road students have shown a significant improvement in writing.
This is a significant achievement given over 500 students across Year 7 and 9 participated in the 3 days of testing.

These results reflect the embedded approach to literacy and numeracy across all curriculum areas and vindicate our approach to student learning. NAPLAN is ‘one’ measure of student understanding within literacy and numeracy. The data obtained from NAPLAN provides the opportunity for teachers to reflect on our delivery of learning and informs targeted teaching at Cavendish Road.
We are a school that continues to lead by example in public education. I would like to congratulate our students on the outstanding results achieved. I would also like to acknowledge the staff who lead our classrooms each day and you, our parents and guardians of the students of Cavendish Road State High School. Your support is an integral component to our success.

EVERY DAY COUNTS
Going to school every day is the single most important part of a child’s education. Students learn new things at school every day – missing school puts them behind.
We all want our students to get a great education, and the building blocks for a great education begin with students attending school on time each and every day. Students develop good habits by attending school every day – habits that are necessary to succeed after school, whether in the workplace or in further study.
Missing school can have a big impact on students academically and socially. It can affect their test results, including QCE, and, just as importantly, it can affect their relationships with other students, and lead to isolation.
There is no safe number of days for missing school – each day a student misses puts them behind, and can affect their educational outcomes.
Each missed day, is associated with progressively lower achievement in numeracy, writing and reading. Please work with us to ensure your student is at school all day, every day.
Home study for Year 12 students
As Year 12 students are in the post-compulsory phase of their education, they are old enough to take additional responsibility for their own study program. Accordingly, this year they are again being offered the option of home study on Wednesday afternoons during the latter part of term 3 and into term 4. If this option is taken, students will commence home study from Wednesday 16 September 2015.
Home Study is a privilege and is only available for eligible students who have met the following criteria:-
- All assessment has been submitted
- All uniform and electronic device detentions have been completed
- All time accrued due to unexplained late arrivals to school has been paid back
- Students are not required by any teacher to attend any presentations related to their chosen subject or complete classwork
Under this arrangement, parents are requested to offer an assurance that your son/daughter is at home actively involved in school work or involved in educational activities at another site during this time. If you would prefer your child to remain at school on Wednesday afternoons, please advise the school via return email or contact Sarah Potter. If students are going to any place to study other than home such as the State Library, they must change out of their school uniform. Furthermore, if they are found to be abusing this opportunity, then this privilege will be rescinded. If you have any further questions on this matter, please feel free to telephone Sarah Potter on 3394 0791 or email her at spott38@eq.edu.au

Omiya Koryo Sister School Visit
The end of July brought the 25th visit by our Japanese sister school, Omiya Koryo Senior High School. This visit marked the 30th anniversary of the Queensland –Saitama Prefecture sister school relationship between the two schools and once again celebrated the friendship developed between their students. The visitors arrived on Saturday July 25 and spent the weekend experiencing the everyday life of their Australian host families. They participated in a range of activities such as sporting events, shopping, visits to Mount Coo-tha, the Gold and Sunshine coasts. On the first Monday of the visit they were lucky enough to observe the Cavendish Road SHS athletics carnival and compare it to the event held at Omiya Koryo each year.
The host students and their visitors relaxed together at Dreamworld on the Wednesday. Here not only the students but also the teachers enjoyed rides such as the Buzz Saw and the Giant Drop. Throughout the week the Japanese students ran special classes to teach Cavendish Road students about Japanese pop culture, calligraphy and traditional games and dances. The school week culminated in a concert and Thank You party hosted by the Omiya Koryo students and teachers.
Monday August 3 found Cavendish Road SHS host students waving a tearful goodbye to their new Japanese friends as promises were made to stay in contact and meet again during the next Cavendish Road SHS school visit to Japan.
Cavendish Road SHS would like to sincerely thank all the families who volunteered to welcome an Omiya Koryo student into their home for ten days. This is not a paid exchange program and without their support we could not continue this valuable relationship which also provides homestay opportunities for Cavendish Road SHS students when we visit Japan. We hope the enjoyment of sharing your lifestyle and country with your visitor and the new friendships made are a wonderful reward for your kindness and hospitality.

Guidance Officer News
We often speak about Life/Work balance. What does this mean? How do we gain it? Balance is about harmony, a levelness and a feeling of calmness. When considering Life/Work balance we discuss, work/school, social, family, diet and physical activity. Sleep is another important feature of balance. Over the next couple of editions of the newsletter I plan to publish information on this notion of Life/Work/School balance.
This week sleep is in the spotlight ….
With competing aspects in our lives, at times, sleep can be neglected. Currently there is not a great deal of information on sleep and adolescence. Besides the attached articles the following links provide some good information on sleep, sleep routines and how to best achieve quality sleeping.
These are from the Sleep Health Foundation site

Subject Selection Evening – Yr 10 into Yr 11
On Monday evening Ms McMillan, Ms van Genderen, Mrs Amy and I had the pleasure of presenting to our current Year 10 students and their parents. The purpose of the evening was to give some information about selecting subjects for Years 11 & 12. For those of you who were not able to make it or for those who would like to check some information. Please see the PowerPoint attached.
This information is general information. There is great wisdom in seeking more information that is relevant to your own situation. Guidance Officers, Head of Department are very willing to assist.

Science Academy and Subject Selection
Year 8, 9 and 10 students will be choosing subjects shortly, and some students with an interest in science may be wondering about the Academy of Science classes. Participation in the Academy of Science is by invitation only. Invitation is based upon a combination of academic results for science, behaviour and effort grades, and teacher recommendations.
The purpose of the Academy of Science in the junior school is to foster an interest in science and to provide opportunities for students to engage in science beyond what is offered in the national curriculum. In the senior school, the Academy of Science is focussed around Biology, and accelerating student learning to accommodate the study of an undergraduate university Biology course.
Year 7 and 8 (2016) Academy of Science students will participate in an extra-curricular enrichment program, which will include excursions and/or camps, science projects and collaboration with the Academy of Ideas. Eligible year 7 (2015) students will receive invitations into the Academy of Science class in term 4.
The Academy of Science class in year 9 (2016), will still follow the national curriculum, however, at different times the Academy of Science class will delve deeper into a particular topic or investigate related topics that the mainstream classes will not. They will also be given opportunities to participate in other extra-curricular science opportunities. From year 10, the Academy of Science class has a purely biological focus. The year 10 (2016) Academy of Science class will be run in two parts. In semester one the students will study a Biology preparation course, and in semester two they will commence year 11 Biology. Year 11 (2016) Academy of Science students will continue their year 11 Biology studies, and additionally, they will study “Biological Systems”, an undergraduate Biology course from Griffith University. It is not possible for new students to join the Academy of Science class in year 11.
2016 will also see the introduction of a Griffith University undergraduate Chemistry course, accessible to our year 11 (2016) Chemistry students. More information will become available in early 2016. Should you have any questions regarding the Academy of Science programs offered at Cavendish Rd SHS, please contact Michael Denner (Head of Science): mdenn37@eq.edu.au or 3394 0756.
Science Students Inspired by Dr James St John
Spinal injuries have long been thought to be incurable, but thanks to some novel new approaches by Dr James St John and his team at Eskitis Institute at Griffith University, there is some real hope for the future. Dr St John and his team are investigating the use of glial cells from the inner lining of the nose to repair damage to the spinal cord, and results look promising with clinical trials set to begin in 2018.
Dr St John shared his research with year 9 science students on Wednesday 5th August as they are studying body balance and control, including the nervous system. Students saw the results of some overseas trials on dogs with spinal injuries, with amazing results, including a dachshund who was able to walk again! His research also investigates using glial cells to fight harmful bacteria in the brain, which may cause diseases such as Alzheimer’s. He also spoke about his career and the opportunities that exist in scientific careers.
Students asked some very insightful questions of Dr St John, who was very impressed with their depth of thought. I would like to thank them all for their attention and great behaviour! Thank you also to those who have given feedback about the impact of the talk on their students- several parents have told me how the lecture started dinner table conversations about Dr St John’s research and post-school careers.
Dr St John is happy to be contacted for any further questions about his research. Please see Mr Denner for his contact details.
What’s happening in Senior Schooling?
Our Year 12 OP eligible students will be sitting the QCS test on Tuesday 1st and Wednesday 2nd September. By now students should have received their full practice QCS results and be able to reflect upon and commence their final preparation for the four papers over the two days. Students are reminded they must provide all of their own equipment for the two days. Equipment lists were distributed during QCS lessons. We wish our QCS students every success.
Students not sitting QCS will be completing Certificate II Workplace Practices along with regular classwork to ensure they receive their QCE. Attendance at school is compulsory.
Following a very successful year 10 into 11 subject selection evening, we look forward to seeing our year 10 students and parents next week for SET P interviews. Students wishing to enrol in TAFE courses for 2016 are advised to see Ms van Genderen or Ms Tonges in B10 staffroom as soon as possible. These courses fill quickly. If you require any further information regarding the above please do not hesitate to contact me Lvang14@eq.edu.au

German News
Wow, we are already half way through term 3! At the end of Term 2 we held our German Day of Excellence together with some of Buranda’s best German students. We had a lovely group of talented Year 5s and 6s join us for a few hours. We spent the morning discovering cultural, historical and practical aspects of Germany and Fußball. It was a great time linking with one of our local primary schools and we will be holding another Excellence Day at the end of this term but this time in conjunction with Coorparoo Primary School.
The year 7s have proven to be avid and able language learners! We are enjoying their enthusiasm and their willingness to learn.
Jack McCredden (Year 11) has returned from his 4 week scholarship trip and here is a short report from him:
“P.A.D. Einsteigen!” I heard every day, boarding the U-Bahn. These were indisputably the best four weeks of my life. In my first five days with 50 international students in Bonn, forming a cohesive German sentence on the spot was a bit of a minefield. Having lived with a family in Andernach on the Rhein whilst attending school for the following two weeks, though, I managed to iron my speech and writing out and I was speaking like I never had before. With a whole new ability I experienced a Germany that money can’t buy. As a group we then set off to Berlin and München for the next ten days. Although I had to leave the close friends I made in just four weeks and the amazing country itself, I can keep forever the memories and the abundance of German I’ve learnt. I’ll be back there as soon as I can!
‘Jack (second from the right) in front of the German Parliament Building’
This term we have also welcomed Theo and Justin, two exchange students from Germany who are living with Harrison and Jean-David from our Year 11 class. At the end of this year, Harrison and Jean-David will have the outstanding chance to live with these two young men for 9 weeks over Christmas and New Year. We have just farwelled Amelie, another German, who was with us a short 4 weeks. She was an excellent contributor to classroom activities and conversations. These visits are such fantastic and valuable learning experiences for our senior students to use their language and connect with native German speakers… a rare opportunity in Australia!
Oktoberfest is our next big cultural excursion as well as surviving Term 3 exams… all the best to our Year 12s who will be tested in all 4 skills (speaking, reading, writing and listening) in Week 9.

Maths Teams Challenge Success!
On the 31 July, 32 enthusiastic Cav Road students participated in the Maths Teams Challenge at Stretton State College. The competition gives students the opportunity to put their individual mathematical and problem solving talents as well as their teamwork skills to the test. Cav Road has a strong history of success at the Maths Teams Challenge. This put the pressure on this year’s teams which they more than coped with winning a Silver medal in the junior division, a Silver medal in the intermediate division and a Gold medal in the senior division. To win a medal in every division entered is our best result yet. Particularly impressive was the seniors 100% result in the first round of the competition. “Unheard of” was the comment made when the result was announced.
Congratulations to all students involved. Your eagerness and determination were what made the day. It was great to see so much fun and teamwork on display while solving challenging mathematical problems. You were exceptional representatives of Cav Road and made the day easy and enjoyable. Thank you also to the parents who volunteered their time to help out on the day. Looking forward to next year!

Numeracy at Cav
Visiting numeracy expert Marg Buckle has continued conducting professional development afternoons to a variety of departments. These presentations to the Business and the Design Technology departments have given the staff ideas that will help expand the role of numeracy in their learning areas. Teachers across the school are now better equipped to support the students in their numeracy development.
We have been further developing links with some of our main feeder primary schools to ensure that we are using a consistent approach to numeracy. If we can provide a smooth transition between primary school and high school the students are more likely to succeed. Cavendish Road has worked with Holland Park State School to develop assessment that tests a wider range of numeracy skills.
We are just beginning to work with year 5 and 6 students at Seville Road State School on problem solving. A series of workshops has been planned to help students develop their mathematical literacy and to practise a variety of problem solving techniques. These sessions will build student skills and make them familiar with the techniques used at Cavendish Road.
The Humanities Department have been incorporating numeracy into their Year 8 and 9 Geography courses. The Year 8 students have been identifying the points of latitude and longitude of features on a map. In order to do this the students had to employ a variety of numeracy skills such as measuring, use of fractions, and understanding units and direction. The year 9 classes have been using data in tables and graphs in order to design choropleth maps. A choropleth map is a coloured map which shows regions or areas which have the same characteristics. This activity develops skills such as collating, representing, and manipulating data.

Academy of Ideas meets with Australia’s foremost Futurist, Tony Ryan
Have you ever considered the world in the future? Ever thought about the possibilities of robots being our equals, or cars that fully drive themselves? These once distant dreams are fast becoming a reality, and in the not so distant future we will find ourselves living amongst these technological advancements that once only lived in our imagination. These are exciting times we are living in, however we must be mindful of the challenges that we will face in the face of such exponential advancement. How will we address problems that are bound to unravel as we set our sights on 40 years down the road? This very question is at the heart of an exciting new course being offered through the Academy of Ideas here at Cavendish Road SHS.
Currently our Academy of Ideas students have been working on designing a living wall, a project which provides many benefits to society including a natural means for heating and cooling buildings, improved air quality, proven mood elevation for citizens and a possible response to the very real shortage of ‘green space’ our big cities are facing. The Future Problem Solvers program enables students to flex their creative and critical thinking skills as they set out to address some of the most interesting conundrums to cross the human mind, even before they become problems. Just last week our Academy students were fortunate enough to work with Tony Ryan, a leading innovator, educator and futurist as they tackled some of the most advanced ideas conceptualised to make the future better. Tony facilitated discussions around torches that run off the heat produced by your hand, shoes that produce enough energy to charge your phone simply from the friction you produce from walking in your day to day life, and a self-correcting pen. Our students thoroughly impressed Tony with their creative thinking and ability to pose questions in light of the possibilities the future holds. What a truly incredible experience to see these young minds hard at work with such an inspiring thinker to facilitate their creativity.

Year 11 Griffith University Ambassador Program
On Thursday the 3 July 2015 seven eager students made their way to the Griffith University Nathan campus to immerse themselves in the world of a typical day for business a student majoring in Travel and Event Management. The program arranged for the students involved a lecture presentation on the Australian Travel Industry which was followed by a guest presentation from the Marketing Director for Brisbane City Council who informed the students of the future developmental plans for Brisbane’s CBD and the opportunities that will flow on to the travel industry. Students were then given a group task to plan an extensive itinerary for a couple taking an overseas holiday. Groups were formed from all participating schools which ensured all students participated outside their own school group. The day came to interesting conclusion with the groups’ presentations of their ideal itinerary for the couple’s overseas holiday. At the end of the day students left with a clearer understanding of what awaits them should they select the university pathway.

Year 10 Business Law Court Excursion
Over the last two weeks Year 10 Business Law students have made a visit to see the local Holland Park Magistrates Court in action. Students were exposed to the courtroom procedures and protocols and when possible were given a quick tour of what happens behind the courtroom namely the holding cells for people awaiting trial or sentencing. This certainly stressed upon the students the seriousness of the dealings of our local court. Some groups were also lucky enough to have the Magistrate address them regarding their role in the legal system. This experience can never be replaced by the textbook description of the workings of the court.

Drama Department Update
We have so much live theatre this term that students from Year 9 through to our Senior Drama students will be wonderfully transformed into the world of theatre magic.
SLAMMED written by Stefanie Brooke Harper is set in a contemporary high school amidst troubled teens. SLAMMED follows 15 year old Jake Ryan battle his way through Year 10 and find his place in the world. We are immersed into real life issues such as; One Punch Can Kill, Cyber bullying and Mental Health issues.
SLAMMED was recently viewed at the Powerhouse Theatre at New Farm by our senior drama students and the performance was outstanding! A standing ovation at the end of the performance means this production is going to be a huge success. We look forward to welcoming Stephanie Brooke Harper to our school to discuss the production later in the term.
Chop Logic by Shake and Stir is coming to Cavendish Road to showcase Shakespearian plays for year 9, 10, 11 and 12 Drama students. ‘The context and circumstances of Shakespeare’s plays can baffle young people. Kings, Queens, Princes and Fairies – not many students can relate to that. Chop Logic leaves the language untouched, but takes the characters, themes and plots from a selection of Shakespeare’s most popular works and places them into modern day settings. Complexities dissolve away and the essence of each play becomes crystal clear, highlighting that contained within the exotic ingredients are deliciously identifiable human emotions, dreams and desires – and EVERYONE can relate to that’. Chappy News
SHINE Girl group concluded with a wonderful celebration lunch at a local restaurant. The girls had the opportunity to express what the program meant to them and how they have been impacted by what they’ve learned during Shine Girl. Everyone agreed that this has been a very valuable and unforgettable experience, and everyone expressed thankfulness for their opportunity to take part in this program. I must shout out a big THANK YOU to my volunteer co-facilitator Shelley Harvie, who gave up so much of her time and who also drove the bus for us.
Chappy’s Mystery Spotlight is something that I have been doing with the staff at our school for the past 8 weeks. Each week I interview a staff member. Through email, I forward that interview to all staff to guess who the interviewee was. The first person to guess correctly is awarded a chocolate bar. I then email a photo of the mystery interviewee for all to see. Many staff members have expressed how much they appreciate this small game because it creates conversation, helps people get to know each other, it is fun and it creates ‘community’.
Chappy Conference is an annual compulsory 4 day professional development requirement for all chappies. This year it was held at a new venue—Sea World Resort. The conference was a very good way for me to network with other chaplains and to be encouraged and strengthened through the great teaching, wonderful worship and really interesting electives.

The 2015 Bill Turner Trophy Queensland Finals Series
Cavendish Road are off to the national finals next month with a 2-0 win in the State Final over rivals St Peter Claver on Wednesday 5th August. Carly Banks Munnings double secured their passage to the coveted Trophy finale in Newcastle which will be played on the 1st & 2nd of September. Cav Rd has not participated in the Bill Turner Trophy National Finals since 2011 and the teams are eager to head down to Lake Macquarie, NSW.
The girls put in an excellent team performance and displayed some great football over the 2 games. All the hard work on the training paddock paid off when it mattered most as the team rose to the challenge. Clinical goals either side of the break secured a well-earned victory over a quality St Peter Claver outfit.
Special mention to Carly Banks Munnings for her excellent performance, scoring an astonishing total of 4 goals in 2 games, leading the team to clear victories, as well as Grace Bond-Tweedie for her strong performance in the midfield; Hannah Allen and Macy Hicks for their solid and consistent performances in the back, and Jamie Torpey who displayed exceptional individual skill up front.
The team will now be working hard for the next few weeks as they prepare for the trip down to Newcastle and look forward to bringing the trophy back to Qld. GO CAV!

Rugby League Update
District Champions, Broncos Cup Finalists and State Representatives
Our school has a proud history of competing in Queensland’s top tier Broncos Cup Challenge competitions where we have regularly qualified for a place in South Queensland’s State Finals. This competition is a fantastic opportunity for students to practise the skills they learn in class and at training in a high level environment that is well recognised and endorsed by NRL clubs and scouts.
Although the U13’s Broncos Cup team had a tough season they did a great job competing throughout the season and eventually reaching the State Quarter Finals. We ended up losing to the eventual winners of the competition Wavell SHS in what was an extremely tough battle at their home ground. Congratulations to the boys on their efforts throughout the season and a big thank you to all the parents and staff that assisted throughout the year.
Special mention must go to Justin Pratt and Anthony Meyers who were consistent contributors – we could not have done it without you both. Phil and I look forward to celebrating their successes later in the year at our Celebration Night Dinner. Also, a big congratulations should go to Strak Kosanovic and Justin Pratt who have led both the Year 7’s and Year 9’s to the Metropolitan Finals – see below for their reports.
Year 7 Rugby League update
The Year 7 Rugby League team has won the District Premiership this month with a convincing win over Rochedale SHS 30-14. Tries were scored by Te’Rakato Ogilvy-Rogers (2), Brock Ashton (2), Casey Houston, Rhythm Rhind, with conversions from Taelyn Hape, Jack Morris and Ned Barbara. Player of the final was Te’Rakato Ogilvy-Rogers. This team, in its inaugural competition, was undefeated for the season and were a credit to themselves, the school and the Rugby League community for the way they conducted themselves each week and the spirit in which they played. The squad now goes on to meet the winners of other school districts in the Metropolitan Finals knock-out series.
Full squad members: JT Tapau, Brandon Wong, Declan Brown, Te’ Rakato Ogilvy-Rogers, Casey Houston, Taelyn Hape ,Luke Chambers, Ned Barbara, Jack Morris, Braedon Thomas, Tanasio Sanday-Winikerei, Jakob Myers, Rhythm Rhind, Brock Ashton , Noah Heron, Jackson Waaka, Kain Niemann, Harrison Lewis.

Year 9 Rugby League update
The Year 9 rugby league squad picked up where they left off last year with another undefeated season as district premiers. In the Grand final the side scored a comprehensive victory over Rochedale SHS victory at Carina. The team produced a faultless first half where 12/13 sets were completed to take a half time lead of 20-0. Despite a brief fightback by Rochedale, the Green Machine came away with a 36-8 win including tries to Inosi Nasiganiyavi (2), Jackson Roberts (2), Ayden Davis, Kapu Broughton-Winterburn and Brandon Elliot.
Selecting a player of the match was difficult with so many of the boys contributing to the victory, however the person selected by the referee as player of the match was Jackson Roberts. It has been a privilege to coach these boys again and I look forward to the upcoming Metro finals where they will be tested against the best sides from the region. It has been great to have new players join the team as well as depth in key positions. The squad for 2015 was Kohl Beazley, Ayden Davis, Inosi Nasiganiyavi, Eli Taylor, Rob Williams, Kapu Broughton-Winterburn, Jackson Burgess, Tom Fowler, Jackson Roberts, Phil Alifa, Glen Chang Wai, Will Blair, Noah Pearse, Will Pilot, Mitchell Williams, Jordan Bowie, Tim Gardiner, Sam Toma, Jay Levitt, Drew Price, Brandon Elliot and the ever reliable water boy and manager Ethan Neal.
A special thanks also to the parents for their support throughout the season, particularly Phil Gardiner for his attendance, extra hands, good humour and umbrella when I got caught out!

Representative updates
We would also like to congratulate all of the students who participated at the recent U12 Rugby League State Championships. The following students played extremely well for Metropolitan East Teams and represented our school’s core values throughout the duration of their time away. Well done, Braedon Thomas, Declan Brown, JT Tapau, Rhythm Rhind, Taelyn Hape and Tanasio Winikerei.
A special mention should go to Tanasio Winikerei and Declan Brown (see below) who were selected in the Queensland Invitational Team that competed at Nationals in Darwin. From all reports these boys did a fantastic job representing our State and school, and were part of the team that finished third at the National Championships earlier this month.

Qld All Schools Preliminary Games
The first round game for the Qld All Schools starts on Thursday August 27th over at Whites Hill for a number of our teams. It would be great if we had a number of staff and students to come along and create a supportive atmosphere for these games. The remaining round games will be played from October 7 – 11, 2015.
We look forward to keeping our school community updated with more fantastic results from the Touch Football / Rugby League Academy over the next month leading into All Schools in October.

BPOINT as the new preferred Payment Method for Blenheim Cavendish Road State High School
All Education Queensland schools have been advised that from now on BPOINT is now the preferred payment method of payment for all student invoices at hours of making a payment. The school will receive a daily report detailing those who have made a payment. You may still pay by cheque, cash or eftpos or credit card over the phone if you wish, but EDU QLDthe Department of Education and Training is promoting BPOINT as preferred payment method from now on.
If you choose to pay via the traditional payment methods, the school will issue you with a One School receipt from the office, but either way we can see from our end who has outstanding invoices and who does not. Please refer to http://www.bpoint.com.au/payments/dete for further information.
ALSO, PLEASE CHECK INVOICE AMOUNT CAREFULLY AND PAY DOLLAR AND CENT VALUE ACCURATELY, THANK YOU.
