Cav Boys win National Touch Final and Queensland All Schools
Our Cav Boys were undefeated up until the final day of the National Finals and played Narara Valley High School from the Central Coast of NSW after they had beaten us in the final round game during the morning. It was extremely tense and went down to the wire with Cav Rd only securing the victory in the final 90 seconds. We were able to hang onto our 6-4 lead to be crowned the inaugural National Champions!
Two weeks later the boys went on to win the Queensland All Schools Touch Championships.
Congrats Mr Loth, Mrs Farrelly and boys!
QCOT Excellence in Teaching Awards
Congratulations Mr Kosanovic who has been named as a Finalist in the Annual Queensland College of Teachers Dr John Dwyer Excellent Leadership in Teaching and Learning Award for Outstanding Leadership. This award was introduced in 2012 to recognise classroom teachers or school administrators who have taken a leading role in enhancing teaching and learning in their school. Congratulations Mr K – a worthy finalist for this Award.
Motivational Media Visits
Special thanks to Ms Gardner and her team for organising Motivational Media for our students. This was a great way to start the last Term of the year.
Congratulations Mrs Hickey!
Mrs Hickey was a Clayton Utz Art Award finalist. The award offers a $10,000 prize to a Queensland based artist or an artist with a strong connection to Queensland. Here is the link to the finalists page:

Enrolment Update
We opened enrolments for Year 7 2018 at the start of Term 4. Expressions of Interest for enrolment in 2017 are now closed.
There appears to be a record number of siblings seeking enrolment and the in-catchment enrolment continues to increase due to families buying into the catchment. Further, the number of high density town houses and units being built makes it extremely difficult to predict the final numbers.
Expected changes to parking on Cav Rd and Holland Rd
Brisbane City Council (BCC) have agreed to paint a solid yellow line on either side of the entry to the staff carpark to assist with staff and student safety. Further parking and traffic changes are being considered by BCC. I will keep you informed as decisions are made.
Students and Staff Prepare for Cambodia and Vietnam
Twenty one students and three staff went on camp last weekend in preparation for their work in Cambodia and Vietnam later in the year. Staff and students are volunteering three weeks of their time in disadvantaged, third world communities building a school and clean water facilities.
Cav Quest
Congratulations to all staff and students involved in Cav Quest last week – a great success!

OptiMinds
Two of our teams competed at OptiMINDs on the weekend. Our Senior Science and Engineering team couldn't repeat their runners-up effort from last year but still won a special "Spirit" award for their attitude and outstanding team effort. Our Language and Literature team (mostly made up of Year 10 students) enjoyed their first attempt at State finals and while they did not pick up an award, they enjoyed having the opportunity to compete alongside teams comprised largely of Year11 and 12 students. Well done students!
Awards Evening
Congratulations to all award winners and musicians who performed on the night. Our awards night is an opportunity for us to highlight and recognise our students who achieve outstanding results in many different facets of school life. Congratulations to all award winners!

Science and Maths Awards
Those of you in attendance at the awards evening may have noticed the introduction of some new awards in mathematics and physics. Time did not permit for these short biographies of the award patrons, so I feel it would be remiss of me not to tell you about the great Cavroadians who have put their names to these awards.
Warren King was school captain and dux of Cav Road in 1965 and went on to have a successful career in CSIRO as a physicist and research leader. He is now taking an interest in promoting the study of maths and physics in the current generation of Cav Road students, and has made the monetary contributions to all three of these awards. He has also made some funds available to support Cav Rd students to attend physics and engineering work experience or conferences (such as the Conoco Philips Engineering Experience). Please see Mr Denner if you have found something you would like to attend and need some financial assistance towards. The "Warren King Award for Physics" in year 10, 11 and 12 were named after him, and awarded to the highest achieving students in each of those classes.
Graham Jones taught mathematics and physics at Cavendish Road for five years. They were very special years in his life that set the platform for his future roles as Professor of Mathematics Education at universities in Australia and the United States and being the first Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Griffith University, Gold Coast. He received an AM in 2014. Mr Jones was a teacher of Warren King, and the "Graham Jones Award for Year 12 Mathematics" was named in honour of Mr Jones and went to the highest achieving year 12 Maths C student. We were honoured to have Mr Jones in attendance with us on the evening.
Marjorie Godfrey taught mathematics at Cav Rd for many years, inspiring multiple generations of Cav Road students to have respect for mathematics, and for some she instilled a genuine passion for the subject. She celebrated her 100th birthday this year and is still actively playing bridge! She also taught Mr King, and the "Marjorie Godfrey Award for Year 11 Mathematics" for the highest achieving Maths C student has been named in her honour.

CavQuest 2016
The annual CavQuest competition showcasing the many talents of students from Years 7 to 12 was held on Tuesday 11th October at 6.30pm. Students with a variety of talents demonstrating singing, dancing, band performances and even a yo-yo demonstration entertained audience members of friends, family and community members in the school hall. A difficult decision for our judges, Mr D Wood, Mrs J Preston and past student Brianna Mahoney who awarded Shuichi Natsuda, Sara Fredrick and Aleah Mansfield distinctions and Iman Hashim, Ethan Kayes, Erik Dixon, Isabella Kieu and Rodney Chaseling all were awarded with first prize.

Cavendish Road Academy Success – First Place and off to State Finals
Our inspiring team: Lucia Bulmer, Hugo Scott and Liz Harris.
It's that time of year again (no I am not referring to Christmas, that's ages away)! Rather, what has made us so excited is the outstanding result of first place that our amazing triad: Hugo Scott, Lucia Bulmer, and Liz Harris, received at the prestigious university event, The Quest. The Quest is a challenge endorsed by Griffith University and BRAINways Education which invites gifted and talented students from varying age groups to compete in a battle of the minds. Students attend an intensive training day where their Year 8 selves are put to work, learning content which is generally pitched at a Year 12 and first year university level in the sciences, maths and humanities. This year's theme was 'journey to the centre of the earth' and required our students to have a sound understanding of key themes and theory within thermodynamics, mythology and complex geometry, just to name a few. Amazingly, they scored in the 90th percentile for all three fields for the region and they will now move onto State Finals, in November at UQ. To say that this event is a challenge is a true definition of an understatement. It really is a quest for knowledge for these young learners and the fact that our team hit it out of the park speaks volumes to their determination, intelligence and sheer ability to overcome what most would believe to be beyond a high school student. Not us, though! We know these students and their abilities and we are incredibly proud!

Escape Room Challenge
Our Murder mystery team of detectives and delinquents: Naomi, Lily, Mitchell and Tareef.
In a Queensland first, this year we introduced the Academy of Ideas Year 9 program, a course designed to enhance creativity and innovation, and to build skills which will enable and prepare our students for the futures ahead of them. Term 3 was spent engaging them with puzzles and quizzes, introducing them to a new framework for problem solving which includes aspects of the Future Problem Solvers Program and with our students engaging in the University of Queensland's Critical Thinking and Philosophy MOOC (massive open online course). This term is dedicated to skill development. So far, we have targeted a range of key skills we believe are essential to develop in our students and we are taking the class on trails throughout the city in order for them to harness, test and implement those skills. For example last Friday our AOI students set out on an adventure to Puzzled Room Escape where their team work skills were put to the test. This trail required them to complete their Escape Room Challenge in under an hour, working together to solve the puzzles, gather the clues and open passages to secret rooms. The rooms are designed to stimulate creativity and of course team work, with all challenges requiring the groups to divide and conquer to beat the clock and emerge victorious. The owners and staff at Puzzled Room Escape were very impressed with the success of our students, frequently letting out comments of shock, "I can't believe they solved that puzzle without a hint!" or "What! They are onto the next room already!" I think this trail will definitely be a highlight of the term but we have more excitement up our sleeves yet. Stay tuned.

iSTEM UPDATE
We have been incredibly impressed by the Year 8 iSTEM students who, after a term of planning, designing, adapting and creating have finally pitched their ideas to the panel. Some of the ideas put forward include apps that start and restart power to your home, a new canteen initiative, soundflowers that transform noise into electricity, rescue snakes, water saving technology. Many groups have collaborated with real world experts either in the class or online, which has allowed many of the students to hone their ideas.
We will be announcing the shortlisted finalists later this week and the winners of the $1000 prize will be celebrated at The Festival of Ideas on the 5th of December.

Guest Lectures from Griffith University
On Tuesday 4th October, Dr Laura Grogan and PhD student Eloise Stephenson from Griffith University, visited the Year 11 Biology Academy class.
Eloise Stephenson |
Dr Laura Grogan |
They delivered two highly engaging and interesting lectures to the students which contained information about their careers in Ecology and Zoology and their not so straightforward career pathways. The students were provided with examples of jobs that are real world applications of Biology and were also given advice on subject selection, university life and skills that they will need as future scientists. Thanks to Laura and Eloise for giving up their time to visit our class.

Year 11 Physics Excursion: UQ Centre for Advanced Imaging
On the 13th of October our Year 11 Physics students visited the Centre for Advanced Imaging at the St Lucia Campus of the University of Queensland. The CAI facility is home to some of the world's most modern and powerful diagnostic medical imaging machines, including Ultrasound, MRI, PET and CT technology. The facility also houses a cyclotron that is used to manufacture radioisotopes for various industrial and medical applications. The visit was aligned with our Term 4 research task that aims to explore the radioactive isotope Flourine-18. F-18 is commonly used in PET scans because of its short half-life and its property of emitting positrons. It is also one of the isotopes manufactured in the UQ cyclotron.

Antipodeans Abroad
On the 27th of November, 21 students and 3 teachers will embark on an expedition to Vietnam and Cambodia. This adventure will see us exploring the Angkor temples of Siem Reap, trekking in the rainforests of Da Lat and exploring some of the major cities of the area, including Phnom Penh and Ho Chi Minh City. The whole time we will be in charge of organising our own meals, transport, accommodation and sightseeing itinerary. Most importantly we will be participating in a community project, where we will have the opportunity to make a huge difference in the lives of the people in Isanborei Village, a remote community in Cambodia. Many people in the village rely on tourism; especially in the form of homestay to make a living. Despite this, the conditions of some of their homes are very poor, as many of the villagers suffer from poverty. The aim of our community project, which will take place in the village, is to build a medium-sized house so the villagers have a hygienic, clean environment for tourists to home-stay in. Our efforts will hopefully assist in alleviating some of the financial hardship on the entire community. We will also stay with families from the local community; play games with the children, and teach them English.
The cost of a medium-sized house is $2910 AUD, a goal we are very close to. Any donations, however small, towards our goal would be very much appreciated. Donations of small goods such as toys and sports equipment that we could give to the villagers would also be greatly appreciated, as it will do a world of good for a community less fortunate than ourselves. Please contact Mr Batchler via pbatc4@eq.edu.au or 3394 0754 if you are able to donate.

Year 11 Geography Field Trip
On the 12th of October, the Year 11 Geography class undertook a field trip to Cubberla Creek Catchment. We were there to collect data in the form of field samples and photos. We visited four different locations around Kenmore. At each stop, we took note of insects and exotic species. The PH levels of the water and the turbidity was also tested. The importance of this trip was to gather data that we could then use in a Field Report and also see the concepts we have talked about in class working in the natural environment. (Tamara)
Students' comments…
"The field trip helped put into context our knowledge of what biodiversity is and what relationships takes place in local catchment areas."
"I enjoyed getting out into the environment and taking pictures of native and exotic species."
"This field trip was wonderful, it helped us learn interesting facts about the Cubbela Creek Catchment area, and I even found introduced species I had never seen before….we even saw a feral cat running around!"
"I liked getting out in the natural environment and seeing the geography concepts we have learnt about in real life."
"We got to take samples of water and to check for turbidity and PH levels that was cool."

Guten Tag!
On October 13th, over 30 German students Years 9-12 participated in our annual trip to the Oktoberfest for Teens. Overall, 2100 teachers and students from across Queensland (and one school from NSW!) journeyed to the RNA Showgrounds to enjoy the cultural sounds, smells, sights and flavours of Bavaria. It was a wonderful day and though our students didn't rank in the Pretzel eating or lemonade sculling competitions (we put this down to their beautiful manners), they did score second place in the Gummibärchen relay.
It was also a joy to see many of our German students receiving academic acknowledgement during this year's Awards Night. This confirms the high calibre of students coming through and benefiting from our language program. We are proud of our diligent and passionate German learners.

Drama News
What a tremendous term we have had in the Drama Department. Congratulations to all the Drama students for their hard work and dedication in preparing for assessment, and for attending enrichment excursions and in-school workshops. These opportunities to extend knowledge and work with industry professionals will assist your student in preparation as best they can for all assessment tasks. Year 10 students are currently preparing to work on a collaborative project with Holland Park State School Year 5 students. We will travel each Monday for the next 5 weeks to devise an end of year concert for approximately 105 Year 5 students. We will keep you posted with lots of new photos. Year 12 students are working towards their final assessment performance task titled OPEN WORKS. The students are responsible for devising the idea, writing the scripts, creating the set, props, lighting, multimedia, voiceovers and then for directing each scene. This is an outstanding opportunity for the students to work independently and as an ensemble, to present a production they have devised and own! I look forward to seeing you all in the audience on November 1st.
Matilda, the Musical at QPAC Lyric Theatre
Matilda the Musical is a multi-award winning musical from the Royal Shakespeare Company, inspired by the genius of Roald Dahl. With book by Dennis Kelly and original songs by Tim Minchin, Matilda the Musical is the story of an extraordinary girl who, armed with a vivid imagination and a sharp mind, dares to take a stand and change her own destiny. Winner of over 70 major international awards, including 15 for Best Musical, Matilda continues to delight audiences. Cavendish Road is going to see Matilda in November! Several students and staff have used this opportunity to purchase tickets and it is going to be awesome!
Shake and Stir Workshop Ensemble/Performance skills
Year 12 Drama students participated in a workshop with Shake and Stir Theatre Company to develop ensemble and performance skills for their major performance task in week 5 of this term. This was an outstanding opportunity to discuss with Industry professionals the skills required to devise, write, rehearse and perform contemporary drama.
Shake and Stir Performance Tequila Mockingbird at QPAC Cremorne
Twenty senior students attended this engaging production early this month and were totally blown away by the fast paced visually dynamic contemporary production. The best part of taking students to the theatre is hearing them talk about the play with each other at the end. This is when I truly believe our Arts community is in safe hands with such enthusiastic, impassioned young artists.
Open Works – Senior Drama Student Devised Production
Year 12 drama students are currently preparing for their major Drama performance on Tuesday November 1st. This assessment task requires students to work independently to create a 'STUDENT DEVISED DRAMA'. Students have written scripts, begun directing and are completing the props, staging and lighting in preparation for their ACTING DEBUTE! Please see the program below for dates and times.

Japanese Exchange Students
Following are reports from the two Japanese students regarding their time at Cavendish Road State High School.
Takamasa Katsuda
"I attended this school from July 21 through to October 21. I thought at first that it is too different between Cav Road and my school of Japan. Cav Road is a bigger place, and these buildings are lower. Besides there are a lot of students, about two to three times more than my school. I have six classes of 50 minutes per one day in Japan. So I couldn't be used to when I came here.
I was so nervous at the first class. But my teachers and friends talked to me a lot. I liked playing basketball with my friends at Cav Road. I was so excited and it was lots of fun. I love this school so much because they are very kind and energetic. Also, Australia has more freedom than Japan. I have had many new experiences. I had a great time. I want to come to Australia again! If you come to Japan, I will show you how great Japan is. Thank you for a good time. I'm looking forward to seeing you."
Risa Yoshioka
"I had a good time in Australia. It feels like it's been a while, but it could have been a short while. I have made many friends. They are very kind to me and they give me lovely experiences. I love them. When I came to Australia, I felt anxious, but thanks to them I could enjoy school life. Also, it was difficult for me to understand classes, but some friends helped me. I usually talk a lot in Japan, but talking in English is difficult. And we don't have common topics. So at first, I was not brave enough to start a conversation with my friends, but they talked to me. I was glad.
There are differences between Japanese and Australian school, which is really interesting for me. I think Australian school is much more enjoyable than Japanese school. It's tough to attend class in Japan and it's boring. I think we learn whilst having fun in Australia. I want to study while having fun and there is lots of nature. I liked to eat lunch outside because we are usually eating lunch in the classroom in Japan. I enjoyed eating lunch with my friends."
Japanese Study Tour
Term 4 is a busy time for the Japanese staff at Cavendish Road State High School. The Japan Study tour will depart at the end of November. We are also hosting Japanese picnics with our Year 7 and 8 students to consolidate learning from their recent Japanese food unit. A farewell party for our long term Omiya Koryo exchange students also took place in Week 3.

Guidance Officer News
Our students are able to access a range of high quality activities that allow them to understand more about study or work pathways. At Cav we encourage students to participate in university events, work experience programs and exhibitions such as the Allied Health Forum.
Recently Mia McChlery travelled to Western Australia to participate in a girls' flight camp provided by the Australian Defence Force.
"From the 3 - 6 October I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity of a life time. Through the Defence Force work experience program, I was one of thirteen girls, ages ranging from 16 to 24 from across Australia to be chosen to attend the annual 'Flight Camp for Girls', which was held at the RAAF Base, Pearce in WA. The camp was filled with breathtaking experiences, once in a life time opportunities and gave an amazing insight into the life of so many job careers within the Air Force. I met an amazing bunch of girls, all with the similar mindsets and Job career prospects, who I may never have met otherwise. Over the four days we learnt and absorbed everything we could, mesmerized by all we were seeing and hearing. Whether it was the C27 Spartan flying up the west coast, visiting the canine facilities, shooting weapons or flying acrobatics in a PC9, all of us left the camp with amazing memories, new friends and an even greater passion to join the Air Force Family.
This fantastic opportunity also gave me firsthand experience within the Air Force to learn from as I continue forward with my recruiting process with the Defence Force. Having no previous flying or military experience/ background I knew nothing more than the wings and tail of an aircraft going into this camp. However I now have my own personal experiences, stories from current serving personnel, memories and a variety of contacts within the Defence Force that I can use in my upcoming interviews and assessment days to demonstrate that I am passionate, dedicated and the perfect person for them to recruited into their organisation.
Moving forward I will now have this incredible experience with me wherever I go and whatever I decide to do."

WorldSkills
The WorldSkills Competition is our flagship event, held every two years and is the biggest vocational education and skills excellence event in the world that truly reflects global industry. The Competitors represent the best of their peers and are selected from skill competitions in WorldSkills Member countries and regions. They are all under the age of 23 years (except for four skills that have the age limit of 25). They demonstrate technical abilities both individually and collectively to execute specific tasks for which they study and/or perform in their workplace.

This year, Mackenzie Marie currently in Year 12, represented TAFE QLD South Bank in the National competition. The contestants were asked to compete in a series of office simulated tasks. On this occasion Mackenzie represented our region extremely well, coming 5th overall. Well done Mackenzie, we're all very proud of your efforts. You have managed to balance school work with TAFE commitments to the highest level.
HVIA – Heavy Vehicle Industry Australia (Schools to Industry Tour) 12 September 2016
Choosing a career path can seem daunting to some young people. Often they just need more information about career opportunities. HVIA Schools to Industry Tour is an initiative designed to provide students Years 10-12 with a means to explore all the potential career options within the Heavy Vehicle Industry and to enable them to make informed decisions about their future careers.
Last term I took a group of young boys on an Industry Tour to Brisbane Isuzu and MaxiTrans Industries. The day was such an interesting experience as we were escorted around the maintenance garage and the teaching facilities of Isuzu. While at MaxiTrans we walked the floor of the welding areas learning how each section works together to create a large production line.
The boys enjoyed this experience and it gave them an opportunity to see how part of the heavy vehicle industry works. Here are two students' comments:-
"The best part about today was seeing all the ISUZU parts and accessories used for trucks. This would be a good pathway because you don't have to be a mechanic for your whole life. You can look into being a safety manager, part of the sales team or be part of the team designing trucks and parts." – Michael Eaton
"The best part about HVIA was the demonstrations on the trucks' engines and all the possibilities that it could lead to. I also enjoyed the free sausage sizzle that ISUZU gave us. The Lusty's tour was good because it gave us an insight on what it would be like to working on trailers and welding sheets of metal. This career pathway could provide many opportunities, as it could lead to working in the air force or in the mines." – Cameron Boynton

National Youth Championships
Term 3 concluded with one of the big National Touch Football Competitions (NYC) being held at Stockland's Park Kawana. Kobe Nona represented Queensland in the girl's team and Jayden Fielding Smith and James Price with the boys. Each team played an average of 3 games a day and went through the competition undefeated. The final for the girls was against NSW Touch Football Development team, the game concluded with a score of 8 to 2. Qld girls dominated the ruck and made it very difficult for NSW to get to their try line through some pressure defence.
Congratulations to Kobe who won Player of the Final. She dazzled the opposition and threw some amazing long balls to score off the back of some excellent rucking. The boys played against Central Qld in the final. Having two Qld teams in a final is a massive feat for Qld and a reflection of the great coaching and development we have in this state. Both boys played out of their socks and came away with a healthy win over CQ with a score of 8 to 2. Mr Loth and I were very proud to be a part of the coaching team and thrilled to see our Cav Rd students excel in the game. Congratulations Kobe, Jayden and James.
National All Schools
Running alongside the NYC comp for the first time was the National All Schools Competition. Cavendish Road had qualified for this event by finishing in the top four of the 2015 Qld All Schools Touch Competition. Unfortunately the Girls were unable to record a win but it was very impressive to see them improve over the 3 days of competition. Congratulations to Georgia Manns who received the Players Player award which is voted by her peers from within the team. The Boys opened their campaign with a hard fought 6-5 victory over Wellington Point SHS and then continued to record some impressive wins enroute to the Grand Final, including a 12-9 victory over the NSW All Schools Champions St Edward's College. We met Narara Valley High School in the Final and knew it would be a tough encounter after they defeated us in our final round game. The boys were extremely focussed and disciplined throughout the match and ran away with the game with a 6-4 victory to be crowned the inaugural National Champions. Well done to all the players and coaches involved. We look forward to defending our title in 2017!
Queensland All Schools
Our favourite carnival of the year Queensland All Schools was held in the first week of term 4. Six Cavendish Rd teams battled it out against teams from around the country, New Zealand, Singapore and Japan. After five fantastic days of Touch Football, the weather turned one on for us and the touch was just as hot. Thanks to all the players, parents, managers and coaches, especially Mr Loth, Mr Caruso, Mr Kosanovic for making this event a great one. Special mention to Jordan Seeto, Jordy has been helping out coaching our boys' teams for the love of the game from the start of the year. We appreciate everything you have done for the students.
Congratulations to Boys 15 Years team who won their divisions. They played against Ignatius Park in the final with a score of 6 tries to 3. Player of the final was Kapu Broughton-Winterburn. Congratulations Kapu. Special mention to The Open boys who were narrowly defeated in the Semi-final and the Open Girls who were knocked out in the quarters. The 15 Year girls, 13 Years girls and boys all played well to improve their knowledge and skills during a very tough competition.

Sport Report
Student Success - Track & Field
Year 11 student Neil Janse Van Rensburg competed in the Queensland Schools Athletics Championships earlier this month for Javelin, Discus and Shot Put. He competed exceptionally in all events, earning 2nd place in Discus (48.80 m) and taking the Gold Medal in Javelin (67.70m). We congratulate Neil on his Queensland selection. Well done.
Student Success – Swimming
Lauren Robinson (Year 9) competed at the Queensland Short Course State Swimming Championships at the beginning of September and won gold in her age group for the 100m breaststroke. She also won bronze in both the 50m & 200m breaststroke.
As a result of her performances, she was selected to represent Queensland for the Swimming Australia State Teams Competition held during the September holidays. This competition was held at the AIS in Canberra and only the best Age Group swimmers in the country get selected. The State Teams competition is one of the pinnacle events in swimming for Age group swimmers in Australia and it is extremely difficult to get selected on a Queensland team. Lauren's contributions at this meet helped Queensland again claim the title of champion team in Australia. Congratulations on your achievements Lauren!
Year 10 PSC Recreational Sport
There are only four weeks remaining in Year 10 Recreational Sport, with many teams looking in good shape as the business end of the competition approaches. With the warmer weather arriving it is essential students wear their full sports uniform, including a hat, as they are physically and socially active during this time. This competition will continue weekly until Week 8, Term 4.

Finance News
The end of 2016 is fast approaching and planning for 2017 is well and truly in progress. As part of this planning process for 2017, you should have received by email a copy of the forms listed below for return in person to the Finance Window or by email to finance@cavroadshs.eq.edu.au. All parents with a listed email address have been sent these forms.
- Student Resource Scheme Participation Agreement form 2017
- Student Resource Scheme & Subject Fees Schedule of Charges 2017
- Student 1 to 1 Laptop Program 2017
- Student Participation Agreement form for the Laptop 1 to 1 Program.
There is a choice for payment of the Student Resource and Laptop Scheme of
- making payment in full, or
- paying in instalments over terms 1, 2 and 3, or
- negotiating an instalment payment plan with the school.
When you make full payment of $750.00 for the SRS Flat Fee with take home laptop by Wednesday 30th November, 2016 you will receive a $30.00 credit applied to your student's account. This will occur early in 2017 for use in that year.
If you have not received your forms by email, please contact the school at finance@cavroadshs.eq.edu.au.
Frequently Asked Questions Student Resource Scheme Flat Fee
The Student Resource Scheme Flat Fee is an annual fee, which includes textbooks, school supplied resources and a supplied laptop from the 1-1 program. Please note that the Flat Fee amount is the balance payable after the total resource fee has been offset by the Government Textbook and Resource Allowance. The Flat Fee amount is approvesd by the P & C Association each year. There may be additional subject fees for high resource cost subjects or Academies, and these are listed on the Schedule of Charges Form. If a student changes or leaves a subject, there may be some charges that are non-refundable. Camps and excursions that your student may participate in are not included in the flat fee, and you will be invoiced separately for these.
Laptop 1 to 1 Program
Cavendish Road State High School is currently not 'a bring your own device' (BYOD) approved school. CRSHS has a secure network and bring your own devices are unable to connect at this time. All laptops are supplied with approved software for each year level. If there are further concerns you are welcome to contact our Head of Department for IT, Karen McFarlane on kmcfa19@eq.edu.au or 07 3394 0718.
Clearance Forms
The clearance form at the end of each year identifies and informs the students of the need to return resources, e.g. Text Books and Library books, that their laptop is in good working order and condition and they still have their case and charger. If textbooks and library books have not been returned by the end of the 2016 school year, an invoice will be raised to cover replacement cost. There is also a clearance for the student financial account. If there are outstanding invoices relating to 2016 or earlier, this portion of the clearance form will not be signed. If there any outstanding fees on the student account, the student will be given a statement to take home to finalise these before the end of the 2016 school year. Parents on approved payment plans are exempted.
Credit for Early Payment
The credit for early payment is only available for payment in full ($750) of the 2017 Student Resource Scheme Flat Fee. This offer is not available for any other years or outstanding/overdue student accounts. Credit will applied for each student for whom payment has been made in full, however, the credits can be used to offset any future invoice for any student in the same family.
Payment Direct to School
Education Queensland's preferred method of payment is BPoint.
Payments can be made directly to the school via direct deposit into our school bank account.
- Account Name: Cavendish Road State High School
- BSB: 064-112
- Account Number: 00090109
- Use the student's EQ ID No (found on timetable or ID card) and what the payment is for as the reference. E.g. 123456789Q SRS, E.g. 123456789Q Ski Trip
- If the student number is not included in the payment reference, and the student cannot be identified, then the CBA may charge a $25.00 search fee.
Student Account for 2016 or Previous Years
We would like to thank all those parents who have paid in full their students accounts for 2016 or negotiated an installment payment plan. If your student account has outstanding student fees for 2016 or earlier, please be aware that this may result in your student being ineligible to participate in extracurricular activities. Students may also be excluded from the Student Resource Scheme for 2017 if fees are outstanding from previous years and an approved payment installment plan has not been negotiated. Parents/Caregivers would be responsible for the provision of all textbooks and reference materials for their student/s.
We do understand that sometimes payments can be difficult for some families, and we offer individual payment plans. We also offer fortnightly deductions from your Centrelink payment via our arrangement with Centrepay. If you wish to access any of these options, please contact Finance on 3394 0777.
Invoices for 2017
Invoices for the Student Resource Scheme/Laptop 1-1 Program have been generated and were emailed to parents/caregivers over the weekend of the 22nd October. If you choose not to participate in our Student Resource Scheme for 2017, please indicate by ticking the "No" box at the top of the form. Your invoice will be removed and an invoice will be re-issued for all school produced resources. A list of textbooks and resources to be provided by parents/caregivers will also be available. 2017 Material Resource booklets will shortly be available for viewing on the Cavendish Road website.
If you haven't received your student invoice, you can view your invoices, payments, receipts, or credit notes at QParents.
Communication Delays from the Finance Department
We would like to thank parents and caregivers for their enthusiastic response to the communications that have been emailed/sent out recently. We are responding as quickly as possible to enquiries, but there are a large number of these at this time of year. We ask for patience during this time.

Year 8 Challenge
Last term ended with the Year 8 Challenge Week which was a lot of fun. It was also a very good way to spend time with students that I don't normally get a chance to get to know. I loved working with the teachers also.
Spin Off Gym Bike Challenge
Our team was called the "Cavendish Road Generals" in the Spin-off Chaplaincy Fundraiser event that occurred on Saturday the 22nd October. Even though we were a small team of just 3 students and myself, we won the junior high school section of the Spin-off Gym bike Challenge 2016. The prize was an extra $500 for our school chaplaincy service. Kiralee Worthington, Grace Bond-Tweedie and Charlie Fewtrell raised more than $600 dollars for our school chaplaincy service. Furthermore, Charlie won the highest individual fundraiser award for a high school student. These three students gave their all during the competition, pushing themselves to their limit. I am very proud of them. Congratulations to the Cavendish Road Generals! It was a wonderful event.
Another small project in focus is the 'Chappy's Writing Competition', and the winner will receive a $25 gift card. To help a student achieve his Certificate 3 in fitness and personal training, I have volunteered to be his client. We have two sessions a week and I must say, he is doing a great job at making me stronger.

Free advice and support for Queensland parents
Not every parent may need support, but it is ok to ask for help. Since the Triple P Parenting program started last year, more than 20,000 Queensland families have received free parenting advice and a helping hand. The Triple P Parenting program provides tips on managing kids' behaviour, balancing work and family and the best ways of raising happy, confident children.
Research shows that children raised in a calm, consistent and positive home environment are more likely to succeed at school, have better jobs, experience more positive relationships and enjoy better mental and physical health. Parents who do Triple P are also more likely to have lower levels of depression, anxiety and stress, so there are plenty of good reasons for parents to learn more about the benefits of positively parenting their children.
The range of support includes an online program, topic-specific seminars, parent discussion groups and one-on-one consultations as well as more intensive, small group-based and individual programs.
For more information about the Triple P programs or to find a session near you, visit the Triple P website . Immediate Triple P help is available by phoning Parent line on 1300 30 1300 (from 8 am to 10 pm) for the cost of a local call.
