Our ASOT Focus for This Week
Why is it important for students to apply their analysis skills in other contexts, at school and beyond?
Bill Turner Cup Success
Congratulations Mr Zimmerlie, Mr Turp, Ms Amos and Ms Andreatta for their great success in the Bill Turner Cup State Football Titles. Our girls are off to Newcastle to contest the National Title in the coming weeks after defeating St Margaret Mary’s Townsville 2-0 in the State Final.
Peter Doherty Excellence in Teaching of Science
Mr Steve Griffiths was awarded a Peter Doherty Excellence in Teaching Science Award on Friday evening. Mr Griffiths is a leader in Australia in the Flipped Learning pedagogical approach. This approach heightens students’ engagement and excitement for Science. Congratulations Mr Griffiths.
NAPLAN Success
Congratulations to all! Please see the attached document for our preliminary NAPLAN results. For the first time ever in the history of NAPLAN at Cav Rd we are a sea of green for NMS achievement, Mean Scale Score achievement and number of students in the Upper Two Bands! Our best overall NAPLAN results so far! Well done Team Cav!
Kashti Parmar Year 8
Kashti recently participated in the 'You're the Voice’ concert at South Bank Piazza, which aims to unite voices to sing out against domestic violence. This is part of the Queensland Music Festival. On 24 June, Kashti also had the honour to open the huge Australian flag and perform with 30 girls in the Qantas Choir at the Qantas ‘Wallabies versus Italy’ rugby match held at the Suncorp Stadium. There was an article in the Sunday Mail about this event. We certainly have many talented students, congratulations Kashti!
Please feel free to phone me at the school if I can support your family in any way.

Junten Senior High School Study Tour
From the 23 July to 5 August, twenty-two students from Junten Senior High School came from Tokyo, Japan to Cavendish Road State High School to gain a cultural insight and understanding of our school’s education of Science and Mathematics. The Year 9 Science Academy class were given the fabulous opportunity to buddy with the students and learn about their culture and a little bit of Japanese as well. Throughout their visit, the students learned about Science and Maths in our own classrooms and enjoyed their experience in the class. Besides being inside the class, the Junten and Year 9 Science Academy students participated in a variety of activities, which included a day excursion to Hastings Point to learn about the environment, and the adaptations that plants and animals make to survive. From there, both Junten and Cav Rd students were partnered together in groups to generate a 1 to 3 minute video about a specific organism from Hastings Point and present it to their peers.
The Junten students also got to experience Australian culture firsthand by participating in Indigenous games with the Year 9 Science Academy like Buroinjin and Thepan which was a great amount of fun. As well, the Junten students participated in a full-day excursion to Dreamworld and a three-day excursion to Griffith University’s Chemistry Department. The Junten students couldn’t get enough of what Australia had to offer and the Year 9 Science Academy didn’t want to let them go. The visit from Junten was a fantastic opportunity and we were grateful to be a part of it. We are looking forward to the next lot of students to arrive.

Last month saw twenty-six Cavendish Road students attend the Griffith University Exercise Science and Health Conference Day. Throughout the day students presented their research to over 200 students and lecturers. Our students presented their work on screen time and the link to obesity as well as physiology and intensity tracking using GPS technology. Students also had the opportunity to hear from senior lectures from the Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy courses on what those career pathways entail. Our students will complete the course at the end of this term and receive guaranteed entry into a range of Health courses at Griffith. All the best to these students for their final exam.

Recently, the subject selection evenings were held at Cavendish Road and it was very pleasing to see the level of interest by students across all year levels in continuing with either German or Japanese in 2018. There were several questions raised on the evening by students and parents. These questions included whether or not a student could choose German or Japanese in Year 11 and 12 without having done it in Years 9 and 10, whether or not students could take a semester off in Years 9 and 10, what the university bonus ranking system is, and whether or not there were trips on offer.
In answer to these questions, the Language Department strongly advises the following: If a student would like to select a language for Year 11 and 12 it is strongly recommended that they have studied it in Years 9 and 10. The reason being that students have been exposed to a wide range of vocabulary, sentence patterns and grammar in these years. It is often difficult for a new student to cope without the scaffolding of Years 9 and 10. If a student has a family background or a genuinely strong desire and is prepared to put in the extra work to catch up, then it may be possible. A Guidance Officer would be able to help with further information. For the same reason of sequential learning, the language department strongly advises students to undertake German or Japanese for both semesters in Year 9 and 10.
The University bonus entry ranking scheme applies to all students who graduate from a language in Year 12 with at least a C level of achievement. It means an extra credit when students apply for tertiary entry. There are regular scholarships on offer to Germany and Japan. The language department receives regular email updates of these. They vary in length from 2 weeks to full year scholarships and different scholarships will offer full or partial costs covered. Students from Year 10 and onwards are eligible to apply. Students could see their Language teacher for more information. The school does run trips every two years to Japan and we are hopeful of organising one to Germany in the near future.
This week we welcome 25 students and 2 teachers from our Japanese sister school Omiya Koryo Senior High School. We thank those families who have volunteered to support this relationship by hosting students for the week. We look forward to sharing student experiences of the visit in the next newsletter. German students in Years 9, 10, 11 and 12, please keep an eye out for an expression of interest form regarding attending this year’s Oktoberfest for teens.

Overall the students had an awesome day. They were, as always, fantastic and made it very relaxing (for teachers anyway) and enjoyable. Our results were great too! The Intermediate teams were strong with both a Silver medal and Bronze medal. The junior team just missed out on first place (by 4 points out of a possible 330) and also brought home a silver medal. The remaining teams came in at 5th, 8th and 8th. With around 16 teams in each division these were great results and we were really pleased with their efforts on the day.
The best part of the day was the buzz in the room with so many students immersed in working together to solve some very challenging problems.
Year 7 and 8 Quiz
On the evening of the 25th of July we had two teams compete in the Annual QAMT 7/8 Mathematics Quiz held at Yeronga SHS. We were carry over champions and two of our winning team members from last year were competing for the second time. We were only able to take a maximum of two teams but had 5 times that number keen to compete which says a lot for the commitment of students at Cavendish Road State High School. The students who won a place to represent Cav road consisted of Millie Noden, Tegwen Boyle and Rahul Nair (Millie and Tegwen were part of our winning team from last year) and Tom Fasham, Carol He Lian and Thomas Utberg. It was their first time in the competition and I am pleased to say a very successful one.
Tom, Carol and Thomas finished in first place with a total of 24.5 points leaving Mansfield and Yeronga tying in a distant second on 19.5 points. Mille, Tegwen and Rahul finished seventh out of sixteen teams. Our winning team will now compete against other District teams in the State finals in October this year. My thanks go to Mr Gaffney and his team of helpers in the organisation, training and selection of the teams.

Drama News
Welcome to term 3 and an important semester for all our students. Year 12 students have begun working on OPEN WORKS which is their student devised performance piece. Year 11 are studying Greek Drama with an intensive workshop with Zen Zen Zo Physical Theatre Company. Our junior students recently viewed “The Apology” by Zeal Theatre Company and this was an outstanding production on bullying and the long term effects it can have on an individual’s life.
We have had a busy immersion into term 3 with live productions and workshops plus assessment just around the corner. So Drama students look after yourselves, eat properly and get some sleep. You will need to be alert and functioning for all that is happening in and out of the classroom.
The Apology by Zeal Theatre Company
This was an outstanding production based on the effects long term bullying can have on young students. All drama students from Year 8-12 were immersed into a tragic story of one young boy and the constant, ever present effects bullying can have on an individual. The story begins in Year 9 and continues past Year 12. This production was delivered by two actors taking on multiple roles to bring an audience of almost 200 students on a journey that shows just how devastating bullying is and how it stays with you long into your future. I strongly recommend this production.
Year 11 Zen Zen Zo Workshop
Year 11 students are studying Greek Drama reading MEDEA by Euripides. This is a wonderful play about revenge, love and tragedy. Students participated in a workshop run by Zen Zen Zo, an international physical theatre company sharing their expertise on movement and interpretation of text. Students developed sections of text into movement and chant, using choral chant and gesture. This was an outstanding workshop and will assist all students in their assessment preparations.
Blackrock performance at La Boite Theatre
La Boite theatre and QUT Creative industries students have successfully performed Blackrock by Nick Enright a play based on the true story of Leigh Leigh who was murdered on a Newcastle beach. This was an outstanding production with all Year 11 and 12 drama students using this as an assessment task.
Noises Off at QPAC
Year 11 students last term saw an amazing comedy production that was truly an experience they have not seen before. This high paced, enthusiastic, chaotic production was wonderfully executed and a real joy to watch. My dad informed me he saw this production 20 years ago, I can honestly say it is still a much loved drama.
Dracula at QPAC
Students from Year 10, 11 and 12 will attend this return season of Dracula by Shake and Stir Theatre Company. This is truly an incredible production and a must see. Most Year 12 students saw the original production two years ago, now our new Year 10 Drama students with the Year 11 students will see this truly gothic production brought to life with colour, rotating stage and plenty of tension.
Open Works by Year 12
Senior drama students are preparing for their major performance task next term. They are currently writing scripts which will eventually be staged in the hall for parents, family, peers, friends, staff and the CAV community. Watch this space for updates on this wonderful student devised production titled RUMOURS.
La Boite Theatre Women’s Workshop
Last week two senior leaders accompanied me to a workshop held at La Boite theatre for your young female, or gender non-conforming, student leaders called 'SHE WAS ASKING FOR IT.' The evening consisted of a panel conversation and workshops for young people in response to La Boite’s latest production, Nick Enright's Blackrock, followed by a viewing of the work.
The workshop hosted by La Boite Youth and Participation Producer, Claire Christian, and Creative Producer, Sanja Simic, as well as impressive local female leaders who guided our students through conversations and a workshop centred around the key themes in BLACKROCK: toxic masculinity, violence against women and the silencing of female voices. This was an incredible event and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Year 12 Ensemble Workshop – Shake and Stir Theatre Company
Year 12 students this term are preparing for their major assessment item titled OPEN WORKS and consequently attended an in school workshop on ENSEMBLE SKILLS with the fabulously talented Shake and Stir Theatre company’s Johnny Balbuziente. Johnny spent 90 minutes with the students discussing devising concepts, writing scripts, structuring plays content and some workshop activities.
We thoroughly enjoy having Shake and Stir Theatre Company come to our school and again this was a valuable workshop in preparing students for the best results during assessment. I can’t wait to see the students’ final production for Year 12. So watch this space.

Thank you to our Junten Study Tour Homestay Families
From 23 July to 5 August 2017, twenty-two Year 11 students from Tokyo were welcomed into the homes of twelve families associated with the school. The families did a wonderful job of hosting the students, creating wonderful memories for the Junten Senior High School students to take back with them. The following message was sent to Kylie Cotterell (mother of Emily Horsfall in Year 8) from Rie Naito’s mother in Japan:
“Now that Rie returns to Japan I want to say thank you so much for your kind hosting of her at your home in Australia. It was wonderful for her to stay with your family. You mean a lot to the current and future of her. Please do let us know if you or any of your family are in Tokyo, so that I can welcome you”.
Kylie has a large family including two sets of twins (see photo below left) and on the last day Rie was in tears when she was dropped at the bus, which was evidence of how much she did not want to leave her Australian family. Rie was not alone in the shedding of tears, as some of the other visiting students were doing the same. They all told me they had a fantastic time with their homestay families.
I would like to say a big thank you to the Cotterells, and to all the other homestay families (the Arnfield, Davis, Eleison, Finlayson, Grant, Gronow, Jordan, Liesegang, Riggs, Sutorowski and Zumaeta families) for making this Study Tour so memorable for the Junten students. Study Tours really do change lives and you have all played a special part in the lives of these young people.

Bill Turner State Finals Report
On Tuesday 8th and Wednesday 9th August Cavendish Road State High Schools Bill Turner Boys and Girls travelled to Peninsula Power to complete in the State Finals of the Bill Turner Cup and Trophy respectively. On the first day, the boys played Chancellor State College; unfortunately, Chancellor got away to a fast start and scored three goals in the first half. Despite the Cav Rd boys dominating the second half they could only peg one goal back, thanks to Harry Talbot, losing 3-1. On Wednesday the boys then played off for third place against St Augustine’s College and again lost. Despite these two losses the boys should be extremely proud of their efforts, as we are, finishing 4th in the state. Thank you to Mr Zimmerlie and the boys for all their hard work.
The girls played Murrumba Downs State Secondary College in their Semi-Final and came away with a thumping 6-0 win with a hat trick to, Michelle Coleman and single goals to Dominique Spampinato, Ella Swindells and Tayla Dorrington. The Final against St Margaret Marys College, was a much tenser affair with both teams having some good opportunities to open the scoring in the first half but we went into the break at 0-0. The second half exploded with Dominique slicing her way through the defence and finishing past the keeper. She was at it again as she finished off a cut back after some good work by Ella down sideline. Dominique then finished off with a hat trick to complete the scoring with an assist from Estella Mazzoni final score Cav Rd 3 St Margaret Marys 0. Cav Rd Bill Turner Trophy Queensland Champions. Congratulations to Miss Amos and the girls and such a fantastic achievement. Special mention must go to the team’s defensive work in keeping two clean sheets in the finals series, a formidable feat. They will now travel down to Lake Macquarie, NSW to compete in the National Finals on the 5th and 6th of September. Good Luck Girls!
Schools Premier League (SPL) Report
On Monday the 14th August Cavendish Road State School hosted Helensvale State School in the Round 5 clash in the SPL. The day started with resounding wins with the Open Girls winning 16-0 and the Junior Boys winning 6-1. The afternoons were a closer affair with the Open Boys winning 4-0 and the Junior Girls losing 2-0. Well done to all involved and thank you to the students referee volunteers Logan Douglas, Selmir Saldic, Nick Clark, Emily Butler and Michelle Collman.

In Touch
Schools Touch League (STL)
Our final STL for the year was held at Redlands Touch association. All teams played exceptionally well and we are very proud of the personal improvements our students have achieved. All teams made semi- finals but unfortunately due to time restrictions we were unable to go to drop off. As our opposition was placed higher in previous games they progressed through to the Grand-final series. Overall Cav finished 3rd, the highest ranking school in Brisbane. A great effort! A big thanks to the fabulous Chloe Cooksley, Mitch Williams and Joel Davis who attended all of our STL carnivals as referees and did a wonderful job.
15 Years Met East Representatives
Renae Nona, Shajuate Aila, Tyler Beazley, Josephine Lifu-Bray (injured), Bella Allen, Alfred Hape and Jude Saldanha travelled to Rockhampton for the 15 year state championship with the girls and boys teams. One thing that was noted by all coaching staff from the 12 regions is that the quality of touch has improved significantly over the last 5 years. 15 year touch players are achieving levels that we didn’t think were possible. It is a credit to all involved (coaches, teachers, players and parents) that the standard is so high.
The girls Met East team had a relatively easy first day defeating teams by running hard and executing moves and game play efficiently. Day 2 was a very challenging day, the games became more challenging and we had to learn to adapt to the speed and strength of the opposition. Day 3 saw the girls step up. Renae Nona as captain led the girls with maturity beyond her years to guide the girls to success. They were able to turn around the losses of the previous days to make the finals. Renae’s ability to create something out of nothing at the line meant she was often sent out to score tries at the drop of a hat. Renae stepped up every time and did the job perfectly. Tyler Beazley was a little legend in the mid field, slowing down the roll ball with great front on touch to prevent the opposition to keep the opposition from getting to the line to score. Her drive up the field to set up for others to run from half enabled us to attack and score tries. She was amazing. Shajuate Aila’s strengths were her ability to find weakness in the defensive line. She attacked with speed and scored a couple of wonderful tries off the back of some very strategic conditioning of the defence. Shajuate should be very proud of her improvement during this carnival, she stepped up in the important games to help her team in their success. Bella Allen was our working link that ran and ran all day. Her intensity in this gave us the go forward we needed to attack the line and make it difficult for the opposition to get to ours. Her fabulous footwork in finding extra metres that are crucial for effective rucking and drive were spectacular. We must also mention Josephine, who very unluckily did her MCL at the STL comp the week before we left for Rocky. We appreciated and were thrilled to see Josephine turn up to surprise the girls as our number one supporter. Her input during half time talks motivated the girls to play harder and be the best they could. The girls ended up making the semi-final against Capricornia. They were defeated right on the hooter however they should be very proud of their achievements over the week, they gave everything they had.
Alfred and Jude represented the boys and had similar successes. Alfred was consistent and selfless in his game play. He worked hard for others and did a fine job for his team. His improvement during the carnival was outstanding. Jude was that dynamic player who could set up something from nothing. Jude was one of the team’s strike players and did a wonderful job for his team. The Qld selection panel recognised this and Jude was named as one of the 14 players who will represent Qld at the end of the year. We are very proud. Good luck.
Billie Manns also needs recognition for making the 15 years Presidents team. The Presidents team replaces North West who are unable to field a whole team for this competition. Students who make shadows from regional teams become eligible to play. Billie was selected and also travelled to Rocky. We watched Billie play and she did a fabulous job of guiding her team around the paddock. She was their main strike player running with momentum and intensity. For someone so gentle in years she really did a wonderful job. Well done.
Queensland Representative
Congratulations to Jude Saldanha in his selection in the 15 year Boys Qld team. Jude was selected from hundreds of players from 12 regions. Jude will travel to Adelaide in November to compete in The School Sport Australia Pacific School Games. Good luck with your preparations Jude.
12 Years Met East
Luke Schafer, Joshua Tokam and Dynasty Tamihana competed in the 12 years and Under State Championships in Ipswich last weekend. From all reports both Luke and Josh improved in confidence over the 5 days and kept their teams in contention for the final series. Dynasty who was named as a Qld Shadow player, played out of her skin and helped her team make the Grand-final. Her Met East team was narrowly defeated by South Coast in a cracking good final. We are very proud of you Dynasty.
The Drone
We have started using the drone in class. Video footage has been downloaded onto the student drive and we have asked that they watch this footage for homework. It is expected that students will gain a better understanding of their positional plays and through analysing this footage they can see where they have gone wrong and improve their performance. This is a much higher order thinking exercise for all players and we believe that this will better improve their performance, and confidence and therefore their game.

We are very happy with this year’s menu rating from the Queensland Association of School Tuckshops (QAST) for our current menu. We have received a great menu health check giving us a 5 Apple Rating (5/5). Which means, we have a ‘Smart Choices Compliant Menu’, and that we are eligible for Tuckshop of the Year nomination.
Summer is nearly here and we have been working hard creating a new range of items for Term 4, 2017 and Term 1 2018. New items will include a range of choices in our new Salad Bowl Selection. This range will be available for $4.00. We are also rearranging the specials a little, with the introduction of Mexi Tuesdays with Devil Chicken Burger $5.00, Taco Box $5.00, and of course the Beef Burritos, still great value for $5.00. Other new menu items include: Taco Cup, available in the Salad Fridge for $4.00, Butter Chicken will be available as a Monday Special in addition to our old favourites, Chicken Chilli Wraps and Gravy Beef Rolls.
Taco Cup: Chilli Beef, Salsa, Sour Cream, Lettuce, Diced Tomato and Tortilla Chips, all for $4.00

Queensland Road Safety Week
Speaking up for road safety is the focus of Queensland’s Road Safety Week, giving all Queenslanders the opportunity to be directly involved in making our roads safer for everyone. From 21–25 August 2017, this Queensland-wide event will encourage the whole community to join the conversation about road safety. We are encouraging communities, schools and workplaces to consider all road safety issues with each day focusing on different road user behaviours, including the ‘Fatal Five’. Let’s stop accepting speeding, drink driving, fatigue and other distractions and make our roads safer.

New online behaviour tool
The Department of Education and Training’s Autism Hub has launched a new tool called the Guided Functional Behaviour Assessment Tool (GFBAT). An interactive online decision-making tool, it is designed to help teachers ‘think functionally’ about why a student is behaving in a particular way.
Built in collaboration with Griffith University, the tool helps to identify the cause of a problem behaviour and supports the implementation of evidence-based strategies to prevent the behaviour. The tool can be accessed through the Autism Hub and Reading Centre website.
